Linda L. Folks

Linda L. Folks, 78, of Galena, IL, was called home by the Lord Jesus on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, passing peacefully in her home. A funeral mass will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena where friends may call from 9 AM until the time of the mass. The burial will take place in the church cemetery.

Linda was born on March 15, 1947, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Harold and Dorothy (Koster) Ley. She attended Wahlert and Senior High Schools in Dubuque, IA, and later studied cosmetology in the Dubuque area. Linda also completed two years of college in Dubuque, Iowa.

On May 13, 1967, Linda was united in marriage to Gaylon G. Folks at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque. She worked as a teaching assistant with the Galena School District for 30 years, retiring in 2010. Known for her kind and generous heart, Linda often purchased gifts for less fortunate children she encountered and donated to various charitable organizations. During the summer months, when she wasn’t working at the school, Linda loved to travel with Gaylon, Casey, and Jenny to numerous places across the country, including Walt Disney World, Washington, DC, Hershey, Pennsylvania, and the Rocky Mountains. In her childhood, she enjoyed outdoor events and day trips with her parents.

As an adult, Linda spent many years helping her father, Harold, care for her mother, Dorothy, who suffered from multiple sclerosis. She and her late daughter Jenny viewed shopping as an Olympic event and cherished their time browsing through local shops together. Linda was an avid reader, enjoying all sorts of literature, including mysteries, short stories, biographies, and travel books. In her retirement, she continued her travel adventures with family and friends, visiting places such as Hawaii, New York City, and Chicago. Linda will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She always encouraged her children, both at home and at school, to be true to their hearts, to try their best, and to believe in themselves. Linda cherished her special relationship with her granddaughter, Kayleigh. The two spent many hours together reading, coloring, drawing, and simply having fun. Nana played an instrumental role in helping Kayleigh attend swimming lessons, karate lessons, and regularly visit the bookstore. Their bond will never fade.

She is survived by her husband, Gaylon Folks, of Galena; her son, Casey; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Cilino-Folks; granddaughter, Kayleigh Gayle Folks; and her honorary granddaughter, Natalie Ricke.

He then worked for William C. Brown in Dubuque, IA. In the latter half of his life, he owned and operated Cover to Cover bookstore in Galena for ten years. John J. Lyons

Jack was blessed with a long life, a loving wife, a large family and good neighbors. And being satisfied in his faith in God, the future of the family farm with his son Steve and grandsons, and the love of his family and friends, he departed our company on May 13, 2025, at the age of 92.

Friends and family may visit from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Key West. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa.

Jack was born October 27, 1932, the third of eight children to the Irish-Catholic family of James and Marion Lyons.  The family stayed close all their lives and Jack will enjoy joining Anne, Bob, Gerry and Jane who went before him. Jack will be deeply missed by his surviving siblings Ray (Sandy), Joe (Barb) and Linda (Bill) Mullinex.

Jack married Helen (Dunne) in 1952 and over 73 years together built a life, a farm and a family. Jack and Helen enjoyed many triumphs and endured a few tragedies, the worst of which was the loss of their youngest son Jimmy on his 23rd birthday.  Jack was incredibly proud of his other four children who survive him: Steve (Lynn) Lyons, Cheri (Tom) Stockel, Dave (Sandee) Lyons and Jane (Dan) Mueller; his 12 grandchildren Craig, Tom, Travis, Cole, Cali, Riley, Jarod, Kelsey, Maureen, Hannah, Ali and Jack; his 23 great grandchildren, along with his loving wife Helen, who raised their beautiful family together for 73 years.

Jack believed in hard work, fair dealing and frugal living.  He spent four decades working at the Dubuque Pack until its closure. But his real work was on the farm.  He took over the rural Bernard family farm in 1965 and raised his family and his cattle.  There may have been bigger cattlemen than Jack, but none more genuine.  Whether that was as the smallest child leading the largest calf in 1941 at Silver Acres Race Track (now Flora Park), a proud young father watching his children win championship ribbons at the Dubuque County Fair or as an old farmer smiling when he would hear the auctioneer announce “next in the ring for sale are a set of calves from John Lyons and you’ll never see better”.

He would say there was nothing special about him, yet he could call a euchre hand after the first trick, tell you exactly when a calf would drop and make a piece of equipment last forever.  His reputation as a penny-pincher was legend as was his love for baseball.  He was a good player, a good coach and a life-long fan of the Cincinnati Reds. He loved to play poker with his friends and hunt with his grandkids.

The family would like to express its heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Dubuque.  Shout-out to Amanda.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Inspiration Stables  21177 317th St, La Motte, IA 52054 ,  St. Joseph Key West or Hospice of Dubuque.

Family was incredibly important to Ed, and he especially treasured spending time with his nieces and nephews, who were always overjoyed to have him join their celebrations.

He was a dedicated usher at St. Raphael’s; and as a member of the Knight of Columbus he actively participated in helping with bingo and serving meals at their various functions.

In his leisure time, Ed found joy in playing cards, especially euchre and UNO. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, passionately following NASCAR, NFL, and the Chicago Cubs. Our family thanks Very Rev. Dennis Quint, Sister Sharon Rezmer, and Monica Daly for their prayers and visits to Ed. Thanks also to Jim Betzner and Bob Arensdorf for their loyal friendship to Ed. Our family extends deep gratitude to Dr. Brian Loc for his compassionate and professional care, along with the Cardiac Medical staff, especially Tammy, Beth, and Katie. We are grateful to the staff at Harmony Care Center for your kindness to Ed; and will always remember his good friends at the Ecumenical Tower and Harmony. Our family thanks Pat Leonard, Kristin, and Eddie for your kindness to us at this sad time: your concern and friendship will never be forgotten. Most importantly, our family thanks our dear sister Mary; Ed’s guardian angel on earth.

Rita was born on August 19, 1945, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Marguerite (Wagener) Welter. She attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, graduated from Wahlert High School and attended Clarke College all in Dubuque.

She married Richard “Dick” Osterberger on December 30th, 1967, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on March 23, 2017. Rita was a lifelong member of Nativity Parish. She worked for John Deere in Dubuque for 30 years until her retirement, in 2001.

In retirement Rita volunteered at Mercy Gift Shop and subbed as a paraprofessional for the Dubuque Community Schools.

For those who knew Rita, you knew that she loved to be busy, she was a social butterfly. She enjoyed shopping, especially when she was finding a great deal. Throughout her life, she remained very active, enjoyed walking, biking, golfing, bowling and dancing. She was always ready for a game of cards and loved to bake for her family and friends. Traveling was another passion of hers, especially taking trips with her family. She found great joy in attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

Rita’s wardrobe was a vibrant display of colors, especially hot pink, and of course everything matched, and we mean everything! When she called to let you know the pool was open, you knew it was the start of her favorite season, swimsuit season! She wore her swimsuit from sunrise to sunset, no cover-up needed. Her home was a home to many, all were welcome. She loved to entertain, from pool days to the holiday gatherings, especially Christmas which consisted of not only her immediate family but her extended family. To Rita all were her immediate family. Rita had a great love not only for her children and grandchildren, but also for her nieces and nephews.

She had a heart of gold, so many were blessed to have her in their life. Rita touched the lives of many and the memories she left behind will forever be cherished in our hearts.

Rita is survived by her three children: Steve (Lisa) Osterberger, Jeff (Amy) Osterberger, both of Dubuque, and Julie (Chris) Bracey, of Madison, WI. Seven grandchildren; Alli, Bryce, Kaylee and Ellie (fiancé Connor Fitzpatrick) Osterberger; Ava, Niyah, and Nathan Bracey. Her siblings: Jean Vance, Laura Miller, David (Dawn) Welter; sisters and brother-in-law Karen Osterberger, Jim Osterberger and Ann (Steve) Seamer, all of Dubuque; along with many nieces and nephews who she dearly loved.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dick, mother and father-in-law Gerald and Mildred Osterberger, brothers-in-law Jim Miller, Mike Vance, and Dave Osterberger.

In lieu of flowers a Rita Osterberger memorial fund will be established.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, Oak Park Place and Stonehill Health Center, especially the memory care units for their wonderful care they gave to Rita. A special thank you to all of Rita’s family and friends for their unwavering love and support.
