Mark W. Coder
Mark Warren Coder passed away in his home following a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, October 20, just three days after his 60th birthday.
Mark was born on October 17, 1962, in Muscatine, IA. He attended Kirkwood Community College before joining the Army. He then studied drafting at Hamilton Technical College and was employed at HWH Corporation. He later worked as an engineering and project supervisor for Merkle International in Galena, Illinois, which gave him opportunities to travel around the globe. He always had good stories to tell about his experiences in China, India, and Russia, among others.
Mark enjoyed gardening and spending time with family, especially hunting and fishing at the family farm. He had a knack for fixing things and was always on the lookout for ways to make devices work better. He enjoyed leaving surprise presents for others; it made him smile to think of their reaction when they’d find a ham in the freezer or note under a pillow after he’d gone. HE was our greatest gift, and we hope he’s smiling as we think about him now.
Mark was a much-loved husband, parent, son, and brother. He is survived by his wife, Julie (Ortgies) Coder of Asbury, IA; stepson, Claudio Ordonez, of Asbury, IA; parents, James and Caroline (Gerdts) Coder of Letts, IA; sister, Pam Coder, of Davenport, IA; and brother, Lee Coder of Letts, IA, as well as several nieces and nephews, whom he adored.

A logical and rational thinker, Vern enjoyed books on history, a well-kept home, and growing food in his garden. Active until the very end, Vern found health and longevity in staying motivated and curious.
His family left to cherish his memories are, Luella, his wife of 68 years; daughter, Diane (Tim) Weitzel; sons, Mike (Theresa) Pape, and Kevin (Dawn) Pape; grandchildren, Bradley (Meaghan) Weitzel, Erica Weitzel, Skylar Pape, Ariana Pape, Mason Pape, Maxwell Pape; great- grandchildren, Mia, William, & Hannah Weitzel; brother, Eldon Pape; sisters-in law, Maureen Pape and Dorothy Link; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert J. Meier
Robert J. Meier, age 72, of East Dubuque, IL, completed his earthly journey on October 18, 2022, at home while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Robert’s life, a private family service is being held. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Robert’s family.
Robert was born on February 5, 1950, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Wilbert and Alice (Fay) Amling. He devoted his 72 years among us to making the most out of each day and making sure that he was a positive force in the world around him as much as humanly possible. Robert’s love for his family, friends and country were always on display and never did he stumble. He spent many years providing for his family at Flexsteel, then the Dubuque Packing Company, but after they closed, Robert went back to school, and eventually retired from Renaissance Restoration after sharing his time and talents there until the last official day of work. Robert had also earned his Art and Science degrees over the years and always took great pride in his accomplishment in further education. When Robert wasn’t working, you could easily find him working on various projects at home. He was a very talented tradesman and his family continues to live in the homes he built for them, along with leaving a lasting legacy for them to reflect upon during the more difficult days ahead. Robert also enjoyed working in his garage, whether it be on his latest car, or his Harley Davidson which he was blessed to make two trips to Sturgis with. He was a fan of the New York Yankee’s and rarely missed an opportunity to share his wit and wisdom on countless topics, especially where the current state of politics was involved. It breaks our hearts to even consider moving forward in a world without Robert at the helm. His love, determination, and confidence are a rare combination these days and will surely be missed and felt by all who knew and loved him. Thank you, Robert, for always being true to who you were and for never allowing the trials of this life to bring you down without a fight. We will miss you more than words could ever convey accurately and may the Lord keep you now in His grace-filled arms until we meet again.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Robert include,

Kelly J. Sullivan Soley
Kelly Jean Sullivan Soley, 69 of Dubuque, died from stroke complications at Finley Hospital on Saturday, October 15, 2022, just two days shy of her 70th birthday.
Born October 17, 1952, in Savanna, Illinois, the fifth of eight children of Roger and Joan (Kerr) Sullivan. She came from a family of small-town merchants and teachers and was raised in the Northwest Illinois village of Hanover. Her early years were filled with summer adventures with siblings, cousins, and friends at the family home on “Backstreet” and at the family farm located a mile outside of town. On several occasions the family garage was converted into a makeshift stall to house ponies, a burro and even a pet fawn. One summer while showing off her equestrian abilities she fell from her pony in the front yard and broke her arm. Undaunted, she proudly asked all her friends to sign her cast. She enjoyed time spent with her Kerr grandparents in Galena where she nurtured her interest in history. She also spent time helping at the family hardware store.
Always adventurous and unafraid to strike out on her own, she accepted a summer position during her high school years as an au pair for a Highland Park family located on Chicago’s North Shore. For those two summers she was exposed to a wide variety of cultural and artistic experiences, especially at Ravinia. She graduated from Hanover High School in 1970 at a time of sweeping social change. She is remembered by her classmates as being ahead of her time. She lobbied the school administration to allow girls to enroll in shop class and for the boys to take home economics and advocated for a change in the school dress code. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Louis University and an MA from the Department of Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Thereafter, she accepted a television production position with South Dakota Public Television. She also worked in commercial TV for a local network affiliate. She later accepted a position with the University of Wisconsin Platteville Foundation, where she worked until her retirement.
After relocating to Dubuque, she met and married John D. Soley, who taught English at Dubuque Senior High and later at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Consistent with their shared love of literature, Kelly and John wed on Bloomsday, June 16, 1990, at Grace Episcopal Church in Galena, Illinois. She shared many happy years with John until his death in 2016. Kelly especially enjoyed their frequent trips to the Lyric Opera in Chicago, travel to England, many happy trips to Canada to visit John’s siblings and their families and visits with John’s sons, Peter, and Erik.
Kelly was independent minded, creative, sometimes stubborn, but always kind, caring and thoughtful. She was a much-loved daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Survivors include her sister Nancy (Tom) Miller, brothers Scott (Suzanne) Sullivan and Casey Sullivan; brother-in-law, Robert Gable; nieces Kathy Gable, Mary Gable, Sarah Sullivan, and Molly Sullivan Sonderman; nephews, Ryan Gable, Matthew Miller, and Andrew Sullivan; and stepsons, Peter and Erik Soley. Predeceased by parents; sisters, Susan Gable and Deborah Sullivan; and brothers, Mark Sullivan and Jeffrey Sullivan.

David J. McLaughlin
David John McLaughlin, 75, of Dubuque, died Monday, October 17, 2022, at the MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Thursday, October 20, 2022 at Church of the Resurrection.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Dave will be 10:30 am Friday, October 21, 2022, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.
David was born January 30, 1947, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Leo Francis and Darlene Ann Bartella McLaughlin. Dave attended Wahlert High School and later Loras College before graduating from the University of Dubuque.
On August 13, 1966, he married his high school sweetheart Sharon Devaney at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque. The two recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary together.
Dave worked for Peoples Natural Gas for over 35 years until his retirement, and Dave and Sharon also owned and operated The Wood Mill furniture store in Asbury for over 2 decades.
He was a man of deep Catholic faith, and was a member of Church of the Resurrection where he had served as a Eucharistic minister and co-chair for the Resurrection Parish Festival. He had previously been a member of Saint Anthony Catholic Church before that where for many years, Dave and Sharon volunteered together for Pre-Cana and Marriage Encounters.
Among his hobbies, he was an avid euchre player, playing 3 times weekly for years at the American Legion. He bowled league in town for many years, loved to watch sports, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs, and Iowa Hawkeyes. He had a passion and gift for finance and the stock market. He could usually be found watching CNBC in the background, tracking the market daily. Many of his younger co-workers would come to him for help with their own investments and portfolios for many years.
Among his greatest joys was earning the title of “Papa” lovingly from his grandchildren and now great-grandchildren. They kept him going and he loved being around them whenever possible. He loved and was very proud of his family. One of his favorite memories was taking the entire family to Mexico to celebrate his retirement in 2010.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Sharon; three daughters, Kelly (Tim) Edwards of Little Elm, TX, Tracy (Mike) Schaul of Peosta, IA, and Shannon Perlin of Vernon Hills, IL; ten grandchildren, Matthew (Ehricka) Edwards, Ryan (Hailey) Edwards, Tyler (Taylor) Schaul, Austin (Amanda) Schaul, Bailey (Joe) Pitts, Kaitlyn Schaul, Morgan Schaul, Sam Perlin, Luke Perlin, and Elle Perlin; three great-grandchildren, Riley, Grace, and Sutton, and two more great-grandchildren on the way; and one brother, Steve (Annamae) McLaughlin of Liberty, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Jeff McLaughlin, and several aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
The family would like to thank all of the nurses, doctors and ICU staff at MercyOne for their exceptional care.
Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Crematory is in care of the arrangements.

Thaddeus L. Anderson
In the early morning hours of Saturday, October 15, Thaddeus L. Anderson answered his final call to be with our Lord. Thad, devoted husband, father, son, brother, friend, and mentor to many, will be deeply missed. For the past 29 years, he served as a physician and partner at Dubuque Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a hard worker who cared passionately for his family, friends, partners, coworkers, and patients.
A visitation will be held at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home from 3 to 7pm, Thursday, October 20th. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church at 10:30am, Friday, October 21st.
Born in DeRidder, Louisiana to Quentin and Barbara (Hoffman) Anderson and oldest of 4, his family eventually settled in Park Forest, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle Campus with a B.S. in Pharmacy, working as a Pharmacist while continuing on to Medical School at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Urbana-Champaign. It was there he met his future wife, Michele. He graduated medical school as Valedictorian and went on to complete his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Iowa. After 4 years of active duty with the U.S. Army as a physician in Germany and Missouri, he was honorably discharged at the rank of Major. He joined Dubuque OB/GYN in 1993.
Thad was involved in multiple medical organizations including: The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, where he served on various committees and in leadership roles, culminating in being elected Chair of the Midwest District VI and receiving the McCain Fellowship; The Central Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology, where he was elected as a Trustee, and was invited to join the Central Travel Club; University of Iowa as adjunct Clinical Professor, Friend of OB/GYN Residency Program, Site Director for Community Based OB/GYN Clinical Education, and Chair of Iowa Maternal Mortality Committee. It is a sign of who he was that there are many more we don’t have space to list here.
Dr. Anderson was a beloved member of the Dubuque community. As his family can attest, during most errands he was recognized (even in elevators in Chicago!) and greeted, or thanked for delivering their baby. He was finding more and more that he was delivering the babies of babies he had delivered, much to his amusement.
In addition to his busy practice, he loved being a part of his children’s pursuits, as a Troop 7 Boy Scout Leader, where he enjoyed going on High Adventures; an AYSO soccer referee; and as an active member of St. Anthony Parish. He was a generous, caring and loving husband and father. Thad enjoyed nothing more than traveling all over the world and sharing a delicious meal and a great glass of wine with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Michele, and their four children: Aric (Brigid Kelley), Nick, Alaine, and Katie; his mother, Barbara, two brothers, Mark (Kris) and Kevin, his sister, Juliana (S.O. Kevin); mother-in-law, Eloise Kennedy; in-laws: David (Julia) Kennedy, Phil (Julie) Kennedy, Ed (Vicki) Kennedy and Melanie (Brad) Schultz; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Quentin and father-in-law, Don Kennedy.
If Thad had written this, it would have been only five words: I lived a good life.
