Daniel F. Sullivan

Daniel F. Sullivan, 83, formerly of East Dubuque, IL, died from complications of Parkinson’s and Dementia on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Pleasantview Nursing Home in Kalona, IA.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, on Friday, July 7, 2023 at St Mary’s Catholic Church, East Dubuque, IL., with Fr. Dennis Vargas officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by members of the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Visitation will be from 4 PM to 8 PM, on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, IL, where the parish rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

The guiding light in Dan’s life has always been a deep devotion to, pride in, and love for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandson.  Everything he did was aimed at building a better life for his family.

Dan was born of humble beginnings on November 17, 1939, in his parents’ bathroom in East Dubuque, Illinois, the son of Francis M “Sully” Sullivan and Margaretta H “Bip” (Sendt) Sullivan.  He attended and graduated from East Dubuque High School where he excelled on the athletic field and court being named to numerous All-City teams in football, baseball and basketball.  Being an avid sports fan and participant did not end after high school.  Dan played shortstop and batted “clean-up” for several town teams and led the Lux Club to the 1967 World Softball Tournament.  One of his fondest sports memories was being intentionally walked with the bases loaded while playing slow pitch softball with the John Deere Experimental club.  And, he never let any of us forget it.

Immediately after his high school graduation in 1957, Dan enlisted in the United States Marine Corps stationed in San Diego, California.  He served until his Honorable Discharge in 1960, attaining the rank of Corporal.  At the conclusion of his military service, Dan worked for 41 years as a heavy equipment operator at John Deere Dubuque works until his retirement in 2001.  He always spoke very highly of his career and fondly of his co-workers at “Deere’s”.  These are the friendships that lasted his lifetime.

On September 21, 1963, Dan married the love of his life, Faye “Arlene” Johnson at St Mary’s Catholic Church in East Dubuque, Illinois.  Dan and Arlene always felt blessed by the arrival of their three sons, and boasted that they “never missed a game”.  One of Dan’s greatest joys in life was the twenty years he spent coaching his boys in East Dubuque’s Little League program.  Dan served as a wonderful role model and mentor to many of the young men in town.  He will be truly missed.

Dan is survived by his bride, Arlene; son Tim of Kalona, Iowa, along with grandchildren Christina, Carley and husband Daniel Abresch, Danny and Claire; son Mark of Dallas, Texas, along with granddaughter Ashley and husband Brendan Murphy with great-grandson, Hugh Patrick of Chicago, Illinois; and son Tony and Tracy of Canon City Colorado, along with grandson Cole.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the charitable organization of your choice.

The family wishes to thank Pleasantview Nursing Home and Hospice of Johnson County for the extraordinary care and support given to Dan throughout his struggle.

Mary E. Weisnewski

Mary E. (Mueller) Weisnewski, age 102, of Bellevue Iowa  died on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at the Excellent Adult Family Home in Seattle, Washington.

Mary was born to Alfred and Nettie (Heacock) Mueller in Bellevue on June 15, 1921.  She graduated from St.  Joseph’s High School and then worked as a teacher in the country schools in the Bellevue area, driving a Model A Ford over the country roads in all sorts of weather.  Mary joined the Navy during World War II and was stationed in Seattle and worked as a radio person.  She was responsible for coding and decoding messages sent and received to the American forces in the South Pacific.  While stationed in Seattle, she met Joseph “Ski” Weisnewski, a sergeant in the Marine Corp.  It was not love at first sight.  Ski controlled the rations available for the night crew where Mary worked.  Mary was tired of bologna sandwiches every night and wanted better food for the graveyard shift. She struck a deal where she agreed to teach Ski how to drive a jeep in exchange for better rations.  As Ski would say many times over the years, she never stopped telling him how to drive.  Eventually love bloomed and Mary and Ski were married in Seattle in November of 1944.  After the war, Mary returned to teaching while Ski remained in the Marine Corp.  This resulted in numerous moves across the country including Maine, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Virginia, California and Iowa.   Mary obtained teaching jobs at the various locations, including teaching kindergarten in Bellevue for a few years.  Mary obtained a master’s degree in Education from San Diego State College and became a certified reading teacher for the San Diego School District.  Mary retired from teaching in the 1990’s and she and Ski moved back to Bellevue.  Mary was very involved in genealogy and frequently helped Anabelle Wacker researching family histories.  Mary was a regular volunteer at the Bellevue Library and maintained notebooks containing local history and records of births and deaths.  She enjoyed reading, gardening and community service.  She was an avid traveler visiting China, Poland, England, Australia, Ireland, Portugal, Canada, Mexico, Spain, South Africa and just about everywhere in the US.

Mary is survived by her two children, Joseph (Mary) Weisnewski in Seattle, Washington and Anya (Eamonn) Stanley in Pismo Beach, California; a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Ripley; four grandchildren, Jonathan (Maria) Weisnewski, Catherine Weisnewski, Ailsa Weisnewski and Tara (Simon) Morgan; and four great-grandchildren.

Richard L. Blackburn

Richard L. Blackburn, age 66, of Dubuque, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 23, 2023, at his home.  To honor Richard’s life, private family services were held.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting the family.

Richard was born on January 9, 1957, in Illinois, son of David and Joy (Turner) Blackburn.

He grew up in Illinois where he graduated from Princeton High School.  After school, Richard moved around doing construction work and automobile repair and rebuilding.  He loved his Harley Davidson’s and rode for years until his health issues forced him to give it up.  He married Corrine Plossel and adopted her children, Bobby and Peggy Jo.  Sadly, Richard and Corrine would end up going their separate ways.  He liked watching football and was a die hard Packers fan, who loved harassing the fans of other teams.  We are sad at losing Richard, but know that he is now at peace, free of the health issues he has faced these past years.

Those left to cherish Richard’s memory include

his children,
Bobby Blackburn and Peggy Jo Blackburn both of Dubuque, IA;

numerous grandchildren;

his siblings,
Diane (Frank) Jackson, Lake Thunderbird, IL,
David Blackburn, State Center, IA,
Kenny (Marcia) Schmitt, Dubuque, IA,
Linda Douglas, Crystal Lake, IL
and Cathy Jo (Phil) Mihalakis, Dubuque, IA;

and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Phil Blackburn; and a sister Joanne Harmening.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.behrfuneralhome.com
