Margaret Schroeder
Margaret “Peggy” (Roeder) Schroeder, 87, of Bellevue passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2022.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 am, Monday, June 20, 2022 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue. Visitation will be 9:00 am until service time, also on Monday at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Services will be livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube: St. Joseph Bellevue-Sts. Peter & Paul Springbrook pages.
Local arrangements are entrusted to Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue.
Peggy was born September 24, 1934, in Bellevue to Harry and Gladys Roeder. She graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1952 and was a proud member of the Mercy School of Nursing Class of 1955 in Dubuque. She married Jim Schroeder, of Dubuque, on October 15, 1955. For the next 45 years, they were a team who enjoyed traveling, antique cars, the caboose, boating on the Mississippi, and cooking.
Peggy worked at Bellevue Memorial Hospital for many years and then at Mill Valley Care Center after the hospital closed, where she found a special calling in geriatric nursing. She also provided loving care to countless family members and Bellevue residents (everything from allergy shots to end-of-life support). Someone once referred to her as “the nurse for the town of Bellevue,” and anyone who was the recipient of her loving care was lucky indeed. Peggy’s selfless caregiving left little time for hobbies, but she volunteered at Mill Valley, St. Joseph’s Church and Red Cross blood drives. She was also a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Peggy was a true “baby whisperer” – she worked her magic on all her grandchildren, who grew to love spending time at her house and sleeping in “the nest.”
Peggy is survived by her children Molly Issen of Freeport, IL; Katy (Kurt) Timmerman of Towanda, IL; Tony (Jayne) Schroeder and Dan (Julie) Schroeder, both of Bellevue; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister Rose Jackson and brothers Dave and Jim Roeder.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 2000; her son, Andy; her brother, Tom Roeder and infant sister, Patricia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe directed to St. Joseph’s Church of Bellevue, Hospice of Dubuque or Sisters of St. Francis Dubuque in Peggy’s memory.
Online condolences maybe expressed to the family at www.hachmannfuneralhome.com

Ellen Conlon Rose

by John P. Mulgrew
“Jazbo Of Old Dubuque”
“Listen, young Patrick, and young Mr. Steve,
I’d like a word with you two,
You’re no longer the cocks of the walk, milords,
I’ve some tidings both thrilling and new.
You no longer will rule the household
With sway so arbitrary,
For something new has been added –
Little Ellen Mary.
So mark me well, from this day forth
You must each be a proper mister,
You’re no longer the lords of the manor, my lads,
You now have a baby sister!”
Ellen Conlon Rose was born in Dubuque, Iowa on October 20, 1943 and passed away at the age of 78 on June 11th, 2022. She was the third of eight children born to Orlin and Suzanne (Mulgrew) Conlon. Ellen was born with Cerebral Palsy. Although life dealt her challenges, she never let these define her. She approached life with courage, never one to sit on the sidelines. Her faith and love for God came before all. Ellen loved her family and friends and her interest in people was truly sincere. Ellen always said, “We have the best family in the world.”
Ellen lived for 52 years in the community of Milford, Iowa, where she was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She truly felt blessed by God and practiced her faith daily. She had the distinction of being named an Honorary ‘Mayor For a Day.’ She also served as Parade Grand Master for a high school homecoming parade. Her many friends in Milford considered her to be a part of their families. It was often hard to find Ellen at home as her love for friends, driving, biking and walking was her priority. Even the harsh Iowa winter storms weren’t a match for Ellen’s will to find her friends for coffee.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Rose and her parents. She is survived by her son, Scott (April) Rose, four grandchildren; Logan, Anna, Ashley and Sierra Rose, brothers and sisters; Pat (Cathy) Conlon, Steve (Lorrie) Conlon, Julie (Mike) Wilson, Tim (Christine) Conlon, Phil (Susan) Conlon, Fred (Tina) Conlon and Suzie (Richard) Henry, along with many nieces/nephews and grand nieces/nephews; special friends Mary Jo and Gordy Jorgensen, Greg and Michael Jorgensen and Karina (Jorgensen) Van Wyhe.
The family would like to thank Stonehill Care Center staff for the love that they shared with Ellen. Thank you also to Jeremiah and Hospice of Dubuque for the excellent care of Ellen and her family.
There will be a mass for Ellen at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 16, 2022, held at St. Columbkille Church, 1230 Rush Street, Dubuque, followed by a private family burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.
Ellen’s nephew, Tim Henry, filmed a typical day in her life in Milford: https://youtu.be/EVVNYvcH1yk.
Her infectious laugh and her love for neighbors and friends was hard to beat.

Dave was a very passionate, vocal, and charismatic man. He enjoyed fishing, golf, sports, and debates with a family member or friend while drinking a beer. Dave was a man of many words. He loved to talk, talk, and talk some more. You couldn’t walk into a place without him knowing someone and calling out their name or someone calling out his name; Dave was a great friend to many. He enjoyed playing cards, specifically Euchre, and was extremely animated while playing.
Dave was a dog lover and always wanted to have one by his side. He often “accidentally” dropped food on the floor to allow for some treats for his furry family member.
Dave was a wonderful grandpa who spent a lot of time going to games, laughing, and tickling his eight grandchildren. There was always a smile on his face when they were around.
Dave is survived by his daughter Angela (Chris) Noel, their children, Alayna, Cayden, Creighton, and Camden, and his son Eric (Thien-Nga) Althaus, along with their children, Haley, Huyen, Thai-Hien, and Isabella, siblings Mike (Teo) Althaus, Steve (Pat) Althaus, Nina (John) Meyer, Tony (Peg) Althaus, Nanette (Chuck) Meeker, brother-in-law Dan Zwack, many nieces and nephews, his significant other, Cheryl Peloquin, and his dog, Maggie Mae.

Robert W. Berning
Robert W. “Bob” Berning, age 67, of Galena, IL, was called home to the loving arms of his Lord and Savior on June 12, 2022, at home while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Bob’s life, a private family graveside service will be held at Casper Creek Natural Cemetery in Galena, IL. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Bob’s family.
Bob was born on February 1, 1955, in Cuba City, WI, a son to Harry and Joan (Peacock) Berning. He grew up on the family dairy farm and would continue the tradition with his own family as the years progressed. Bob has been blessed to own multiple farms over the years and found great satisfaction in not only establishing them to his own unique state of perfection, but also through the ability to give God the glory by providing food for his family and nation. Bob was united to his soul-mate, Mary Sproule, on October 27, 1973, and the couple was also blessed with three daughters of their own. Bob was an owner/operator with his company, Horsecents Transportation, and thoroughly enjoyed all 38 years that he was able to travel the country while providing for his family. He was even blessed to take them on many trips around the states and share with them the wonders of God’s country which he witnessed on a regular basis. He was well known to possess the sharpest looking semis around and was never timid about generously sharing his experience and wisdom with his fellow truckers. Bob was an avid outdoorsman at heart and when he wasn’t navigating his 18-wheeler down the highways, you could easily find him out on the boat with a fishing pole in hand, or showing off his uniquely talented water-skiing skills. He also enjoyed venturing in the woods on a crisp morning in search of the next big buck, riding and relaxing on the open road on his motorcycle, and spending a little time on horseback when time allowed. But, Bob’s love for hard work and the outdoors always came in second to his love for his family and his Creator. His priorities in life were abundantly clear to all who knew and loved him and if the opportunity arose to sit around the table with the grandkids for a few hands of cards, you could be sure that nothing was going to interfere with that moment and memory. Bob was also a joyful servant and relentless witness to the loving grace offered to all of us through God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Bob’s love for his fellow man and their eternal salvation was never in question and if he could be the salt and light in someone’s day, he was sure to complete the task at hand. It’s difficult to envision the difficult days ahead without our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend physically present within them, but we will definitely hear and feel the confident wisdom of Bob’s legacy in all that we do moving forward. Thank you, Bob, for always being the world’s best wheeler/dealer grounded in integrity and may the Lord keep you safe now in His loving hands until we meet again as you hear those words you’ve been waiting to hear for so many years; “Well done Thy good and faithful servant, Well Done!”
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Bob include,
his beautiful bride of 49 years,
Mary Berning, Galena, IL;
his three adored daughters,
Rebecca “Becky” (Mark Yarbrough) Berning, Galena, IL,
Carissa “Carrie” (Tom) Johnson, Missoula, MT,
and Alicia (Jeremy) Edmonds, Galena, IL;
