Sue A. Galle
Sue Ann Galle, 79, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on April 19, 2026, at Ennoble Nursing Home.
A wake service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2026, followed by a visitation from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Catholic Church, with Rev. Raymond Burkle officiating. An additional visitation will be held prior to Mass, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Sue was born on March 11, 1947, in Edgewood, Iowa, the daughter of Larry and Virginia (Welchert) Thein. She graduated from Ed-Co High School in 1964. On December 27, 1967, she was united in marriage to John “Jack” Galle at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque.
Sue worked at Northwest Bell for 16 years. She later worked at Finley Hospital until her retirement and also spent time working for the City of Dubuque in the Parking Division. She was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Sue cherished her family above everything. She was fiercely loyal and protective of her family and friends. Her siblings were all very close to her. She was a generous and devoted mother. Children to Sue included her own boys but also all her nieces and nephews, extra friends her boys brought home and one very special extra son, Scott Frost with whom she shared a particular bond.
Sue’s greatest joy came when she became a grandmother. Her four grandchildren were the light of her life and she never tired of bragging about them. She loved to tell stories of their lives to everyone and proud is not a strong enough word for her feelings.
She enjoyed traveling on cruises and to see family. She liked to care for her yard and took pride in her home. She enjoyed watching musicals and plays, especially if family members were performing.
Sue is survived by her husband, Jack; her sons, Michael (Deborah) Galle of Indiana and John (Jen) Galle of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Megan, Ryan, Natalie, and James; and seven siblings, Sandy Freisenger, Georgia (Mark) Brown, Judy (Ron) Wolf, Sylvia Kluesner, Larry (Kim) Thein, Pat (Jeanette) Thein, and Mike (Peggy) Thein. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Larry and Virginia; her son, Jeff; and her sister, Jill.
In lieu of flowers, a Sue Galle memorial fund will be established with donations going to her favorite charities.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Ennoble and the University of Iowa ICU.
Sr. Margaret A. McGinn
Sister Margaret “Maggie” A. McGinn, BVM, (Daniel Anne), 91, died Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at Mount Carmel Bluffs, Dubuque, Iowa.
Bernice Brandel
Bernice “Bernie” Brandel passed away April 18, 2026. She is now flying free, joining her husband, Dewey, in the great beyond. Alzheimer’s is a cruel disease which stole so much from her. But her legacy will always reflect the warmness and devotion she embodied in her healthier years.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Bernie was born to Elmer and Mary Klaas on November 6, 1940. She spent her years of youth on the family’s farm in Kieler, WI. It was during this time she learned the value of hard work, the importance of family, and that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach.
Bernice married her kindred spirit, Gerald ‘Dewey’ Brandel on June 10,1961. Together they shared 54 years of marriage before his passing in 2015. Their marriage was one filled with laughter and built on a strong foundation of adoration, respect, and devotion. Together they raised 3 children, Lori, Debbie, and Roger.
Bernie was meticulous in everything she did. From the many years of secretarial work at Dubuque Hempstead High School, to her ability to never forgot a birthday. She was meticulous in her perfectly cleaned laundry she hung out on the lines, and the way she organized the seashells she and Dewey collected on their annual visits to Bonita Springs, Florida. We will always remember her punctuality and impressive organizational skills.
Bernice was a humble woman who found joy in the simple things in life. A talented seamstress, she made many outfits over the years for her kids and grandkids. She always saved the fabric scraps so their dolls could have matching ensembles. Known for her sweets, she spent countless hours in the kitchen making jams and pies from the fruits from the garden. Above all, she enjoyed the quiet moments in the early evening spent with her husband sitting on their bench on Cortez Drive.
Later in life, Bernice was the quintessential grandmother. Without fail, Grandma Bernie had treats, specifically sweets, ready for any visitors. You never left her house hungry. It seemed stuffing us to capacity was a measure of her love. We will always cherish the way she lavished and spoiled us with love and adoration at every opportunity.
Left to cherish her memories and recreate her recipes are her 3 children: Lori (Mike) Stecher, Debbie (Pat) Conry, and Roger (Laura) Brandel. 9 grandchildren: Dillon, Audrey, Dallas and Valerie, Courtney & Casey, and Hannah, Tessa, & Jenna. 9 great-grandchildren, Drake & Silas, Ella, Carlin & Nash, Nora & Clara, Pearl and Teddy. A sister, Carol, and many in-laws and nieces and nephews.
In her memory, we simply ask you to visit your loved ones, especially those in nursing homes. Memorials may be given to Bethany Home.
We cannot thank Bethany Home enough for the exceptional care they provide our mother/grandma over the past 12 years. We are beyond blessed to know she was always with people who celebrated with her on her good days, and navigated her bad days with the utmost compassion, patience, and dignity. For this, we will never be able to thank you enough!

Cindy was born on March 24, 1958, in Chicago, IL, a daughter to William J. and Elaine M. (Rausch) Wieczorek. She was gifted with a strong will and an even stronger mind to compliment it as she took on the world ahead. Cindy worked in finance in Chicago before eventually making her way to New York where she committed her time and talents working in the World Trade Center. Her natural abilities and personal drive opened doors that many only dream of walking through.
She eventually worked in the tourism industry and made her way to the Galena area where she owned the Felt Manor Bed and Breakfast for some time. She spent another 23 years working as the finance director for the City of Galena until her eventual retirement finally arrived in 2023. Cindy always treasured the opportunity to impact the world around her in any way she could and the legacy she leaves behind possesses clear evidence that her efforts were never fruitless. We are going to miss Cindy’s love and light walking among us and although we are heartbroken with her sudden absence from our physical lives today, we are forever grateful for the years she spent with us as well. Elizabeth J. Pickel
Elizabeth J. “Bette” Pickel, age 84, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on April 16, 2026, at Stonehill Care Center while surrounded by her loving family. To honor Bette’s life, a Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 3685 County HHH in Kieler, WI, with Rev. Thomas Kelley officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Family and friends are invited to join in food and fellowship at Bette’s Celebration of Life following the mass at 1:00 p.m. at Burkey’s Bar and Grill, 10638 Key West Drive in Dubuque. Entombment will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum at a later date. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Bette’s family.
Bette was born on May 16, 1941, in Kieler, WI, a daughter to Walter and Marian (Horn) Burbach. She possessed a kind and gentle spirit along with a love for family and friends which was continually on display. Bette eventually met and married the love of her life, Kenneth L. “Ken” Pickel and the two were blessed with 63 wonderful years together and 4 children of their own to love and nurture along the way. Ken was sadly called home ahead of her on September 29, 2023. She spent her working years primarily as an industrial seamstress with Frommelt Safety Products which eventually became Rite Hite, but she also invested her time and talents in the cafeteria at the Immaculate Conception School, as a bus driver, a cashier at the Iowa Greyhound Park, Advance Design and even as a real estate agent before moving into retirement. Bette made countless friends throughout her career and always gave her best in every position she held.
In her free-time, Bette seemed to lean into social events most of all. In her younger years, golf and dart leagues were consistently near the top of her list, and later in life an evening at the Moose Lodge was a welcomed event, but a warm sunny day at the beach would also suffice when the opportunities presented themselves. Bette and Ken also spent many summers together at the River of Lakes in Bagley, WI. A little quality time camping and fishing with family and friends was the perfect way to recharge while creating memories and friendships which would last a lifetime. As life progressed and her family grew, time with them by her side became her favorite places to be. Family gatherings were clearly her happy place, but even if a single grandchild alongside her was the most the day could offer, she was beyond content and satisfied. Bette was undeniably the “Best Cook in the World” for those who knew her well and many memories were made by simply gathering around her table. It’s difficult to imagine a world moving forward without Bette’s love and light shining so brightly and effortlessly upon all whom she loved and adored. Thank you, Bette, for being the best wife, mother and grandmother any of us could ever hope for and may the Lord grant you peace now and keep you safe in His loving arms until we all meet again.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Bette include,

Alice L. Butler
In Loving Memory of Alice L. Butler
Beloved Wife, Devoted Mother, Quiet Champion of Community April 12, 1931 – April 15, 2026.
Alice L. Butler of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, at the age of 95. A woman of grace, humility, and unwavering compassion, Alice lived a life defined not by the recognition she received, but by the countless lives she lifted up without ever seeking attention for herself. Her legacy is woven deeply into the heart of Dubuque—a community she cherished and quietly strengthened for decades.
Born Alice Lehmann, she grew up with a love of learning, athletics, and service. A proud alumna of Laurel School and Wellesley College, she carried forward a lifelong passion for fitness, teamwork, and education. Her early love of field hockey and her belief in the power of strong teachers shaped her understanding of how encouragement can change a life—an understanding she later poured into her philanthropic work.
Alice married the love of her life, John E. Butler, and together they built a partnership rooted in devotion, shared purpose, and a deep commitment to their family and community. Their marriage was a true collaboration—one that blended warmth, humor, and a shared belief that blessings are meant to be passed on. Alice’s family was her greatest joy, and she nurtured each member with quiet strength, steadfast support, and a deep, abiding love. She was deeply devoted to her children, Susan and Andrew, taking great pride in the lives they built and always offering her steady encouragement, wisdom, and unconditional love. She supported their educational and athletic endeavors with passion, cheering, coaching, and getting them to and from their events and activities. Throughout her life, she supported family deeply with love, laughter and smiles. She was blessed to have several grandchildren and great grandchildren who would make her smile.
Though she never sought the spotlight, Alice’s impact on Dubuque and beyond is profound. She served as president of the YWCA, contributed her time to the Visiting Nurse Association Junior Board, and the Girl Scouts. Her leadership was always gentle, always steady, and always focused on helping others rise.
Alongside her husband, Alice became one of the region’s most humble philanthropists. Their generosity helped shape the cultural, educational, and scientific landscape of Dubuque. The Alice L. Butler Science Center at the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center stands as a testament to her love of nature and learning. John and Alice Butler Hall at the University of Dubuque reflects their belief in the transformative power of the arts. Their support for the University of Iowa’s vision research, Laurel School’s Butler Campus, and the University of Dubuque’s Heritage Center and Opus 97 pipe organ further demonstrates a lifetime of giving rooted in compassion rather than recognition.
In 2024, Alice and John made one of the most significant gifts in the history of the University of Dubuque to establish the John and Alice Butler College of Osteopathic Medicine, Iowa’s first new medical school in more than a century. Even then, Alice preferred to remain in the background, letting the work speak for itself.
Through every act of service, every quiet donation, every moment of encouragement, Alice embodied the belief that true generosity is measured not in accolades, but in the lives touched and opportunities created. She lived that belief fully.
Alice’s love for Dubuque was constant and deep. She delighted in its riverfront, its history, its people, and its promise. She believed in this community—and she helped it flourish in ways that will continue to benefit generations to come.
She is survived by her beloved husband, John; children, Susan (Ed) Ritts and Andrew (Debi) Butler, both of Dubuque; grandchildren Edwin Ritts III, Sidney (Josh) Eskew; grandchildren Ryan (Priscilla) Butler, Cole & Mason Ritts; great grandchildren Nellie & Nore Eskew and Isabella & Julia Butler; brother-in-law, Tim (Nancy) Butler; beloved nieces and nephews; and a community forever grateful for her gentle strength and boundless kindness.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Heritage Center in Dubuque.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to The University of Dubuque Scholarship Fund and Hospice of Dubuque.
May her memory be a blessing, and may her quiet legacy of love, humility, and upliftment continue to inspire all who follow.

Michael J. Woolf
Michael J. “Mike” Woolf, age 76, of Platteville, WI, completed his earthly journey on April 16, 2026, at the Edenbrook Care Center while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Mike’s life, a private family service is being held at a later date. Burial will be in the Cornelia Cemetery. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Mike’s family.
Mike was born on October 11, 1949, in Lancaster, WI, a son to John and Shirley (Winkers) Woolf. He was gifted with skillful hands and a personality which helped him to make friends everywhere he went in life. After graduation, Mike went on to honorably serve his country with the U.S. Air Force from 1967-1971 with a year in Vietnam. He met his beautiful bride, Marie Richter, and the two were united in marriage on February 21, 1970. They were blessed with 56 wonderful years together as they faced the world hand in hand each day. Mike spent his working career in the Maintenance Department at Flexsteel Industries, investing over 37 years until he eventually retired in 2004.
Mike carried his skills into his personal life as well and was truly a “Jack of all Trades”. From carpentry to welding, if there was a project, repair or vision that was placed into Mike’s hands, you could be sure it would be completed without exception. He and Marie also enjoyed traveling, especially together on their motorcycles. They took countless trips with the camper in tow traveling over 200,000 miles across the U.S. Mike enjoyed motorcycles, cars, planes and tractors and if there was a opportunity to examine and discuss any of the above, he was always ready to participate and share his knowledge and appreciation with every new adventure he stumbled into.
Mike was a gentle giant at heart with a big smile and coupled with a kind and patient spirit, his ability to strike up a conversation at a moment’s notice was continually unhindered. We are going to miss Mike more than words could ever hope to accurately depict and we are forever grateful for the 76 years the Lord was gracious enough to share him with us. May his legacy live on vividly within the hearts and minds of all who knew him moving forward and may the Lord grant him peace now from his earthly health battles until we all meet again. Frank and Lois both retired from Western Dubuque Schools at the same time. They did much traveling, bus trips, horse racing at the Quad Cities, and playing Euchre.
While Lois enjoyed coffee and luncheon with her friends, Frank enjoyed playing golf with his buddies. Lois was always up for a game of croquet or Rummikub with her children and grandchildren.
In between all the fun, Lois always found time for gardening, canning, baking, and cooking. She was famous for her molasses cookies and rhubarb custard pie.
