Burton Butler
Burton Butler, 86, of Dubuque, passed away January 22, 2026, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque. In lieu of services, the family will gather at a later date for a celebration of Burt’s life.
Burt was born on May 16, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa. Burt was the oldest of Don and Lucille Butler’s four children and grew up on a small farm on Derby Grange Road, attending the one-room Derby Grange School. He inherited much strength from his indomitable mother.
Burt and his siblings knew long days of work on the farm – from early mornings milking to hot sweaty days bailing hay. Burt graduated in 1957 from Dubuque Senior High, where he met many lifelong friends, some becoming “the golf guys” in later years. He attended the University of Dubuque, graduating in 1961 with a degree in Physics. After graduation, Burt was employed by John Deere Dubuque Works for his entire career.
While in college, Burt met Ellen Dominy whom he married in 1961. Burt and Ellen’s first adventure together started when Burt was drafted into the Army and they moved to Edgewood, Maryland where he served two years in the Army Chemical Corps. While there, they had their first son, Brett (Laura) Butler (Bernard, IA). They returned to Dubuque and had two more children, Beth (Terry) Schaul (Oconomowoc, WI) and Bart (Elizabeth) Butler (Celebration, FL).
Burt and Ellen were a great team, mapping out life together. That applied to family road trips, too. Every summer before shut-down, Burt could be found planning and routing the next Butler family trip. The early years were always fishing in Spooner, WI. Burt was an avid history buff, and particularly a student of the Civil War. He planned multiple trips with those historic sites in mind. He especially loved the relaxing beaches of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Burt took his role as provider seriously. He was incredibly hard working and thrived in his career at John Deere. Burt enjoyed the management of systems and people and was admired in his leadership roles. He wrote two books for his children, sharing his management philosophies. Burt retired as the Facility General Manager in 1999 after 38 years.
Burt also thrived in his retirement. He and Ellen traveled regularly. They often visited Ellen’s sister in Arizona, and they traveled internationally with several trips to Europe. They loved going to Florida to visit their son Bart, Elizabeth and Fiona. And a big piece of Burt’s retirement was golf. He applied his studious ways to the game of golf after retirement, enjoying weekly golf (and burgers and beers) with the golf guys. He even achieved the rare hole-in-one at Bunker golf course.
Burt was a beloved father, grandfather, and uncle. He especially adored his grandchildren, always keeping tabs on their schooling and jobs. Whether he was called Grandpa or Papa, it was always with much love and admiration from his five grandchildren, Morgan and Benjamin Butler (Des Moines, IA), Calvin (New York, NY), and Olivia (Chicago, IL) Schaul; and Fiona (Miami, FL) Butler.
Burt is survived by two children, two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, five grandchildren, sister, Janice (Bob) Miller and brother, Dean (Patti) Butler, sister-in-law, Mary (Dick) Haupert, brother-in-law, David (Ruth) Dominy and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen; his son, Bart; his parents; sister, Jeanette Anderson; sisters-in-law, Patti Butler and Jane (Ken) Dalsing; brothers-in-law, brother Bob Miller, Phillip Dominy, Dick Haupert and James Dominy.

Jean A. “Gert” (Maiers) Van Deusen of Bellevue, Iowa, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026, at Mill Valley Care Center, surrounded by care and compassion. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 24th at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellevue, with burial to follow in the Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the Mass from 9:00–10:30 am at Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home in Bellevue.
Gert was born on September 14, 1932, in Bankston, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Marie (Greiner) Maiers. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Bellevue in 1950, where she was an accomplished 6-on-6 girls basketball player and proudly helped win the area championship in 1949. After high school, she attended the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport before moving to Hammond, Indiana, where her sense of adventure led her to enlist in the United States Air Force in 1954.
While serving in the Air Force, Gert continued her love of basketball by playing on recreational teams and enjoyed traveling to different bases. On November 19, 1955, she married Clarence “Van” Van Deusen at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh, New York. She was honorably discharged in 1956 as an Airman Second Class. During Van’s military career, the family lived at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, in Grand Heights, Japan, and Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY, before returning home to Bellevue in 1969.
After settling back in Bellevue, Gert worked for 23 years at Jaeger Hardware in Dubuque as Office Manager. Never one to stop learning, she attended the University of Dubuque while working full-time and earned a degree in Business Management and Accounting, something she was very proud of.
Gert was a lifelong sports enthusiast who often attended Marquette High School games and loved following her favorite teams and players online. She cheered faithfully for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Pittsburgh Steelers and had a special fondness for Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo. Her love of NASCAR ran so deep that in her 70s she celebrated her favorite driver, Matt Kenseth, by getting a black-and-yellow checkered flag tattoo – proving she never lost her spunk. She also made an annual tradition of attending the Iowa State High School Basketball Tournament in Des Moines.
In addition to basketball trips, Gert loved visiting the Iowa State Fair each year and was always ready to pack a bag for a new adventure. She especially enjoyed trips to Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Las Vegas, and Tama with cousins and friends, as well as visits and trips with her friends in Red Hats. At home, she was happiest playing Bingo, cards (especially 500), or a competitive game of Yahtzee.

Eileen M. Miller
Eileen M. Miller, 94, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Sherrill, passed away on January 6, 2026, at Bethany Home in Dubuque surrounded by family.
Family and friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, where a memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m.
Eileen was born on April 21, 1931, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Alvin and Irene (Bany) Jecklin. She grew up on a farm in Durango and received her education at Five Points School through eighth grade, and Dubuque Senior High School, graduating in the class of 1948.
Eileen married Marvin A. Miller on August 22, 1950, at the Sherrill United Methodist Church and last August they celebrated 75 years together. Eileen and Marvin farmed together, and she loved living on the farm. In addition to raising poultry and sheep, she was known for her pickled beets, canned beef, jams and jellies, and Christmas sugar cookies. Her vegetable garden was always surrounded by beautiful red canna lilies (a gift from her Grandma Bany in 1950). She was an accomplished seamstress, making prom and wedding dresses for her daughters, and dresses and American Girl matching pajamas for her granddaughters. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren; on the farm they got to experience life in the country, feeding lambs, snapping beans, and playing with kittens.
Eileen was known for her support of family, friends, church, and community. She was an active member of the Sherrill United Methodist Church and its Women’s Society, working at church suppers, ice cream socials, and lunch stands. For more than 30 years she volunteered at Camp Albrecht Acres and was inducted into their Volunteer Hall of Fame. She and Marvin had many wonderful friends. In her own words, her fondest memories were of family and friends having great times while working together. We will always remember her strong work ethic and her quiet, smiling presence.
Eileen is survived by her husband Marvin; daughters, Diane (Rich) Jackson, Shoreview MN, Marlene (Bill) Slough, Urbana, IL, and Karen (Joe) Gonzalez of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Jennifer Jackson, Rachel (Colin) Slough Johnson, Dan (Susan), Nina, and Andrew (Erica) Gonzalez; great-grandchildren, Luis, Victor, Marvin, and Violet Gonzalez; a brother Gerald Jecklin; sisters-in-law, Sally Jecklin, Twila Griffith, and Pat Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
Those that went before her include her parents; her in-laws (Ben and Esther Miller); a brother, Delmar Jecklin; sister-in-law, Ruth Miller; brothers-in-law, Melvin Miller, Daryl Griffith, and Elmer Miller; niece, Carolyn (Miller) Schultz; and nephew, Larry Miller.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Camp Albrecht Acres Foundation, 14837 Sherrill Rd, Sherrill, IA 52073, or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank Sandy Koltes, the staff at Bethany Home, and Hospice of Dubuque for their compassionate care of Eileen.
Charlene M. Esser
Charlene M. “Charlie” Esser, age 75, of Dubuque, IA, passed away peacefully at Harmony of Dubuque on January 19, 2026. To honor Charlene’s life, a private family service will be held at a later date. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Charlene’s family.
Charlene was born on November 19, 1950, to Pete and Pearl (Scholes) Driscoll in Dubuque, Iowa. On October 19, 1972, she married Ronald Esser. Together they raised two children and made their home in Potosi, Wisconsin, where Charlene became the heart of many lives.
Charlene was a natural-born caretaker. For many years, she ran an in-home daycare that became much more than a job—it became family. She loved her “kiddos” deeply, and they remained close to her throughout the years. Her gift for caring extended beyond her daycare; Charlene lovingly opened her home and her heart to those in need, including her father-in-law, Peter Esser, her mother, Pearl Driscoll, and her brother, LeRoy “Bubs” Driscoll during their illnesses. She ensured they received the very best care until their final days. Those years were filled with love, laughter, and a home that was always full of people and lasting memories. Charlene’s door—and heart—were always open to anyone who needed a place to belong.
In her younger years, Charlene enjoyed playing softball in a league in Tennyson, Wisconsin, and bowling with a wonderful group of friends on a ladies league at Sunset Lanes in Dickeyville, WI. When she wasn’t caring for children or family, she bartended at several local establishments—where, by many accounts, she was one of the best around. Everyone loved “Charlie.” She was known for her warmth, quick wit, and for never turning down a shot of Sambuca with a chaser of Pepsi. She also loved shopping, attending concerts, and spending time with her friends.
Charlene leaves behind her children, Ronda Kennedy and Dane Esser, both of Cassville, Wisconsin; her sister, Susan Driscoll of Tennessee; her grandchildren, Taylor Kennedy, Thomas Kennedy, Colin Esser, and Tyson Timmerman; and her great-grandchildren, Letti Jensen and Daxtyn Kennedy, with another great-grandchild, Briggs Kennedy, expected soon; and a special longtime friend, Mike Link of Dubuque, Ia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Pearl Driscoll; her brother, LeRoy “Bubs” Driscoll; her sister, Nancy (Del) Brecht; her daughter-in-law, Laura Esser; and her grandson, Dallas Esser.
I would like to send a VERY special thank you to Lois Denlinger, mom’s roommate at Harmony. I am so thankful to have had you throughout this last week going through this with my mom. Also, I would like to thank everyone at Harmony Care , so many of you were so good to my mom, especially Juilette. Thank you to Hospice of Dubuque as well for taking great care of Mom through this process. And finally, a heartfelt thank you to Sister Sharon Rezmer of Cathedral of St. Raphael for praying with mom all these years and being her friend.
Charlene will be remembered for her selfless heart, her unwavering care for others, and the love she gave so freely. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched and the family she held so close.
Dear lord, please guide my way along life’s road, it seems I trudge uphill. I pray that others know your love, that I may do your will. Please help me as I go about the task of daily livin’ and thank you for the many gifts that you’ve already given. By: Velma Link
