Thomas A. Flanagan

Thomas A. Flanagan, 57, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly, in his home on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

Friends and family may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Thomas was born on April 23, 1969, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of George W. and Mary Lou (Cornwell) Flanagan. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School class of 1988. On April 20, 2016, he was united in marriage to Stacy Jones in Dubuque. Tom worked at A-1 Crane Rental & Machinery, previously Walser Crane Service. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 234.

Tom was a loving father to both of his sons and his stepdaughters, and a playful, fun papa to all of his grandchildren. He was a tremendous role model to his sons and someone his family could always count on. Tom believed in giving tough love when it was needed, but everything he did came from a place of love and care for the people around him. He was truly a remarkable man who accomplished so much in his life, even though it was cut far too short.

He was also an incredible husband to his wife, Stacy. Together they spent countless hours working on their home, trying new things, and building a life they loved. They were truly made for each other. For many years, Tom was a man of few words, but after meeting Stacy, he opened up and became known for his humor, generosity, and personality. He could make anyone laugh and would give the shirt off his back without ever expecting anything in return.

Tom enjoyed fast cars, loud motorcycles, cold beers, and spending time with his little brother, Bob, at the dragstrip. He also loved going to garage sales to search for treasures that someone might need someday. Above all, Tom loved his family deeply. He was an amazing papa to his grandchildren, and he will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Tom is survived by his wife, Stacy; sons, Cory (Carissa Bishop) Flanagan and Matthew (Megan Hackman) Flanagan; stepdaughter Olivia (Kevin) Scheffert; 12 grandchildren, Braylee, Eli, Kale, Kora, Rayne, Zoey, Ellie, Tripp, Charlie, Murdoc, Mylo, and Lorelei; mother, Mary Lou Flanagan; brothers, Bob (Tina) Flanagan, Mike (Peggy) Flanagan, and George (Lisa) Flanagan; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, George; paternal grandparents, George and Enid Flangan; maternal grandparents, Alfred “Red” and Betty Cornwell; stepdaughter Brittany Gaylord; parents-in-law, James and Shirley Jones; and brother-in-law, Daniel Jones.

The family would like to thank the Dubuque Police Department, Dubuque Fire and Paramedics.

Blaine O. Bock

Blaine Owen Bock, 86, passed away on May 11, 2026, proving that even the toughest mechanic eventually runs out of road—though he made it a hell of a ride.

Born in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Mildred (Owen) and Wilmer Bock, Blaine grew up in rural Baldwin where he attended country school and learned that stubbornness, hard work, and the ability to fix anything with baling wire and determination would carry you through life. He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1957 and served his country in the Army Reserves.

Prior to purchasing Bock’s Texaco and Towing on East Platt Street in Maquoketa, Blaine worked at Small’s 66 and Dude’s 66 stations. But the best decision he ever made wasn’t buying a gas station—it was marrying the love of his life, Mary Anderson, on September 4, 1965.

In 1973, Blaine and Mary traded fuel pumps and tow trucks for farmland, purchasing a farm where they worked side by side for the next 40 years. When he semi-retired, he ran the farm on shares with a great family and opened West Side Repair, because apparently “retirement” to Blaine meant just working on his own terms.

Blaine was a proud member of the Farm Bureau, Jackson County Pork Producers, and the United Methodist Church. But his real pride and joy was being an original founding member of the Coronado Car Club, founded in 1959. The club’s 1953 Studebaker was the star of the show, and in his younger years, Blaine tore up the Cordova racetrack drag racing that beauty. He never lost his love for classic cars, good machinery, and anything with an engine he could tinker with.

An avid Iowa Hawkeye sports fan, Blaine’s love for the Black and Gold ran deep. He also supported local Maquoketa sports teams and was a familiar face in the stands. He passed that passion on to his daughters, teaching them not just to watch the game, but to truly love sports.

Blaine never met a stranger. Seriously—he’d strike up a conversation with a fence post if it stood still long enough. Whether you needed car advice, farming wisdom, or just someone to chew the fat with, Blaine was your guy. He had opinions, stories that got longer every time he told them, and a laugh that filled the room.

Blaine is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary; his daughter Marisa (Matt) Heefner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four grandchildren, Devon Foley of Boston, Massachusetts, Ryan Foley of Plymouth, Massachusetts, Jace Heefner and Jack Heefner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; son-in-law Kevin Foley of Plymouth, Massachusetts; sister Beverly Beachler of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sisters-in-law Marcia (Phil) Hardy of Decorah, Iowa, Madeline (Terry) Widel of Maquoketa, Iowa, Jean Anderson of Fort Madison, Iowa, and PK Anderson of North Liberty, Iowa; brothers-in-law Mark Anderson and Marvin Owen Anderson of Maquoketa, Iowa; 11 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilmer and Mildred Bock; in-laws Marvin and Helen Anderson; brother Larry Bock; sister Marlis Horgen; sister-in-law Fran Bock; brothers-in-law Ronald Anderson, Leroy Anderson, Philip Anderson, and Darryl Horgen; his beloved daughter Michele Foley; niece Hillary Lynch; nephew Steve Bock; and great-nephew Nolan Anderson.

A celebration of Blaine’s life will be held at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, May 23, 2026, at First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 P.M., Friday, May 22, 2026, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  A private family burial will be held at a later date at Buckhorn Cemetery, rural Maquoketa. In lieu of flowers, do something Blaine would approve of:  fix something that’s broken, help a neighbor, take a spin in a classic car, or just stop and talk to someone—he’d have wanted that.

Blaine lived life on his own terms, loved fiercely, worked hard, and never left anyone wondering where they stood with him. He’ll be missed by everyone who knew him—which, let’s be honest, was just about everybody.

Rest easy, Blaine. You earned it.

Matt grew up in East Dubuque. He went to St. Mary’s Catholic grade school and graduated from Wahlert High School in 1996. He continued his education at St. Ambrose University, in Davenport, where he earned a scholarship to run track and cross country. While at St. Ambrose, he enjoyed his time with his many teammates and friends and more importantly met Jill. He graduated in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Matt worked in accounting until his Myotonic Dystrophy led him into an early retirement. Matt then supported his wife’s dream of owning a preschool with unwavering love and support.

Matt loved all sports and most of his conversations revolved around his favorite teams and reciting key stats from seemingly every professional athlete. His favorite teams were the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, and Chicago Cubs. His love for baseball started at five years old when a special moment in his life was being able to play on his older brother Jason’s team that their dad coached. To honor Matt’s love of sports, the family welcomes you to wear your favorite team apparel or colors to the celebration of life on Friday.

Matt’s favorite thing to do was spend time with family. He always looked forward to cookouts, camping, golfing, and game nights. Game nights could get competitive in the Trannel household and he even taught himself euchre at a young age so that he could participate.

Matt loved to travel. His memorable trips included any beach destination, Disney World, Wisconsin Dells, fishing trips to Canada, and a trip out west with his parents and siblings that he never stopped sharing memories of. Katherine M. Schmitt

On May 10, 2026, Kathy passed away at the age of 76. She was reunited with her soulmate, Dan Schmitt, and her parents, Louis and Deloras Ruden.

Family is invited to gather at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd, on Thursday, May 14, at 1:00 p.m. A prayer service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with private entombment afterward at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends and family are all invited to celebrate Kathy’s life that evening from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Happy’s Place, 2323 Rockdale Rd.

Kathy grew up in Holy Cross with her six siblings on Main Street and attended Leo High School. She was resilient and bold, qualities that became especially clear when, at just 16 years old, she had her leg amputated after being diagnosed with bone cancer. After spending months in rehabilitation, Kathy returned to high school, continued forward with strength and determination, and later married Dan, in 1971.

Together, Kathy and Dan raised their four children on their farm in Rickardsville. Kathy worked as a Proofreader for over 20 years, and later as a Mutuel at the Dog Track.  She spent countless hours tending to her flower beds on the farm.  In the evening, she loved playing BINGO or watching Murder, She Wrote, while drinking RC Cola. In her later years, she enjoyed trips to the Dog Track to play Keno, watching NFL football, traveling to Branson, and getting together for Euchre tournaments.

But more than anything, Kathy loved her family. She loved being called GiGi by her great-grandchildren, a title she wore proudly.  She cherished time with her grandchildren, especially on Christmas Eve, when everyone came together for over nine hours to celebrate her favorite holiday. Family was the most important thing to Kathy, and to say she was proud of hers is an understatement.  Her expectations were high, and her opinion was never withheld, but her love and loyalty was always unconditional.

Kathy is survived by her four children: Jenny (Dave) Kettering, Sarah (Mark) Gigous, Josh (Jayna) Schmitt, and Callie (Ben) Bartels; her sixteen grandchildren, Stephen (Paula), Hailey (Trevor), Gabrielle (Tanner), Ben (Becca), Hunter (Tatum), Collin, Aleece, Casey, Leah, Boen, Hazel, Aubrey, Miles, Brecken, Dawson, and Delilah; and her five great-grandchildren, Millie, Mabel, Sylvie, Marnie, and Ellis.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a place that was very special to Kathy and one she generously supported in furtherance of children’s cancer research.

The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Ennoble Manor, Dr. Gina Moran, and Hospice of Dubuque, for their ongoing care of mom.

Supporting her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their 4-H projects, sports, and other activities and spending time with them were important to her and brought her much joy.  All of this was possible because of her life of faith.  Lavonne and Floyd were active members of St. John’s Catholic Church in Andrew for over 50 years and Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Springbrook in later years.
