Dale A. Nederhoff, age 94, of Galena, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Midwest Senior Care Community. To celebrate Dale’s life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, August 4, 2025, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 1199 Main Street, with Rev. Stephanie Schlimm officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.
Dale was born on a farm in central Iowa on September 15, 1930, to Albert C. and Katharina “Alice” (Neessen) Nederhoff. When he was four years old they moved to Wellsburg, Iowa. He spent the next 12 years attending public schools and soon after graduation, he started working at a local woodworking shop to learn to be a cabinetmaker.
In 1952, Dale was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years full-time- and eight years in the Reserves during the Korean War.
He then started college at Iowa State College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He married Shirley J. Huisman, also of Wellsburg, Iowa, on September 5, 1955. They lived in Ames, Iowa where soon after Dale’s graduation, their daughter, Lisa, was born.
His first job was with Stanley Consultants, an International Architectural Engineering firm located in Muscatine, Iowa. During the eight years he was with the firm, he started attending the University of Iowa on Saturdays and evenings and earned a Master of Science Degree. During this time, Dale was assigned to design projects in Bolivia, South America, Liberia and Nigeria, Africa and later in Venezuela, South America. It was while living in Muscatine that their two boys, Bradley and Brian, were born.
Then, Dale felt that he needed more Architectural experience so for the next nineteen years, his family lived in Dubuque, Iowa, where he was employed by The Durrant Group. It was during that time that he developed an Experience Record in Justice Architecture and specialized in that field for the rest of his career.
Because Justice Architecture was needed more in Florida, in 1984, their family moved to Tampa for the next 16 years. Dale was employed by the Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum (HOK), a large Architectural/Engineering firm.
This concluded his 42 years as a Registered Architect and Professional Engineer with 67 Justice Projects.
In 2000, both Shirley and Dale retired and started constructing their retirement home in Galena, Illinois. From 2001 through 2007, they lived 6 months in Galena and 6 months in Tampa, Florida per year.
Shirley died on January 3, 2007, in Tampa. It was in 2012 that Dale sold the condo and moved into his home in Galena full time.
Dale met his second wife, Betty Martin (whose husband, William Martin, died in 1999), at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. After dating for 4 years, they married on July 18, 2021.
Those left to cherish Dale’s memory include

Andy Upah officiating. Burial will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery. A livestream of the funeral mass will be on the funeral home Facebook page.
Olive was born on August 25, 1931, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Oliver “OJ” and Iris (Wilmot) Keller. She married Alois Wolter on December 7, 1951, in Dubuque, Iowa, and was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Alois; daughters, Terry (Ron) Sheedy, Tracey (Mark) Hueneke, Trudy (Jeff) Theisen, Tammy (Don) Zimmer; sons, Tim (Jill) Wolter and Toby (Nicole) Wolter; 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, five bonus grandchildren, and 10 great bonus grandchildren; siblings, Helen Gourley, John and Marilyn Keller; in-laws Joan Lester Keller, Harry (Sharon) Wolter, RuthAnn (Jerry) Burger, Barbara Jean Tuthill, Janet Wolter, Rosemary Wolter, Barb Wolter, Karen Wolter.
Olive was preceded in death by her son Thomas Wolter, her parents, her mother and father-in-law Harold and Barbara; siblings, Oliver “Wimpy” Keller, Dorothy (Mickey) Marty, Doris “Cookie” (Ron) Kuehn, Dolores “Toots” (Don) Jungblut, Ruth (Ed) Neyens, Peter (Carol) Keller); in-laws, Don Gourley, Rosemary (Earl) Fagen, Lavern Wolter, Loren Wolter, Duane Wolter, Denny Wolter and Tom Tuthill.
Buzzy Wolter had so many relatives and she loved the family she was born into, the one she married into, and the one she created and all the in-laws and added on people that make up the word “family”. She was a friend, an organizer, a leader, an active parishioner, and an all-around hardworking and loving person. She had so many skills that she used to the benefit of others. Through her example, she taught others to be loving, hardworking, and to share their skills. She was a woman of deep faith and a strong prayer life. The love she had for Al was ever present, even when she had some choice words for him. Buzzy could be feisty, they did tease and laugh, listen and respect, fight and make up; however, love was and is constant for them through all the joy and all the pain of life. It is all part of their great love story.
Buzzy graduated Immaculate Conception Academy. She asked Al to her Spring Prom her Junior year, because it was an all-girl school. He had finally worked his way into her heart; she was not an easy catch. She was preparing for a career in nursing before her marriage to Al. They lived in several homes from the small quarters at Al’s parents’ home, to the duplex at Alpine Street with the Marty’s (Buzzy sister) and then Duane’s (Al’s brother) family, to the farm, to the new home by St. Catherine’s. The homes are filled with memories: from making an ice-skating rink on the blacktop, to horse rides, to gardens, to sandbars, and the so many celebrations of holidays and birthdays.
There are several memories/skills that come to mind when reflecting upon and honoring the life of Buzzy Wolter. Grandchildren looked forward to the chocolate chip cookies, their own roll of cookies every Christmas. St. Catherines’ parish appreciated the pies and chili and numerous donations for parish events and Buzzy being in the Ladies Rosary Society. The Mosalem Busy Bees 4H Club knew her as a leader for years, teaching food and nutrition, sewing, and home improvement; plus, all the fair events and trips. Nieces and nephews have memories of her welcoming them to stay at the farm. Some will remember the farm as a refuge where Buzzy offered them warm meals and a bed. Of course, she was a great neighbor with the Trappistine Sisters and they were a blessing to her. FunNSun Resort in San Benito, Texas knew Buzzy for many roles. She was the chairperson for the Iowa potlucks. She played shuffleboard and wove baskets. Each night had cards or bingo or some program with friends because Buzzy and Al loved the people they met. Buzzy could be found almost every morning swimming laps in the pool and visiting afterwards.
Looking at her descendants, you see her many skills passed down from mother to children to grandchildren. Using just a needle, thread and scissors, Buzzy made the baptismal gown that was worn by all her children and many grandchildren. Luckily, she had a machine for making the family clothes and even wedding dresses. Sewing is skilled passed down; as is canning. Buzzy’s dill pickles (recipe from Joanne) must be homemade, is loved, and still being enjoyed. Many descendants are good cooks, including baking breads, pies, and of course, cookies. Reading good books is loved by many. Swimming, boating, and sandbars give our family connection to the memories of Massey Station with Buzzy’s parents and siblings. Buzzy could ride a disc and turn in a circle as she was pulled over the water and she floated in total relaxation. Many have her love of the water, and some, her skills.
Buzzy loved her family, friends, and community. She loved God and her faith and her husband. Her smile showed the joy in her heart. Working hard was part of her life, but so was camping and traveling and laughing and having great friendships. Buzzy was both blessed with a wonderful long life and a blessing to those who knew her. She was greatly loved by her children, their spouses, and all the grandchildren.
Our family is grateful for the many caring people who assisted our family in the care of our parents. Our hearts are full of appreciation for all who visited and brought gifts to their home. A special thank you is extended to Ryan, Virginia, and Tabrica, who spent many dedicated hours with Buzzy and Al. We thank Mills Valley Care Center and Jackson County Hospice for their dedication to the elderly and the comfort and care given to Buzzy in her final days.
Al Wolter is residing at Mills Valley Care Center, 1201 Park Street, Bellevue, IA 52031, should you care to send him a card of condolence. In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be given to the Saint Catherine Cemetery, or wishes of the family. Our hearts are grieving her and our faith believes she is resting in peace. May Buzzy remain in your heart and in your prayers.

She is also survived by her siblings, Helen (Bill) Hartman of Epworth and James (Carol) O’Meara of Des Moines; brother-in-law Clarence Brandenburg of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

Janet A. Durham
Janet Ann Durham, 87, of Davenport, formerly of Dubuque, died Friday, July 25, 2025, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 11:15 am Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.
The Funeral Service for Janet will be 11:30 am Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with Deacon Mike Ellis officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West at a later date.
Janet was born August 30, 1937, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Howard and Evelyn McCullough Smith. She served as valedictorian of her 1956 class at St. Joseph Academy and attended Clarke College. Her social concern for people led to a keen interest in civic and political affairs, from registering voters to precinct election official to appointment as Dubuque County Deputy Commissioner of Elections from 1977 – 1987.
She served on many Boards and Commissions for the City and County of Dubuque: Human Rights, Transit Board, Council Advisory Commission, and EEOC. She was also officer in non-governmental volunteer groups: Ecumenical Council, League of Women Voters, Fine Arts Society, Democratic Central Committee, BVM Alumnae Association, and board member to Dubuque’s first Friendship Force exchange trip-to Guatemala.
Janet was married to Robert L. Jones from 1957 to 1975 and later married Paul E. Durham on July 4, 1981. Following Paul’s 1987 transfer to Wilmington, NC, she served her new home area for 21 years as chair of the New Hanover County Library Board, president of Newcomers Club, and officer of League of Women Voters. She served elections as a precinct election official, chair of Early Voting precincts, Co-chair in 2004 of the first Democratic Presidential Preference Caucus of NHC, and treasurer of NC Democratic Women 2006 state convention.
Upon her return to this area, she rejoined many of the Dubuque groups, became board member of Friends of County Library, and of Village Cooperative of Asbury board of directors. In her final years, at the age of 84, Janet embraced one more adventure: moving to Davenport, Iowa, to be closer to her daughter Julie and family. She found joy in meeting new people, discovering new places, and-most of all-spending treasured time with her grandchildren and beloved great-grandchildren, Claire, Kate, and Graham, who lived just minutes away. Janet had the gift of conversation and an easy, natural way of putting people at ease. She was an enthusiastic lifelong learner who passed that love of curiosity and discovery on to her family. She delighted in simple pleasures-clouds, contrails, blue skies, and birds-and never lost her sense of wonder at the beauty of the world. Ever warm and welcoming, Janet had a ready smile for all. No one was a stranger for long. In her final wishes, she asked that some of her ashes be scattered, saying, “It would be so nice to have a few molecules of me drifting around this beautiful world.”
Survivors include two daughters, Julie (James) Hackbarth of Eldridge, IA, and Linda (Jeff) Booth of North Richland Hills, TX; three step-daughters, Linda (Terry) Bloome of Plainfield, IL, Susan (Philip) Paradiso of Dubuque, and Nancy (Terry) Fisher of Cedar Rapids, IA; 15 beloved grandchildren; and 16 cherished great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband Paul, she was preceded in death by her parents, and her step-son, James Durham.
Memorials have been established for Sisters of Charity and League of Women Voters of Dubuque.
