Sister Maria Oppreicht

Sister Maria Oppreicht, 91, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2022 at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, WI.

Marion Patricia (Mary Pat) was born December 24, 1930, the youngest of eight children born to Herman and Mayme (McNamara) Oppreicht. She was raised on the family farm near Lynxville, WI and attended Leitner and Shaw Hill Elementary, both one room schools.

Mary Pat completed her freshman year at Seneca High School, where she was chosen as the freshman representative on the Prom Court, and then enrolled at St. Clara Academy, Sinsinawa, WI, from which she graduated in June of 1948. After spending one year at Edgewood College in Madison, WI, she entered the Society of Dominican Sisters Order of Preachers. She made her profession in 1951 and took the name Sister Maria Goretti.

Sister taught elementary school in Sioux Falls, SD, Oklahoma City, OK, Winnetka, IL, East Dubuque, IL and Cuba City, WI.

In 1975, Sister Maria received her Master’s Degree from UW-Platteville and became a Guidance Counselor at Campion High School in Prairie du Chien, WI. Later, she became a member of the Parish Support Staff in Oklahoma.

In 1999, Sister returned to Wisconsin and became a Reiki Practioner in Madison, WI.

Sister Maria retired to the Motherhouse at Sinsinawa in 2010. She had been at the Villa since September 2021.

Sister Maria is survived by her Dominican Family.

She is also survived by her nieces and nephews who called her Aunt Packy. She so enjoyed the family 4th of July gatherings, the Crawford County Fair and the Christmas family celebrations where she often shared her famous homemade fudge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Edward, Eugene “Bud” (Elizabeth), John and Greg (Rilla) Oppreicht and three sisters, Helen (Sister Hermana), Monica (David) Deneen and Rita Oppriecht.

Marion Patricia, Mary Pat, Sister Maria Goretti, Sister Maria, Aunt Packy, which ever name you remember her by, she will be missed.  May she rest in Peace.

Funeral Services and burial were held at the Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, WI.

The Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth C. Goes

Ruth C. Goesse, 97, of Dubuque, was called home in the early morning on March 1st, 2022.

A memorial service will be at 6:00 p.m. on Friday March 4th, at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd with rev. Dianne Grace officiating; family and friends may gather after 3 p.m. until time of service.

Ruth was born on September 10th, 1924, in Dubuque, the daughter of Matthew & Mary (Schneider) Neyens. She married Joseph L. Goesse on June 30^th, 1951, at the Church of the Nativity in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on July 24th, 2005.

Ruth had a zest for life and never met a stranger. Her motto was “a body in motion, stays in motion” and she lived by those words right up to the end.

She touched many lives over the years and was known by many as the “HyVee sample lady”. She worked at various Hy-Vee stores in Dubuque, most recently HyVee Asbury plaza, until the age of 82.

Ruth is survived by her children, Joseph (Yvonne) Goesse of Davenport, Mary (Bob) Park of Dubuque, John (Mary) Goesse of Dubuque, and Diane Goesse-Kirk of Des Moines, IA. Her brother Bob Neyens of St. Charles, MO.  Her grandchildren Sarah Pier, Scott Horsfall, Shane Horsfall, Justin Park, Kimmy Mixdorf, Kelly Park, Shauna Tomlinson, Angie Marcov, Gina Goesse, Amy Reynolds, Megan Palen, Kevin Stender, Matthew Goesse, Tanya Goesse, Riley Kirk, Lexi Kirk, and 16 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Husband, Joseph; her son Jim Goesse; sisters Marian Walech and Jeanette Morrow; and her brothers David and Paul Neyens.

In Lieu of flowers a Ruth C. Goesse memorial fund has been established.

Mary F. Milligan

Mary F. (Hildebrand) Milligan, age 83, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m., on Monday, February 28, 2022, at Hawkeye Care Center.  To celebrate Mary’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. , on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where the parish scripture wake service will be held at 3:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, March 4, 2022, at St. Patrick’s Church, 1425 Iowa Street, with Rev. Martin Coolidge officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Mary was born on February 20, 1939, in Dyersville, Iowa, daughter of Albert and Mary (Miller) Hildebrand.

Mary was the 2nd oldest of 16 and attended school in Farley and Sherrill and helped to raise her 15 siblings.  She was united in marriage to Charles Larson on January 9, 1960.  They were blessed with 2 children before deciding to go their separate ways after 25 years together.  She would find love again later in life and married Glen Milligan on August 2, 1985, in Dubuque.  Sadly he passed away on May 7, 2018, after 32 years together.  Mary took meticulous care of her own home and put her talents to use helping others in their homes and businesses throughout Dubuque.  She was a very active member of her community. She was a long time member of St. Patrick’s Church, V.F.W. 508, RSVP, UAW Retirees and she distributed poppies for the American Legion Dubuque Unit 6. She also volunteered for several years at Mercy Hospital.  In her free time Mary loved to cook and bake, her boiled raisin cupcakes were legendary.  She also enjoyed crocheting and gave away her creations to family and friends for birthdays and Christmas every year.  She also loved dancing and listening to country music.  Mary was truly one of a kind.  She had a love for her family that was undeniable and everyone knew how important they were to her.  She will be greatly missed.

Richard J. Skrivseth

Richard J. “Ritch” Skrivseth, 78, of Preston, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:30 A.M., Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home.  Cremation will follow the services, and burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa, at a later date.

Richard Joe Skrivseth was born on May 20, 1943 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Henning “Bud” and Marian (Sagers) Skrivseth.  He was a 1961 graduate of Maquoketa High School and the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking.  He married Lori Hughes on September 16, 1977 in Maquoketa, Iowa.

“Ritch” had worked in the banking industry for 58 years, from 1962 to 2020.  Through those years he had worked for Jackson State Bank, Farmers Savings Bank and Clinton National Bank.  In retirement, he especially enjoyed “writing his own book” with short stories about his life.

“Ritch” was a former member of the Maquoketa Lions Club and Preston Lions Club, as well as the Preston Growth and Development committee.  His hobbies included horses, boating, golfing, going to casinos, and listening to music.  Additionally, he enjoyed cooking and was passionate about politics and Fox News.  He especially loved spending time with his family.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Lori Skrivseth of Preston, IA; children, Jill (Brent) Andresen of Preston, IA, Melissa (Dan) Schmidt of Bellevue, IA, Jon (Abby) Skrivseth of LeClaire, IA, Cody (Kelly) Skrivseth of Bellevue, IA, and Casey (Abbey) Skrivseth of Bellevue, IA; 15 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; a brother Terry (Bonnie) Skrivseth of Bellevue, IA; and sisters, Sharon Bullock of Des Moines, IA, Kathie (Chuck) Whitsell of Rio Rancho, NM, Carol (Rich) Kendall of Marion, IA, and Christy (Dean) Thomas of Grayslake, IL.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jeff Sanderfield

Jeff Sanderfield, 58, of Dubuque, died Sunday, February 27, 2022, at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center.

The Funeral Service for Jeff will be 2:00 pm Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Matt Collins officiating and Fire Honors rendered by Dubuque Fire Department Honor Guard and Dubuque Fire Pipe and Drums.

Following the service, a Celebration of Life will be held from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm Thursday, March 3, 2022 at Midtown Marina in East Dubuque.

Jeff was born December 27, 1963, in Clarinda, IA, the son of Marvin L. and Verna Darlene Moore Sanderfield. On July 14, 2000, he married Chris M. Conkel in Des Moines, IA.

He was a 1982 graduate of Newton High School.

He was a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Dubuque with 25 years of service.

He enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River with a Busch Light in hand, brewery tours, and playing cribbage. He loved being Papa to his grandchildren and was like a big kid himself.

Survivors include his wife, Chris; two daughters, Allie (Ryan) Johnson of Phoenix, AZ, and Amy (Mitchell) McClaskey of Dubuque; one stepson, Blake Wieser of Dubuque; seven grandchildren, Addy, Aubrey, Landon, Breylen, Max, Emmie, and Austin; his parents, Marvin and Verna Sanderfield of Montezuma, IA; two sisters, Debbie Farrow of Des Moines, IA, and Connie (Patrick) Ulysse of Murrysville, PA; two brothers, Gene (Aimee) Sanderfield of Lake Mary, FL, and Gary (Michelle) Sanderfield of Sydney, Australia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Gerry A. Smock

Gerry A. Smock, age 66, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at 9:27 p.m., on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital surrounded by her loving family.  To celebrate Gerry’s life, family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., on Friday, March 4, 2022, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday at Behr Funeral Home with Deacon John Stierman officiating.

Gerry was born on February 13, 1956, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Glen and Mattie (Green) Smock.

Gerry graduated from high school and then followed her passion for cosmetology and worked in her field for 20 years.  She followed that up by becoming a C.N.A. and worked for another 20 years at Stonehill Care Center.  Gerry loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing “Shanghai” with her sisters and nieces and reading books, which was another passion of hers.  She currently lived with her brother whom she loved very much.

James F. McInerney

James “Jim” F.  McInerney, 86, of Dubuque, IA passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2022, 3:50 a.m. at MercyOne Medical Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 3rd, 2022 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Fr. Martin Coolidge officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 2nd, 2022 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be at a later date in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Jim was born on November 29, 1935 in Dubuque, IA the son of Frank McInerney and Teresa (Kennicker) McInerney. He attended St. Patrick’s grade school and Dubuque Senior High School.

He married Marilyn Schmerbach on September 3, 1955 at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque.

He worked for the City of Dubuque, Parking Meter Division and then owned Jim’s Appliance Service until retirement. Jim and Marilyn, along with their son Denny, ran “the shop” on Central Ave., where it was as much an appliance store as a favorite neighborhood stop to socialize. The grandkids could always be found raiding Grandpa’s pop machine and sometimes being put to work cleaning appliances.  Stonehill Communities as an elevator operator after Marilyn’s death, continuing to help those who needed assistance to and from meals. He loved his “little job” at Stonehill and it gave him great joy to be so helpful.

Jim retired to care for Marilyn, who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis, caring for her until her death in 2005. Upon her passing, Jim resided with his daughter Sue and son-in-law Jeff, along with his favorite roommate Murphy.

He is survived by his children: Sue (Jeff) Ransom, Dennis (Cindy) McInerney, Sharon (Jim) Koch.  He also had 10 grandchildren, Amy (Brian) Ehlers and Brian (Megan) Ransom, Patrick (Abby), Michael, Kelly (Jake) Smith and Daniel (Ali) McInerney, Alicia (Brandon) Dixon, Jacob (Klaudia) and Nathan (Michaela) Koch, and Tanner (Kodi) McInerney, and 11 great grandchildren. His sister Vivan Buelow; sisters and brothers-in-law, Roberta Schmerbach, Ray and Mary Jane Schmerbach, Anne McClain, Rose and John Mitchell, Dave and Penny Schmerbach, Sally Schmerbach and Mary Walter.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn McInerney, son John McInerney, parents Frank & Teresa McInerney, and sister Ruth Carney.

The family wishes to thank MercyOne Emergency Room Department, ICU and 3 West staff and Dr. Brian Sullivan. A special thanks to his nephew Tommy Buelow for always being there for him.

Carl J. Haupert

Carl Joseph Haupert died peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of February 23, 2022. In a sign of the times, his family was gathered around him both in person, and virtually.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:15 am Tuesday, March 1, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am.  Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery where military rites will be accorded.

He was born in Dubuque on September 29, 1933 to Clarence and Crystal Haupert, and resided in Dubuque his entire life. He married Marianne Bray on July 10, 1960. Together they raised seven children, to whom they served as role models on how to live and love through good times and bad, with care and dignity.

After graduating from St. Joseph Academy in 1952, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. After completing his service, he earned his BA and MA degrees from Loras College. He then embarked on a 32-year career at Washington Junior High School, where he taught math and science. He and Marianne spent his retirement years traveling to visit their children and grandchildren and enjoying the restful atmosphere at their beloved summer cabin on the lake.

He enjoyed woodworking, reading, the daily crossword puzzle, relaxing at the lake cabin with family and friends, and outdoor activities ranging from walks with Marianne to yardwork and snow-blowing the sidewalk along the entire length of the street. He was a long-time member of St. Joseph the Workman parish, serving a variety of volunteer roles over the years until illness forced him to the sidelines. He was a kind and gentle man, devoted to his family, which was especially apparent in the final year of his life, as they continued to visit and enjoy his company, though he was no longer able to communicate with them.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne, brother Frank, sister Angie Wemmer, sister-in-law Elizabeth Bray, children Mike (Mary Ellen), Amy (Mark) Oles, Lisa (Rick) Lewis, Jenny, Ann (Nestor) Schnasse, David, numerous nieces and nephews, and 17 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jean, and his youngest son Paul.

The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sheila D. Orcutt

Shelia D. Orcutt, 70, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at MercyOne Medical Center.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd., Dubuque, where a Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. Rev. Dianne Grace will officiate. Condolences may be shared at www.egelhofsiegertcasper.com .

Shelia was born to Edward and Pauline (Bryant) Williams, raised in Anniston, Alabama, and was the third youngest child out of nine. She was passionate and very protective of her family, and had so many friends. her personality was like no other, and she loved to entertain. Shelia was definitely a talker. She spent many years as a dance instructor, and enjoyed music. During her lifetime, she owned her own flooring gallery, and spent many years in management. In 1976, Shelia married the love of her life. Together they raised their three children. Nothing meant more to her than her family. Eventually, she became a Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. She wasn’t your typical Mother or Grandmother by any means. One of her favorite things to do was camping. She and Timothy took several trips camping. One of the family camping spots was Backbone State Park. She also loved going to Alabama to see her family. Most of all, Shelia lived for time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed astrology and studying crystals. She loved dragonflies. Shelia was a Denver Broncos fan, and of course a Crimson Tide fan. Shelia loved watching her husband play ball, and they participated in Dragon Boat races for many years. She always enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in recitals, sports , and other events. She was a very proud Wife, Mother, and Nana. Shelia was always loving and caring. She touched so many people’s hearts, and was never judgmental. Shelia was always easy to talk to, and would always be there to listen. She had a way of always putting everyone and everything before herself.

Shelia is survived by her husband of 45 years, Timothy Orcutt of East Dubuque; her daughter Melanie (Sederick) Orcutt-Green of Louisiana, and their children: Cody, Megan, Nathan, and Dionell; her son Christopher (Keriann Kane) Orcutt of Dubuque, and their children: Elizabeth, Ethan, and Liam (mother Angie Orcutt); her son Justin (Ashley) Orcutt of Colorado, and their children: Avelon, Jubilee, and Osiris; six great grandchildren; her siblings, Gwen (Richard) Bennett, Herschal (Martha) Williams, Peggy (Jimmy) Ledbetter, Brenda (Rick) Parris, Donnie (Frankie) Williams, and Debbie Williams; her sister-in-law, Bonnie Clark; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law, Donald and Dorothy Orcutt; her brother, James (Peggy) Williams; her sister, Sue (Billy Ray) Paris; and five nieces and nephews.

William L. Phillips Sr.

William “Bill” L. Phillips Sr., 84, of Asbury, passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at home, surrounded by the love of his family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 26, at the Church of the Nativity with Fr. Andy Upah officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, February 25, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd., Dubuque, where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Bill was born on September 29, 1937 to Virgil “Bud” and Dorothy (Mengis) Phillips. He attended Dubuque Senior High School and was a proud graduate of the class of 1956. He married Norma Leytem on November 28, 1957 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Bill was a supervisor at the Dubuque Pack for 38 years until health issues forced him into an early retirement. He was a man of faith. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, God and country. He was well known for his keen sense of humor.

Bill loved camping and spending time outdoors, He was a member of the Dubuqueland Campers. He was also a regular at the local Donut Boy and enjoyed catching up with friends. He was a loyal IA Hawkeye fan. Go Hawks! Bill and Norma spent 21 years wintering at their Texas home. They were blessed with a great group of friends from all over.

Bill is survived by his wife, Norma, his children; William (Linda) Phillips Jr., of East Dubuque, and their children, Kelli Jo Becker, Kathryn “Katie” (Andy Johnson) Phillips and their daughter Avery, Kevin (Kelly) Phillips and their children Addyson, Austin, and Alivia; Robyn (Terry) Hudson of Dubuque, and their children, Nikole (R.J. Fisher) Eudaley, Brenna Hudson, Kamron (Jami) Hudson and their children Kaleb Hudson and MaKenna (Brandon) Sandvik; Brenda (Tom Behnke) Ries of Durango, and her children, Paisley (Aaron) Herbst and their children Jackson, Nolan, and baby Herbst arriving soon, Elizabeth (Ross) Dolphin and their children, Mila and Wells Dolphin. Bill is also survived by his siblings; Wayne (Sandy) Phillips of TX, and Jim (Meredith) Phillips of WA. In-laws; Betti Engler, Peggy (Gary) Bicker, Pat (Charles) Keys, Dennis Leytem, Christine Grogan, Norma Leytem, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, sister; Janice Clark, special son-in-law; Scott Ries, In-laws; Arnold, Elmeta, Butch, Bob, and Vince Leytem, Mary Lou Shappell, Dan Clark and Gene Engler.

The family wishes to thank Drs Viner, Kumor and T. Martin along with all the medical personnel who helped Bill these last 30 years.

Susan S. Hahlen

Susan Stella Hahlen, 63, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at home with her husband by her side.

A prayer service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, February 28, 2022 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory followed by visitation until 8:00 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Susan will be 10:30 am Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at Holy Spirit Parish – Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Steven Garner as the Celebrant. Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. The mass will be live streamed on Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home’s Facebook page and will also be available to view later at www.hskfhcares.com.

Sue was born July 14, 1958, in Dubuque, the daughter of Vincent “Jake” and Alma “Amy” Louise (Torrey) Smith. On May 7, 1977, she married Rickey “Rick” Carl Hahlen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque.

She served on the school board for St. Mary’s/St. Patrick’s for six years and on the St. Mary’s Parish Council for six years.  Sue most recently served on the Parish Council for Holy Spirit Parish. She was a girl scout leader and a troop organizer.  Sue organized the Salvation Army bell ringing for DuTrac Community Credit Union for 17 years. She was employed as a lead teller for DuTrac Community Credit Union for 28 1/2 years until her retirement on March 5, 2019.  Sue was currently serving as the secretary for UAW Local 94 retirees.  

She enjoyed traveling, driving her convertible VW Bug, playing various board games and cards, cooking, over decorating for every holiday. Her greatest passion was spending time with Rick, her children, family, friends and being the best Bugga to her grandchildren.  Sue was very social and loved having conversations wherever she went.  She was always there for friends and family in their hard times.

Survivors include her husband, Rick of Dubuque; her children, Brad (Melissa) Hahlen of Farley, Brenda Hahlen of Dubuque and Brett (Kelsey Lass) Hahlen of Dubuque; seven grandchildren, Zach (Sam), Abbie, Collin, Paige, Molly, Arthur and Stella and two cousins that were like siblings to her, Pam Butcher and Richard Kieffer.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her in-laws, Arthur and Jeanette Hahlen.

Jennifer L. Bernard

Jennifer Lyn Bernard, age 43, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at 10:42 p.m., on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at MercyOne Dubuque.  To celebrate Jennifer’s life there will be a memorial held at Hills and Dales, 1011 Davis Street, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022.  There also be a memorial held in Keokuk, Iowa this summer on June 4 with the time to be announced later.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.

Jennifer was born on May 22, 1978, in Ft. Madison, Iowa, daughter of Theodore G. Jr. and Lynelle (Siegrist) Bernard.

Jennifer graduated from high school and worked at the Lifetime Community Center.  She was a sweet and gentle soul who enjoyed being read to, listening to music and going for walks.  Jennifer will be deeply missed by her family, friends and caregivers at Hills and Dales.

Ronald J. Kuhl

Ronald J. “Ron” Kuhl, age 79, of Dubuque, passed away at 12:00 noon, on Monday, February 21, 2022, at MercyOne Dubuque.  To celebrate Ron’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, at Holy Ghost Church, with Rev. Steven M. Garner officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.

Ron was born on July 24, 1942, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Irenus and Edna (Simon) Kuhl.

Ron was a committed son, big brother, fun uncle, and a Godfather many times over. Ron never married but he lived a full life with family, friends and sports activities. His kindness and commitment were in full display as he took exceptional care of his mom and dad in their later years of life. After they passed, he gave special care to three uncles, an aunt, and a family friend. As a big brother, he looked after his two sisters and brother. Just being there for his siblings meant a sense of security and a loving touch. As an uncle he was fun be cause he said and did things that their parents would not have thought of. When he became the favorite person to be a Godfather his commitment was serious and sincere. But Ron also loved sports. Professional baseball, college football and college basketball were his favorites even though he watched other sports when his favorites were not available. Everyone who knew Ron knew he was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He was a football and basketball season ticket holder for decades and made his presence known in the stands with all his Hawkeye gear. If you were new to an Iowa game with Ron, he made a point to show you his brick from his Iowa donations. But being charitable was not limited to Iowa Hawkeyes – if you asked Ron he probably would contribute. A commitment to career was also important to Ron. After graduating from Wahlert High School in 1961, he worked various jobs before serving as a radio operator in the U.S. Army at a Stuttgart, Germany army base. After discharge, he moved to Hollywood, California and earned his first-class FCC license through Don Martin School of Broadcasting. He retained this license throughout his life. While going to broadcasting school, he worked as a souvenir salesman at Dodger stadium and as an usher at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. After a brief career as a technician at a small Wisconsin TV station, he decided to go back to school and earn an associate degree in business. While going to business school in Milwaukee he worked as a security guard. After all these experiences he decided to move back to Dubuque and take a job at John Deere as a security guard. His duties also included being a first responder and a fireman. This job was his favorite. He became his union’s treasurer and remained in this post even after retirement. His visits to the union national conventions were highlights of his career. Retirement for Ron meant going to every family function possible, going to every Iowa football game and basketball game possible, listening to and watching every sporting event on radio/TV that caught his interest and volunteering to read the Telegraph Herald on a radio station for the legally blind. Ron also enjoyed visiting with his neighbors and talking to his numerous friends around town. Weekly discussions about sports with specific friends was a happy time for Ron and boy did he know his stuff! He was seen many times around the local casinos, talking to people and doing some gambling. His last two years found him with health problems that he took in stride and reminded everyone that it is important to take one day at a time.
Ron, you will be remembered by your friends and relatives one day at a time.

Maurine E. Stanton

Maurine E. Stanton, 85, of Lost Nation, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday morning, February 22, 2022, at Maquoketa Care Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A private family graveside service and burial will be held at a later date at Buckhorn Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.  Cremation rites have been accorded.

Maurine Elaine Bock was born on February 15, 1937 in Baldwin, Iowa, to Harvey C. and Elsie C. (Gronwoldt) Bock.  She was a 1954 graduate of Maquoketa High School.  She married Richard Stanton on November 3, 1956 in Lost Nation, Iowa.  They later divorced.

Maurine had first worked at the Lost Nation COOP as a secretary for several years.  She then owned and operated Stanton Trucking, hauling livestock and freight across the United States until 1985 when a fire destroyed her business.  Being the independent woman she was, she took a job working at WADY’s and later with MC Industries, both in Maquoketa.  Lastly, she became a caregiver for her mother.

Maurine could create anything and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and knitting.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Deborah (Roger) Taylor of Baldwin, IA, and Kenneth (Carrie) Stanton of Scotch Grove, IA; a son-in-law, Kenny Derganz of Maquoketa, IA; 10 grandchildren, Trent (Lisa), Evelyn (Matt), Dana (Duane), Brooke (Travis), Brandi (Steven), Kendra (Paul), Cortney (Joe), Lynsey (Kyle), Dustin (Tabatha) and Aggie; 18 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren (and one on the way).  She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Linda Derganz, a brother Neil Bock, sister Nancy Rockwell, and a great-great-grandchild.

Jeffrey L. Hansen

Jeffrey Lee Hansen, 68, died at his home in Maquoketa, Iowa, on February 18, 2022.  He was born on July 13, 1953, in Maquoketa to Edward and Arlene (Paarmann) Hansen. He graduated from Delwood High School and worked for Farmers Supply in Delmar and helped on the family farm.  He married Peggy Nelson on April 22, 1978.

He enjoyed enjoyed being outdoors and going to the casinos weekly till covid started.  Later in life his passion was mowing lawns with his favorite John Deere lawn tractor.

Jeffrey was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Doug Hansen, father-in-law Ronald Nelson, and a brother-in-law Patrick Nelson. He is survived by his wife Peggy and son Kevin of Maquoketa; a sister Colleen (Ray) Scott of Wisconsin; sister-in-law Tina Hansen of Maquoketa; mother-in-law Kay Nelson of Dubuque; brother-in-law Ken (Lori) Nelson of Dubuque; sister-in-law Rita (Doug) Kandel of Lake Forest, California; many nieces and nephews; and 1 God child Lexi Kandel (who he adored) of Lake Forest, California.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Judes Hospital.

A private celebration of his life will be held at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Burial will be at the Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.
