Leland H. “Buck” Runde, 92, of Kieler, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, April 24, 2021, at Epione Pavilion, Cuba City, Wisconsin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 3, 2021 at Immaculate Conception Church, Kieler, Wisconsin, with Rev. Bernard Rott officiating. Services will be live streamed through Facebook on the funeral home page. Burial will be at a later date. A public visitation for friends will be held from 2-5:00 p.m. Sunday at Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cuba City, Wisconsin, where there will be a Scripture Wake Service at 5:00 p.m. Friends may also call Monday at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center from 9-10:15 a.m. The family requests you utilize masks during the duration of your visit at the funeral home, parish center and in the church and that you practice social distancing.
Buck was born on March 28, 1929, in Happy Corners, Wisconsin, the son of Clarence and Orpha (Gunderman) Runde. He married the love of his life, Sara “Sally” Kerkenbush on April 18, 1953 at St. Andrew’s Church in Tennyson. She preceded him in death on October 26, 2019.
A short stroll from the family farm, Buck earned his first “paycheck” at age 16 at the cheese factory in Happy Corners. Two years later, he received an opportunity to begin his career with John Deere. In 1951, Buck was called to serve in the United States Army in both Japan and Korea. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to John Deere until his retirement in 1984 with 37 years of service, many as a supervisor in “I” Building.
Buck and Sally dedicated their life to raising their 7 children, giving back to their community/parish, and enjoying the great outdoors. Buck’s children quickly learned his philosophy, “Ya don’t work, Ya don’t eat” teaching them the importance of hard work, perseverance, and faith in God. Runde Family reunions, birthday mulligans, and weekly “Rundevoos” brought him great joy, as it meant time well spent with family and friends.
Buck was a charter member and treasurer of the Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. He also was a charter member of the Kieler Athletic Club. As an active volunteer at Immaculate Conception Parish, he served as President of the Holy Name Society and President of Parish Council. He enjoyed serving on the Boy Scout Troup Committee and Cub Scout Pack Committee.
His garden was the envy of the neighborhood, keeping his 7 children and grandchildren well fed. He always looked forward to his weekly poker games and you would often find Buck cheering on one of his favorite Wisconsin sports teams. Buck and Sally loved their trips as members of the Kieler Moonshiners’ Snowmobile Club and were fortunate to enjoy years of retirement traveling to visit family and friends throughout the U.S.
In 1988, he purchased “Buck’s Landing” tree farm which has become the location of many family gatherings. He and his sons, together with many friends and family, built a one room log cabin on the property with logs from the farm. This cabin has become a labor of love and source of constant enjoyment. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have loving memories of Gator rides, fishing, deer hunting, cook-outs, and morel hunting with Grandpa Buck. His loving influence will live on for generations to come at Buck’s Landing.
Survivors include his children, Sharon (Brad) Avery, Topeka, KS, Peggy (Jon) Weston, Philadelphia, PA, Deb (Bryant) Holt, Franklin, VA, Chuck (Sharon) Runde, Kieler, WI, Barb (Cameron Tschannen) Runde, Lindstrom, MN, Sam (Kim) Runde, Kieler, WI and Andy (Sue) Runde, Shorewood, IL; a brother, Gus (Shirley) Runde, Kieler, WI; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Kieler and Tina Runde; 15 grandchildren, Wyatt (Christina), Lara, and Dylan Avery, Jason (Shante), Aaron (Charrity), and Brian (Alyson) Weston, Bud & Will (Meredith) Holt, Burt (Lesley) and Audra (Nick) Runde, Joe (Bri), Nick (Melissa), Jessica and Jamie Runde, and Maggie Runde; and eighteen great-grandchildren.

Milton E. Weber
Milton E. Weber, 86, of La Motte, Iowa, completed his earthly journey at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, April 23, 2021 at 10:17 a.m. He fought a fierce and courageous battle with colon cancer since November 2015.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Wednesday, April 28th from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the scripture wake service at 2:30 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 29th at St. Donatus Catholic Church, St. Donatus, Iowa with Father David Ambrosy officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors accorded by the Bellevue American Legion Post #273 and the Iowa Army National Guard. Please remember to wear your mask and if you are unable to attend a live stream of the funeral mass will be on the funeral home Facebook page.
Milton was born the youngest child of Nicholas and Margaret (Capesius) Weber on September 18, 1934. He was born, raised, and died on the family farm which he owned with his soul mate and wife, Luann. Milt married his sweetheart Luann Denlinger on April 27, 1957 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Key West, Iowa. For a few days shy of 64 years, they raised their family and always worked together as a team.
Milton attended St. Donatus Catholic School and then proudly served in the United States Army. He was stationed at Camp Darby in Italy as a supply clerk. After his discharge from the Army, he served in the United States Army Reserves until 1963.
The family farm was Milton’s pride and joy. Milton and Luann provided for their family by milking cows, raising cattle, hogs, and planting and harvesting crops. In 2008, the entire family traveled to Des Moines to be awarded a Century Farm Designation by the Iowa Department of Agriculture. After they semi-retired from farming, Milton worked for ten years alongside Luann at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. There they made many life-long friends.
Even though he was busy with the farm, Milton found time to volunteer his time and talents. He was a leader for the Mosalem Challengers 4-H club and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 4236 and the American Legion Post 273. He served on St. Donatus Catholic Church parish council and was a member of the Holy Name Society.
Milton, a man of deep faith in God, was soft-spoken, gentle, and had a quick wit. He was a great thinker and listener. His heart was full of love for life, especially his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted family man and friend to so many people and was often described as the most soft-hearted and caring person. He passed on his love for animals and sweet treats, especially chocolate, to his family.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Luann, and their children: Jeanne (Mike) Woodyard of Dubuque, Dale (Dianne Fischer) Weber of La Motte, Sue Ellen (John) Nolan of Peosta, Mark (Sarah Gansemer) Weber of Dubuque, and Lynn (Nina Trickel) Weber of Dubuque. Also surviving are his granddaughters Ellen Nolan of Peosta, Emily (Scott and Carter Janiszeski) Nolan of Bernard, Katie (Lavern) Yoder of Zwingle and his grandsons Dustin Weber of La Motte, Dylan (Brianna and Ellyse Martin) of Dubuque, Nicholas, Jared, Mitchell and Seth Weber all of Dubuque, Colyn Weber of Dubuque, and Brian Woodyard of Des Moines, Iowa. Also surviving are his brothers Lester Weber of Dubuque and Marvin (Ardella) Weber of Bellevue, his sisters-in-law Marilyn Bergfeld and Gladys Wernimont of Dubuque and brothers-in-law John Denlinger of Dubuque, Clair Denlinger of Balltown and Gilbert (Gib) Clemen of Holy Cross and many nieces and nephews.
Milton was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Margaret (Capesius) Weber, his sister Dolores (Lawrence) Maro, brothers Ray (Mary) Weber, Neil (Rose) Weber, Vernon (Lorraine) Weber, sister-in-law Ruth (Lester) Weber and 3 younger siblings who died in childhood. Also preceding him in death were his mother-and-father-in-law Carlyn and Marie Denlinger, brothers-in-law Ralph (Marilyn) Bergfeld and Charles (Gladys) Wernimont, sisters-in-law Carol (Gib) Clemen, and Ruth (John) Denlinger as well as several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a Milton E. Weber memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Eric Engelman and the staff at MercyOne Cancer Center and to Hospice of Jackson County, especially Bonnie and Samantha for their loving and caring treatment of Dad throughout his cancer journey. We also would like to thank Milt’s caregivers Julia, Lisa and Char for the compassion and kindness shown to him, Judy Herrig for bringing the Holy Eucharist on a weekly basis, and to Father Dave Ambrosy and Deacon Loras Weber for loving spiritual guidance during this difficult time.
John Raaz
Known as a master at playing every hand he was dealt with a positive smile, humor and courage, John Raaz lived for 13 years with metastatic prostate cancer, until his death on April 24, 2021, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was 73 years old.
It was clear from listening to John’s family and friends, those qualities and more defined him throughout his life. Always gracious and accommodating, John was trusted, competitive, quick-witted, an unapologetic Democrat, and a realist.
Born December 25, 1947, in Jefferson, Iowa, John was the second child of four, in the family of Virgil and Cecelia (Cuddy) Raaz. His Christmas birthday gave his mother hope for a priest in the family. But that was not to be. John married Nicki Haupert in college, an amazing love story we’ll get back to. They have a son, Johnny, who has flourished in the glow of their love his entire life.
John was close to his siblings. His sister Jan feels so lucky to have a brother who’s also a special friend. According to brother Jeff, John could push your buttons and have your back, all at the same time. Youngest brother Jerry found John to be a good sport with a rare gift: he was the first to laugh at himself, always able to lighten the moment, and never took himself too seriously.
John’s nieces and nephews spoke lovingly of the impact John had on them. One said it created a visible buzz in the house when word got out that John and Nicki were coming to any gathering. Another said being with John was a “joyful space” in his life.
His mother Cecelia’s Irish Catholic “Cuddy Clan” included John’s 22 first cousins. John loved the large family, claiming many of his cousins’ kids as his own nieces and nephews, and never passing on a photo-op with those in the younger generation.
One cousin, who lived with John’s family in high school, became an “older brother” to John, a relationship that continued throughout their lives. In retirement they even lived together again, wintering with their wives in Tucson for many years.
Classmates remember John as president of his Jefferson (Iowa) High School senior class, and a gifted quarterback demonstrating solid leadership, confidence, and resilience. He was an All-Conference quarterback in high school, and at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
John loved a good story — so let’s tell some.
John’s Coe College teammate, and the receiving end of the “Raaz Rapid Transit” passing game (as coined by a local sportswriter) shared an out-of-character story. One of the Coe coaches told John he was “un-coachable.” Are we talking about the same guy? His receiver explained this was because the two of them often changed plays in the huddle, and those plays usually worked.
In retirement, John considered golf his fulltime job, heading out each morning to one of the Eagle Ridge courses. His Legacy golf group and other golf buddies laughed as they recalled John was always recognizable in his bright orange golf attire. John spoke of these rounds with the guys, and a beer after, as “the best of times.”
John’s good friends included men and women alike. One friend calls John her bourbon coach, introducing her to Templeton Rye, inspired by the 1920’s moonshine from Templeton, Iowa, and her husband called John the smartest guy in any room and was delighted when John joined him on the Volunteer Fire Department in The Galena Territory. John’s winter sport was pickleball and he enjoyed playing with everyone. While known to be competitive and sometimes aggressive, one gal told Nicki, “John always plays fair.”
Many people, when talking about John, recalled his sense of humor and an Irish grin barely hiding his mischievous next move. When John started a group laughing at the window table in his favorite restaurant, Fried Green Tomatoes, the entire crowd joined in without even knowing the punch line.
Couple friends who traveled coast to coast with John and Nicki learned John was always up for an adventure. Together they tackled Dove Mountain Golf Course in Tucson. The golf course won that day. They survived a harrowing boat ride across Lake Michigan, and the guys were even game for performing on Broadway in NYC. About that, they had been profiled by a street troubadour group, joined the performance, then had to pay to get out of it or go with it. They paid.
John’s character was no doubt shaped by both his father, who was known by his nickname, Kib, and his mother Cecelia (Cel). After John’s freshman high school football season, he mentioned to Dad he was ready for basketball. Kib said, “Did you make the honor roll this semester?” John said, “Just missed it.” Kib informed his oldest son that he’d be skipping basketball this year to study. John thought he was kidding, as Kib loved all sports. Kib wasn’t.
John’s mother Cel taught by example. Being humble and gracious, lending a helping hand to those in need, owning your mistakes, treating people with dignity and respect, finding the good in people and embracing his spirituality were all lessons from his mother that served John well, in both his personal and professional life. John once said, “I never realized how poor we were, because I got what I needed most from my parents.”
Son Johnny and his dad had an indescribable relationship that inspired all. John and Johnny communicated their love and affection in a special way that included a lot of teasing of each other. Once, John was headed into Chicago traffic, with Johnny riding shotgun as he liked to do, and John was cut off by another driver. He exchanged a couple looks with Johnny, while white knuckling it. Finally, Johnny broke the tension, supporting his dad with the comment, “Dumb Shit!”
Nicki met John when both were serving on the Junior High Student Council. When asked what she saw in a guy at age 13 that would last for 60 years, she said she was attracted by three things. First, he was smart and on the honor roll. And he was athletic. It was fun watching him play all the sports. But most importantly, Nicki saw that he was nice to everyone, and everyone liked him. John’s way of looking at the world with humor, grace and kindness was a big part of the joy of their life together.
Those qualities remained a big part of who John was, according to Nicki. He was successful in his career, and a strong advocate for his son, serving on several boards related to disability services. Through his participation in volunteer activities and sports, John got to know a lot of folks he wouldn’t otherwise have met. John spent 33 years with the Chicago NW Railroad, and the Union Pacific Railroad, living in several different locations in the Midwest. His career in labor relations was important to him, but what John valued most were the friendships with some of his work colleagues that continued long after retirement.
Spiritual but not religious, John loved a good bourbon, and genuinely enjoyed people, hosting an annual Christmas/birthday bash for 30+ years. He had an eclectic taste in music and recommends we all check out Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and the cover of “The Sound of Silence” by the band Disturbed. Enough said.
Near the end of his life John received a letter from a friend. It read, in part, “They say that the mark of an individual is the way they are talked about when they are not present. Any time I have heard the name John Raaz, 100% of the time it has been with respect, admiration and laughter…I am better for knowing you.”
John is survived by his wife, Nicole (Haupert) Raaz, of Galena, IL, and their son, Johnny of Cedar Rapids, IA; his siblings, Janice Raaz Ryan, Council Bluffs, IA; Jeff Raaz and his wife Susan, St Louis, MO; Jerry Raaz and his wife Julie, Fort Collins, CO; sister-in-law Pam Peterson, Chesterfield, MO; 11 nieces and nephews: Megan Ryan (Dave) Hawk, Brendan (Corrie) Ryan, Erin Ryan (Sean) Talcott, Josh (Amy) Raaz, Jeremy (Jessie) Raaz, Nathan Raaz, Collin (Caitlin) Raaz, Dillon Raaz, Laurie Peterson O’Leary, Jennifer Peterson (Hays) Arter, and Michele Peterson.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil, and Cecelia (Cuddy) Raaz, father and mother-in-law, Jack and Opal (Lindhart) Haupert, and his brothers-in-law, Jack Ryan and Gary Peterson.
The family will gather for a private remembrance. And since John always loved a party, there will be a Celebration of Life at Fried Green Tomatoes in Galena at a time to be determined later. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family. Donations can be made to the Richard Peterson EMT Fund at the Galena Territory Foundation, 2000 Territory Drive, Galena, IL 61036, and to Discovery Living, Inc., 1015 Old Marion Road NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.
John’s request to us: “After the pain of loss, let’s elevate our human interaction, our sense of humor and our innate goodness.”
John’s family would like to thank his physicians and staff at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, at Northwestern Medicine Cancer Center in DeKalb, IL, Iowa City Hospice in Iowa City, IA, Dan Ciha, Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, IA, and Tom Furlong and the staff at Furlong’s Funeral Home in Galena, IL, for their care for John and assistance to the family.

Nolan S. Hollaway
Nolan Scott Hollaway, age 13, of Guttenberg, Iowa, completed his earthly journey on April 19, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, in the loving arms of his mother. To honor Nolan’s life, a private family service is being held at a later date. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Nolan’s family.
Nolan arrived in this world on December 19, 2007, in Guttenberg, Iowa, the beautiful son of Scott and Susan (Anderson) Hollaway. None of us were prepared for the challenges and blessings which would lie ahead, but we are forever grateful for each and every one of them. Nolan virtually attended Clayton Ridge Middle School in Guttenberg. People seemed drawn to Nolan by his magnetic personality. He seemed to touch everyone he met. Nolan loved his family, friends, dogs, and camping in his big, big camper. It’s impossible to put into words the true essence of love which Nolan possessed, but we know now that the world will definitely be a little darker without him. Thank you, Nolan, for teaching us all what the truly valuable things in this life really are and may the Lord keep you at peace in His loving arms until we join you again one day. God Bless You Nolan!
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Nolan include,
his loving parents,
Scott (Susan) Hollaway, Guttenberg, Iowa;

and Richard “Pop” (Sharon “Mimi”) Anderson, Port Charlotte, Florida;

his devoted friends and caregivers,
Aunt Erin and Uncle B (Brian) Hall, Monticello, Iowa;
along with numerous extended family, friends, neighbors, and caregivers.
