Francis C. Oglesby

Frank was born on July 3, 1942, in Dubuque, Iowa, a son to Clarence and Catherine (Huber) Oglesby. Frank spent his entire life, other than a few years in England where he honorably served his country with the U.S. Air Force, right here in God’s country, joyfully surrounded by family and friends the entire time. He made countless friends along the way while working at Caradco, Sullivan’s, the Dubuque Pack, and most recently at the Q Casino. In his free-time, Frank always enjoying sitting around the card table whenever possible, but his real passion was found in his amazing fish tanks at home. Always in search of the next rare addition to his collection, while also paying meticulous attention to the display, set-up, and care of the fish as they floated peacefully behind the glass. Only the Packer’s on tv could pull his gazing eyes away from the serenity he found in them. Frank was also well known for his quick wit and contagious sense of humor which will thankfully continue to bring smiles to the faces of all who were blessed to be within his inner circle as the memories of moments gone by will gradually resurface over time. His positive outlook on life also made Frank a rare breed. The challenges daily life can bring were never a struggle to be feared, but rather an opportunity to embrace the bigger picture and understand that temporary is ultimately the state of everything we see here. We will miss Frank more than he could ever imagine, but also find some peace in knowing that his health issues are now behind him. Thank you, Frank, for always being a force for good in the lives of all who knew and loved you and may the Lord keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again.

He grew up surrounded by family and friends and not only developed a strong work ethic in his early years, but also an astonishing athletic record. Bob was a proud member of the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame as he had earned 10 varsity letters in football, baseball, basketball, and track, and even maintained his long jump record for over 25 years. With his beautiful bride of 64 years, Charlene Frantz, at home cheering him on, Bob began his career with the Ben Franklin and Woolworth stores until he eventually attained his dream of owning his own business. Roberts Arts & Crafts in Addison, Illinois, was an undeniable success which thankfully allowed Bob to provide for his family and move into early retirement as well. Searching for the tranquility of small-town life, Bob and Charlene moved to Cassville, Wisconsin, to enjoy the good life. Spending an afternoon in the timber cutting wood was just what the doctor ordered for this gentle and humble man. Bob embraced all that was good in this life and was beyond kind and generous with those around him. We are heart-broken today as we face the realization that Bob has been called home ahead of us, but we will thankfully find peace in the days ahead as we reflect on the abundance of memories he so diligently worked on creating. Thank you, Bob, for all of the love and lessons you shared throughout your 84 years among us, and may you have eternal peace, as we seek healing, until we meet again.

She worked as a journalist in Chicago, a substitute teacher in Germany, then returned to her Iowa home town of Audubon where she started Greentree Pottery producing collectors plates for historical societies throughout the state. She also worked as advertising manager for TCI, an Audubon agricultural firm. In 1976 she and Lorraine Larsen of Audubon designed and produced the Iowa First Lady Doll Collection, still on view at the State Capitol in Des Moines. In 1978 Judy relocated to Santa Barbara, California, and started a business making art tiles and tile murals. She produced hundreds of murals for private homes plus many public murals around Santa Barbara, including a commissioned tile mural honoring the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to the city. It can be viewed today on the exterior of the Santa Barbara castle-like courthouse.
In the 1980s Judy started designing fonts for the new Macintosh computers and began writing and designing books. In 1996 Judy met Sandra Scott, director of the Donna Reed Foundation of Performing Arts. The two became friends and partners. During a visit to Galena, Illinois, in 1997 they purchased a stone and brick historic home. In 2000 they purchased a historic stone building in Mineral Point and created Longbranch Gallery. In 2004 Judy and partner Sandy founded Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts, the non-profit school for arts and crafts in Mineral Point. Judy served on the board and taught many classes for Shake Rag Alley for years. She also wrote and published several books; Iowa Lyric, A Collection of Old Men, An Old House in Galena, Memories of an Iowan Veterinarian, Grandma Cherry’s Spoon, An Open Sky, Evie and Me, Carmela Ascending, and Old Teddy’s Travels. She co-authored with Sandy two editions of the history of Shake Rag Alley. As members of the Galena Writers Guild they designed and published three anthologies of members’ short stories.
Judy is survived by life partner, Sandy Scott, owner of Longbranch Gallery. No services are planned; a memorial celebration will be announced at a future date.
