Lydia was born on April 19, 1958, in Maquoketa, IA, a daughter to Gordon A. and Camilla O. (Easton) Wulf. Lydia was a homemaker at heart and thoroughly loved and adored her family in every way she could. Her love for others was tender, compassionate, and unwavering. In her free-time, she found many ways to spend the time. Flower arranging was among her favorites, but sitting down to work on her latest puzzle or spending a little time at her craft table were always welcomed events in her days. Those who knew her best were quite aware that her affinity for horses and her dogs was undeniable. God’s creatures surely possessed a special place in her heart. She also enjoyed singing whenever possible and teaching Sunday School. She loved volunteering at the Rising Hope Food Pantry in Cottonwood, Arizona.
It’s a sad day indeed and many broken hearts are found in the news that Lydia has been called home from this temporal world now. We pray that the Lord will keep her safe in His loving and grace-filled arms now as she rests from her earthly health battles. Thank you, Lydia, for bringing as much light into the world around you that you could throughout your journey among us and may the Lord place His healing hands upon all of the family and friends that you leave behind until we meet again.

He was born September 27, 1958, in Dubuque, IA, to Clinton and Elaine (Erner) White. He began his trucking career with Houtakker Implement in his early 20s and later joined Sara Lee Bakery in Dubuque in 1990. Never one to slow down, he built his own business while still working full-time, hauling everything from hay and farm equipment to oversized loads. For Darrel, trucking was more than a job—it was his passion. Among his favorite hauls were trips for his many Amish friends in Indiana, whose respect and friendship he deeply valued. Darrel also spent many years helping his father on the family farm in Galena and later purchased his own small farm in Hazel Green, where he enjoyed caring for animals.
Those who knew Darrel will remember his dry humor, steady work ethic, and generous heart. He never shied away from lending a hand and found joy in simple independence, friendships, and life on the road. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
He is survived by his mother, Elaine; sisters, Karen White, Joyce (John) Wills, and Mary Beth Hyde; nephews, Nick (Kelsey) Hyde and Alex Hyde; nieces, Megan (Cody Heuer) Wills and Stephanie (Trevor) Mullin; great-niece, Oaklynn Wills; great-nephew, Beau Hyde; aunts, Linda VanGordon and Dawn “Cookie” White; special friend, Sharon Snyder; and many cousins and friends.

Ingwer H. Carstensen
Ingwer Harold Carstensen was born at home on a blustery winter day near Everly, Iowa on January 13, 1929. After declining health but nothing specific, he passed away at the age of 96 1/2 on September 7, 2025 at the Hiawatha Care Center after a long and productive life built on steady labor, service, and devotion to family and community.
Ingwer was the son of Joe and Emma (Jensen) Carstensen. His family moved to a farm in Delmar when he was a boy, and he graduated from Delmar high school in 1946. From an early age, Ingwer showed an aptitude for mathematics and used that skill throughout his life to manage the farm, calculate cattle production, and track the family’s cash flow. On August 3, 1952, he married Dorothy Fey, beginning a partnership rooted in commitment, determination, and perseverance. Shortly after, he was drafted into the army during the Korean War where he served stateside. Following his honorable discharge in 1955, he returned home and continued to farm with his parents.
In 1962, Ingwer and Dorothy purchased a farm near Preston, Iowa, where they raised their family and worked side by side to build a life of purpose. Ingwer dedicated himself to the land, raising corn and feedlot cattle, and remained active in the feedlot well beyond the time others urged him to slow down. His work ethic was steady and unyielding, as was his temperament. He embodied the values of responsibility and persistence that defined his generation. He resided at the farm until this summer.
Beyond his farm, Ingwer gave freely of his time and talents to his community. He served as chaplain for the American Legion for many years, was active in the Izaak Walton League and the Preston Lions Club and contributed to the work of the county and state cattlemen’s associations. His dedication to livestock farming was recognized with induction into the Cattlemen’s Hall of Fame, and he also served as a director on the National Livestock and Meat Board. For over six decades, he was a faithful member of the Preston United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his children Jim (Dawn Strait) Carstensen of Bellevue, Connie (Dan) Conine of Robins, and Mary Jo (Rich) Hainstock of Boulder, Colorado; grandchildren Matthew Hainstock, Carissa (Robert) Minkebige, Ethan Carstensen (Allison Hager), Ben Conine, and Maggie Carstensen (Andrew Le) and step-granddaughter Jenifer (Josh) Pierce, great-granddaughter Margot Minkebige (and sibling on the way); step-great granddaughter Kinzie Pierce; numerous nieces, nephews, great, great-great and even great-great-great nieces and nephews. He knew the names of his many nieces and nephews plus most of their children but got fuzzy on the generations after that.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy, and by all his and Dorothy’s siblings and their spouses.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa with services at 10 A.M., Friday, September 12, 2025, at Carson’s with burial in the Preston Cemetery, with military honors.
Ingwer often remarked that he had lived a good life. One of his favorite things was going to cattle sales around the country. Over the years, he witnessed farming’s transformation—from picking corn by hand and plowing with a horse to today’s immense GPS-guided equipment—and met each change with anticipation and adaptability. In retirement, he and Dorothy enjoyed traveling across the United States, though some of his happiest moments were found on drives through Jackson County. Above all, he valued time spent with family.
A memorial fund has been established in his name so that his legacy of service and steady devotion may live on.

Nancy E. Sochowicz
Nancy E. Sochowicz, age 83, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on September 7, 2025, at home while surrounded by her loving family. To honor Nancy’s life, a private family service is being held at a later date. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Nancy’s family.
Nancy was born on March 10, 1942, in Romeo, MI, a daughter to Carl Christian and Elizabeth Roberta (Robertson) Pollion. She was a free spirit in the true sense of the word. She enjoyed that her children were spread across the US, so she could travel and enjoy new experiences while loving her children and grandchildren. Giving her love and sharing her gathered wisdom were her greatest passions in life. That she is known as “the best mother and grandmother ever “, is her triumph. Nancy was a gypsy, living in over 49 places, gathering, more experiences and more people to love. She had an unconditionally loving and giving soul. Her strong will also played an intricate role in her life and rarely did she bend or sway from her opinion. She was a Scot (Robertson) to the core, and having inherited her father’s strong will (Carl), she did not sway from her beliefs. Believe in yourself and love yourself were always her advice. And she believed you should always be surrounded by your loved ones. Nancy was a devoted scholar of a homeopathic lifestyle, and if there was ever advice or knowledge to share, you would be sure to receive it. She loved art, poetry, reading, eating food, gathering recipes, quilting, sewing, crocheting, dancing, and had a deep connection to water and nature. She was a poet. Some of her creativity are our most prized possessions. But always her children and their families were her most loved possessions, and nobody came between her and her children. Nancy‘s battle with cancer was fought courageously all the way to her last breath. It is difficult to imagine the world without her smiling face and shining light and her most wonderful energy. She felt herself blessed to be alive by our heavenly father, every day. She meant a lot to a lot of people, you know who you are, and she thought you were all “AWESOME “! Nancy (Mom to many), and loving friend to all, will be missed greatly. Words will never be able to express the gratitude for having you in our lives. And may we be granted the peace we seek until we see your beautiful smile once again.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Nancy include,

Leona A. Schiffer
Leona A. Schiffer, 103, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 5:45 a.m. at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with a wake service to be held at 12:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 15, 2025, at St. Joseph Key West Church, with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 10556 Military Road in Key West.
Leona was born on September 27, 1921, near St. Donatus, IA, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Herrig) Nemmers. She grew up in the St. Donatus, LaMotte, and Otter Creek areas. She attended St. Lawrence Otter Creek Catholic School in Zwingle, IA. On February 15, 1944, she was united in marriage to Alvin C. Schiffer at St. Lawrence Otter Creek Catholic Church. Together they had three children: Corrine, Howard, and Lois.
They began farming near Fillmore, IA, for seven years, then farmed near Zwingle for 24 years until retiring to their newly built home and acreage in 1975 near the Zwingle Recreation Area. In 2000, they moved to Dubuque after Alvin suffered a stroke. During their farming years, they milked Guernsey cows, fed Angus steers, raised hogs and chickens, and grew crops. They worked as a team.
Leona’s occupations were numerous. She was a homemaker, gardener, and canner (oh, that canned beef!). She did needlework and sewing, and she and Alvin loved to ballroom dance. She helped milk the cows and led the horse on the fork (ouch! the horse once mashed her little toe). She was a devoted caregiver for those in need, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Leona often prepared “care packages” of food for anyone who was ill. If the parish priest was entertaining guests, she’d be called on for a pie or two. Somehow, she always had the ingredients on hand for any request. At 103 years of age, she was still baking cookies, pies, and angel food or carrot cakes from scratch.
She was known as a “prayer warrior” to many. It was important to her to have access to EWTN to follow the Mass and prayer times. She once told a visiting priest she would pray for us from Heaven.
She and Alvin were active members of St. Lawrence Parish for 49 years. At one point, they were part of the team that refinished the woodwork in the rectory, redid the sanctuary floor of the church, and refreshed the rectory’s paint.
As a devoted mother, she loved her children deeply and found her greatest joy in being a mom, grandma, and great-grandma. Her favorite moments were their special visits, baking their favorite treats, and seeing their appreciative smiles.
She is survived by her children: Corrine (Robert) Schatz of Key West–Dubuque, IA; Howard (Sheri) Schiffer of Marion, IA; and Lois Roth of Mt. Pleasant, IA.
Grandchildren: Brian (Susan) Schatz, Lee’s Summit, MO; Karen (Jason) Allemang, Kansas City, MO; Jason (Caitlin Kontgis) Schatz, Santa Fe, NM; Ryan (Aaron) Moe, LaGrange, IL; Cody (Sarah) Schiffer, Waukee, IA; Sarah (Brian) Kidawa, West Des Moines, IA; and Laura (Rajan) Krishnaswamy, Torrance, CA.
Great-grandchildren: Leah and Daniel Schatz; Emelie Allemang; Truett, Sutton, and Parker Moe; Cora, Maelie, and Elle Schiffer; Maura and Henry Kidawa; Kendall and Kiran Krishnaswamy.
Leona was preceded in death by her treasured husband, Alvin, on March 24, 2004 (one month after their 60th wedding anniversary); her parents; brothers, Sylvester and Vincent Nemmers; sisters, Veronica Anglin, Georgia McLaughlin, and Clara Lambe; son-in-law, Brian Roth; Alvin’s siblings and spouses; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family wishes to thank the residents and staff of Luther Manor Hillcrest Apartments, where she resided for the last 22 years. The euchre players were especially dear to her. Leona and her family also deeply appreciate her cherished lifelong friends.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Joseph Key West Parish, Mary’s Inn Maternity Home, or a charity of your choice.

Robert E. Valentine
Robert E. “Bob” Valentine, age 92, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on September 7, 2025, at Bethany Home while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Bob’s life, a Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Immaculate Conception Church, 3685 County HHH in Kieler, WI. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Bob’s family.
Bob was born on December 31, 1932, in Rockford, IL, a son to Nickolas and Hilda (Pearson) Valentine. He was gifted with a strong work ethic and a devotion to his family and friends which was truly relentless. Bob was blessed to meet his first wife, Rozita Timmerman, and the two were united in marriage for over 20 years before she was sadly called home ahead of him in 1973. Bob was fortunate enough to find love again and married his second wife, Joan (Leibfried) Lucas, where the two of them made many new adventures and memories together through life’s journey. Bob worked at the Dubuque Packing Company for over 30 years and found time to run Valentine’s Bar in Kieler and later Valentine’s in Dickeyville. He faithfully put in the hours and built a legacy which continues to live on in the lives of all who knew and loved him.
Bob and Joan discovered their love for traveling together early on. They spent many years wintering in Tucson, AZ, before making it their home. They eventually moved back to Kieler to be closer to family and friends. The last 6 years have been spent at Bethany Home living the life of leisure. Bob lived life more on the reserved side and was always ready with a smile and a firm handshake. It’s been a wonderful 92 year adventure that Bob was able to enjoy and not only was his life a full one, but the love of so many family members around him really made it all a guy could hope for.
