LeRoy C. Kern

LeRoy C. Kern, 87, of Dyersville, Iowa passed away Sunday, February 10, 2019, at Mercy One Medical Center in Dubuque after a brief illness.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 pm Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12 Ave SW in Dyersville where a parish vigil service will be held at 3:30 pm, a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be held at 5:30 pm, and an American Legion service will be held at 7. Visitation will continue Wednesday from 9 to 10 am at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery where American Legion Post will accord military honors. Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate.

LeRoy was born October 25, 1931, in Dyersville, Iowa the son of Ben and Barbara (Ploesl) Kern. He graduated from Xavier High School with the Class of 1949, and served in the Army. He married Mary Ann Russ on February 13, 1957, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sand Springs. He began working with his father at Kern Locker, a business he eventually purchased and operated until selling it on January 1, 1980. After retiring from the Locker, he purchased hogs for NFO for a few years and then started a Spring Green franchise in Dyersville.

LeRoy was a member of American Legion Post 137 and the Knights of Columbus Council 1734

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann, 2 children, Bernie and Carol Kern, both of Dyersville, and a brother-in-law, Tony (Alice) Russ of Hopkinton, and a sister-in-law, Rita Russ of Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law, Nick Russ.

Richard S. Manning

Richard S. Manning, 63, of Lost Nation, Iowa, passed away on Friday evening, February 8, 2019, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa.

A graveside service and burial will be held at 2:30 P.M., Friday, February 15, 2019, at Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa. Friends and family may gather in remembrance of Richard from 12:30 P.M. to 2 P.M. on Friday, February 15, 2019, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.

Richard Sanford Manning was born on April 10, 1955 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Charles “Chuck” and Jane (Edwards) Manning. He had first worked as a logger, and then began a long career in road construction with Gannon and then Denco Highway Construction until retiring in 2000.

Richard enjoyed sitting around the campfire, fishing and spending time at his campground in Fulton, cookouts with his kids and grandkids, and making dinners for his children.

Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Amy (Colin Impens) Manning of Lost Nation, IA, and Kelli (Richard) Wilslef of Lost Nation, IA; 7 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; brothers, Steve (Cheryl) Manning of Maquoketa, IA, Larry (April) Albertson of Maquoketa, IA, and Mickey Manning of Maquoketa, IA; and sisters, Bonnie (James) Stevenson of Williamsburg, IA, Diana Travette of Preston, IA, Sherri Kay McElroy of KY, Joan Ellen Malloy of Oskaloosa, IA, and Nancy Jo Culver of Maquoketa, IA. Thomas H. Robson

Thomas H. “Jack” Robson, 94, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, died Saturday, February 9, 2019, at Southwest Health in Platteville. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 14, 2019, at Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cuba City with Pastor Calvin Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with military honors accorded. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday and 9-10:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family would appreciate if you wore your favorite sports team apparel for both the visitation and service.

Jack was born on December 2, 1924, the youngest of eight children, to Templeton and Jessie (Wright) Robson. At the age of eight his father died leaving his mother to raise the family during the depression. Jack always looked up to his older brother, Bill, as a father figure. Jack was a great athlete growing up. In September 1942 at the age of 17, Donald Birkett, Clifford Steinhoff and he left school and walked to Platteville and enlisted in the war effort. He laughed about having to walk both ways. Jack was awarded his diploma some 60 years later. On his 18th birthday he found himself in a fox hole half way around the world on the South Pacific Island of Paleliu. He said the farthest he ever traveled from home was Madison one time. After the war he came back to Cuba City and married the love of his life, Patsy Birkett. They were married 63 years before her death in 2009. He went to work for John Deere Tractor Works. His first job there was roofing one of the original buildings and he stayed on for 37 years. Jack loved to hunt and fish. He played fast pitch softball on several local teams. Jack met his second true love when they opened Cole Acres Golf Course. He could be seen as the first one on in the spring and the last one off in the fall. He had six holes in one and at least four more that he didn’t count. He was a true blooded Cuban Fan. If he was poked he would have bled gold. Pat and he could be seen at all sporting events, home and away. The weather didn’t stop them. After Pat’s health failed, he still attended all of the home events. The last few years he got to follow his great-grandchildren’s sporting events. This made him young again. Jack had a special place in his heart for his two cats, Duke and Kitt. Jack was a member of the American Legion Henry Pinch Post #104, Cuba City VFW Post #8318, the Cuba City Fire Department, U.A.W. Local 94 and a charter member of Cole Acres Country Club. To Jack family always came first. He said you are a rich man if you have a good family.

Left to cherish his life are a son, Tom (Mary) Robson, Hazel Green; a daughter, Susan (Tom) Straub, McFarland; grandchildren, John (Renee) Robson, Rodney (Lynee) Robson, Hillary (Eric) McAuliffe, Scott (Lori) Straub, Spencer (Angie) Straub and Andy (Marcie) Robson; thirteen great-grandchildren, Kelli, Katelyn and Thomas Robson, Blake, Drew, and Shayne Robson, Nick Leathy, Macie, Cody and Brooklyn McAuliffe, Julian Straub, Karolyn Straub, and Josie Robson; a brother-in-law, Paul Birkett; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Birkett.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; parents, Templeton and Jessie; a special grandson, Sam Straub; sisters, Virginia Hieser, Edna (Guerdon) Snider, Isabelle (Joe) Bowman, June (Robert) Fox, brothers, Clifford, William “Bill” (Helen), Templeton, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Homer and Lois Birkett; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Birkett; and a brother-in-law, Ronald Birkett.

Jack had a saying, “Life is like the game of golf. The Good Lord will let you borrow it, but he won’t let you keep it.”

Gladys J. Noack

Gladys J. (Ruh) Noack, age 93, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 12:40 a.m., on Sunday, February 10, 2019, at Stonehill Care Center, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Gladys’ life, funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at Behr Funeral Home, with Deacon John Stierman officiating. To celebrate Gladys’ life, family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m., until the time of services at 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Gladys was born on October 29, 1925, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Joseph C. and Malinda (Abresch) Ruh.

As a young girl, Gladys attended school in a one room school house in Dubuque. After graduating, she went to work helping her family tend to their gardens and take the produce they grew to into Farmer’s Market every week. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Vincent Noack, in 1957, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Sherrill, Iowa, and they were blessed with a lovely daughter. Together Gladys and Vince ran a tavern in Sageville for 10 years together, until he was sadly called home ahead of her, much too early in life, on February 28, 1966. After Vince passed away, Gladys became a full time mother and after Sue graduated and was and out on her own, Gladys would reenter the workforce with Luther Manor and St. Dominic’s Villa, until finally retiring in 1990. In her free time, Gladys enjoyed sitting quietly crocheting or heading out to play Bingo with her friends. She had a kind and gentle heart and her pets were always spoiled and well taken care of. Above all, family meant the world to Gladys and she looked forward to helping out with the grandchildren, any chance she had, and also enjoyed taking short day trips spending quality time together. Gladys has certainly been a positive influence to those around her for 93 wonderful years, and we look forward to continuing to honor her memory with acts of kindness for years to come.

Gordon Glasgow

Gordon (Prune) Glasgow, 85 of Scales Mound IL passed away on February 8, 2019 at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February, 13, 2019, at the United Methodist Church, in Scales Mound with Rev. Libby Rutherford officiating. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Scales Mound Township Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of the Dubuque Marine Corps. League.

Gordy was born July 31, 1933 on a farm in Apple River Il. The son of Foster Sr. and Alberta (Cook) Glasgow. He attended school in Scales Mound. In 1956 Gordy was drafted to the U.S Army, stationed at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland as a Military Police. Which later in life was said to be one of the best things he had done.

On June 23, 1957 at the First Presbyterian Church in Scales Mound he married the Love of his life.. “His..Little Sweetheart” Bev White. Happily married for 55 years they had two children. Julie Ann Glasgow-VanRaalte and Jody LaVern Glasgow. They farmed hand in hand on the family farm better known as “The Poor Farm” and together built Glasgow Trucking. Gordy was a daily regular at the coffee shops in Scales Mound, Shullsburg & Elizabeth where cards were played, the BS was spread and jokes were told. He enjoyed life and said you have to have a good laugh.

Gordy was a past member of the JoDaviess County Radio Patrol, Scales Mound Fire Department and a founding member of the High Point Cruisers Car Club. His old cars and antique tractors were his passion.

He loved spending time with his family and friends. His quick wit and jokes will be missed by many.

Surviving are his daughter Julie (Stewart) VanRaalte, his son Jody ( Tammy) Glasgow both of Scales Mound; Five Grandchildren, Chet (Tina) VanRaalte, Quenten-Lee (Sarah) VanRaalte, Scales Mound. Ashlee (Adam) Miller Peosta IA. Gavin (Fiancé Aleah Bauer Glasgow and Chase Glasgow, Scales Mound,.

Six great grandchildren, Chelsey, Laney & Mitchell VanRaalte, Grace, Sam Miller and Gretta VanRaalte. And his four legged buddy, Ali Lou.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Bev, his parents, brothers Meredith and Foster (Jr) Glasgow, sister Lorraine Gaude’, Great Grandson Grayson Miller, niece Debbie Glasgow-Redfern, and his in-laws Delmar and Lauretta White.

Juneva F. “Jenny” Sagers, 77, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Friday morning, February 8, 2019, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A funeral mass celebrating Juneva’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 P.M., Monday, February 11, 2019, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Juneva Frances Ernst was born on August 29, 1941 in Bellevue, Iowa, to Orville and Marie (Till) Ernst. She was a 1959 graduate of Bellevue Marquette High School. She married LeRoy “Lee” Reese, and later married Larrie Sagers of Maquoketa. Both are deceased.

Juneva worked at various places throughout her life including Bluff Lake in Maquoketa on weekends, Hardees, Ace Hardware and Gasser’s True Value in Maquoketa. She retired in 2012.

Juneva was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa.

Those left to honor her memory include her sisters, Cleo Manning of Maquoketa, IA, and Anaclete (Julius) Nims of Maquoketa, IA; sister-in-law, Bonnie Ernst of E. Dubuque, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Ralph, a brother-in-law Jerry Manning, and a niece Kristie Hosch.

Charleene M. Crall

Charleene Mary “Char” Crall, 90, formerly of Dubuque, Iowa and Linden Acres , Lake Delhi passed thru Heaven’s Gates on February 7th, 2019 in Florida.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 13th, 2019 at St. Raphael Cathedral with Rev. Gregory Bahl officiating. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Garryowen Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 12th, 2019 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 3:00 p.m.

Charleene was born on June 5th, 1928 in Cascade Iowa the daughter of James and Mildred (Kennedy) McMahon. She grew up in Chicago and graduated from Chicago Art Institute. In 1951 she married the love of her life Thomas Crall. They lived and traveled to several states and countries with Tom’s job. He preceded her in death on July 14, 2003.

She loved her God, the ocean, Lake Delhi, doll making, ceramics, painting, garage and estate sales, her animals and playing games. She also enjoyed time with her Delhi Ladies Club and the Red Hats Club; and was very proud of her Irish Heritage.

She is survived by her son Christopher; two grandchildren; special niece and Godchild Deb (Joe) Cotter with whom she wintered in Florida. Niece Tammy (Gary) Parton; nephews Bill (Kathy) Purvis, Michael Purvis. Jerry (Deb) Jacob, and Dan Jacob; her aunt and best friend Virgie Menge ; special cousins Penny (Dave) Schmerbach, Jill (Kenny) Lewis and Carla Menge, along with several great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters Patricia Purvis and Donna Jacob; niece Lori Jacob; nephew Jimmy (Teri) Jacob; several aunts and uncles; and a cousin Kenny (Carla) Menge.

The family request no flowers. Memorials may be made to hospice in Char’s name.

Ray E. Crowl

Ray E. Crowl, 92, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 3, 2019, in Cape Coral, FL.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in East Dubuque, with Pastor Jerry Chase and Parson John Emery officiating.

Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of American Legion Post # 787.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Monday at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, where American Legion Post # 787 will meet at 4:00 p.m. Friends may also call from 9:15 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Tuesday.

Ray was born December 16, 1926 in Goldfield, IA, the son of Herbert and Lenore (DeBord)Crowl.

He married Ruby (Warden) Crowl, the daughter of George W. and Bessie A. (Zachery) Warden of Polk City, IA, on May 19, 1945, in Madison, WI, where Ray was stationed while attending the US Navy radio operator’s school.

In addition to Ray’s Navy service, he spent 45 years serving as Choir Director at Wesley United Methodist Church, and enjoyed singing in the Sweetwater Gospel Quartet and the Barbershop Quartet for many years. Ray was also a member of American Legion Post # 787 of East Dubuque. He spent 30 years as a telegraph operator for the Illinois Central Railroad.

It would be easy, though accurate, to say that Ray was loved and adored by his family. The truth is that his impact was felt far beyond just us lucky few. From his Church family to his closer-than-neighbors to his friends at the Village Inn in Dubuque, Ray brightened the lives of everyone he met.

It was in his bright, easy, constant smile. His love of music, and of God. His adoration for his family, especially his pride for his great-grandkids. His care for the bluebirds and orioles he watched over at his many birdfeeders. His devotion, most of all, to his wife of 69 years, Ruby, who passed away on February 18, 2015. With her he built a life of happiness together with their two children, five grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. With her he spent nearly every waking moment, on their many dates at the Olive Garden, walks around Kennedy Mall, and afternoons spent cheering on their grandkids and great-grandkids at innumerable sporting events, choir concerts, school plays, and “grandparent’s days.”

Ray will be missed for everything he brought to those of us on Earth, but we’re glad for him to be joining Ruby in Heaven. We are so lucky to have known and loved this gentle, generous, patient man.

Ray is survived by two (2) children, Joyce (Dan) Busch of Dickeyville, WI, and Greg (Andrea) Crowl of Cape Coral, FL; as well as five (5) grandchildren, Tina Mowery, Terry Busch, Tracy Cushman, Christian Fisher, Erik Fisher; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, threesiblings, and his wife Ruby.

William Edward Lux

William Edward Lux, 93, of Delhi, Iowa, formerly of Hopkinton and Manchester, died at his home on Friday, February 8, 2019, after a 2-year battle with cancer of the prostate.

Funeral Service is at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Manchester, with Rev. Phil Rogers officiating. Visitation is 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Manchester. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Interment with Military Funeral Honors will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 11, 2019 at Hopkinton Cemetery, Hopkinton, Iowa.

He was born on October 17, 1925, in Hopkinton, the son of Russell Ellsworth and Jean Jewell (Kirkwood) Lux. Bill was baptized at the Methodist Church in Hopkinton. In 1943 he graduated from Hopkinton High School and then enrolled at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon.

In December 1943, Bill was inducted into the U.S. Navy and inducted into active service in March 1944. Bill met his future wife, Rosemary, at a USO dance in South Bend, Indiana, while attending Officer Training School at Notre Dame. The USS Battleship California was sunk at Pearl Harbor, then raised and re-entered service. It was then that Bill served on the USS California in the Pacific Fleet, assigned to Okinawa, and was mustered out in June of 1946. He then returned to Cornell College.

On June 15, 1947, William Edward Lux and Rosemary Andrea Craven were married at South Bend, Indiana. To this union were born four children: James, David, Jonathan “Scott,” and Julia. Bill attended Iowa State University, completing his bachelor’s degree in poultry husbandry. Bill and Rosemary moved back to Hopkinton in 1949. There, Bill and his brother Robert owned and operated Lux Leghorn Land Farms, a poultry breeding farm, chick hatchery, and feed mill, continuing the business established by their parents in the 1920’s. After 62 years of marriage, Rosemary died in 2010. On June 16, 2012, Bill was united in marriage to Marcheta Roberta (Furman) Cooey. The couple made their home in Delhi.

Bill was a member of the Hopkinton United Methodist Church and the Manchester United Methodist Church. He served on the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries and traveled throughout Africa providing mission oversight. He also served on UMCOR, traveling to the Philippines. Bill served on the Iowa Ecumenical Affairs Committee and was elected to the General Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1984 to 2004. He was eager to devote 40 years of work and support for many Christian missions, one of which was the Heifer Project, which seeded livestock to individuals to improve their food and economic sources. Bill enjoyed sharing his faith and mission projects of the church, speaking to many congregations throughout Iowa and beyond.

Bill served as president of the Hopkinton School Board and of the Maquoketa Valley School Board. He served on the bank board of Citizens State Bank and as treasurer of Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and was active in numerous other civic and volunteer organizations.

Bill loved sports. He played football and basketball for Cornell College, baseball for the Hopkinton team, and followed Iowa wrestling and football. He was an avid tennis player well into his 80’s. He loved classical music, folk music, a great band, and singing hymns. He loved the farm fields and woodlands of Iowa and traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and six continents. Bill especially loved and was proud of his children and grandchildren. His goal was to live the life of a godly man; a godly husband; a godly father; and a godly grandfather. Bill will be remembered most for his smile, his congenial spirit, his love of God, and his desire for you to know that God loves you.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marcheta Cooey Lux of Delhi; one brother, Robert Kirkwood (Gloria) Lux of Scottsdale, Arizona; two sons, James William (Annette Andrews-Lux) Lux of Clinton, Washington, and David Andrew (Cindy) Lux of Cedar Falls; his daughter, Julia Kay (Craig) Thompson of Strawberry Point; a daughter-in-law, Patrice Lux of Louisville, Kentucky; one stepson, Ralph (Donna) Cooey of Longmont, Colorado; one stepdaughter, Deborah (Tracy) Knake of Delhi; a step-daughter-in-law, Barb Cooey (Danny) Shaffer of Potosi, Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren, Chris Lux, Christina Lux, Joshua (Trisha) Lux, Matthew (Claire) Thompson, Jared (Leah) Thompson, Mark (Carrie) Thompson, Anna (Sam) Danforth, Jonathan Thompson, Caleb (Susan) Lux, Christian Thompson, Nathan Lux, Shannon Lux, and Ashlyn Lux; 10 step-grandchildren, Jim (Linda) Pingel, Jody Cooey, Ryan (Monica) Cooey, Justin (Cali) Thole, Kamin Loney, Candace (Dave) Meredith, Tyler (Katie) Cooey, Breana (Carson) Ray, Miranda (Adam) Kracke, and Austin (Kathleen Galloway) Knake.

Sister Marise Barry, OP

Sister Marise Barry, OP, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019. Her funeral Mass will be Friday, Feb. 15, 2019, at 10:30 a.m., at the Sinsinawa motherhouse. A wake service will be Thursday, Feb. 14, at 6:30 p.m.

Sister Marise ministered in the midwest as kindergarten teacher for 19 years and as principal for five years at Corpus Christi, New York City. She was in social service at Sacred Heart Parish, Washington, D.C.; at DePorres Health Center, Marks, Miss.; and a clinical therapist at Sinnissippi Mental Health Center, Dixon, Ill. In 1992, she was elected Eastern Province Provincial. She later served as school counselor for Catholic Social Services in Fall River, Mass. She came to St. Dominic Villa in 2018.
Sister Marise was born in Chicago, May 25, 1931, to Willard and Catherine (Garrity).

She is survived by nephews and her Dominican sisters.

Dwaine Russell Persels, 87, of Oxford Junction, Iowa passed away on February 6, 2019 at the Anamosa Care Center.

To honor Dwaine’s life a visitation will be held at Lahey and Dawson Funeral Home in Oxford Junction on Saturday February 9 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. with a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. with Military Honors. A burial will be held at the Mayflower Cemetery following.

Dwaine was born on April 16, 1931, in Osceola, Iowa, to Floyd and Vivian (Farr) Persels. After high school he continued his education and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Simpson College and a Master’s and Specialist Degrees in Education from Drake University.

He served faithfully and honorably in the United States Army, and during the Korean War he spent one and a half years in Japan.

On September 9 in 1952 Dwaine was united in marriage to Hazel Higbee at Simpson Methodist Church in Des Moines.

Dwaine’s career as an educator included positions as a teacher, a coach, and an administrator. He served as superintendent of Oxford Junction Consolidated Schools for 25 years.

Dwaine enjoyed fishing, golfing, reading, and counting ribs. He also cheered for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

He is survived by his children; Jo Ellen (Steven) Benn of Rapid City, SD, Sally (Len) Clapp of Anamosa, Michael (Lisa) Persels of Tiffin, 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Hazel, his two brothers Dwight and Darrell, and his granddaughter Rachel.

Dorothy E. Schilling

Dorothy E. Schilling, age 78, of Dubuque, IA passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Stonehill Care Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 9 AM until Mass time at 12 noon at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Fr. Michael Schueller will be presiding. Interment will be offered at St. John’s Cemetery, Centralia, IA.

Dorothy was born August 22, 1940 in Graf, IA to her parents, Matthew and Mildred (Cole) Maas. She married the love of her life, Robert “Ace” Schilling, on April 4, 1959 at St. John the Baptist Church in Peosta. Robert preceded her in death on June 8, 2014. Dorothy was best known for taking care of others. She always had a caring heart and put other peoples’ needs before her own. Many life lessons were learned from Dorothy. She taught others what it meant to be loving, giving, hardworking, humble, and kind.She enjoyed going to church, camping, gardening, her fish pond, cooking, playing euchre, “Coffee Clutch”, stock car races and spending time with family (especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.) Holidays were a big deal at her house. Grandchildren have many fond memories of her extravagant Halloween parties.

John W. Perkins

John W. Perkins, 77 of Dubuque, passed away Monday, February 4, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with leukemia. John battled long enough to celebrate his 51st Wedding Anniversary to his loving wife, Jean M. Perkins. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 11:45 AM on Saturday, February 9, at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road followed by the funeral service at Noon.

John was born September 30, 1941 in Waterloo, Iowa to Clarence “Cy” and Ruth (Miller) Perkins. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1959. On February 3, 1968, he married his loving wife, Jean M. Gantenbein at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque, Iowa. John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. John had a passion for all things family. John enjoyed attending his children’s sporting events, music concerts, and competitions. After welcoming grandchildren to the family, John started the cycle again, finding joy in attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, music concerts, and music competitions. Dad / Grandpa gave up many personal interests for his family.

He retired from John Deere in 2011 after 46 years. He worked various positions while at John Deere, retiring as an assembler in the Small Crawler Division. He was so proud of his service to John Deere, staying loyal to the company until the day he passed.

John enjoyed volunteering to set up Reflections in the Park at Murphy Park for Hillcrest Family Services. He also enjoyed golfing with friends, exploring different golf courses surrounding the Dubuque area. In retirement, John reconnected with a great group of buddies from John Deere, having coffee on a regular basis and traveling around Iowa to various minor league baseball parks. It wasn’t as much about the baseball as it was about fellowship with friends. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, Atlanta Braves fan (starting with their time in Milwaukee), and Iowa Hawkeye fan.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jean, his two children: Tina (Brent) Davis, Tim (Sarah) Perkins, and his six grandchildren: Abigail Davis, Makenna Davis, Daniel Davis, Norah Perkins, Lanis Perkins and Annah Perkins; sister in-law Barbara Gantenbein, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Ruth and Clarence Perkins, his father and mother in-law; John and Selma Gantenbein, brother in-law David Gantenbein, brother in-law Carl (Tony) Gantenbein, sister in-law Carol Gantenbein, and niece Becky Gantenbein.

Barbara Tabor

Barbara Tabor, 88, of Baldwin, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday morning, February 6, 2019, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 11, 2019, at First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 P.M. on Sunday, February 10, 2019, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be in the Pence Cemetery, rural Baldwin, Iowa.

Barbara Dwigans was born on July 7, 1930 in Carroll, Iowa, to Merritt Joseph and Ada Pearl (Long) Dwigans. She was a 1948 graduate of Manly High School and attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon for one year and then the University of Iowa from 1949 to 1951. She married Dennison Clifford Tabor on February 10, 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 18, 2012.

Dennison and Barbara returned home from Iowa City on March 6, 1951 to the family farm where she became a homemaker and volunteer extraordinaire.

Barbara was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Monmouth, Iowa, the United Methodist Women, GFWC and the PEO. She enjoyed cooking, reading, being with family, and cheering on the Hawkeyes.

Barbara is survived by her children, Kay Dee (Bruce) Ingham of Davenport, IA, Brian (Deanna) Tabor of Baldwin, IA, Dave (Durene) Tabor of Monticello, IA, and Phil (Nancy) Tabor of Maquoketa, IA; “other son Brian” Brian Marceau; a sister, Nancy Lasell of Indianola, IA; 13 grandchildren, Wyatt Tabor of Iowa City, IA, Adam (Angela) Tabor of Hickory Hills, IL, Andy Ingham of Minneapolis, MN, Abby (Paul) Fischer of Baldwin, IA, Alex Ingham of Minneapolis, MN, Jessica (Tobi) Luetkemeier of Monticello, IA, Megan Tabor of Davenport, IA, Michael (Melissa Osman) Tabor of Kirkland, WA, Kathleen Tabor of Newport, VT, Elizabeth Tabor of Baldwin, IA, Molly (Eric) Coddington of Ames, IA, Jacqueline Tabor of Ames, IA, and Sarah Tabor of Iowa City, IA; and 7 great-grandchildren. John Larry Fitz

John Larry Fitz, 74, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on February 2, 2019 at Ennoble Nursing and Rehab, surrounded by his family.

Funeral service will be at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 9th, 2019 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with Jack Redmon officiating and military honors accorded by American Legion Post #6. Family and friends may visit after 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home until time of service.

John was born on June 6, 1944 in Waterloo, Iowa the son of Frank and Anna (Thompson) Fitz. He was a United States Marine during the Vietnam War, serving from November 7, 1961 to August 26, 1972.

He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity, Summa Cum Lade, and Master’s Degrees in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Dubuque.

He married Betty Elaine Bateman on August 26, 1972 at Faith United Methodist Church in Dubuque.

John was self-employed. He owned and operated a roofing and siding company, did small home improvements, recovered and refinished furniture, small engine repair and lawn care.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 6 and the American Red Cross.

He loved boating, camping, and fishing, as well as sharing the vast knowledge he had gained over the years. He ruled his home with an iron fist, yet he had a strong sense of humor and was always trying to embarrass you.

He is survived by his wife Betty; Daughters Tammy (Jeff) Benson, Ardeth (Jason) Steffen, Nicole (Josh) Hocking and there 6 children; eight grandchildren, Tasha, Jessica, Jake, Sierra, Drake, Kaden, Skyla, Treyton; 6 great grandchildren; Brothers Gene (Shirley) Fitz, Ron (Janet) Fitz, Harold (Anna) Fitz; Sisters Patti Shinneman, Jodeen Fitz, Barbara Welsh, Shirley (Larry) Davis, Marsha Schulz, Rhonda ( Chuck) Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; Father and Mother-in-law Gerald and Elnora Bateman; son Carlton Fitz; Grandson David; Granddaughter Alonna; Brothers Russel, Frankie; and his special dog Gemini.
