Paul J. Papin

Paul J. “Jack” Papin, age 82 of Dubuque, Iowa completed his earthly journey on July 20, 2019 at home, surrounded by his kids and wife.  To honor Jack’s life, a private family Celebration of Life will be held at the Tri-State Veterans Memorial Plaza at a later date. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Paul’s family.

If you don’t know “Jack”, let me tell you the rest of the story….

Jack was born on October 24, 1936 in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin, a son to Raymond “Ray” Paul and Madeline Catherine (Duehr) Papin, owners and operators of Hawkeye Trailer Court. Jack’s patriotism to both his country, and moral beliefs in defending our constitution were instilled in all aspects of his core family values, service to his country and work ethics; no matter where he went and who he encountered, you knew where he stood.

After graduation from Dubuque Senior High School, Jack honorably served his country with the United States Navy during the Korean War.  He continued to carry his core values and patriotism forward throughout his entire life and was not only a longtime member of the Dubuque American Legion Post #6, but he also had the privilege of serving as the Sr. Vice Commander Adjutant with the VFW Post #9663.  He proudly received the “Veterans of Foreign Wars” award of commendation for Meritorious and Distinguished Service in furthering the aims and ideals of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States on December 1, 2018.

Upon completing his service to our great nation, Jack began his 40 year civilian career with Dubuque’s Local #125 Plumbers & Steamfitters Union as a Plumber/Pipefitter. He worked both locally, and traveled many years on the road across the span of the United States.  In addition, he devoted his time to the Dubuque City Plumbing and City Mechanical Boards for many years sharing his wealth of knowledge and giving back to his community.

Those of who knew Jack, realized he loved to tinker on many projects and involved either himself and/or his children in other activities that he was passionate about. His love for building and construction, mechanical – rebuilding engines, aerospace, kids sport activities, veterans’ affairs, shooting, hunting, respect for God and Country, and so much more was shared from conception of an idea to execution.  And Jack truly shined when it did not go in his favor; he always encouraged each and every one of us to never quit, no matter what.  Jack’s motto was “give 110% and be proud of what you have to offer”.  Some of his activities included, Boy Scouts, The American Kennel Club, Dog Breeder of German Shepard’s (his travel companions on the road), Hempstead High School Football and so much more.

Jack was first and foremost though a devoted family man.  His military service protected the freedoms which would allow his family to grow and prosper, of which he encouraged all to never forget.  His natural abilities in construction made it possible for Jack to provide for his family as they grew, and in turn pass on his true grit work ethics for them to adopt in their own lives.  Jack’s determination to love and nurture them from his heart is what truly brought him joy.  He was united in marriage to his lovely wife, Nancy S. Sajdak, on June 3, 1978 in Chicago, IL.  They have been blessed with 41 wonderful years together, and today Jack’s children carry with them all of the lessons he relentlessly instilled within them through his words, thoughts and actions over the years.

His family was everything and thankfully he has left an abundance of memories which will bring some comfort in the days ahead.  Jack has now surrendered his earthly pilot’s license for an eternal one.  His project list is completed and peace is finally his after such a long battle.  We will never forget all of the good that the world has experienced because of you Paul “Jack” and we will wait patiently in quiet sorrow for the day when we can hear your voice once again.  God Speed Paul, God Speed Good Sir and God Bless.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Paul include,

his loving wife of 41 years,
Nancy Papin, Dubuque, Iowa;

his 6 adored children,
Kristine Harrison,
Cindy (Bob) Renne,

Vivian River

Vivian River, 92, of Maquoketa, IA passed away peacefully at home Friday, July 19, 2019.

A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, July 26 at 12:30 pm at the United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am to noon at the church prior to the service. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Maquoketa.

Vivian was born April 23, 1927 in Minot, ND to Latvian immigrants, Alida and Ernest Mukin. She grew up in Crosby, ND and, following the early death of her father, she had many responsibilities helping her mother run the Allen Hotel in Crosby. Her mother sold the hotel prior to Vivian’s senior year of high school. They moved to Minot, ND where Vivian completed her senior year and then attended Minot Teacher’s College for one year.

She graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, where she met and married Ross River on March 25, 1951. Shortly thereafter, when Ross was called for more military service in the United States Air Force, Vivian accompanied him to Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, where their first child, Susan, was born. After the military years, they moved to Maquoketa, IA where their other four children, Jean, Kay, Bruce and David were born and where Vivian and Ross have resided ever since during their 68 years of marriage.

Vivian was a devoted wife and she cherished her role as a mother and grandmother. By example, she sought to instill the values of kindness, compassion, faith, humility, hard work and perseverance.

She handled the administrative responsibilities for the agricultural businesses and family farm that she and Ross owned.

She was on the Maquoketa Community School Board for several years and was its president part of that time. Education for all young people was very important to Vivian. She worked with others during her time on the board to start the MAC (Maquoketa Alternative Classroom). She worked with 4-H clubs for many years in Jackson County and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Maquoketa Area YMCA from its beginning.

Vivian also served as a very committed lay person as a long-time member of the United Methodist Church. She sang in the choir, was a member of the Care Team, taught Sunday school for many years and served on many committees.

She enjoyed walking, reading, sewing, growing her flowers and following the ISU Cyclones and the Maquoketa Cardinals. She always loved a rainy day because she said there had been so few of them where she grew up in North Dakota. She loved nature, bird watching and said that she was blessed to live in Jackson County with so many trees and the beauty of seasons with green and colorful landscapes. She had a sparkling sense of humor and loved being around her family. Vivian lived with a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. She quietly did many things for others in the community in their times of need. When she became quite ill before she died, she was hesitant about accepting help from others. When it was pointed out to her that she had done so much for others, she said that she always wished she could have done more. As she often said to her children and grandchildren, “the best thing you can give someone is to give of yourself.”

Vivian will be remembered and missed dearly by many, among them her husband, Ross River of Maquoketa; her children; Sue River of Madison, WI, Bruce River (Chris) of Maquoketa, and David River (Paula) of Maquoketa; her grandchildren, Amanda River, Ashley River, Robert River, Ben Buchner, Peyton River and Carter River; great-grandchild, Hallie Harrison; her sisters-in law and brothers-in-law, her nieces and nephews and her cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two daughters, Jean River and Kay River.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of other expressions of sympathy to the United Methodist Church of Maquoketa, Camp Courageous or Hospice of Jackson County.

Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is in charge of the arrangements. Online Condolences may be left at www.CarsonAndSon.com.

Kathryn A. “Katie” (Leliefeld) Ben, age 82, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 10:39 a.m., on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at Stonehill Care Center, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Katie’s life, funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road, with Rev. Tom Heathershaw officiating. To celebrate Katie’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Friday, July 19, 2019, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture service held at 2:45 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Katie was born on November 23, 1936, in Guttenberg, Iowa, daughter of Daniel and Rose (Kleine) Leliefeld.

Katie was united in marriage to the love of her life, Harry Ben on January 26, 1957, at St. Mary’s Church in Guttenberg, Iowa, and they were blessed with 54 wonderful years and 7 children together before he was called home ahead of her on March 23, 2011. Katie was a loving, full time wife, mother and homemaker, who did in home daycare for several years and was affectionately know as “mom”, “ma”, “maw”, “madre” and “mother”, to not only her own children, but their friends and all of the daycare kids. In later years Katie would also share her domestic talents with Balltown-Sherrill Catholic Schools, Albrecht Acres and Holy Family Hall in their housekeeping departments. She was an excellent cook and made sure everyone who visited was well fed, whether it be the orange slices and candy on the counter, an egg sandwich, or anything else she had on hand. In her free time, Katie enjoyed reading, crocheting, and going out to eat with family and friends. Beyond a doubt, Katie’s family was always her top priority, she looked forward to spending time with the children and grandchildren, creating countless beautiful memories that will be cherished forever. Katie’s faith was also an important aspect of her daily life as evidenced by her long time membership with Holy Ghost Church and her current membership with the Church of the Resurrection. We are deeply saddened at losing the matriarch of our family today, but take some comfort in knowing that she is now happily reunited with not only her beloved husband Harry, but all of her family members called home before her.
