Rich was born October 5, 1926 in Dubuque, to Walter and Amelia (Tschirgi) Jahn. He grew up on Dubuque’s North End, often sharing fond memories of growing up in a tight-knit working family. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1944. He later met the love of his life, Joan (Frommelt) Jahn and started a family of his own. Rich always worked hard to make his family and others their best self. He had a special way of bringing out the best qualities in others. He worked 42 years at the Dubuque Pack.
Throughout his life, he was an involved athlete. He played baseball for the Minor League Cubs in Fayetteville, NC, played in four fast pitch world tournaments, won two senior National bowling tournaments (in Syracuse, NY and Reno, NV), and he was honored in three Hall of Fames for bowling, softball, and Wisconsin Beagle Clubs. Rich loved being a Cubs fan and was happy he watched them win the World Series. While Rich had a strong passion to be the best in any sport he was participating in, he had an even stronger passion to help others succeed. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and shared these talents with his children, grandchildren, nephews, and many hunting buddies.
Rich was a dedicated and active member in the community; he was a great bingo caller for the KC’s and Sacred Heart Parish for 60 years. He was part of the group that formed the Willowa Beagle Club in Platteville, WI, participated in the Power of Prayer (of which he was an original member, and made house calls for St. Vincent Society. He was naturally selfless and kind toward anyone he encountered. In retirement he enjoyed spending time with family/friends, cooking, gardening, fishing, hunting, and playing cards. He was proud of the life he built through hard work, determination, and love. It was common place for Rich to share his excitement and joy whenever something positive happened for his family. The running laugh for years was when he addressed his family members with a “Doctor” title before saying their name, and he was honored with the titile “Dr. Jahn” by his family for his wealth of knowledge in nature and everyday life.

You would often find Gina relaxing by her pool on hot summer days.

James C. Sutton
James C. “Jim” Sutton, age 89, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 9:00 p.m., on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at home, surrounded by his loving family. To honor James’ life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, November 2, 2018, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 1199 Main Street, with Rev. John Taylor officiating. To celebrate James’ life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m., until 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
James was born on September 4, 1929, in Lexington, Mississippi, son of William “Billy” and Gertrude (O’Neal) Sutton.
James was born and raised in Mississippi, where he developed a strong work ethic, that would lead him to devote 45 years of his life to the Illinois Central Railroad. He began working at work at age 15 and it would take him from Mississippi to Springfield, Illinois and then to Galena, Illinois and on to Dubuque in 1958. It was here that he and Ruby chose to stay and raise their children. James retired from the railroad in 1988, at age 60, never missing a single day of work. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ruby Richmond, on May 31, 1952, in Lexington, and he and his bride would be blessed with 63 years together and 8 adoring children, before Ruby was sadly called home ahead of him on September 18, 2015. James was an extremely social person, with an expert degree in the “BS” department, which made him loveable and irresistible to everyone around him. He was also well known, but not quite as loved, for holding up traffic on his 10 mph car rides around town to check out everything that was going on in the area, while stopping to visit family and friends along the way. When some welcomed free time around the house made its way into his day, James could easily be found out in the bright sunshine, putting his “green thumb” to work in the garden, tending to his flower beds, or simply sitting on the front porch chewing on one of his favorite cigars. James never shied away from a hard days work, and could do anything from carpentry projects to electrical and plumbing jobs, as long as someone was willing to show him how to do it just once, he truly was a “Jack of all Trades”. We are deeply saddened at the loss of such a loving, kind, excellent example of what a father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother should be, but we will do our best to carry on his tradition of hard work and taking time to really get to know people, and use those skills to make the world around us a little better place for everyone.
Those left to cherish James’ memory include
his children,
David (Excelsa) Sutton,
Kathy Sutton,
Lynn Sutton,
Allen Sutton,
and Daniel Sutton, all of Dubuque, IA;
his 6 grandchildren,

and a sister,
Gertrude Torrey, Lexington, MS.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his adoring wife, Ruby Sutton; a daughter, Connie Sutton; and two sons, James Sutton Jr. and Gary Sutton.
James’ family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped care for James, especially Dr. Cao, and the nurses and staff of Above and Beyond Hospice, their kindness, compassion and professional attention was greatly appreciated.

Daniel A Schriver
Daniel Arden Schriver, at the young age of 45, was taken from us far too soon on October 23, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Dan was born in Dubuque, beautiful son of Michelle, adored grandson of Arden & Dorothy. 5 years later in Scottsdale, Arizona, along came his little brother Ian, and our family was complete. Mom and the boys moved to Florida in 1986, and a whole new adventure began.
Dan became the proud dad of Danny & Kennedy, proud uncle to Liz and Ella Grayce, brother-in-law to Adriayn, and great uncle to Iris. He went on to start his own business, and loved what he was doing. His customers are missing him already. Our hearts are shattered today at the loss of our precious Dan, but we take comfort in the fact that Dan is now free of his earthly ailments that he has faced with such courage and strength, and that he is now resting in eternal peace, probably having a beer with ‘gramps’.
The family would like to thank the professionals at Lawnwood Regional Trauma Center & Heart Institute, the University of Miami Life Alliance Organ Recovery Team, St. Lucie Fire Rescue, and the wonderful medical staff at Lawnwood for their compassionate care and concern. Dan saved two lives today with his generous donation of the gift of life. We are most proud.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

Tom was truly a loving father to his son, who will miss his childish ways. He was an avid gamer and Trekkie. Tom enjoyed discussing science, pondering the universe, and debating any of life’s points. His mechanical ingenuity and curiosity enabled him to repair most everything. Tom will be missed.

Harlan was born on March 25, 1936 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Harold and Madeline (Blakeman) Doty. He was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and a U.S. Navy veteran. On October 9, 1956, Harlan married Kathleen “Kay” Droeszler at St. Patrick’s Church, Garryowen, IA. Harlan was a dedicated machinist for John Deere Dubuque Works for 34 years. He was involved in ergonomics, recreation committees, a union steward, and you were blessed to have him tell you one of his many John Deere stories. He was a very proud union man. He retired in 1994, and then spent the next 20 years as an ambassador “tour guide” for the company.
Playing baseball was an important part of Harlan’s life. He played for Dubuque Senior High School in his early years and then coached his son’s and grandson’s teams. In 2004, Harlan received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Dubuque Independent League for his dedication and involvement in the league from 1968 to 2004. On February 4, 2012, he was inducted into the Dubuque Area Labor Hall of Fame. Harlan was a member of Holy Ghost Church for over 60 years, the UAW Local 94 and American Legion Post #6 of Dubuque. He coached for many years in the Independent League and the Dubuque semi-pro league. He also volunteered for the Washington Tool Library and North End Neighborhood Association. Most of all, Harlan enjoyed the many hours with his family on the river floating in their pontoon houseboat. We are very much in sorrow at the loss of our dear husband, dad and grandpa, but we feel thankful and comfort in knowing that he is free from health issues which has plagued him for many months.
Surviving are his lovely wife of 62 years, who he dearly cherished, Kay of Dubuque; his children Harlan (Becky) Doty Jr., James (Shari) Doty and Jil (Mark) VanCleave all of Dubuque, Jeff (Shelly) Doty of Runnells, IA, Jodi (Colin) Sweeney of Dubuque, IA and Sandy (Jeff) Wall of Holmen, WI; his grandchildren Jacob (Morgan) and Luke Doty, Eric, Megan and Ryan Doty, Haley and Conner VanCleave, Liz Smith, Caitlin, Carsen and D.J. Doty, Austin Jennings, Tiffany Doty, Dylan and Morgan Sweeney, Mikayla, Kelsey and Emily Wall; his great grandchildren, Adriana and Alaina Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Madeline Doty; step-mother, Arnolda (Zenner) Doty; an infant brother; and his mother and father-in-law, Ralph and Imelda Droeszler.
Memorials may be given to the Harlan Doty memorial fund or Hospice of Dubuque.
The Doty family wishes to extend a special thank you to the entire staff at Dubuque Specialty Care, especially Sally, the Hospice of Dubuque team and Dr. Matthew Kirkendall and Kate for all their incredible care and support.
