Marilynn J. Jacobs

Marilynn J. Jacobs, age 90, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 12:08 a.m., on Friday, October 12, 2018, at home, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Marilynn’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at St. Columbkille’s Church, 1230 Rush Street, with Rev. David A. Schatz officiating. To celebrate Marilynn’s life, family and friends may visit from 4:00 pm. until 7:00 p.m., on Monday, October 15, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Marilynn was born on November 16, 1927, in Eldon, Iowa, daughter of Claude and Caroline (Leinhauser) Steele.

Marilynn grew up in Eldon, Iowa, where she graduated from high school and went on to earn her teaching certificate from the Ottumwa Community College. She taught elementary school in Eldon for a few years, before a nice young man, Paul Jacobs, would catch her eye and change her path. Marilynn and Paul were united in marriage on August 26, 1950, in Eldon, and the two were blessed with 8 children and 26 wonderful years together, before Paul was sadly called home ahead of her on September 15, 1976. After they wed, Marilynn happily became a full time wife, mother and homemaker, who took great pride in making sure her family was well cared for. Much to her family’s delight, Marilynn was very talented in the kitchen and was famous for her delicious pies. Marilynn’s faith was of utmost importance to her, she was a long time member of St. Columbkille’s Church, and was extremely active in several organizations where she could share her beliefs with others. She and Paul were very involved with Cursillo, CEW and Marriage Encounter, as well as several Bible study groups within the parish and city-wide. She was part of the Mothers Prayers Group, an associate of the Sisters of the Presentation, a founding member of the Community of the Living Word and was a staple with the Meals Program at the Rescue Mission for over 35 years. She wrote a column for The Witness called “Family Alive”, and was passionate about her work with the Spiritual Growth Program and the Social Justice Community with Sister Parish of Our Lady of the Sioux in Ogalala South Dakota. When Marilynn found some quiet time in her days, she enjoyed bird watching, getting outside to enjoy the sunshine and tend her flower gardens, or simply sitting down to read a book or put together her next puzzle. She had a great appreciation of music, which she gladly shared, by playing piano and singing in the church choir. Beyond a doubt, family was the one thing that brought the greatest joy to Marilynn’s days, especially when the grandchildren were involved. Marilynn was always their favorite “babysitter”, and she would set up sleep-overs and movie nights on a regular basis, as well as going along on family vacations. She knew how to make everyone feel special, and took joy in writing letters and sending cards for every occasion. We are deeply saddened at the loss of our sweet mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, but take some comfort in the fact that she is now reunited with all of her loved ones called home ahead of her, and awaits our arrival one day in her Heavenly Home.
Those left to cherish Marilynn’s memory include

her children,
Steve (Sherry) Jacobs, Dubuque, IA,
Paula (Ron) Payne, St. Joseph, IL,
Mary (Mike) Cass, Rockford, IL,

Edward Durey

We celebrate the life of Edward “Ed” Durey, son of Donald “Sonny” and Ruth Durey. Ed passed away on October 10, 2018, at the age of 50, at his home after a valiant fight from the resulting effects of multiple strokes. He has joined his father, Sonny, who passed away in December.

Funeral service for Ed will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 15th, 2018 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with Rev. Dianne Christopher officiating. Burial will follow in Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory.

Ed was a trailblazer. He was a member of the first group of children with disabilities to attend public school. Simply through living his life, Ed helped to pave the way for equal access for individuals with disabilities in a variety of different activities. Ed never questioned his right to participate in every aspect of life with his family and friends.
Ed was an optimist. He viewed each day as an adventure waiting to unfold. He anticipated joy and laughter would fill his day, and he made it happen for not only himself, but for everyone around him. Ed celebrated the simple pleasures such as Mom’s omelet for breakfast, peanut butter shakes for snack with dad, eating out, time with family and going to Cozy Corner.

Ed was a people lover. No one was a stranger, and everyone was a friend. His handshakes and hugs warmed the soul of everyone he met. No matter where you went with Ed, there was someone who would come up to greet him and share stories of their admiration of and involvement with Ed. He had special friends from Cozy Corner, his outings with Area Residential Care, Goodwill activities, bowling teammates, cohorts at work and his roommates at his group home. He had a special place in his heart for all of his “girlfriends.” He was definitely a ladies’ man.

Ed was a gentle soul. When babies were placed in his arms, he began his magic. He gently stroked their checks and hands and then began to recite his soothing words. He was able to calm even the fussiest baby. When at home in his final days, he never stopped holding the hands of those who were there to comfort him. When the strokes stole his language, he maintained the words, “How are you?” He needed to know that “his people” were ok.

Ed was a model for all of us. We all should strive to live life as Ed did. He was the epitome of goodness and light. Joy exuded from his presence. He never knew judgement of another person, hatred, or prejudice. He leaves behind a legacy of love.

Ed has now joined his father, Sonny; brother-in-law, George Frommelt; grandparents, Edward and Pearl Gerstkamp and Leona Durey; and other family members whom Ed held dear. His love light shines now in heaven, just as it does in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his mother, Ruth Durey, and sisters Chris McCarron, Cathy Ruden, and Candy Frommelt. In addition, Ed was a very proud uncle to eight nieces and nephews and sixteen great nieces and great nephews, all of whom loved him dearly and came to his bedside during his final days. Ed’s two dogs, Huck and Mindy, will be missing their cuddle buddy.
A special thanks to the many medical personnel, Manor Care staff, Hospice team, and extended family members and friends who all shared their love, care and concern with Ed and the entire family as he battled his health challenges. Ed was blessed by each of these individuals.

JoAnn “Joni” Delany

JoAnn “Joni” Delany, 83, formerly of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade, Iowa.

Per Joni’s explicit wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Private family burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road is assisting the family.

Joni was born in Dubuque on January 24, 1935 to Joe and Hazel (Jochum) McQuillen. She married Frank Delany, Jr., on December 26, 1962. He preceded her in death in 2004.
Joni graduated from St. Columkille High School and received her X-Ray training at Mercy Hospital and worked on the staff in that department.

Her next adventure moved her to Chicago, working for Radiologists on Lake Shore Drive. She loved her time in Chicago, often telling many stories. She would often recall the time she rode in a convertible down Michigan Ave. during a snow storm! Another favorite memory was when John F. Kennedy was campaigning for President and she and her girlfriends waited many hours just to shake his hand. After he was nominated, she sent him a congratulatory telegram.

Joni returned to Dubuque and worked for orthopedic surgeons. It was during that time that she met and married Frank Delany, Jr. She and Frank were married for 42 years, before his passing on February 18, 2004. Frank taught and coached at Wahlert High School for many years and the school quickly became their world. The two attended many athletic events and celebrations at the Morocco. In fact, Frank proposed to Joni after a basketball game when Wahlert beat Senior.

One of Joni’s proudest accomplishments was receiving her RN Degree from NICC at the age of 40. She worked at Mercy Hospital for 17 years. Joni’s favorite night out would be dining at the Morocco or Timmermans, anywhere she didn’t have to cook.

Joni was known for generosity in helping her family, friends, and strangers. She will be missed by her brothers and sisters, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the Wahlert High School Frank Delany Scholarship Fund.

Joni is survived by her siblings, Carol Houtakker, Metemora, Illinois, Jim (Sheila) McQuillen, Papillion, Nebraska, Tom (Joyce) McQuillen, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Joe (Corinne) McQuillen, Peosta, Iowa, Sharon (Joe) McAuliffe, Epworth. Along with many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her siblings Dorothy McQuillen, Lois McDermott, Richard McQuillen, Pat McQuillen and Joyce McQuillen.

Joni’s family thanks the staff at Shady Rest Care Center and Riverbend Retirement Community for the great care and kindness shown to her.

Merlyn J. Weidemann

Merlyn J. Weidemann, age 93, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 1:55 p.m., on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at home, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Merlyn’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road, with Rev. Phillip G. Gibbs officiating. To celebrate Merlyn’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Dubuque Post #6.

Merlyn was born on February 5, 1925, in Rickardsville, Iowa, son of John and Susan (Lex) Weidemann.

Merlyn honorably served his country during WWII with the U.S. Army. He was proud of his service and was grateful to have been invited to attend the Honor Flight on October 19, 2010, along with his fellow veterans. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Patricia Wilfawn, on May 10, 1949, at St. Joseph Church in Rickardsville, Iowa, and the two would be blessed with 5 children and 60 wonderful years together, before she was sadly called home ahead of him on February 20, 2010. Merlyn was born and raised in the country, where he learned the value of hard work early on, and he would put that strong work ethic to good use at Farley & Loetscher and finally with the John Deere Dubuque Works as a machinist for 28 years until his retirement. After his retirement, he and Pat would embrace the “snowbird life”, wintering in Texas for 13 years. Merlyn loved being in the great outdoors, and golf was definitely his game of choice, playing in several leagues and taking trips to check out different courses. Merlyn was known to his family as a “Man of Wisdom”, and a “Master of Gadgets & Gizmos”, he was an extremely talented craftsman, making intricate wooden toys and unique display cases to house them throughout the years. Also, as any good Dubuquer does, Merlyn loved a spirited game of Euchre. Merlyn was a faithful member of the Church of the Resurrection, as well as the American Legion Dubuque Post #6, the Foresters and the U.A.W. Retirees. We are deeply saddened at the loss of the patriarch of our family today, but are grateful for the 93 years we have had with him. Merlyn was a wonderful role model of what a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother should be, and we will proudly carry on his lessons for generations to come.

Those left to cherish Merlyn’s memory include

his children,
Jim (Char) Weidemann, Dubuque, IA
