Mark J. Hilby

Mark J. Hilby, 73, of Menominee, IL, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at home.

Per Mark’s request there will be no public services or visitation. Private family burial will be at a later date. The Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque is serving the family.

Mark was born May 30, 1945 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Emil and Florence (Welp) Hilby.

He was a graduate of Wahlert High School, class of 1963. Mark was employed in construction with his brother-in-law, Bill Burroughs and also did maintenance work for Menominee Township. Residents will remember Mark for being in the township snowplow as soon as it started snowing.

Mark was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers and made many trips to Chicago in his van with family and friends.

Surviving are his four siblings, Ione (Ralph) Turman of Seattle, WA, Mary (Paul) Burbach of Cuba City, WI, Joan Hilby of Dubuque, and Jack (Rose) Hilby of Menominee, IL; plus many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Florence, siblings, Robert Hilby, Doris and LaVerne Kuhle, Sister Carol Hilby, OSF, and Marge and Bill Burroughs.

The family wishes to thank the Menominee-Dunleith First Responders, the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office and the Galena Area Ambulance for their quick response.

James J. Brown

James J. “Jim” Brown, 75, of Peosta, Iowa passed away suddenly on January 8, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 14th, 2019 at Holy Family Church, New Melleray with Rev. Rodney Allers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post #6. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 6:45 p.m.

Jim was born on November 24, 1943 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Bernard and Violet (Burkart) Brown.

He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1962 and married Patricia “Pat” Welu on November 8, 1969 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Jim served in the US Army from April 1965 until March of 1967. He earned rank of Specialist 4th Class; he was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska where he conducted test on ammunition.

In 1971 he completed his apprenticeship training in the trade of plumbing. After completing his apprenticeship, he worked as a plumber for 35 years with MMC Mechanical. While working as a plumber he also crop farmed and milked dairy cattle for 40 years on the family farm outside of Dubuque.

After retirement, Jim enjoyed fishing, going for motorcycle rides, winning at the casino and working outside especially in his yard. He volunteered his talents at the National Mississippi river Museum and the Dubuque County Fair Association. Jim was awarded Volunteer of the Year and Friend of the Fair from the Dubuque County Fair Association. Jim was a family man that was supportive in every way possible. He was always willing to lend a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia; his daughters Ann (Steve) Schuster and Beth (Matthew) Oberhoffer; his sister Mary Kay (Bill) Abbott; brother-in-law John “Jack” Welu; and sister-in-law Betty Welu. Jim is also survived by his seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren with one arriving in March along with many nieces, nephews and three Godchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Violet; father and mother-in-law Edward and Loras Welu; two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.

The family would like to thank Epworth Fire and EMS, Dubuque County Sherriff Department and the excellent caring medical staff at Mercy Medical Center.

In lieu of flowers a James Brown memorial fund will be established in his memory.

Joseph N. Thurston

Joseph Norman Thurston, age 91, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 11:35 p.m. on January 8, 2019, at Hawkeye Care Center, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Joe’s life, funeral services will be held at 11:30am, on Saturday, January, 12, 2019, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque, with Deacon John Stierman officiating. To celebrate Joe’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:30am until the time of services at 11:30am, on Saturday at Behr Funeral Home. Military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Entombment will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum at a later date.

Joe was born on November 19, 1927, in Dubuque, IA, son of Joseph E. And Florence C. (Cherrier) Thurston.

Joe served with the US Army during World War II on a Hospital Ship in the European Theater of Operations. He married Elizabeth J. Hennig on Sept. 2, 1950 at St. Mary’s Church. She proceeded him in death on Sept. 16, 1994. He later married Elaine M. (Baker) Meyer on Nov. 6, 2005 at St. Mary’s Church in Dubuque. Joe was formerly employed at the Battery Factory, at Carr, Adams and Collier Mfg. and lastly at the John Deere Dubuque Works, retiring in 1987. He had been a union member since he was 15 years old and was a member of UAW Local #94. Joe was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Parish and was an usher at church since 1949. He was Past Chief Ranger of the Holy Ghost Catholic Order of Foresters, Past Secretary of the Holy Name Society and was the Institutional Representative for the Boy Scouts in Dubuque. Joe was also a member of the Holy Cross Order of Foresters and a past Vice President of the Dubuque County Conservation Society. He was very active in sports and was a softball player for many years, but because of his height, he was often recruited to play basketball. While playing for the Army team Joe was fortunate enough to have played once against the Harlem Globetrotters. He and Elaine enjoyed traveling to Alaska, going to see the Panama Canal and exploring the Northeastern states and New England. Joe loved being outdoors and enjoyed pheasant hunting and was an avid trout fisherman. He was very proud of the fact that he helped to re-stock the wild turkey population in Iowa for the first time.

Bernice E. Mescher

Bernice E. Mescher, 95, of Farley, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 8:07 a.m. at Manor Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa surrounded by loved ones.

Friends and relatives of Bernice may call from 2 to 7 p.m., Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Farley, Iowa, where a Parish Rosary will be held at 1:30 p.m., a CDA Rosary will be held at 4:30 p.m.and the Farley American Legion will meet in a body at 6:00 p.m. Friends may also call after 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 12, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Farley, Iowa with Rev. Michael Schueller presiding. Burial will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Farley, Iowa.

Bernice was born April 5, 1923 in Farley, Iowa, daughter of Sylvester B. and Josephine (Burkle) White. She received her education in the former St. Joseph’s school in Farley, Iowa. Bernice was united in marriage to Gilbert Mescher on February 12, 1946 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Farley, Iowa.

She enjoyed cooking, especially baking pies, gardening, crocheting and traveling. She especially loved spending time with her family. She was a cook at Western Dubuque schools for 23 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Farley a member of its Altar Society and the Farley Catholic Daughters of the America’s-Presentation Court #1460.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Gilbert Mescher of Farley, IA; five children, Janet (Clifford) Splinter of East Dubuque, IL, Bonnie (Tom) Weidemann of Dubuque, IA, Doris (Marty) LaPage of East Dubuque, IL, Larry (Vickie) Mescher of Peosta, IA and Vicky (Ron) Neumann of Independence, IA; 20 grandchildren, Chris (Jamie) Splinter, Eric Splinter, Abbi (Brian) LaPage, Dan (fiance, Christina) Weidemann, Ginger Weidemann, Valli (fiance, Robert) Weidemann, Peggy (friend, Mitch) Weidemann, T.J. Lester J. VonHandorf

Lester J. “Les” VonHandorf, age 86 of Dubuque, formerly of Colesburg, Iowa, completed his earthly journey on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, 3 years to the day that his beautiful bride, Nancy was also called home, at Stonehill Care Center surrounded by his loving family. To celebrate Lester’s life, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Lester’s family.

Lester was born on September 17. 1932, in Greeley, Iowa, a son to Joe and Leona (Rolfes) VonHandorf. After school he joined the U.S. Air Force and went onto honorably serve his country during the Korean War. While still in the service on leave, Lester was united in marriage to the love of his life, Nancy Walters on May 11, 1954 at St. Mary’s Church in Guttenberg, Iowa. They began their new family together while he was stationed in Alaska, where their daughter, Jody was born. They were blessed with 62 years together before Nancy was sadly called to her eternal home on January 8, 2016.

Lester was a hard-working man who faithfully gave over 30 years of his working life to John Deere Dubuque Works. He had moved through many departments over the years, but the final years spent testing engines were definitely some of his favorites out there. He was also very skilled with his hands outside of Deere’s and not only worked the wrenches continually in his garage, but he also remodeled many houses over the years and even felt quite comfortable behind the wheel of a tow truck. Lester made friends very easily and whether you were a co-worker, a neighbor, or a fellow veteran at the American Legion; Lester always had time for a good conversation, a hearty laugh and even a funny jab or two at the guy standing next to him.

But, at the end of the day, Lester was also a committed family man. He loved his wife, adored his daughter, spoiled his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always treasured his cat Buff. His devotion to those he cared for was continually on display through both his words and actions and his unwavering alliance and loyalty to his family and friends will forever be found in the countless memories he leaves behind. We will miss you Lester and thank you for the wonderful example you so unselfishly shared with the world around you throughout your 86 years among us.

Marcella A. Jewett

Marcella A. Jewett, 89, of Dubuque died Monday, January 7, 2019 at Stonehill Care Center.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 pm Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert And Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

Marcella was born October 8, 1929 in Asbury, IA, daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (Schilling) Wernimont.

On November 29, 1947, she married Donald Jewett at St. Philomena’s Church, Asbury, Iowa. They spent 70 years together and traveled the world. He preceded her in death on August 13, 2018.

Growing up after the depression Mom was not a stranger to hard work and instilled that work ethic in her kids. She worked at JC Penny’s for many years, retiring for the last time at the age of 70.

She loved sports and in her early years played softball for the Philomena Peaches. She also enjoyed bowling, jigsaw puzzles and playing cards, especially cribbage and euchre, and playing slot machines. She had a special love of music and enjoyed dancing and playing the piano. She passed this love of music down to her children.

Although she lived in the city, she grew up on a farm in Asbury and never strayed too far from her roots. In summer you might find her picking strawberries at the local strawberry farms and she loved to go to the apple orchards in the fall.

She lived for many years on Hoyt Street in Dubuque where she and Dad raised our family. The Jewett house was the place where all the neighborhood kids would hang out, have bonfires, go to after sledding on Bunker Hill for hot chocolate and enjoy her homemade goodies. She was a fantastic baker and her pies and divinity candy were special treats for everyone.

We will miss her sense of humor, her phone calls to just “check in” on us and special kind of love only a mother can give.

She is survived by eight children, Shirley Hansberger of Memphis, TN, Dave (Sandy) Jewett of Asbury, IA, Steve (Linda Locher) Jewett of Asbury, IA, Gail Wilkinson of Davenport, IA, Helen (Bob) Gednalski of Asbury, IA, Bill (Julie Wilhelm) Jewett of Sun Prairie, WI, Dan (Susan) Jewett of Gloucester, VA, and Trish (Phil Brennan) Jewett of Dubuque; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and two brothers in law, Mel Lolwing and Jim (Joan) Jewett.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 11 siblings.

Josephine L. Courchane

Josephine L. Courchane, fondly known as “Friday”, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the age of 99, just shy of her much anticipated 100th Birthday. She was a resident of Oak Crest Manor Nursing Home in Dyersville.

Visitation will be held from 9 – 10 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2019, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, Iowa followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m.

Born in Kimberly, Wisconsin on January 25, 1919, Friday was the third oldest of 11 children of John and Martina (Van Beek) Kneepkens. She was the widow of Kenneth Arps, who was killed August 16, 1944, in France. Friday is also widowed by Donald H. (D.H.) Courchane.

After retiring as a manager from Prince Castle in Rockford, IL. in 1981, she and D.H. moved to Florida where she, after becoming bored in retirement, worked for Nabisco as a retail specialist. Don died on March 10, 1988. She retired a second time in 1990, and returned to Rockford to live in the Luther Center where, for seven years, she served on the residents’ council activity committee.

Friday’s real passion was helping others. At the Luther Center she spearheaded an annual fundraiser for 13 years to provide Christmas gifts and food for needy families. She gave time and talent to the senior advisory board for Patriots’ Gateway and to the program development council for Lifescape by whom she was named the Super Senior in 2008. As a devoted Catholic, she was active in her church as well.

Friday loved to stay busy. She was always working hard with her hands on ceramics, embroidery or, in her later years, adult coloring books. She was an excellent bowler and continued to play Wii bowling until her death. Her cookies and candy were the highlight of the family’s Christmas and Easter seasons until she was no longer able to make the surprises.

Even in the nursing home she loved to help with mailings and be involved. Friday rarely missed an opportunity to take part in activities provided for the residents from bingo to word games.

She was the loving mother to Virginia Arps (John) Lopiccolo of Columbia, SC, Vicki (Marv) Maiers of Dyersville and Gregory (Ann) Courchane of Palm Harbor, FL. She was Gram to six grandchildren and Great Gram to seventeen great grandchildren. In addition, Friday is also survived by two brothers: John and Don Kneepkens, one sister, Birdie (Phil) Bouressa and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and both husbands, Friday was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.

The family would like to thank the staff at Oak Crest Manor for their loving care and support. She said that she could not have been happier anywhere else.

Darlene M. Vorwald

Darlene M. Vorwald, 81, of Dyersville, Iowa, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2019 at 9:45 p.m. surrounded by her family at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Friends and relatives of Darlene may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m., Friday January 11th at the funeral home. Services for Darlene will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville, Iowa with Rev. Dennis Quint Presiding. Concelebrating will be Rev. Aloysius Vorwald. Burial will be held in St. Francis Cemetery in Dyersville, Iowa.

Darlene was born September 25, 1937 in Farley, Iowa, daughter of Bernard and Bernice (Oberfoell) Breitbach. She is a graduate of the Epworth High School. On May 14, 1957 she was united in marriage to Wilfred Vorwald at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Epworth, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 16, 2004.

She was employed in the office at John Deere Dubuque Works prior to her marriage. After her marriage to Wilfred the couple raised their family and worked the farm together between Dyersville and Farley, Iowa until their retirement where they moved to Dyersville.

She enjoyed many activities, fishing, picnics, playing slot machines and working with her flower gardens. She was an avid sports enthusiast, she especially enjoyed the Hawkeyes football games. She was very proud of and loved her grandchildren and family. One of Darlene’s lifelong dreams was to visit Mt. Rushmore which she was able to do in 2016.

She is a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Dyersville.

She is survived by five daughters, Lynn (Bob) Lucas of Worthington, IA, JoAnn (Mike) Besler of Epworth, IA, Donna (Mike) Loeffelholz of Dyersville, IA, Karen Rave of Farley, IA and Julie Vorwald of Dubuque, IA; 3 sons, Louis (Catherine) Vorwald of Dubuque, IA, Kenny (Lynn) Vorwald of Petersburg, IA, and Mark Vorwald of Las Vegas, Nevada; 21 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; six siblings, Gene (Rosie) Breitbach of Farley, IA, Betty (Paul) Theisen of Epworth, IA, Mary Westermeyer of Dubuque, IA, Eldon (Mary) Breitbach of Marion, IA, Melinda (Robert) Steffen of Bernard, IA and Sharon (Ron) Schaul of Farley, IA; a sister-in-law, Ethel Vorwald of Placid, IA; and one brother-in-law, Rev. Aloysius Vorwald of Dyersville, IA.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Gary Rave; a brother, Jerry (Mary) Breitbach; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Vorwald, Gary Westermeyer and Rosemary (Thomas) Strang; and two nephews, Mike Vorwald and Steve Vorwald.

Raymond W. Miller

Raymond W. “Ray” Miller, 90, of Monmouth, Iowa, passed away on Monday morning, January 7, 2019, at his home in Monmouth, Iowa.

Friends and family may gather for One Last Party® in remembrance of “Ray” on Friday, January 11, 2019, from 5 to 7 P.M. in “The Bistro” at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Cremation has taken place and a private family burial will be held at the Hickory Grove Cemetery, rural Monmouth, Iowa.

Raymond William Miller was born on October 1, 1928 in Moravia, Iowa, to William and Rose (Byers) Miller. His early years were spent in Iowa, and then his family moved to Colorado where he attended school. Upon his father’s death, his family returned to Iowa. He married Lela Jane Carr Houston on August 30, 1958 in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

“Ray” had worked as an operator lineman for many years for IBEW out of Rock Island from 1968 until retirement and also during his working years he served as the Monmouth Town Marshall for several years. In retirement, he worked for the Franzen Family Used Tractors and the City of Monmouth.

He enjoyed mowing the lawn and being outdoors, taking care of his dog Buttons as well as helping other people with their dogs, helping out friends and family when needed, and scratch off lottery tickets.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Mike Miller of Maquoketa, IA, and Christy (Brian) Schmidt of Andrew, IA; step-children, Kenny Houston of Monmouth, IA, and Sandy Christoffersen of Monmouth, IA; 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Orville Miller of Cummings, IA, and Wilfred “Red” Miller of Omaha, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, half-siblings Edgar, Bill, Charles, Alice, Dorothy and one in infancy, brothers James, Willard and Wilbur, and his wife Jane on February 2, 2002.

Margaret Jewell Grimes

Margaret Jewell (Nesselroad) Grimes, age 98, of Luther Manor, was called home peacefully at 12:20 a.m., on Monday, January 7, 2019, at Luther Manor. To honor Jewell’s life, funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, on Friday, January 11, 2019, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque, with Rev. Dianne Grace officiating. Family and friends may visit from 10:30 a.m., until time of service, on Friday, January 11, 2019, at Behr Funeral Home. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens.

Jewell, to all who knew and loved her, was a special daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa on April 22, 1920, to Charles Raymond and Alma Pansy Andrews Nesselroad of Valley Junction, Iowa, in what is now West Des Moines.

She grew up in rural Dallas County where she attended grade school. She attended high school in Waukee, graduating in 1938. She met the love of her life, Clarence Robert “Bud” Grimes, at a dance in Van Meter. He was in the Army, stationed at Ft. Des Moines. They married on December 31, 1940 while living in Des Moines until WWII began. He was then transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri where in a small town, Houston, Mo., their family began with the birth of their first daughter, Margaret Ann “Maggie” in 1942. When Bud was preparing for war in the Pacific, they made a home in California for a time. With Bud’s activation to the Pacific and a small child to care for, Jewell returned to Iowa for the duration of the war. A second child, Mary Lee, was born in 1946. Bud served in Japan as part of the Occupation Forces following the war. Their third daughter, Patricia Marie, was born there 1949. Upon their return to the US, Bud was stationed in Ft. Benning, Georgia, where he was assigned until the Korean Conflict took him to war once again. Jewell returned to Waukee with the girls during that time. Following the war, they lived in Oklahoma, Colorado and twice in Germany until after 22 years of military service, Bud retired. Soon after they returned to their roots in Iowa.

Jewell was a loving wife and mother with the inner strength that led her from a young wife to an independent woman who was able to raise her children on her own during various times throughout Bud’s service which required crossing the country and the ocean with 3 children. She was tough, and that toughness saw her through the aftermath of a terrible crash in 1989 that nearly took her 30 years too soon. She and Bud were a team! We fondly called them “attached at the hip.” They became managers at Stuckey’s Pecan Shops where she managed the snack bar and he ran the gas station and shop. They dealt with tornadoes, snow storms, needy families that always got a helping hand, but they were together. They moved to Dubuque in the late 70’s where they lived at various locations between winter stays in Arizona for many years until they moved to an assisted living community before Bud passed away in 2006. Jewell’s final move was to Luther Manor where she lived out her final years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and daughter, Maggie Chase, her sister, Dorine (Howard) O’Brien of Dubuque, two brothers, Richard (Mildred) Nesselroad of Waukee, IA and Thomas (Leota) Nesselroad of Bettendorf, IA, sons-in-law, Robert Chase and Robert Ivers.

Jewell’s family would like to thank the entire staff at Luther Manor and Hospice of Dubuque for the excellent, compassionate care of Jewell and her family.

Roger L. Oberbroeckling

Roger L. Oberbroeckling died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, January 4, 2019.

A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 11 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Nashville, Tennessee. Visitation was held from 10 AM until 10:30 at which time there was a Rosary Service. Interment followed in Historic Spring Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, A Nashville landmark since 1785 “Where Nashville Comes to Remember”

He was born on April 15th 1938 in Dubuque, Iowa to Lavata (Roussel) and Henry C. Oberbroeckling.

Roger was a long time resident of Dubuque, Iowa and worked for 30 years for John Deere. He retired to Hendersonville, Tennessee in 1989 and worked 10 years for Anchor Wire.

Roger is survived by his children, Laura Morrison (Craig), Larry Oberbroeckling (Pat), Roger D. Oberbroeckling, Beverly Oberbroeckling, Connie Johnston (Duane), John Oberbroeckling, 10 grandchildren and his sister, Arlene Mesch (Clem) of Tucson, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Geraldine A (Sides) and his brother, Arnold F. Oberbroeckling.

Bernadine M. (Wagner) Bleile

Bernadine M. (Wagner) Bleile, age 99, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 3:17 p.m., on Saturday, January, 5, 2019, at home, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Bernadine’s life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, January 10, 2019, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue, with Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman officiating. To celebrate Bernadine’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:30 a.m., until the time of services at 11:00a.m., on Thursday, January 10, 2019, at the church. Entombment will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.

Bernadine was born on October 14, 1919, in Sherrill, Iowa, daughter of John and Lucy (Schmitt) Wagner.

Bernadine was born and raised in the Sherrill area, where she would attend school, before eventually making Dubuque her lifelong home. She was a hard worker and was employed for 5 years at General Dry Battery, before happily becoming a full time wife, mother and homemaker. Bernadine was united in marriage to Herbert Bleile, on October 21, 1939, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Sherrill. The two would be blessed with 2 loving children, and 59 years together, before Herbert was sadly called home before her on January 19, 1999. Bernadine and Herbert were a very active couple, who were often found out and about, “cutting a rug”, at weekly dances held at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds. They also enjoyed discovering and visiting new places together and were extremely proud of the fact that they had visited all 50 states, as well as several countries abroad. Family, however, truly brought the greatest joy into Bernadine’s days, and she loved any opportunity to spend time with Lisa, Loras, and eventually the grandchildren, always sure to make every occasion special and memorable.
Bernadine was a very creative individual, an excellent seamstress and an accomplished quilter. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles on her own, but really looked forward to beating the pants off of her children and grandchildren in a heated game of Scrabble. Bernadine took much pride in keeping up her home and would often look for things to do to keep busy. We feel very blessed to have had 99 years to enjoy the gift of our dynamic Bernadine, and we will miss you more than you will ever know. We take comfort in knowing that you are now at peace in Heaven.

Germaine A. Hense

Germaine A. “Geri” Hense, 95, of Dubuque, IA, passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, January 11, 2019 at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque, with Fr. Dean Smith officiating. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is 3 – 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, where the parish scripture service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Germaine was born on July 8, 1923 near Potosi, Wisconsin, the daughter of Joseph P. and Hildegard (Pickel) Margan. She married Arthur E. Hense on November 23, 1944 at St. Patrick’s Church in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on March 20, 1992.

Geri attended St. Joseph’s Academy, the Mercy School of Nursing and the University of Dubuque. She was employed as an R.N. and educator at The Finley Hospital for 25 years, retiring in 1987.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and its Altar & Rosary Society in East Dubuque, St. Joseph Academy Alumni, Mercy School of Nursing Alumni, Catholic Mothers Study Club-St. Cecelia Circle, A.C.C.W. and the American Red Cross.

Surviving is a son, Kevin A. (Mary) Hense, two grandsons, Craig and Brett Hense all of Destin, Florida; her siblings, Celine Knockel, Lorraine “Lovey” Webb both of Dubuque, JoAnn Stash of Huntington Beach, CA, Eleanor (Donald) Frederick of Bellwood, IL, June Margan of Hanover, IL, and Joseph (Grace) Margan of Dubuque; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Geri was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arthur E. Hense, and siblings and inlaws, Erma (Alfred) Kerkenbush, Walter Knockel, Eugene Webb, Michael Stash, Lloyd (Vivian) Margan, and Milton “Butch” (Ursula) Margan, John, Eileen, Darcus and Carol Margan.

In lieu of flowers, a Germaine A. “Geri” Hense memorial fund has been established.

Lyda M. Herrig

Lyda M. Herrig, 92, of Dubuque, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, at Church of the Nativity, where Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Msgr. James Miller will officiate. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, LaMotte, following the luncheon. Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Lyda was born February 11, 1926 in Bellevue, the daughter of Alex and Bernice (Pollock) Berthel. She married Merlin Herrig on August 24, 1948 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Andrew, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 29, 2006.

Lyda graduated from University of Dubuque, and started her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse near LaMotte. Throughout the years, she taught in LaMotte and Key West. Lyda and Merlin raised their family on a farm near LaMotte.

She was an avid bingo and card player, and volunteered as a 4-H leader. Lyda was a member of Nativity Parish.

Lyda is survived by her children Phyllis (Tim) Chantos of Dewitt, IA, Marilyn (Mel) Berendes of Dubuque, and Don Herrig of Dubuque; six grandchildren, Chad (Nancy) Berendes of Dubuque, Mike (Julie) Berendes of Zionsville, IN, Brad (Misty) Herrig of Iowa City, Jeff Herrig of LeClaire, WI, Chris (Amie) Chantos of Davenport, IA, and Jill (Alex) Noel of LaHonda, CA; 16 great grandchildren; her brother, Donald (Pat) Berthel of LaMotte; two sisters, Mary Lou Mottet of Cedar Rapids, IA and Algean Nemmers of Bellevue; and a sister in law, Evelyn (Merlin) Lenz of Dubuque.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kimberly Herrig; a granddaughter in law, Kristi Berendes; and two brothers in law, George Mottet and Virgil Nemmers.

C.H. “Bud” Nesbitt, 86, of rural Apple River, IL, passed away at 11:25 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. IA.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home in Scales Mound, IL, with Rev. Mark Oehlert officiating. Burial will be in Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Cemetery, Schapville, IL, where military honors will be accorded by members of Berryman-Doran-Bainbridge V.F.W. Post # 5300 of Hanover. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Scales Mound.

Bud was born on June 4, 1932 near Savanna, IL, the son of Earl E. and Lucile C. (Householder) Nesbitt. He was a graduate of Savanna High School, class of 1951. Bud was united in marriage to Neva Boldt on May 3, 1952 in Savanna. She preceded him in death on July 21, 2009.

Bud was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving during the Korean Conflict. He and Neva formerly operated “The Place Bar” in Scales Mound from 1972 to 1976. He later operated the Hanover Lumber Company until his retirement. Bud drove school bus for the Scales Mound School District and was a teacher’s assistant in construction trades for the Jo Daviess County Vocational School.

He was an Eagle Scout, and a lifetime member of the Hanover V.F.W. Post and the Savanna Moose Club. Bud was also an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan.

Surviving are two daughters, Karlene “Karlie” White of Apple River and Kathy (Terry) Arnold of Cedar Rapids, IA, 2 grandsons, Jason and Tyler Arnold, 3 step-grandchildren, 2 great-granddaughters, Emma and Eila, and 9 step great-grandchildren; siblings, Larry Nesbitt of Rock Falls, Karen Nesbitt of Sandwich, Dale Nesbitt of California, Ronald Nesbitt of North Aurora, and Vicki Gibson of Cuba City, WI; and very special friend Dorena “Dee” Menzemer of Hazel Green, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Neva, son-in-law, Bill White, grandson Andrew Nesbitt, step great-grandchild, Trent Edwards, and sister, Pattie Parkinson.
