William E. Bastian

William E. Bastian (Bill) 74, died peacefully on Sunday, July 28 with his family beside him. Bill was the son of Elaine and Harold Bastian. He was born in Kenosha, WI, and lived much of his life with his wife, Linda, and children in Eden Prairie, MN.

Bill had a gregarious and magnetic personality and was loved by many people. He left us with many great memories.

Although things did not always come easily, Bill persevered with hard work. He had a long and successful career in sales management with Pillsbury and Growing Healthy, finally retiring from E.A. Sween, Deli Express. His career provided many long-lasting friendships.

As a self taught hobbyist, Bill engaged us in his current endeavors. He would tackle any project from welding to tractor repair, but had a special love for boating, woodworking, and maple syrup making. We will remember him piloting his boat on Balsam Lake or in his shop creating, fixing, or tinkering. Bill was happy when he was “doing” and was very precise about his process.

Bill was a dreamer who centered his life around his family. He was always looking forward to the next family vacation and enthusiastically preparing food to bring us all together. He prioritized keeping his family united in support of each other.

Bill is survived by his dance partner and wife, Linda; children Amanda (Jason), Hillary (Brian), Corrie (Amber), Jon (Colleen), and Zack (Shelby); grandchildren Sylvia, Sullivan, Osa, Finley, Rayla, Ike, Colton, Roma, Rita, and Ivy; siblings Bette (Dick), Debbie (Jon), Mary (Gene), and Jane (Ron); and numerous extended family members.

Please join us on August 20th for a Funeral Mass at 11AM with a 1-hour visitation beforehand at Pax Christi Catholic Church: 12100 Pioneer Trail, Eden Prairie. A Celebration of Life Gathering will immediately follow from 12PM-3PM at Bearpath Golf Club: 18100 Bearpath Trail, Eden Prairie. Please bring some memories to share.

Bill was a 9 year survivor of pancreatic cancer following a pioneering surgery by Dr. Mark Truty at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He also received loving care at the end of his life from Our Lady of Peace Hospice in St Paul, MN. We are forever grateful.

Gary Pfohl

Gary “Grease Monkey, Harvey, Papa, Pops” Pfohl of Dubuque, IA passed on to another adventure on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024, surrounded by his loud and loving family after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer.

Gary was born to Delbert and Helen (Winders) Pfohl on January 21st, 1951. He attended Dubuque Senior High School, begrudgingly, and entered the workforce early in life. Gary briefly worked at NAPA Auto Parts, then moved on to be an auto mechanic at Herbst Auto Service for a majority of his working life. Gary was well-known to be an outstanding mechanic who could fix anything. He was a “jack of all trades” and a master of all! He enjoyed woodworking as well, and continuously had several friends ask him to help in the building and renovating of their homes and businesses. When Gary was ready for something new, he moved on to work at J & J Tree Service, as well as J & J Pool, Spa, & Billiards. Between then and full retirement, he was found bartending and providing maintenance for various local places when they needed an extra hand. Gary had a hard time sitting still, and even up until the end, he was visually and audibly fixing things and servicing vehicles in his sleep.

In 1971, Gary married LuAnn Noel and had three perfect-ish daughters. Their first glimpse at perfection was Brenda (Jeremy) Duvel. Brenda brought two beautiful blessings into Gary’s life, Ryan (Courtney Westphal) Konrardy and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Konrardy. Next came the cliché middle child, Kelly “Tunie” (Jeremy-not the same one as Brenda) Giesemann. Tunie blessed Gary with three grandkids over the course of three decades, Alidia Mickelson, Kyrah Pfohl, and the most recent joy, Knox Giesemann. Finally, Gary and LuAnn had their third child, Julie Pfohl, who continues to be their favorite despite her moving over a thousand miles away. They later divorced but continued to partner together in trying to manage their adult daughters.

Gary met Teresa (Delaney) Pfohl in August of 2001 and began another wonderful chapter of his life. Teresa and Gary loved to spend as much time together as possible, and even took joy in coordinating their outfits, which his family lovingly enjoyed mocking. They had a wonderful time going on road cruises until they would get lost, although Teresa always knew her Mister Man would find their way home. On many of those cruises, they would seek out waterfalls, which Gary thoroughly enjoyed watching, as in a sense, he was always chasing them…the metaphor fits. Gary and Teresa also cherished spending some time during the winter in Florida, by Julie, where the drinking establishments flourished in their presence. Gary and Teresa were married June 28, 2016 and continued to love having their time together.

Gary was known to live life his own way. While his earlier years included more dangerous activities, such as driving a vehicle across the Mississippi River during a winter day, his later years included more peaceful, but fulfilling ventures. Over the years, Gary was an active member in the Dubuque Boat Club and the Loyal Order of the Moose. Gary very much enjoyed taking rides by the river in a quest to find bald eagles, and one time relished in the fact that he and Teresa counted over 300 by Frentress Lake. He also was a great baker, largely due to the fact that he had a monstrous sweet tooth and would bake another batch of cookies, despite the fact that he already had a counter full of other cookies. While Teresa was more of the cook, he was even able to teach her a few new recipes. You could also often catch Gary singing his favorite tunes at many establishments, where everyone there would beg him to sing his classic “Elvis” songs. Gary also always cherished his times camping with all of his campground buddies. Many would come to his campfire to have a cocktail and hear the endless “Gary” jokes, as his mission was always to make everyone laugh and have a good time. He guaranteed that good time when he would break out his guitar and gut bucket to have some good ol’ singalongs around the fire.

Above all, Gary was far more caring than it may have seemed. What we really want people to remember is that he would help anyone at a drop of a hat. There were countless times when he would drop what he was doing to help a person in need; and many times, that person was a complete stranger. Whether it was helping them with their car, or helping them move something, he was wanting to help. His caring was most exemplified by the way he welcomed far more than his three girls into his home. It is a well-known fact that the magnet on the refrigerator that read “This is the home to 3 beautiful girls” would change to 4, then 5, and so on, as he loved and cared for so many of his daughter’s misfit friends and always made them know that they were welcome and safe in his home as well. Gary would be so patient with all of the girls taking over his house, but that may have contributed to why he spent so much time working in the garage.

In addition to his fun-filled family, other people left to carry on his memories are his sister Juanita (Don) Herbst, his brother Paul (Susan) Pfohl, his sister-in-law Nancy Pfohl, and their families. He also left behind six sisters-in-law: Jeri Jahries, Katie Wolbers, Jeannie Kerr, Sue Donley, Doris Dawson, and Mary Ingle and their families.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard Pfohl, as well as two sisters-in-law: Patricia Delaney and Connie Maiers, and three brothers-in-law: Joe Delaney, James Delaney, and John Delaney.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all of the wonderful healthcare professionals at the Intensive Care Unit, as well as the Cardiovascular Unit at MercyOne Hospital in Dubuque. The care that Gary and his family received during his final days was very supportive and exceptional.

Per Gary’s wishes, a party for his life will take place at the Dubuque Moose Lodge 355 on Sunday, August 25th. Family and friends may stop by anytime between 2 and 8 pm. A short dedication to Gary will occur at 5 pm, followed by some karaoke and dancing. The family is grateful for Tri-State Cremation Center for their help in coordinating Gary’s after-life care.

Online condolences for Gary’s family may be left at www.tristatecremationcenter.com

Floyd P. Bennett

Floyd P. Bennett, age 70, Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on August 1, 2024, at Dubuque Specialty Care, while surrounded by his loving family.  To honor Floyd’s life, a private graveside service will be held at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Floyd’s family.

Floyd was born on January 11, 1954, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Floyd B. and Violet (Baker) Bennett. He was truly blessed to be one of the good one’s in this life and never had a foul word, or complained about anything, even when it would have easily been justified.  Floyd made the world a better place simply by his presence within it and was so simultaneously humble that he would never have even acknowledged that fact in words, thoughts, or actions.  Floyd was naturally gifted in the kitchen and spent his working career as a cook.  He invested over twenty years with Bishop’s Buffet until they closed and then went on to spend another 14 years at the Diamond Jo Casino.  He enjoyed creating delicious meals for others to savor and made countless friends along the way as well.

Floyd was known for his belly laugh and silly jokes for those who were near him most.  His humor was contagious while his timing and delivery were impeccable.  If Floyd was happy, those around him were soon to be also.  He was also a devoted black belt in Tae Kwon Do and spent countless hours as a teacher at the Dubuque Karate Club sharing his skills and knowledge with others.  Floyd was also a devoted uncle who faithfully and patiently waited for the weekend to arrive where you could be sure to find him treating his nieces and nephews out to a movie and treats whenever possible.  His love for games of all sorts, especially cards, was also legendary.  Never taking life too seriously, but always ready for a little friendly competition with anyone who was willing to pull a chair up to the table to test his abilities on any given day.  Simply put, the world is a much lesser place today without Floyd’s light shining around those who knew and loved him.  We will miss him dearly, remember him fondly, and will never forget the positive influence he has been on everyone who crossed his path.  Thank you, Floyd, for keeping life uncomplicated and bringing your best to each day as it presents itself.  May you find peace now in the loving arms of your Savior as we await our eternal reunion in time.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Floyd include,

his siblings,
Irene (Bill) Jackson, Dubuque, IA,
Nancy Funk, Dubuque, IA,
Phillip Bennett, Iowa City, IA,
and Beth Bennett, Iowa City, IA;

seven nieces and nephews;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Pat Bennett and Georgia (Paul) Olds.

Floyd’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Dubuque Specialty Care for all of their professional and compassionate care.

Elizabeth A. Boland

Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Boland, 87, passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2024, after a life filled with service to others.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Nativity. Funeral Mass for Betty will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, IA is assisting the family.

Betty was born on August 31, 1936, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of John & Clara (Honkomp) Kohnen. She graduated from St. Columbkille’s High School in Dubuque and then worked typing insurance claims at Medical Associates. She met her best friend and love of her life, Anthony C.  (Tony) Boland through a blind date set up by her friend Marlene, who was married to Tony’s brother Jack. They married on September 14, 1963. They celebrated 60 years together as husband and wife before Tony preceded her in death on October 23, 2023. They welcomed two children into their lives, Marianne (Ken) Fiedler, and David (Lisa) Boland. Betty became a full-time mom upon the birth of their daughter. Through the years she also was an in-home daycare provider and worked as a paraprofessional for the Dubuque Community School District.

Betty was the ultimate caregiver. She was a woman who loved fiercely and prayed even harder. A friend once told her that “A stranger is only a friend you haven’t met yet”. Betty embraced that philosophy and made friends wherever she went. If a friend or family member needed help, Betty would volunteer, or she’d volunteer Tony. Betty faced her ultimate care-giving challenge when caring for Tony as he battled dementia. When things got tough, she’d repeat two quotes: “Nothing has changed but my attitude, consequently, everything has changed”, and “A happy person is not a person with a certain set of circumstances, but a certain set of attitudes.” Betty believed in the power of prayer and spent countless hours praying the rosary for her family and anyone who came up in her card basket. If you ever sent Betty a card, your name came up in her basket and she prayed for you. She also spent time each week in the Power of Prayer Chapel. She and Tony attended daily mass from the time their daughter was diagnosed with cancer until health issues prohibited their attendance.

Celebrating the life of this loving woman are her daughter Marianne (Ken) Fiedler, her son David (Lisa) Boland, grandsons Jacob (Megan), & Josh (Stephanie Dahl) Fiedler, & Maximus Boland; granddaughter Callie Boland; and great-grandson, Colter Fiedler, with a great-granddaughter due in September. She is also survived by Tony’s brother & sister-in-law Barney & Char Boland, and sisters-in-law Marianne Boland, Dolly Boland, Charlotte Boland, Shirley Boland, and Lois Boland, as well as numerous nieces & nephews, including a very special goddaughter, Anne Marie (Randy) Hoeger. Betty leaves behind countless friends she met through the Tri-State Travelers camping club, the dementia support groups at Resurrection & Stonehill, the grief support group at Hospice of Dubuque, Nativity Church, and the community at The Woodlands Senior Living Apartments.

In addition to her husband Tony, she was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws Joseph & Fern Boland, her siblings Janet (Warren) Bunker, Harold (Elizabeth) Kohnen, John Jr. (Pearl) Kohnen, and Marcella (Sally) (Harold) Richey; nieces Karolyn Tucker & Sherri Gieseman and nephews Karl Kohnen & Kevin Kohnen.

As we remember Betty, more quotes come to mind: “As long as we’re here, we might as well see it” and “If you can read, you can do anything.” To honor her memory, we encourage you see something new, read a book, make a new friend, or do something nice for someone. Above all, “Count your blessings, of which you have many.” Donations in her memory can be made to Birthright of Dubuque, Dubuque County Right to Life, or a charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank Unity Point Finley Hospital 5th floor staff for their caring and concern for Betty and her whole family.

Shirley M. Gradl

We lost a beautiful soul today. Shirley M. Gradl passed from her earthly life on July 28, 2024, to join her loving husband in heaven. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, IL, where friends may call after 10 AM until the time of service. The burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.

Mom was born in Chicago on 08/09/1927 to Mary Louise Tinsman and Clifford R. Brown. A brother, Richard, and a younger sister, Wilma, rounded out the family.  In 1942, at the age of 14, she met the man who was to be her husband for 73 years until his death. She met Robert “Bob” Gradl, “cute,” as they say in Hollywood. She and a girlfriend were walking down The Avenue (Michigan) in Roseland when rain started pouring down.  Being teenage girls, they just hopped into an unoccupied car parked at the curb to wait it out. When he returned to his car, Bob was surprised (to say the least) to find these two trespassers. They continued to bump into each other around the neighborhood over the next few years. When the war broke out, Bob joined the Army Air Corps. They corresponded throughout the years he was away and, upon discharge, were married on June 29, 1946.  This is when she would say her REAL life started. On June 18, 1947, she gave birth to Bonnie. Fourteen months later, a boy, Daniel, showed up. Another daughter, Valerie, came along in 1952.

Our young family moved to Dolton, Illinois, where we lived and prospered for many years. Mom was active in Dolton’s Junior Women’s Club and was instrumental in building the library there. She worked with the PTA every year her kids were in school, the Girl Scouts in the 50’s, and was a sponsor of Mai Kai, a Tri-High-Y girls club in the 60’s. She loved children and teens and had fond memories of all who passed through her life, no matter how briefly.

Our mother was a voracious reader, reading everything cover to cover, whether it be magazines, newspapers, or books. In Mom’s later years, slot machines became a source of enjoyment. She loved everything about it. The sounds smell and striking up conversations with people.  While a jackpot would have been a bonus, it wasn’t necessary for a successful day.

After her family had grown and started families of their own, Mom and Dad moved to the Galena Territory. She and her dad participated in various activities in the Territory, such as bowling, Vultures, and all social functions, and they made many friends.  All who met her loved her. She was FUN and VERY FUNNY. Mom was an extraordinary, ordinary woman.

Shirley leaves behind her son, Daniel and Joyce Gradl of Carmel, Indiana, and two daughters, Valerie Williams of Homewood, IL, and Bonnie and John Swedler of Galena and Sun City West, Arizona. Seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

We want to thank Doctor Mary Koenigs for many years of care and Father Howard, who helped Mom fulfill her lifelong wish to become a Catholic. Also, the original Lunch Bunch of ThunderBay3 (occasionally known as the “Winos”) (you know who you are) for all the laughs. She never forgot you.

Peter F. Pfohl

Peter Frank Pfohl, age 70, of Dubuque, went to meet our Lord at 5:09 p.m., on Monday, July 29, 2024, at Sunnycrest Manor.  To honor Peter’s life, family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., on Friday, August 2, 2024, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m., on Friday at the funeral home, with Deacon Steve Whiteman officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Born September 28, 1953, the son of Joseph P. and Margaret Ann (Schueller) Pfohl, and beloved brother of Mary (Pfohl) Kisting, Peter suffered an accidental deprivation of oxygen at birth.  Despite being mentally handicapped, Peter lived an exemplary life glorifying our Lord with an infectious smile and gentle demeanor towards everyone he met.  Despite his inability to speak, Pete and his sister Mary communicated to one another effectively the special love they shared.  Mary understood better than anyone what Peter’s needs and desires were and she spent her entire life advocating for Pete’s care.  Pete was well aware his sister made it her mission in life to smooth life’s roads for Peter’s journey in this world.  He surely felt that love and enjoyed every minute spent with her.

Through our pain of loss we’re left to imagine the magnificent moment Pete now has in Paradise to speak to his mom and dad.

As a youngster growing up in the country, Pete loved animals, toy trucks, and most anything mechanical.  He understood how to use his hand’s dexterity and loved to take things apart.

Those left to cherish Peter’s memory include

his sister and brother-in-law,
Mary and Kevin Kisting, Dubuque, IA;

a niece and a nephew,
Karen and Wesley (Anna) Kisting;

and many cousins.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents.

Peter’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Sunnycrest for their kindness and the wonderful care and friendship they have provided these past years.  Their gentle care and positive attitude made a huge difference in Peter’s life.

Memorials would be appreciated in Peter’s memory to the Sunnycrest Manor Auxiliary Fund, 2375 Roosevelt Street, Dubuque, IA 52001 or to the Dubuque Humane Society, 4242 Chavenelle Road, Dubuque, IA 52002.
