Nobody could do that job as well as him! He retired on August 1, 2001.

He was a Godly man and lived each day looking for ways to bless others. Even during his last days with us, he was more concerned with the feelings of others than with his own pain. Words cannot express how much his presence will be missed, and the Sunday dinners at his house where he loved to say, “Every day’s a holiday, every meal’s a feast!” I think we would all agree that he made the best fudge ever. Our world will be forever changed, but he is now rejoicing in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

At an early age, Kate started as a volunteer at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque and as an asset at the University of Iowa pediatric mobile clinics, which was held at Mercy.
She proudly followed in her father’s footsteps and served in the Dubuque Police Auxiliary for several years.
Kate was also ready and willing to help families with children’s special needs. She thrived on caring for them. She often cared for very medically fragile children in order to provide respite for their parents. As a dental assistant, she often could be found assisting children after working hours with broken mouth braces, etc.
Kate lost a dear friend of hers several years ago because of a drunk driver, so Kate readily made herself available to be a designated driver to whomever needed a safe ride home.
Kate was very talented with crafted creations and often supplemented her income by selling her beautiful crafts.
Kate is survived by her husband, Christopher Grant, and her three sons who were her pride and joy: Jacob, Logan and Riley Dean. She is also survived by her mother, Linda Van Natta, a sister, Lori (Bill Hirsch) Holzer, a brother, Scott (Rachel)Van Natta, several nieces and nephews: Mallory, Owen and Allison Morris, Caleb Van Natta, and Chase and Lyla Van Natta. She is also survived by her aunt Nancy Eisbach, and her uncle Gary and aunt Betty Noel, and her godmother Kris Chapman. Also surviving are her stepchildren: Abigail Tochi, Kelly (Brittney) Grant, Mason (Amber) Grant, Rylee (Nicholas) Dunkel and stepgrandchildren Maline Tochi, Kayden Grant, and Audrey Grant. She will also be missed by her loving little puppy Ziggy.
She is preceded in death by her father Larry, brother Tony Van Natta, grandparents Florence and Charles Noel, Reoa Van Natta, Cal Holzer, Uncle Pete Eisbach, as well as many other aunts and uncles and loving cousins.
The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Kate was affectionally called Mrs. Magoo by her family. Fly high, Mrs, Magoo and make Heaven an even better place!
The family would like to thank the Dubuque Police Department, Chaplain Jeff Durham, Dubuque Fire Department and EMS, and Kate’s loving neighbors for their assistance Sunday night.
Memorials may be made to the Kate Dean Family Memorial Fund at Ducapo Community Credit Union.
