Michael J. Birkett

Michael “Mike” J. Birkett, a lifelong resident of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away at UnityPoint Finley Hospital, on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

Friends and family may visit from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on May 1, 2026, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Military Honors will be accorded by the Iowa Army National Guard and the American Legion Post #6.

Mike was born on June 7, 1956, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Joan Zwack and Paul Birkett. He grew up alongside his brothers, David, Greg, and later Cris (Purcell). He attended St. Anthony’s and graduated from Hempstead High School. Soon after, Mike proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. As a member of the 2nd Armored Division—nicknamed “Hell on Wheels”—he served as a Military Police investigator until his honorable discharge in 1977. During his time in Texas, he took classes at Central Texas College before continuing his education at the University of Iowa, and later the University of Dubuque.

In 1980, Mike married the love of his life, Cheryl (Specht). Together, they built a life centered on love, laughter, and family, raising their three children—Nicole, Brett, and Blair—who were the light of his life. Mike was present in all the moments that mattered, big and small. He supported his children in their many activities, cheered them on at sporting events, and created lasting memories through family vacations—from camping trips to Disney World, Canada, and what he fondly considered “Mecca”—Lambeau Field and the Packers Hall of Fame. Sundays were often spent on family drives to unknown destinations, simply to enjoy time together. He was a steady and caring presence, always offering guidance, helping before being asked, and checking in when work took him away. When his grandchildren were born, Mike became the proud and devoted grandfather he had always hoped to be.

In 1984, Mike began his long career with the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. His dedication to his work and fellow employees led him into union leadership. In 1986, he was elected president of his local branch, serving in that role for a decade. He also served as Local Business Agent from 1991-1995 and again from 1999-2009, and as President of the Iowa Association of Letter Carriers from 2003 to 2009. As an Arbitration Advocate, he traveled extensively, representing and supporting postal workers until his retirement. In 2014, Mike fulfilled a lifelong dream when he was elected National Business Agent, moving to St. Louis to serve in that position until his retirement in 2022. Along the way, he helped thousands of union members and received numerous honors, including induction into the Iowa Letter Carriers Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Dubuque Area Labor Hall of Fame in 2023.

Beyond his professional life, Mike was deeply committed to his community. He was an active member of the Dubuque County Democrats central committee and served as a delegate at several state conventions. He participated in multiple “Get Out the Vote” efforts, served as a district labor coordinator in 2008, and advocated for labor issues in both Des Moines and Washington, D.C. In recognition of his dedication, he was named an Honorary Colonel in the Iowa National Guard by Governor Chet Culver.

Mike will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 46 years, Cheryl; his children, Nicole Birkett of Dubuque, Brett (Kerri) Birkett of Independence, Kentucky, and Blair (Tye) Birkett of Dubuque; and his cherished grandchildren, Lincoln, Florence, and Loretta, whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by his brothers, David (Choe) Birkett of Dubuque, Greg “Pete” (Sherri) Birkett of Durango, Cris (Jackie) Purcell of Durango, and Chad Klein of Dickeyville; brother and sister in-laws Jack & T.D. Specht, Steve and Tammy Specht, Angie & Redelle Lawrence, his nephews Ben Birkett, Andrew Birkett, Hunter Specht, John Lawrence, Lance Lawrence, and nieces Samantha (Adam) Birkett, Natalie Bartman, Lidia Lawrence, McKenzie Specht; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joan (Bob) Purcell; his father, Paul (Eileen) Birkett; his grandparents, Frank and Marie Zwack and Don and Maryel Birkett; and many beloved extended family members.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Dubuque Fire and Rescue, Dubuque EMTs, and the staff at Finley Hospital for their valiant efforts.

Thomas C. Vaughan

THOMAS CHARLES VAUGHAN
October 31, 1943 – April 20, 2026

Thomas Vaughan, 82, was born in Chicago on Halloween in 1943. The family lived in Riverside, Illinois, where he attended Central Elementary School and Houser Junior High. He was a proud member of the Riverside Brookfield High School class of 1961. Prior to college, Tom worked for the Kinney Shoe Corporation during their heyday. He was promoted to assistant manager through three increasingly larger stores in the Western Suburbs until college called. Kendall College in Evanston aided his liberal arts credentials, while the American Institute of Banking focused his business skills.

His first job out of high school was in the corporate office of Jewel Foods during their migration from Chicago’s South Ashland Avenue to their new headquarters in Melrose Park. From there he followed a former boss to Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago, where he enjoyed the next 20 years rising to a commercial lending officer and ultimately as a group leader in their private banking department. As a senior lender in their private bank, he was their alternate member of the bank’s Credit Committee during the bank’s turbulent post-Penn Square fiasco years and participated in many of their meetings. Opportunities outside the recovering bank led Tom to start his own consulting practice, Vaughan and Associates, keeping offices in both Chicago and Del Mar, California for a few years. His main CA client was MJO Enterprises, a diverse group of companies in the vehicle leasing, limousine renting, automotive accessories and high-end vehicle sales. Ultimately, Chicago’s opportunities proved more deserving, notably from a referral from Kidder Peabody. Ultra Care, Inc., was a home medical equipment, nursing infusion, respiratory therapy, and the nation’s sixth largest privately held provider of rehab equipment. Also as a fellow investor, Tom represented other outside investors on their board of directors from their initial capital formulation until the company’s sale to a Fortune 200 competitor.

Tom loved adventures having solo skydived twice from 14,000 feet in Hinckley, Illinois, ran many 5Ks (some with their late dog, Mia), competed in the Respiratory Health Association’s 94-story Hustle up the Hancock for eleven years, and rappelled down the 27 story face of The Wit Hotel twice for another RHA fundraiser. In later years, Tom cut back to the Hustle’s half climb event’s 54-story climb and finished first for his age group in two of those years.

For over thirty years, Tom managed the family’s Leland, Illinois farm located on the southern edge of DeKalb County. His great grandfather, Richard Parks, began that endeavor in 1863 by buying the first property from an individual that had received it through a land grant for his participation in the War of 1812. Subsequently, grandfather Charles, mother Loretta, uncle Vernon Parks, and cousin Charles Parks, Tom’s brother Michael and Tom continued these agricultural responsibilities. Tom, with another partner, Ronald Merkel, today owns the farmstead portion of this agricultural piece of history.

He was predeceased by his parents, Mack and Loretta Parks Vaughan of Riverside, LaGrange, and Leland, Illinois, his wife Vicki Rosemeyer Vaughan, and his brothers Myles (Mike) Vaughan of Franklin Village, MI, Michael Richard Vaughan of Madison, WI and Naples, FL, and nephews Michael and Timothy Vaughan.

Tom leaves behind his life partner of 26 years, Melodie Ann Garcia, and mother of his children Carol Carrino Kissane. Tom is survived by his two sons, Michael Anthony (Kelly Stark Vaughan) and David Charles (Mona Crooks Vaughan). He is also survived by three grandchildren, Finlay David Vaughan (Alexandra Vaughan), Ailis McKenzie Vaughan, and Aidan Michael Vaughan. Great-grandchildren, Ryker, Logan, and Violet Vaughan complete his heritage. Also, Melodie’s daughters, Heather (Jason Johnson), and Gabrielle (Brian Connelly), and their children Leo Johnson and Clark Connelly. Tom enjoyed a close relationship with his late wife’s Rosemeyer family, Vicki being one of six daughters with many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, 1185 IL 35, East Dubuque, Illinois. On Monday, April 27, 2026, attendees are requested to arrive at Miller Funeral Home by 9:30 a.m., as the funeral procession will depart promptly at 9:45 a.m. The procession will proceed to East Dubuque Cemetery (also known as Dunleith Township Cemetery), Hill Street, East Dubuque, Illinois, where Tom will be laid to rest at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom’s honor to Autism Speaks (autismspeaks.org), PAWS (pawschicago.org) or Respiratory Health Association (resphealth.org).

Fredric was born October 26, 1940, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Fredric J. and Alvina (Tinkam) Schaumburg. On August 22, 1964, he married Coralee Schemmel in Dubuque.

He served in the Army National Guard where he was a heavy equipment operator. He then spent his career as a truck driver for St. Regis, Georgia Pacific, and Flexsteel where he proudly logged well over 2 million accident free miles. After retirement, he continued to log miles driving for Runde Chevrolet and Hawkeye Boat Sales.

Fred was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Teamsters Union, and the Moose Lodge. He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and Dale Earnhardt Sr. True to his profession, Fred had a love for driving, and he and his family enjoyed many trips together across the country. He took great pride in his land, where he and Coralee maintained a large garden, and he especially enjoyed spending time tinkering and working outdoors.

Fred also found joy in life’s simple pleasures, peaceful days spent fishing, playing euchre, and indulging his sweet tooth with Hershey’s chocolate bars and homemade ice cream. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, sharing jokes even in his final days. Never one to pass up a good time, Fred loved gathering at The Depot and spending time with his wife, daughters, and their many friends. Above all, he cherished time with the love of his life, Coralee, and took immense pride in being the father of his three wonderful daughters and the grandpa to seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Coralee; his three daughters, Mary (Kris) Kernall of Dubuque, Julie (Dan) Wolff of Dubuque, and Janet (Larry) Grant of Kieler, WI; seven grandchildren, Ramsey (Mykenna) and Ty Kernall, RayJae, Riley, and Ries (Aurora Smith) Wolff, and Jaelyn and Karlee Grant; two great-grandchildren, Walker and Willow Kernall; siblings-in-law, RuthAnn Schaumburg of West Plaines, MO, Elsie Payton of Tipton, IA, Donnie (Diane) Schemmel of Waupeton, IA, Chuck (Sharon) Schemmel, Tony Schemmel, Joe (Diane) Schemmel, Bob (Cindy) Schemmel, Joyce Tigges all of Dubuque; and Marge Schemmel of Durango, IA; good friends, Larry and Shirley McNamer; Kevin and Kurt Hess; and numerous nieces and nephews.
