Marshaun R. Evans

Marshaun Raphael Evans, 49, of Sherrill, IA, passed away on May 3rd, 2024, at home surrounded by his family.

A visitation will be held Friday, May 10th, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd, Dubuque, IA.  A funeral service will be held at 5:00 p.m. with Pastors Caren and Eric Susberry officiating.

Marshaun was born June 19th, 1974, the son of Judy L. Lawson and Henry E. Smith.  He attended Hearst Elementary and Kenwood Academy in Chicago, IL.  He received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from The University of Dubuque.

Throughout his 32 years in Dubuque, Marshaun worked various jobs in the community.  He dedicated the last seven years as a community trainer with Goodwill and the last 11 years as paraprofessional with the Dubuque Community School District.

Marshaun brought joy into the hearts of everyone and was loved by so many.  He has left a positive impact on anyone who was blessed with his presence.  Marshaun was truly a family man, he loved spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his grandmother Sallie Smith, his father Henry, aunts Alice Smith and Valerie Smith, uncles Michael Smith and Gabriel Smith, brother Jovan L. Evans, daughters Aaliyah Rochelle Herrion (Rodasta) and Makayla Renee McIntyre, nieces Jalyssa Katera Evans, Jaliyah Latrice Evans, grandchildren Makhai Brendyn McIntyre-Williams, Haiylaa Kaylinn Rose Rodasta, Ja’Kobe Joseph Allen Herrion.

Marshaun was preceded in death by his grandmother Naomi Payne, his mother Judy Lawson, and his sister Gabriella Smith.

The family would like to thank Derek and Tricia Schmidt, Dr. Hermann, Hospice of Dubuque and anyone who has come alongside Marshaun and his family to offer support.

Antonio Lessei

Antonio “Tony” Lessei passed away peacefully with his beloved family by his side, on May 5th, 2024, in his residence at Sunset Park Place.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 9th, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Dubuque Memorial Gardens with military honors by American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard.

Tony was born to Tomaso Lisi and Bertha Lehnert in Griffith, Indiana and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Glenwood Military Academy, achieving the position of Cadet Commander. He also excelled in athletics playing varsity Baseball, Football and Basketball. He was proud of his time at Glenwood and felt fortunate to have been a student there.

He attended the University of New Mexico on an athletic scholarship. Tony was a gifted athlete in baseball, football and basketball. However, baseball was his passion.

He was drafted by the US Army in 1959 and honorably discharged in 1962. After his military service, he returned to Chicago and married Sally J. Nowakowski on May 4th, 1963. They had three children, Lisa, Dean and Steven Lessei.

Tony worked for the Milwaukee Rail Road as Lieutenant of Police, serving as a detective from 1962 – 1985.

Sally and Tony divorced and he later married Constance A. Hillard, who had five children. They later divorced.

Tony was an owner of the Tail & Ale restaurant and lounge, the Light House Disco and Later Antonio’s Bar.

Tony loved life and was an extremely kind person. He loved playing fast pitch softball during it’s heyday in Dubuque. He also enjoyed playing cards. Euchre was his favorite and he took it serious, as anyone who was his partner would soon find out.

Tony was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He was a member of the Dubuque “Bears” Club.

He was a driver for the Jule Mini-Bus, offering an alternate transportation option for elderly and disabled passengers in Dubuque. He was kind and caring for his passengers and went out of his way to make them feel special or give them a laugh. He took pride in helping others.

Tony was a survivor, overcoming the many health challenges he faced in life. He was a miracle, grateful and loved life.

On May 14th he was to be travelling to Washington DC aboard the Honor Flight. Unfortunately, he will not get to take that trip.

Tony is survived by his first wife Sally, three children, Lisa, Dean (Danielle), Steve (Amy) Lessei, his cherished grandchildren Savannah, Brooke, Luke, Breanna, Ashley & Cole and six great grandchildren with number seven to arrive in June.

He was preceded in death by his father Tomaso, mother Bertha and his former wife Connie.

Tony will be remembered lovingly for his kindness and caring by all who knew him.

Lois M. Olson

Lois M. Olson, age 93, of Dubuque and formerly of Marathon, Iowa, passed away at 10:45 p.m., on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Stonehill Health Center.  To celebrate Lois’s life, there will be a joint celebration for her and her former husband, Dean Olson, held in the afternoon on June 8, 2024, at the Marathon Community Center, 306 W. Attica Street, Marathon, Iowa.  Burial will be in Poland Township Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home in Dubuque and Sliefert Funeral Home in Marathon are assisting the family.

Lois was born on September 20, 1930, in Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of George and Mildred (Goodwin) Beck.  Sadly George would pass away when Lois was very young, but her mother remarried and she gained a wonderful step-father, Christian Hollinger.

After her father passed away the family moved to Sloan, Iowa where she graduated from Sloan High School, Class of 1949.  Lois went on to earn her Associates Degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and would begin teaching elementary school children until the late 50’s.  In 1957, she married Dean Olson and they had 3 sons.  They enjoyed the outdoors and Lois even learned to ride her own BMW motorcycle becoming an official member of the Silver Wheels Club.  Sadly the marriage ended, but they remained friends until he passed away earlier this year.  Lois was always a woman on the go.  She had many business ventures and hobbies including co-owning and operating the Country Clover Farm Store in Marathon from 1979 until the mid 1980’s, owning an antique store, restoring furniture and candle making.  Lois was also very active in her community and served on the school board and as the Mayor of Marathon for 2 terms.  Eventually Lois would meet her long time partner, Dorothy Hoffmann, and discover a love for the RV life.  Every winter they would load up the RV and head to Apache Junction to enjoy the warm weather and spending time with their friends.  Lois has lived a very full life and loved her family deeply.  She will be greatly missed.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents and step-father; her life partner, Dorothy Hoffmann; 3 sisters, Shirley (George) Davis, Barb (Richard) Leth and Christine (Al) Soukup; a nephew, Rick Leth; and her former husband, Dean Olson.

Lois’s family would like to thank her friends at The Rose for the past 9 years, and the nurses and staff of Stonehill and Hospice of Dubuque for the support and kindness they have given to Lois.

Deanna Kane

Deanna Kane, age 67, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on May 5, 2024, at home, while surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Deanna’s life, a private family service will be held at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Deanna’s family.

Deanna was born on July 13, 1956, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Harold and Anna Mae (Halfhill) Thimmesch.  She was blessed with three sons, Terry, Mark and Kevin Kane and sadly discovered an entirely new level of heartache when she lost her son, Mark in 2016.

Deanna spent many years working at the Harmony Care Facility until her eventual retirement in September of 2023.  In her free-time, Deanna loved to go shopping as well as spending time at her craft table working on her latest projects.  She was gifted with a knack for decorating her home and everyone who stopped by to visit always found it to be warm and inviting.

Christmas was undeniably her favorite time of the year, especially when shopping and picking out the perfect gifts for her grandchildren.  Deanna did enjoy venturing out to the casino from time to time to try her luck at the slots, but all who knew and loved Deanna were fully aware that her most precious memories where always to be found in the time she spent with her children and grandchildren.

We will miss Deanna dearly and treasure every wonderful memory that she leaves behind for us.  Thank you, Deanna, for always sharing your love without hesitation and we pray that the Lord grants you eternal peace now after your courageous battle with cancer.

Orval M. Fleckenstein

Orval M. Fleckenstein, 93, of Dubuque, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at Stonehill Communities where he resided for the past 16 years.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., then followed by Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Rd., Dubuque, IA. Rev. Dustin Vu will officiate. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Asbury.

Orval was born September 29, 1930, in Dubuque, the son of Ralph and Marie (Rueter) Fleckenstein. He married Mary Donnelly on October 8, 1955, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Dubuque. She preceded him in death on November 9, 2007.

Orval graduated from Loras Academy and was ranked as one of the best basketball players in the state. In 1948 he was All-State Boys Basketball Selection 5th Team. He also received an All-Tournament Second Team.

He was last employed for many years in sales with Banworth & Udelhoven. He enjoyed working with all his customers and had wonderful memories of his years there. He worked to sacrificially give his children a private faith-based education. He was a member of the Church of the Resurrection. As a man of faith, he prayed daily for his family and saw many prayers answered including his personal prayer that the Lord wouldn’t take him during football season!

Orval was indeed a family man. Weekends were reserved for Sunday family meals with his parents, family picnics with basketball and baseball lessons and also winter sleigh-riding. He enjoyed watching many sports on TV. He was known to be an advocate for his children, frequently calling out the refs for missed calls at their sporting events. He was a Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers fan. He had recently switched his football support to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Orval’s Reese’s peanut butter cups, his wife’s daily homemade desserts, Suzy Q cakes (really chocolate in any form, at any time, on every occasion), daily cigars, big band music and US history books were just a few of life’s little pleasures he enjoyed.

He taught the importance of paying it forward. Share your gifts. Bless others with what you have. He always supported his church and routinely gave to many organizations for the poor and disadvantaged. His family has carried on these traditions. A truly humble and loving man, Orval will be greatly missed but his legacy will continue to live on through the seeds he sowed in his family lineage.

Orval is survived by his children, Mary Jo (Dave) Ayers, of Dubuque, Kathleen (Rod) Smith of New Castle, PA, Joe (Karen) Fleckenstein, of Peosta, Tom Fleckenstein, of Dubuque, David Fleckenstein, of Haslet, TX, and Anne (Michael) Burke, of Cortland, IL; 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren with one due in August, 1 step grandson, and 2 step great-great grandchildren, his sister, Mary Ann Clemens and sisters in law Louise Donnelly & Julie Donnelly.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ray (Helene) Fleckenstein and Jim Fleckenstein, brother in laws William Donnelly Jr and Jim Donnelly, and a nephew William Donnelly III.

Memorials may be given to St. Jude Childrens Hospital, Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque County Right to Life or Hospice of Dubuque.

Margaret M. Barton

Margaret M. Barton, 85, of Dubuque, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the Stonehill Nursing Home with family by her side.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Marge will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Dustin Vu as the Celebrant. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West.

Marge was born on August 8, 1938, in Dubuque, the daughter of John and Margaret (McGuire) Hoyne. She married Ron Barton on October 10, 1964, at Nativity Catholic Church. Marge always referred to Ron as “the love of her life.” They enjoyed almost 23 years together before his death on June 29, 1987.

Marge lived her long life according to three core values: faith, family, and friends. She was an active member of Resurrection Church for over 50 years. She was especially proud of serving as a Eucharistic minister to the homebound. Catholic education was always an important priority to her. She was thrilled that her kids graduated from Resurrection Catholic School and Wahlert High School. She herself was a graduate of The Academy of the Visitation and cherished her monthly lunches with her “Visitation girls.” After high school, she worked for ten years as a secretary at Dubuque Packing Co., where she met her husband.

Marge loved spending holidays with her family and attending her grandchildren’s musicals, concerts, sporting, and robotics events. She also had a sense for adventure and thoroughly enjoyed traveling with her daughters and her sister-in-law. Whether it was a cruise around Ireland and Scotland or visiting picturesque places from Maine to California, Marge was all in. She also had a fondness for Irish music, especially seeing Danny O’Donnell perform live.

Marge lived in the Maple Hills subdivision in Asbury for over 50 years. She valued her many friendships and wonderful neighbors over the years. Marge embodied a deep devotion to her faith, her family, and her friends.

Survivors include her two children, Elizabeth (Craig) Winjum of Indianola, IA; and Paul (Leanne) Barton of Atlanta, GA; and six grandchildren, Andrew, Sam, Abby, Matt, Nate, and Charlie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ron; parents, John and Margaret, brother Billy: daughter Anne; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Darlene and Jim Sorensen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Stonehill Communities and Church of the Resurrection.

The family would like to thank the staff at Stonehill Communities, from independent and assisted living to full care, for the wonderful care and compassion they showed Marge each and every day.

Laura J. Storck

Mrs. Laura J. Storck, 91, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2024 in Dubuque, Iowa.

Laura Jean Storck (née Conrad) was born on August 2, 1932, in Dubuque, Iowa, to the proud parents Allen and Laura (Lippe) Conrad. Alongside her brothers John, Glenn, Alvin, Gerald, and Allan, Laura spent her formative years in Dubuque, where she attended Resurrection Elementary School. Fond memories of her childhood in Dubuque filled Laura’s conversations, reminiscing about the warmth and care that surrounded her.

In her youth, Laura worked at the Arthur Murray Dance School, where her warm smile and infectious humor endeared her to the community. She shared her passion for dance, teaching countless individuals new steps and fostering a love for movement and music.  Additionally, Laura’s creative talents shone brightly as she worked in department stores, where Laura delighted in creating captivating display windows for all to enjoy. Her imaginative touch brought joy to many, as she shared her passion for design and aesthetics with the community.

On August 4, 1973, Laura married the love of her life, Dr. Robert Storck, and together they embarked on a journey of love and companionship that spanned four decades. Laura and Robert shared a love for adventure, spending many years boating along the Mississippi River, from St. Paul, Minnesota to St. Louis, Missouri. In the winter months, they found joy in snowmobiling, exploring the picturesque landscapes of northern Wisconsin and West Yellowstone, Montana.

Laura cherished moments spent with family and friends, particularly relishing gatherings over dinner and treasured conversations. Her generous spirit and warm heart touched the lives of all who knew her. Christmas held a special place in Laura’s heart, and she delighted in the traditions and festivities of the holiday season, spreading joy and cheer to those around her.

Laura will be lovingly remembered by her numerous nieces, nephews, and their children. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert; her parents, Allen and Laura; her brothers, Alvin Conrad, John J. Conrad, Glenn H. Conrad, Gerald W. Conrad, and Allan C. Conrad; and her nephew, Christian Conrad.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dubuque, We See You: The Roy & Deborah Buol Fund, St. Raphael’s Cathedral or a charity of your choice.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Laura’s dear friends Roy and Debbie Buol, Mary and Kim Kahle, Caroline Koppes, Jayne Peterson for their support and companionship, allowing Laura to live her life to the fullest in her twilight years.

A celebration of Laura’s life will be held at a later date, allowing family and friends to gather and honor her memory.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Rest in peace, dear Laura. Your love, laughter, and legacy will forever live on in our hearts, especially during the cherished holiday seasons you adored.

Michael J. Weeber

Our hero, a.k.a. Dad, husband, brother, grandpa, “Weebs,” left good ‘ol Dubuque on May 2nd, 2024. He left Bunker Hill to play a best shot with the big guy in the sky. Word on the street is that he already has a hole-in-one. He was surrounded by his adoring teammates: his children, wife, sister, and grandkids before he left on his heavenly journey.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8th, 2024 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a time of remembrance and closing prayers will be at 7:00 p.m.

Michael John Weeber was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on September 27th, 1953 to Donita and Fred Weeber. He attended Nativity grade school, Senior High School and Loras College, where he received his BA in Education. He went on to become a well-known, successful salesman at Banworth and Udelhoven and The Floor Show Outlet. He was well known for his athletic abilities, achieving many awards and recognitions. Mike played on the Dubuque Packers, was drafted by the Houston Astros, and was inducted into the Dubuque Senior Hall of Fame, Loras College Hall of Fame, and Dubuque Softball Hall of Fame.

Mike met the love of his life, Jackie Hart, at Loras College. They were married on November 19th, 1977, at St. Anthony’s Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie;  five children: Katherine Kruse (Tyler Frost), Molly, Jodi, Jake (Stacey), and Josh (Audrey); seven grandchildren: Nathaniel Kruse, Anna Kruse, Madalynn Kruse, Lexie Kruse, Ava Weeber, Brooks Weeber, and Harper Weeber; his sister Pamela Trimble along with  many nieces and nephews; and his loyal furry companions Buddy and Manny.

Mike was preceded in death by his grandmother Martha Koster, grandfather Harold Koster,  grandmother Ethal Weeber, mother Donita Jaeger, father Frederick Weeber, and his sidekick dog, Maggie.

Mike was well-loved by all and never met a stranger he didn’t like. He was always the life of the party with his warm, loving demeanor and quick wit. He will be greatly missed by all and cherished forever.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dubuque especially Kelli, Dr. Peroski and his nurse Sam and Connor Golden, PA with Medical Associates for all their wonderful care they gave to Mike. A special thank you to all of the family and friends of Mike for their kindness and compassion during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in Mike’s name at Green State Bank.

Ivanell M. Bockenstedt

Ivanell “Toots” M. Bockenstedt, 93, of Luxemburg, Iowa passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Ellen Kennedy Living Center.

A visitation will be held from 3 – 7 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2024, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa.  Visitation will continue from 8:30 – 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home prior to funeral mass.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg with burial to follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Rev. Tyler Raymond will officiate.

Toots was born on December 26, 1930 in Colesburg, Iowa, the daughter of Anton and Theresa ( Neiland) Helle. She married Calvin Bockenstedt on October 9, 1950 in Colesburg, Iowa. Together they farmed near Petersburg and Luxemburg for 24 years, before moving into Luxemburg.

Toots worked hard her entire life on the farm.After moving to Luxemburg, she cleaned at the Luxemburg School for over 20 years. She took pride in her yard and flowerbeds on the farm and in Luxemburg. Toots and Cal enjoyed traveling and socializing throughout the years.

She was a wonderful baker and will be remembered for her delicious cinnamon rolls. She enjoyed her time with her quilting group and passed many handmade quilts to her family.

She is survived by her three sons: Wayne (Joyce) Bockenstedt, Steve Bockenstedt both of Luxemburg and Randy (Sandy) Bockenstedt of Sherrill; three daughters: Judy (Steve) Selchert of Dubuque, Joyce Hess of Cedar Rapids and Sandy (Tim) Wilgenbusch of Dubuque; 18 grandchildren and their spouses, 23 great-grandchildren; in-laws: Doris Helle, Agnes Putz, Helen Nurre, and Maggie Bockenstedt,.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, William and Willameana Bockenstedt; granddaughter, Melissa Gansemer; great-granddaughters: Addison and Emma Destival; siblings: Donald (Ardella) Helle, Tony Helle, Eileen (Frank) Egeloff, Vernon (Mildred) Helle; in-laws: Fred Bockenstedt, Anna Mae (LaVern) Koelker, Ardell (Harold) Klosterman, William (Alice) Bockenstedt, Harold Bockenstedt, Vernon Bockenstedt, and Walter Putz.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Ellen Kennedy Living Center and Hospice of Dubuque for their compassionate care. A special thanks to Megan Holliday for her loving care in her final days.

Mary Kay Launspach

Mary Kay Launspach, of Dubuque, died on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital.  A prayer service will be held at 3:00 pm Monday, May 6, 2024 at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home and Crematory followed by visitation until 7:00 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Kay will be 11:00 am Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Dustin Vu as the Celebrant.  Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West.

Mary Kay was born July 23, 1934 in Dubuque, IA, daughter of Henry and Catherine O’Malley Ludwig.  She married Dale Launspach on October 17, 1953 at St. Anthony’s Church in Dubuque.  Dale preceded her in death on March 18, 2017.

Mary Kay was from the O’Malley clan on her mother’s side, a true Irish lass.  She graduated from Visitation Academy and attended Clarke College.  She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection.  Mary Kay was a homemaker and raised her seven children while also working as a part-time book editor for William Brown Publishing.  There she was able to use her skill with the English language, a trait she shared with her children by correcting their grammar whenever necessary.  After her children were raised, Mary Kay also worked at the Telegraph Herald in the classified department.

In her early years, Mary Kay was an accomplished tennis player, roaming the courts of Dubuque with her friends including her brother, Dick, and her future husband, Dale.  At seventeen, she was the women’s city tennis champion and would continue the sport throughout her life, including a club championship at Thunder Hills Country Club while in her forties.  She loved to play tennis with her children (as long as they hit the ball to her and didn’t make her run, meanwhile running her kids all over the court!).  She was a fierce competitor with her wooden Bancroft racket, but Mary Kay was never a disciplinarian with her children and, although she threatened to use it often to correct a wayward child, that ping-pong paddle never did make it off of the top of the refrigerator.

In 1967, she lost a beloved son to heart failure and, as with any parent that has lost a child, she carried Marty’s memory with her the rest of her life.  In her late sixties, May Kay suffered a massive stroke.  For a woman that had taken such pride in her physical condition she had to spend the next twenty-two years in a body she struggled to control.  Despite these setbacks, Mary Kay remained a kind, loving person with a quick wit.  During those years she relied heavily on her children, son and daughter-in-laws and grandchildren to retain her independent lifestyle.  Especially helpful was her daughter, Geri.

If you were part of Mary Kay’s family, she loved you with all her heart, unconditionally and loyally.  That was especially true of her 20 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.  Any parent trying to bemoan a misbehaving grandchild or great-grandchild of Grandma Mary Kay was met with the same response – “They are perfect!”  As her body failed her, Mary Kay became an even more avid reader and follower of politics.  She had hoped to vote one more time in 2024.  That dream did not come true but she is in heaven now, her arms wrapped around Marty, as the years of sorrow that came from missing him wash away.   Her family is left to celebrate the life of a woman who died the way she lived – peacefully and gracefully.

Survivors include six children, Mary (Warren) White of Glen Haven, WI, Steve (Tracy) Launspach of Peosta, Gerianne Launspach of Dubuque, Dick (Lori) Launspach of Dubuque, Teri (Brian) Schulz of Asbury, and Maureen (Jeff) Bortscheller of Asbury; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Barbara Ludwig of Dubuque.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Martin Dale Launspach, her parents, and one brother, Richard Ludwig.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Mary’s Inn and Opening Doors-Teresa Shelter.

Marjorie M. Thillman

Marjorie M. “Margie” Thillman, age 89, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on April 30, 2024, at home at Eagle Pointe Place, while surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Margie’s life, her committal service with time for sharing will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery located at 1111 Davis St, Dubuque.  Family and friends are also invited to join in for her Celebration of Life which will be held from 1:00–4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at her granddaughter Melanie’s home, 2341 Maplewood Drive in Asbury, IA. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Margie’s family.

Margie was born on July 19, 1934, in Welch, LA, a daughter to Russell and Dorothy (Jones) McMillin.  She spent her formative years developing her kind and loving spirit and dreamed of having a family of her own to love and nurture in time.  One evening at the local skating rink, a young U.S. Air Force G.I. named Robert J. “Bob” Thillman tapped a very shy Margie on the shoulder and asked her to skate together. This was the beginning of a 64-year long love story, blessed with countless memories and four children of their own after they eventually moved back to Dubuque where Bob was from.  Sadly, Bob was called to heaven ahead of her on May 18, 2020, and Margie has waited patiently for their eternal reunion.

Margie was a wonderful wife, a patient mother, and a devoted grandmother and always took great pride in her family and the generations to follow.  In her free-time, Margie enjoyed watching her flower gardens grow, searching for the newest addition to her tea pot collection, and meeting with friends for dinner. She always enjoyed a little country music playing in the background while she worked around the house.  When a little time to relax in the recliner found its way into her day, a good book or the latest episode of The Voice were always considered to be time well spent.  It’s difficult to imagine life moving forward without Margie’s sweet and spicy attitude towards life flowing effortless within the daily lives of those who knew and loved her.  We can only pray that she and Bob are catching up and she’s enjoying a little extra time in the heavenly beauty salon working on her perfect hairstyle.  Thank you, Margie, for consistently possessing a forgiving and gentle soul and may the Lord keep you safe in his loving arms until we meet again.

Paul T. Eads

Paul T. Eads, 75, a lifelong resident of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2024, at home. Born on February 8, 1949, to Everette and Helen (Bramer) Eads, Paul’s life was a testament to his dedication to his family, his work, and his community. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend who left a legacy of warmth, integrity, and kindness.

Graduating from Maquoketa High School, Paul was well-known in the community from a young age. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to own and operate Eads Body Shop and Used Auto Sales in Maquoketa from 1976 until his retirement in 2011. His hard work and commitment to excellence made the shop a cornerstone of the community and a reflection of Paul’s reliable and trustworthy nature.

Paul’s life was enriched by his marriage to Lois Weimerskirch on July 6, 1979, in LaMotte, Iowa. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. Their family grew to include four wonderful children: Lisa, Anthony, Amy, and Paula. Paul was a devoted father, always present and involved in his children’s lives, guiding them with a gentle hand and a generous heart.

His love for his family extended to his cherished grandchildren: Jaxon, Natalie, Lincoln, Cato, Emma, Everly, Josie, Avery, Carly, Cody, Amelia, and Elliott. Paul was their biggest fan, whether he was cheering them on at sporting events, celebrating their accomplishments, or simply enjoying their company during family gatherings.

Paul’s interests and hobbies were as diverse as his talents. An avid outdoorsman, he found peace and joy in fishing and hunting, embracing the beauty of nature that Iowa had to offer. His passion for motorsports, from go-kart to auto racing, was more than just a pastime; it was a way for him to connect with friends and share exciting experiences.  He also loved spending time at the family farm. 

Paul’s presence was a comfort and a source of strength for his family, who are left to honor his memory. He is survived by his loving wife, Lois Eads of Maquoketa; his children, Lisa (Matt) Irwin of Delmar, Anthony (Bridgett) Eads of Baldwin, Amy (Jeremy) DeMoss of Baldwin, and Paula (Adam) Lee of Grand Mound; and his 12 adored grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death.

A funeral mass celebrating his life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, where a 6:30 P.M. Prayer Service will be held.  Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa.

Leora Thornhill Bemboom

Leora (Welp) Thornhill Bemboom, 93, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of East Dubuque, IL, peacefully passed away on Wednesday afternoon, May 1, 2024 at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque surrounded by her loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at the Church of the Resurrection in Dubuque, with Rev. Dustin Vu officiating. Entombment will be in the Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque and from 12:45 – 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday at the church.

Leora was born on Friday, June 13, 1930 in East Dubuque, the daughter of Joseph G. and Ida C. (Klaas) Welp. She went to St. Mary’s Grade School in East Dubuque, and graduated from the East Dubuque High School.

Leora married Jesse Thornhill, Jr. on August 2, 1958, they divorced in 1967 and he died on December 28, 2005.

She was a member of Parents Without Partners (PWP) where she met the love of her life, Leo Bemboom.  They were united in marriage on January 15, 1987 in Dubuque.  He preceded her in death on March 21, 1996.

Leora’s last employment was 26 years at W. C. Brown Publishing Co in the bindery and customer service. After retirement in 1992 Leora went to exercise class at Mercy Silver Advantage. In August 2005 JoAnn Scannel & Leora continued the exercise class & eating at the Lifetime Center.

Surviving is her beloved daughter Tina (Thornhill) Timmerman, her wonderful son-in-law Randy Timmerman of Dubuque; her precious grandchildren Megan Timmerman Salvador & her wife Brittany Salvador of McHenry, IL, Malorie Timmerman Jones & her husband Khalen Jones and their children, Mia Lynn & Kohen Parker Jones of Gulf Breeze, FL, Brad Timmerman, wife Leah Martens Timmerman and daughters Laurel Violet and Maren Jo of St. Catherine, IA; her siblings, Glenn (Pat) Welp of East Dubuque, Janet (Lloyd) Berning of Hazel Green, WI, and Joyce (Syl) Langmeier of Cuba City, WI; step-children, Dennis (Judi) Bemboom of Dubuque, Judy (Steve) Wiebenga of Maquoketa, Dale (Cathie) Bemboom of North Buena Vista, & Donald Bemboom; many nieces & nephews as well as step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren, two aunts, Elsie Beitzel of Dickeyville, WI, and JuDea Klaas of Hudson, WI; very special friends, Kim Bemboom and husband Darren DeMoss of Dubuque.

Sr. Regine Pawelski, OP

Sister Regine Pawelski, OP, died April 26, 2024, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. Her remembering service and funeral Mass will be held at St. Dominic Villa Monday, May 6, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. Miller Funeral Home is handling arrangements.  

Sister Regine was born May 18, 1933, to Lawrence and Antoinette (Kwasnik) Pawelski in Knowlton, Wis. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy, Stevens Point, Wis. Sister Regine received her RN from the St. Joseph School of Nursing, Marshfield, Wis., in 1959 and began working as a staff nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison, Wis. She made profession with the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa in 1962 and received a BS in religious studies from Edgewood College, Madison, in 1983.  

Sister Regine’s ministry was dedicated to nursing. She served as RN at St. Dominic Villa, Dubuque, Iowa. In Wisconsin, she served as director of the health center for 11 years and as RN for 24 years at the Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa. She also ministered at St. Luke Hospital, Milwaukee, and provided family care in Mosinee.   

Sister Regine was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Felix and Theodore Pawelski. She is survived by a sister, Catherine Pawelski; nieces and nephews; and her Dominican Sisters. Theresa R. Prier

Theresa R. Prier, 62, of Dyersville, Iowa passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Unity Point in Dubuque, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10th, 2024 at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa, with a Celebration of Life to follow at 1:00 p.m.

Theresa was born on July 23rd, 1961 in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Verna (Schlichte) Klostermann. She grew up on a farm outside of Dyersville with 11 siblings where her strong work ethic started.  She had many farm stories that she liked to share with family and friends. She graduated from Beckman High School and University of Northern Iowa with her Masters of Arts in Education Counseling: Elementary Guidance and Counseling.   

She was introduced to Chris by two of her brothers and they started dating during her college years.  The two married on June 18th, 1983 at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville.  Chris and Theresa enjoyed traveling the world together and then continued that love of traveling with their daughters. The four of them especially enjoyed traveling to see friends and family across the country.

Theresa enjoyed many hobbies including boating, racquetball, gardening (but not the spiders), bike riding, and attending her daughter’s various school activities. Theresa was know for her bright smile and quick wit.

She will be missed by her husband of 40 years, Chris, two daughters: Anna (Tyler Henley) Prier of Muscatine and Lauren (Drew Wilgenbusch) Prier of Dyersville; siblings: Dave (Pam) Klostermann, Lois (Chuck Crone) Lenz, Mary Lou Hanish, Steve (Elaine) Klostermann, Joan (Denton) Ketels, Robert (Lois) Klostermann, Jane (Michael) Stell, Marcia Klostermann, and Sharon (David) Trenkle; Mother-in-law, Marilyn Prier; in-laws: Sherry (Dave) Kronlage, Randy (Brenda) Prier, Tammy Gassmann, Rob (Lori) Prier, Jayme Prier; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
