Kristal A. Hays

Kristal A. “Kris” Hays, 61, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 14, 2022, surrounded by her loving family after a two-year valiant fight with cancer.

Kristal Allene Kruse was born on June 13, 1961 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Charles, Jr. and Judith A. (Ripple) Kruse.  She attended Maquoketa schools and graduated from MCHS, where she was an outstanding basketball player.  While growing up, she and her siblings rode horses and often showed them at the Jackson County Fair.  She also was active in 4-H and represented Jackson County at the Iowa State Fair 4-H Fashion Review.

In 1981, Kris married Rodney Till.  Two children were born to this union, Ryanne Ruth, and Austin Mycheal.  The couple later divorced, and on September 27, 1991 she married John Hays in Maquoketa, Iowa.  They celebrated their 31^st wedding anniversary this year.  They were best friends and watched sports together, took side-by-side excursions, and attended grandkids school activities.  Kris was especially proud of their grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Additionally, she enjoyed flowers and gardening, and time spent with loved ones sitting around the campfire at the family pond.

Kris first worked at Skeffington’s Jack and Jill in Maquoketa as a checker, and then was employed by Napa Supply Store in DeWitt.  In 1996, she received her teaching certificate from Marycrest College in Davenport, and she immediately began working for Frances Willard School in Rock Island as a 3^rd and 4^th Grade Teacher, and later for the Rock Island School District #41 as a 4^th Grade Teacher.  A position she held until present as she was recently recognized as the Rock Island-Milan School District Educator of the Year for 2022.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, John Hays of DeWitt, IA; children, Ryanne (Mike) Trusty of DeWitt, IA, Austin (Megan) Till of DeWitt, IA, and Ryan (Danielle) Hays of Monticello, IA; her seven grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Niya, Kolt, Knox, Gretchen, Memphis, Jacoby, and Samuel; her mother, Judy Tonderum of Maquoketa, IA; siblings, Kelly (Peter) Nelles of Mt. Horeb, WI, Korey Harmon of Maquoketa, IA, and Kraig (Judy) Kruse of Maquoketa, IA; aunt, Margene Beach; uncle, Gerald Owen; plus cousins and nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her father Chuck Kruse, aunt Connie Owen, stepfather Harlan Tonderum, and father-in-law Roger Hays.

A private family memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  There is no public service or visitation.  Cremation has taken place.  In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to the family with proceeds going to a place near to Kris’ heart, the Rock Island Center for Math and Science.

Brian T. Gockel

Brian T. Gockel, age 43, of Dubuque, IA, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 13, 2022, at home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at St. Columbkille Church in Dubuque, with Fr. Tom McDermott and Fr. Dave Schatz concelebrating.  Burial in the East Dubuque Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 – 7 p.m. on Friday at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, IL, where the parish rosary will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. Friends may also call from 9 – 9:45 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Brian was born on February 13, 1979, in Dubuque, the son of Thomas M. and Patricia Ann (Bennett) Gockel. He was a 1998 graduate of East Dubuque High School and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Clarke College in Dubuque. Brian was united in marriage to Keri L. Heitkamp on October 6, 2001, at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque.

Brian’s family was his greatest pride and joy, and it was evident in all that he did as a devoted husband and father. His humor and fun-loving personality won the hearts of many friends, family, and co-workers. He was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works as a Quality Engineer. Brian was a member of St. Columbkille Parish.

Surviving is his wife, Keri; two daughters, Faith and Meredith at home, his father, Thomas M. Gockel of East Dubuque; his siblings, Lori (Randy) Hancock of Peosta, IA, Steve (Kim) Gockel of East Dubuque, and Chris (Joanne) Gockel of Maquoketa, IA; his mother-in-law, Debbie (Sheehan) Heitkamp and father-in-law, Dennis Heitkamp; sister-in-law and husband, Chelsea (Spencer) Kirschbaum of East Dubuque; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother Patricia and two children in utero.

Joseph A. Johnson

Joseph A. Johnson, 90, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on November 14, 2022 at MercyOne Medical Center.

A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, November 18^th, 2022 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with Sr. Margaret Anne Kramer officiating. Family and friends may gather after 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home until time of service. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard.

Joseph was born on November 9^th, 1932, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Sylvester and Angela (Thielen) Callahan. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, and was united in marriage to his wife Patricia Ann (Roche) Johnson. Joe is a US Army Veteran and was honorably discharged in 1955.

Joe Johnson was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His love for the Chicago Cubs and Bears came second only to the unyielding love he felt for his family. Thankfully he also had a love for animals, as many found their way into his home. Joe had endless hobbies that he shared with his grandchildren. Whether it was baseball cards, genealogy, comic books, or the monthly creation of family calendars. He was proud of his years working for the Telegraph Herald and made many friends during that time. He was a dedicated husband and father and will be missed dearly.

Joseph is survived by his wife Patricia; his daughters Kathy (Mark) Sand, Susan (Larry) Bonert, and Lisa (Steve) Ehrlich; grandchildren Jeffrey (Tisha) Sand, Jessica (Bill) Hanson, Aaron (Megan) Bonert, and Andy (Kelsey) Ehrlich, and his great grandchildren Jakob Sand Abigail Sand, Emma Hanson, and Benjamin Hanson.

He was preceded in death by his parents Sylvester and Angela Callahan, and sister Joyce Specht.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, a Joseph A. Johnson Memorial Fund has been established.

William J. Hagerty

William John Hagerty, 70, longtime resident of Bankston, Iowa passed away in the early hours of Sunday November 13th, 2022.

Bill was born on September 28th, 1952 at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque.  He was the son of Louis “Bud” and Colette (Donahue) Hagerty from Bankston, Iowa.

There was three things Bill loved the most in his life: his grandkids, cars, and wife Sharon (Gartner) from Dyersville, Iowa.  They were together 55 wonderful years and would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this coming February.

In their marriage they had 3 children; Josh (April) Hagerty of Dyersville, Heidi (Todd) Klein of Holy Cross, Margie (Tony) Sheridan of Peosta.  Bill’s greatest accomplishment was his 7 grandchildren: Ava, Kaitlyn, Gage, Gertie, Leah, Dottie, & Luke. They were the light in his soul and Papa was the instigator of all the mischief.

Bill was a jack of all trades but he spent his days as a mechanic at his shop University Auto and restoring classic cars. He loved to garden and spend time with his family.  He was always up for a tractor ride around the yard or a good burnout in the driveway.

Bill was preceded in death by: Louis and Colette Hagerty, Harold and Marjorie Gartner, a brother, Gerald in infancy, Brother-in-laws Jim and Joe Gartner, Donald Kirkpatrick, Matthew Cottrell, Pedro Martinez and Douglas Staggs.

He was survived by Dave of California, Ronnie (Debbie) of Epworth, Carrie (Don) Schmit from Waterloo, Steve (Diane) of California, Kathy of Kentucky, Jeanne of Dubuque, Mary of California, Sue (Jim) Staggs of Dubuque, John (Heide) of South Carolina, Mike (Angie) of Ankeny

A celebration of life will be held at Leonard Funeral home in Dubuque Iowa on Saturday, November 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a service to be held at 12:00 p.m. and military honors by the American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard.

The Hagerty family would like to thank all the staff at Mercy Hospital for the amazing care he received in his final days.

Ruth M. O’Toole

Ruth M. O’Toole, 88, of Dubuque, died Monday, November 14, 2022, at the Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque following a short illness.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:15 am Friday, November 18, 2022 at Church of the Resurrection.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Ruth will be 10:30 am Friday, November 18, 2022, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque at a later date.

Ruth was born July 20, 1934, in Balltown, IA, the daughter of Anthony and Mildred Link Jaeger. On July 21, 1962, she married Larry O’Toole at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He died June 9, 2015.

She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1952, and Xavier Hospital X-ray technology in 1954. She worked in LeMars, IA as an X-ray tech in 1956.  She was employed at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, IL until 1962 when she married Larry.  They lived in Norfolk, NE until 1965 when they moved to Minneapolis, MN and she worked for St. Paul Radiology until her retirement in 1995.  They moved back to Dubuque in 2009 and resided at Oak Park Place.

She enjoyed crafts, needlework, knitting, reading, and travel.  She was a member of the Red Hats for 14 years.  She was very dedicated and caring to her husband who went blind shortly after they were married.

Survivors include one brother, Jerome (Donna Mae) Jaeger of Dubuque; brother-in-law, Gary Summers of Findlay, OH; numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Iola (Anthony) Kerper, Mary Summers, and Jean Ann (Sylvester) Steger and one niece, two great nieces and two nephews.

Beulah F. Paar

Beulah F. “Bill” Paar, age 66, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 14, 2022, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.  There will not be a public service held at this time, but there will be a Celebration of Life held next spring.  Burial will be at a later date in Ponting Cemetery in Stonington, Illinois.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting the family.

Bill was born on August 23, 1956, in Stonington, Illinois, daughter of Kenneth and Louise (Schubach) Wiseman.

Bill was united in marriage to Thomas Paar on May 14, 1983, in Dubuque and they have enjoyed 39 wonderful years together.  She was a hard worker who was a long time employee of Theisen’s.  Bill was an avid league bowler for many years with her best friend Tanya Plumley.  Family was always the most important in Bill’s life and she cherished spending time with everyone.  She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.

Betty L. Smith

Betty L. Smith, 92, of Dubuque, passed away Monday, November 14, at Bethany Home.

Betty was born November 7, 1930 in Dubuque, the daughter of John  and Mary (Sheehan) Kauzlick. She married Donald L. Smith on April 7, 1951. He preceded her in death on December 31, 2009.

Betty was a homemaker, and she enjoyed reading, bingo, playing euchre, bowling, and going to the casino. She loved her many animals over the years, and spending time at Eagle Point Park.  Betty had a zest for life, and will be remembered as a beautiful, classy, and sassy lady. In her later years, she made her home at The Rose, where she made many friends, and was known as “the candy lady”, passing out candy to anyone who came by. Betty was well-loved by many and will be missed.

Betty is survived by three daughters, Debra (Victor) Gonzales, and Vickie (Greg) Krajewski, both of Arizona, .and Lori (Joe Deckert) Bauer, of Dubuque; her grandchildren, Kelly, Kim, Tess, Samuel, Eric, Ryan, Ashley, Joshua, Taylor, and Tanner; 14 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her son, Rick Smith on September 17, 2013; and her parents.

Janet R. Sullivan

Janet R. Sullivan, 77 of Galena, IL passed away Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, November 26, 2022, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where friends may call after 9 AM until the time of service. The burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena. Cremation rites have been accorded.

She was born September 10, 1945, in Galena, the daughter of William and Florence (Green) Haase. Janet was united in marriage to Richard Sullivan on April 25, 1964, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Galena. She loved taking long rides in the country, the holidays, and spending time with her family.

Janet is survived by her husband, Richard, of Galena, her two sons, Bill (Karen) Sullivan of Anaheim, CA, and Tim (Shauna) Sullivan, of Godfrey, IL, five grandchildren, Nicole (Kyle) Craig of Fullerton, CA, Hannah (Nolan) Atkins, of Little Elm, TX, and Abigail, Ty, and Drew Sullivan of Godfrey, IL, great-granddaughter, Emma Craig, her sister-in-law, Rita Glasgow, and her many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Ronald Haase, and two brothers-in-law, Merlyn (Marguerita) and Jim Glasgow, a sister-in-law, Bev Haase.

Helen K. Bussan

Helen K. Bussan, age 62, of Dubuque, passed away unexpectedly at 11:40 a.m., on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at her home.  To honor Helen’s life, private family services were held at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Burial will be at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Helen was born on January 12, 1960, in Davenport, Iowa, daughter of Dale and Dolores (Ressler) Walbrun.

Helen attended school in Dubuque and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, Class of 1979.  She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Robert Bussan, on August 25, 1984, at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque.  Helen was a devoted full time wife and homemaker who took impeccable care of her home.  She also took pride in her appearance and was a fashionista who loved to accessorize her outfits.  Helen was a social butterfly who loved taking road trips, playing Bingo and planning family events.  She liked going out to eat and never turned down a good German meal.  She and Bob liked traveling the tri-state area and using their CB Radios.  Helen had a big heart and was a kind and generous person who always looked out for her family and friends.  She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Dale G. Schmitt

Dale Gerald Schmitt, 61, of Dubuque passed away Sunday, November 6th, 2022, at home.

Visitation will be held 3:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, November 17th, 2022, at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a service will be held at 7:00 p.m.

Dale “Skinny” Schmitt was born on March 14th, 1961, at Xavier Hospital in Dubuque, IA. He was the son of Melvin P. “Boots” Schmitt and Virginia E. “Trixie” Ritt Schmitt. Skinny graduated from Hempstead High School with the class of 1979. He was a hard worker and made many sacrifices to provide for his family. Skinny worked for Brian Hefel Construction, moved on to work as a laborer and mechanic for the railroad for 20+ years, and lastly as a mechanic for Flynn Co.

Skinny loved nature and being outdoors. He liked to hunt and raised pheasants and quail with his boys. He loved to work in his yard and to plant trees; he would get rather irritated with his boys if they “hurt” his trees. He liked working with wood and enjoyed may DIY projects. Some of these projects included fixing his brother David’s mishaps.

Skinny was a fan of anything with two wheels that went fast. He also loved his Diet Pepsi and his Copenhagen. He loved spending time with his granddaughters, riding his Harley, playing cards at the Barn with his buddies, and bullshitting with his friends.

Skinny was a fan of having a good time. He worked hard and lived hard. To us, he was a loveable pain in everyone’s ass and he will be missed by many.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents Boots and Trixie Schmitt and his brother-in-law John “Tubby” Freiburger. Surviving are his children Chase (Rose) Schmitt of North Liberty, Cody (Nicole) Schmitt of Durango, and Cathryn (Nate Schetgen) Schmitt of Dubuque; his two granddaughters Sophie Schmitt and Addi Marburger; and his siblings Janice “Mabel” Freiburger of Peosta, Dennie (Deb) Schmitt of Sherrill, David “Chips” Schmitt of Sherrill, and Joyce (Frank) Freiburger of Dubuque. He was also loved by many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the Dubuque Police Department, Medical Examiners, and Funeral Home who responded and assisted the family.

Vernon A. Haberkorn

Vernon A. Haberkorn, age 92, of Dubuque, passed away at 7:15 p.m., on Friday, November 11, 2022, at Assisi Village with his wife Rose by his side.  To honor Vern’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture service held at 2:30 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, November 18, 2022, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue with Rev. Steven M. Garner officiating.  Entombment will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.

Vern was born on October 6, 1930, at home in Sherrill, Iowa, son of Edmund and Frances (Meyer) Haberkorn.  He graduated from Loras Academy in 1948.  He married Rose Marie Brimeyer on October 18, 1952, in Sherrill at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.  He worked for the Milwaukee Road and Illinois Central Railroads from 1947-1960, and John Deere Dubuque Works from 1960, until his retirement in 1989.

Vern lived a life of service to his community.  He coached, managed and played on several semi-pro baseball teams.  He founded the Dubuque Boys Independent Baseball League in Dubuque in 1968, where he served as president for 20 years and was a board member and umpire for 28 years.  Vern founded it on motivation, discipline, sportsmanship and conduct.  He was involved with baseball as a manager, player, league officer or umpire for over 50 years.  He was inducted into the Dubuque County Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009 and received a Certificate of Recognition from the State of Iowa House of Representatives in 1996.

Vern and Rose traveled to all 50 states and beyond.  He was a member of UAW Local 94, Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dubuque for 48 years and served 2 terms on their Parish Council.   He and Rose chaired the expansion of the Marriage Encounter Program from Holy Ghost to all 13 Dubuque parishes.  He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Marion for 22 years.  He also served on the City of Dubuque Zoning Board for 2 terms and was liaison to the Long Range Planning Board for 2 years.  Vern served on the Board of the Willowridge Owners Association in Marion for 13 years, and volunteered at the Marion Public Library Bookstore for 10 years.  In Vern’s memory please consider volunteering in your community.

Jeannine V. Bruscato

Jeannine Violet Bruscato, age 87, died peacefully of natural causes on Saturday, November 12, 2022. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family.

She was born September 19, 1935, in Chicago to Landon and Caroline (Rueffer) Brooks. She grew up in Chicago, IL where she met and married Frank Bruscato Sr. in 1953. They were together until his death in 2013. Together they raised six children. Jeannine loved to entertain and meet new people. She could walk into a grocery store for a gallon of milk and come out with a half dozen new friends. Always caring for others, she was notorious for sharing her chocolate eclairs with friends and family. Her chocolate chip cookies were a particular favorite with her grandchildren. After retiring from her cleaning business, she and Frank retired to Apple Canyon Lake where she enjoyed a variety of activities including baking, spending time with her family, and playing cards with her friends.

She is survived by her children, Kim (Scott) Kirkpatrick of Cottage Grove, WI, Jeannine (Chad) Riddle of Elgin, IL, Frank Bruscato Jr. of Scales Mound, IL, Donna (Glenn) Evers of Hanover Park, IL, Leslie (Nick) Petramale of Hoffman Estates, IL, Anthony (Natalia) Bruscato of Geneva, IL, fifteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, a sister Beverly Grinko and brother, Larry (Phyllis) Brooks. The children of Jeannine would like to express our deepest gratitude to Allure of Stockton nursing home for the excellent care and treatment they gave our mother.

Carol M. Althoff

Carol Marie Althoff, 71, of La Motte, Iowa passed away Sunday, November 13, 2022, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 17th, 2022, at Saint Joseph Key West Church with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 16th, 2022 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 2:45 p.m.

Carol was born on June 23, 1951, in Dubuque the daughter of Kenneth and Monica (Donahue) Pancratz. She attended Cascade Aquin High School and Graduated from Nursing College in Rock Island, IL. She then worked in Milwaukee as a registered Nurse for six months before moving back to Dubuque. On February 22, 1975, she married Ron Althoff and together they shared 47 years until Ron’s passing this past March.

She worked at Finley Hospital in Dubuque for 35 years and later at Dubuque Internal Medicine, along with working on the farm and being a full-time mother to her four sons, and later a devoted grandmother. She was a great supporter of the Zwingle Recreation Association and could often be found cutting grass at the ball fields.

Carol loved being a grandma, which kept her very busy. If a child or grandchild had a unique interest, she made them personalized projects from snuggly pillow to a 3D cardboard PacMan maze. She visited comic bookstores, sat through hundreds of ball games and watched danced recitals and horse-riding events. She loved spending time with her family as well as lifelong friends known as the “Trolls”.

In retirement, she kept a steady monthly schedule of lunch dates with the Trolls, Otter Creek Ladies, Finley Retirees, nursing friends and a multitude of special people whose lives she touched over the years.

For several years, she enjoyed a routine of Sunday church, breakfast with her siblings followed up by a visit to Menards with Betty and Elenor.

She is survived by her three sons Marty (Stephanie) Althoff of Robins, Iowa, Greg (Kay) Althoff of LaMotte, and B.J. “Brian” Althoff of Dubuque; her seven grandchildren Ryan, Andy, Toby, Elliott, Hannah, Henry, and Gracelin “Gracie”; a sister Lois Pancratz of Dubuque, three brothers, Jim (Jeannie Ambrosy) Pancratz of Dubuque Mike Pancratz of Zwingle, and Tom (Katie) Pancratz of Eldridge.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents; her son Scott Althoff in 2002 and her husband Ronnie on March 14, 2022.

Joseph A. Peavy

Joseph Andrew Peavy, 21, of Dubuque, was sadly found Wednesday, November 9, 2022.

Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 21, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Grand View United Methodist Church, 3342 John Wesley Drive, Dubuque. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.egelhofsiegertcasper.com .

Joseph was born August 17, 2001 in Dubuque, the son of Kevin and Jody (Kenniker) Peavy. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School with the Class of 2020.

Joseph enjoyed playing video games, collecting rocks, talking to the sun, fishing with his dad, and spending time with his pets. Joseph’s favorite shows to watch with his family were M*A*S*H and Cheers. He loved to sing, write songs, and could do wonderful impressions of anyone. His dream was to become an actor, singer, and video game creator. Joseph was extremely smart, and had a memory that often amazed his family. No matter how Joseph was feeling inside, he always loved to make people smile and brighten their day. He touched many, many lives in his 21 years, and he will be terribly missed.

Joseph is survived by his parents, Kevin and Jody Peavy; his sister, Skylyn Peavy; his grandmother, Judy Kenniker; his uncles and aunts, Channing and Lisa (Linenfelser) Kenniker, and Charlene and Mike Outlaw; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Richard Kenniker; his paternal grandparents, Joe and Phyllis Peacock; and two uncles on his father’s side.

Angella M. Wemmer

Angella M. “Angie” (Haupert) Wemmer, age 90, of Asbury, passed away at 4:52 a.m., on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at her home surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Angie’s life, family and friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 3:45 p.m.  There will also be visitation on Thursday, November 17, 2022, from 10:15 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., before the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., at the Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Phil Gibbs officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.

Angie, affectionately known as Mussie, was born on February 6, 1932, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Clarence and Crystal (Hines) Haupert. Angie attended St. Mary’s Grade School and graduated from the Immaculate Conception Academy, class of 1950.  While in high school she worked at the University Inn where she met and later married Roy Wemmer, Jr. on September 16, 1950.  During her marriage to Roy she gave birth to 10 children.  Together from 1951 to 1964, Angie and Roy ran the West Dubuque Tap, where a line formed around the block on Friday nights for Angie’s fried fish.  After selling the tavern, Angie went on to cook at some of the best supper clubs in the tri-state area including The Circle, The Coach House, The Cock & Bull, The Wheelhouse and Leiser’s Supper Club.  Angie also worked for 14 years for the Dubuque Community Schools retiring in 2003, as the Assistant Manager of the Central Kitchen.

Angie loved to cook and was especially good at it.  Just ask any of her relatives, friends and co-workers lucky enough to have enjoyed the food she prepared.  Her children and their spouses, in particular, will tell you she was a great cook.  Angie would often tell her daughters that their spouses only married them for HER cooking.  Her family will tell you her gravy was so good you could drink it and could actually be considered its own food group.

Angie loved to travel.  As a child she spent summers in Chicago with her cousins and their families.  She grew to love the Windy City and all it had to offer.  As an adult she and Roy would take their family to Chicago in the summer to visit relatives and museums, the aquarium and other attractions.  This created close cousin bonds and a love of Chicago in her children as well.  In retirement Angie enjoyed cruises with her daughter Clare and her brother Frank and his wife Jean.  She was fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel to Mexico, Japan, the Caribbean, and Alaska, where she took a helicopter to drink champagne on a glacier with her son-in-law, Dick.

Angie’s faith was important to her.  She was a member of the Catholic Mothers Study Club at St. Anthony’s in the 1950’s and early 60’s.  She was a long time member of St. Raphael’s Parish where she served on the Community Life Committee.

Angie was fun and funny.  She could tell a good joke and had a great laugh.  In the 1980’s and 90’s Angie and Roy owned and operated Multi-State Advertisers, Inc.  While Roy sold the ads, Angie would contribute by writing humorous articles about family and friends for their downtown newsletter, The Profile.  She was also known for her “Roasts” of coworkers upon their retirement.  When asked what her favorite thing to do was other than cooking she responded by saying she loved “nothing better than sharing a good laugh with people.”

Angie’s cooking, quick wit and laughter will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her children, Clare Wemmer, Cathy (Fred) Hedley, Carla (Jay) Wieser, Roy Wemmer, III, Ray (Takayo) Wemmer, Carrie (John Rettenmeier) Schmid, Connie (Roger) Powell and Corrie (George) Torres.  Angie also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren, a beloved brother Frank and a sister-in-law Marianne Haupert.

Angie was preceded in death by her husband Roy, an infant son Robert, her daughter Christine, her son-in-law Dick Schmid, her sister Jean (Jerry) Hultgren, her brother Carl Haupert and a sister-in-law Jean Haupert.

She also leaves behind wonderful neighbors, Steve and Pat Scott, a dear old friend Karen Wolter and a beloved former son-in-law Mike Sorensen, Sr.

The family would like to thank all of the nurses and social workers from Hospice of Dubuque for the compassionate care and support provided to Angie.
