Lawrence E. Walter

Lawrence E. “Larry” Walter, age 87, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on February 25, 2026, at MercyOne while surrounded by his loving family.  To honor Larry’s life, a memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road in Dubuque, with Rev. Phil Gibbs officiating.  Family and friends are invited to join in fellowship from 9:00-10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Larry’s family.

Larry was born on November 2, 1938, in Dubuque, IA, a son to George and Ellen (Rettenmeier) Walter.  Larry was a proud graduate of East Dubuque High School and eventually met the love of his life, Donna Putchio. The two were united in marriage on June 13, 1959, at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque, IL.  They were blessed with 66 wonderful years together and five children of their own to love and nurture along the way.  Larry was honored to provide for his family and spent over 43 years of his working career with the Dubuque Packing Company until its closure in 2001.  He took great pride in his work and made countless friends over his years there, especially his best friend, Charlie Reisen. Their families shared many cherished vacations together.   In his later years, Larry generously gave his time as a patient aide with Medical Associates and Dubuque Internal Medicine, always giving back more than he took and using his time to help others when and where he could.

In his free-time, Larry was an avid sports fan.  He enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play from their early years in Little League through high school.  He was their biggest fan, and it would be difficult to find a close second.  He also enjoyed watching professional sports, and as most fans in the area are aware, the best teams are clearly the Bears, Cubs, and Iowa Hawkeyes, and Larry was no exception to the rule.  When his teams were taking the field, Larry was always right there to cheer them on.  When a little extra family time found its way into Larry’s day, there was no greater thrill than to sit down at the euchre table and remind them who the true euchre champion was just in case they had a momentary lapse which required adjustment.  Larry was gifted with a kind heart and gentle soul which he carried and displayed continuously throughout his 87 years among us.  Thank you, Larry, for being the best husband, dad, grandpa, and GGPA we could ever ask for. May the Lord keep you safe and secure in His loving arms until we see your loving smile once again.

Stecker; his brothers, Michael Walter and John Walter;  his sister, Mary Ellen Clark; his mother and father-in-law, Gus (Doris) Puccio; his sister-in-law, Eileen Putchio; and sadly many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a Lawrence E. Walter memorial fund has been established.

Patricia G. Gent

Patricia “Pat” Gail (Teeple) Gent, 80, passed away peacefully Wednesday February 25, 2026, at home with her husband at her side.

Pat was born January 22, 1946, in Anamosa, Iowa, the youngest of 3 daughters, to Paul and Velma (Skott) Teeple.  She was raised on the family farm west of Monmouth and graduated from Midland High School with the Class of 1964.  On September 30, 1967, she married Philip Gent in Cedar Rapids, where they raised their family and lived until moving to the Teeple farm in 1988.

Pat dedicated her life to helping others.  Following high school she worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital.  She left her nursing career in order to focus her time on raising her two sons, volunteering her time to be a Room Mother at their school, serving on the PTA, spending a few years as Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, and being a surrogate mother for numerous wild animal babies that made their way to the Gent home over the years.  In her spare time, she enjoyed garage sales, coffee with Marilyn, refinishing antique furniture, and creating crafts and art of all kinds.  As the grandkids and great-nieces and -nephews got old enough, she eagerly passed along her love of creating, especially during Labor Day weekend family reunions. She helped to inspire numerous State Fair 4-H projects by Cale and Kaylyn. Pat and Phil worked side by side as well, buying, fixing up, and reselling numerous houses in Cedar Rapids and Maquoketa.  When Phil left the bank and started his own real estate appraisal business, Pat was office manager, accountant, HR director, and occasional receptionist.  In retirement, Pat put her creativity and organizational skills to work volunteering at the Jackson County Historical Society.

Pat is survived by her husband, Phil, sons Skott (Christine) Gent of Monmouth and Chad (Michelle) Gent of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren Cale (Nicole) Gent of Garner, Iowa, Kaylyn Gent of Maquoketa, Iowa, Ryan Gent of Omaha, and Alex Gent of Phoenix, Arizona; and great-grandchildren Thea and Beckham Gent of Garner.  Also surviving are sisters Carmin Teeple and Rosemary Kariakin, special cousin/”sister” Janet (Eugene) Gruhn, sisters-in-law Judy Sieren and Bonnie Warren, brother-in-law Russ Gent, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and parents-in-law, sister-in-law Jan Heinen Gent and brothers-in-law Joe Kariakin, Bill Warren, and Ray Sieren.

Pat’s wishes were to celebrate her life, not to mourn her loss.  A memorial service for the family will be held at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa at 10 A.M., Saturday, March 14, 2026, followed by a time for a public celebration of life at the Together We Build TWB Outreach Center at the Jackson County Fairgrounds, 1102 East Quarry Street, Maquoketa, IA 52060, from 11:30 A.M. to 2:30 P.M.  Lunch will be served at noon.  Cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to the Jackson County Historical Society or Hospice of Jackson County.

Roger C. Sherman

Roger C. Sherman, age 96, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of East Dubuque, IL, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026 at his apartment at The Rose.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026 at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque, with Fr. Bosco Aruldoss officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the East Dubuque Cemetery, with military honors accorded by members of the East Dubuque American Legion Post # 787.

There will be a celebration of Roger’s life from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27th at Timmerman’s Supper Club in East Dubuque.

Roger was born in Dubuque on March 11, 1929, the son of James F. and Othilda M. (Goebel) Sherman. He was a graduate of East Dubuque High School. Roger served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On February 23, 1957 he married the love of his life, Helen M. Lindauer at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, North Garryowen (rural Bernard, IA.) He passed away just in time to celebrate their 69^th wedding anniversary together. She preceded him in death on September 9, 2018.

He was formerly employed at Sherman’s Gas Station, Trausch Baking Company and retired from Interstate Power Company in 1990. Roger was a member of IBEW Local # 704 and St. Mary’s Parish. He loved hunting, golfing, the morning coffee group at Lacoma Golf Course and played softball for many area teams.

A major highlight for Roger was being able to participate in the 2011 Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

Surviving are five children, Rick (Mary Ann) Sherman of Eldridge, IA, Dan  (Stephanie) Sherman of East Dubuque, Tim (Kelly) Sherman of Dubuque, Judy Sherman of East Dubuque, and Nancy (Mark) Mueller of Kieler, WI; 12-grandchildren, Paul Sherman, Sara (Jeff) Long, Matt (Anna) Sherman, Laura & Ann Sherman, Jessica (Jacob) Puls, Carissa (Austin) Kennicker, Jenna (Matt) Berning, Jason (Taylor) Schneider, Justin (special friend Kelly) Schneider and Nate & Rachel Mueller; 15-great grandchildren, Cody & Noah Long, Madelyn & Micah Sherman, Bo, Charlotte & Margaret Puls, Augustus & Stetson Kennicker, Ava, Logan, Lane, & Annistyn Berning, and Tate & Luka Schneider; his sister, Fay Ann Tracey of Colorado, and two sisters-in-law, Helen (Blonde) Lindauer and Ellen Lindauer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Othilda, his wife Helen, an infant son Joseph, brother, Dick (Maggie) Sherman, sister, Kay, in-laws, Jim Tracey, Ed (Marie) Lindauer, Isabel Lindauer, Don Lindauer, Bob Lindauer, Alice (Jim) Wolf, Mary (Gil) Green, Jane Lindauer.

Arlyn R. Weber

Arlyn R. Weber of Potosi, WI passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Sienna Crest, in Mineral Point, WI, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was born in Cuba City, WI on March 6, 1949, to Harold and Almira (Dalsing) Weber, the 4th of 8 children. At the age of 6 his family moved to a farm near Potosi. Arlyn went to elementary school at Rigsby School and graduated in 1967 from Potosi High School, where he played basketball and ran track. His father died of a heart attack in 1963, and through most of his high school and college years, Arlyn worked hard to keep the family farm going. He went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin—Platteville in 1971, where he distinguished himself as a soccer player, having joined the team completely new to the sport in his sophomore year and working his way into a starting position as a midfielder.

He worked as a substitute teacher and at Flexsteel after graduating, and began a long career at John Deere in 1974. He was a basketball referee, and coached soccer at both Wahlert and Hempstead High Schools in Dubuque, earning MVC Coach of the Year honors four times. Retiring from Deere and Co. after 33 years, he taught drivers education through Southwest Tech until he became ill. For a short time before that he was a museum educator at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium and continued to volunteer there at events for many years.

He was a long-time member of Ss. Andrew-Thomas Church, where he served as an altar boy as a youngster and later as an usher. Arlyn was a great supporter of youth sports and also an avid bow hunter and fisherman, teaching his sons the joy of competition and of being in the great outdoors. He loved long bicycle rides, and continued to ride well into his illness. Arlyn and Dee also loved to travel, including Ireland, Scotland, Hawaii, and Australia. There wasn’t a sport he couldn’t figure out by watching it, but soccer was his favorite, especially Manchester United.

Arlyn married the love of his life, Deirdre (Dee) Caya, on August 10, 1974, at St. Andrew’s Church in Tennyson, WI. She survives him. He is further survived by three sons, Allyn of Middleton, Sam of Cassville, and Andy (Kristin) of Mineral Point, as well as his almost-son, Hiro Konishi of Tokyo, who lived with the family for six years as a foreign exchange student. He is further survived by his beloved grandchildren, Kate, Jack, Eric, and Cecilia. He is also survived by his siblings Justin (Joyce), Frank (Rita), Tom (Janelle), Darrell (Cathy), and Janiece, in-laws Barb Weber, Linda Barr, Kathy (Mark) Steuck, George Kopp, and Dan Kerkenbush, and many nieces and nephews, including his favorite, Becky, who was Fred to his Wilma. His pack of Boston terriers, Kona, Mugsy and Gus still wait his return.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Jerome and Arvin, parents-in-laws Allan and Pat Caya, sisters-in-law Mary, Eileen and Alice, and many uncles and aunts, as well as his loyal dogs Aggie, Fiona and Nellie.

According to his wishes, there will be no formal services and a private internment of his ashes will be held at a later date. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Depot at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium on March 6, 2026, from 5 to 7 PM. It has been suggested that mourners wear bike shorts in memory of Arlyn, something that he would have found totally hilarious. (With the caveat that Spandex is a privilege and not a right, which he routinely abused.)

The family wishes to give their deepest thanks to Agrace Hospice and Sienna Crest staff for their excellent care of Arlyn.

John J. Cannon

John “Jack” J. Cannon, 98, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Bernard, passed away on February 24, 2026, at Hawkeye Care Center in Asbury.

Friends and family may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A wake service will be held at 3:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1870 St. Ambrose St., with Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Catholic Church Cemetery in Bernard, Iowa. Military Honors will be accorded by the Cascade Legion Post #528 and the Iowa Army National Guard.

Jack was born on the Cannon Century Farm in Bernard, Iowa, on November 12, 1927, the son of Joseph and Agnes (Grace) Cannon. He attended 12 years of school at St. Patrick’s Garryowen and graduated high school in 1945. He was the last remaining member of his class. On March 28, 1951, he was united in marriage to his wife Jeanette Hartmann at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. He worked as a farmer for many years in the Washington Mills area and at the Dubuque Packing Co. for 27 years, and was a member of UFCW 150A. Jack was also a member of both Dubuque American Legion Post #6 and Cascade American Legion Post #528, Bernard & Zwingle Senior Citizens, Holy Ghost Senior Citizens, St. Anthony Catholic Church, and he was a former member of St. Patrick’s Garryowen where he served as a lector and usher. He and Jeanette were members of the West Dubuque Band Parents Booster Club in Cascade.

He is survived by his children: Mike (Cristy) Cannon of Clinton, Mary Jo (Greg) Schoepke of New Berlin, WI, Mark (Mary Jo) Cannon of Dubuque, Pat Cannon of Bernard, Ann (Rich) Lewitzke of Watertown, WI, Sue (Paul) Eaves of Richardson, TX, Dan (Lisa) Cannon of Mount Vernon, Dave (Salena) Cannon of Wylie, TX; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law Dawn Cannon, sister Janaan (Jay) McDonald, and brother Thomas (Frances) Cannon.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, as well as the nurses and staff at Hawkeye Care Center for all the care given to Jack.

Nancy L. Leitzinger

Nancy L. Leitzinger, 78, of Galena, IL, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 following a short battle with cancer.

Family and friends may call from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026 at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, IL, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, with Deacon Mike Timmerman officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.

Nancy was born on June 5,1947 in Hazel Green, WI, the daughter of Donald and Betty (Turner) Richardson. She was united in marriage to William “Bill” Leitzinger on June 1, 1968. Nancy was a graduate of Galena High School, the class of 1965.

She was formerly employed at KFC in Galena and retired from the Galena Post Office in 2003 after 25 years of service.

Nancy along with her mom and sisters operated the gift cart at the nursing home for many years. She enjoyed the annual “Sisters” shopping trip and sitting on the front porch in nice weather, playing Uno with the grandkids on the holidays and loved riding with Bill on the Spider motorcycle. On her mother Betty’s birthday, the girls went out for a meal, and after the meal enjoyed a glass of peppermint schnapps.

Surviving is her husband, Bill; four children, Deb (Terry) Wienen, Mike (Kayla), Tom and Pam Leitzinger; eight grandchildren, Reece (fiancé Lauren), Hannah (fiancé Brandon), Max, Austin, Ryan (fiancé Gracee), Adison, Avery and Joseph; three sisters, Carolyn (Jack) Creighton, Connie Wienen, and Marsha (Drew) Potthoff.

Norene J. Millman

Norene June Millman, 85, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, with her family by her side.

Family and friends may visit on Sunday, March 1, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. A funeral service will be held following the visitation at 2:00 p.m. with Deacon David Roth officiating. Private family burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

She was born on June 19, 1940, the daughter of Norman and Irene (Baumgartner) Story. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1958. Norene married William (Bill) Millman on November 27, 1958, at St. Mary’s Church in Dubuque, IA. They were married 63 years; together they raised five children.

Through the years Norene enjoyed making and decorating cakes. She also loved playing Keno, her yearly fishing trips to Minnesota and playing Euchre with family and friends.

Norene was a foster grandparent at Marshall Elementary School and a bus attendant for the Dubuque Community School District. Norene and Bill owned and operated the Ten Pin Tap Tavern for many years.

She is survived by her four children, Wanda Simpson, Dora (Wayne) Huseman, Norman (Angie) Millman and Midge Fiasco; daughter-in-law Dawn Millman; six grandchildren, Brooke (Jeff) Carroll, Adam Millman, Andrew (Rachael) Millman, Alex Millman, Hunter Millman, Tanner Millman; grand daughter-in-law, Teresa Simpson; six great grandchildren, Seth Simpson, Carter Simpson, Violet Carroll, Addelyn Millman, Mara Millman and Emmie Millman; along with her sister Anita (Gerald) Pleiser.

Norene was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Irene Story; her husband, William Millman; son, Randy Millman; mother and father-in-law, Oscar and Mildred Millman; grandson, Billy Simpson and son-in-law, James Fiasco.

Corrine M. Ploessl

Corrine Mae Ploessl, 68, of Dubuque, IA, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

No services will be held at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family.

Cory was born on January 1, 1958, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of James and Lois (Kennedy) Ploessl. She graduated from Loras College with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice. She worked at her mother’s restaurant, Dubuque Stamping and Manufacturing, and Wendy’s.

She loved gardening and the outdoors. Her family always came first, she adored her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cory was very proud of earning her college degree, it was one of her greatest accomplishments.

Cory is survived by her children, Peggy Jo Blackburn of Dubuque, and Robert Blackburn of Dubuque, 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, three brothers, and four sisters.

She is preceded in death by her daughter Billie Jo, her parents, grandparents, a sister and brother, many aunts and uncles, along with a special friend Neil Winger.

Susan K. Denlinger

Susan K. Denlinger, 71, of Dubuque, IA passed away at home on February 20, 2026, surrounded by her adoring family.

To honor Susan’s life, a wake service will be held from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. Friday, February 27, at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where a visitation will follow from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1425 Iowa Street with Rev. Dennis Quint officiating. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Susan was born on March 30, 1954, in Dubuque as one of seven children to Joseph and Arlene (Hook) Olsen. She married the love of her life, James (Jim) Denlinger, on October 10, 1975, at St. Patrick’s Church and they were blessed with 50 years of marriage and two children, Jason and Julie, along with three grandchildren.

Susan was a stay-at-home mother for the first years of her children’s lives and was actively involved in the wide range of interests of her son and daughter including camping, music, swimming lessons, skits/plays, sports, and Scouts. She was known for her ability to make a variety of different crafts and generously gave them to neighbors, friends, teachers, dentists, or those suffering a loss. She was often referred to as a second mom by childhood friends of Jason and Julie. She later worked for the Dubuque Community School District for eighteen years as a lunch lady and dressed up for every holiday to make the children smile. She loved everything about the holidays from decorating, baking treats, dressing up, but most of all spending time with family. As her children grew up and ventured away from home, she would travel with Jim to visit them in North Carolina, Colorado, New Orleans, and even Mozambique.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her three grandchildren, Kael, Madelyn, and Emmett. She was known as “Fix-It Grandma” for repairing toys, sewing Barbie clothes, and baking birthday cakes. The memory of Susan’s laugh will provide comfort to her friends and family along with countless other memories.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Arlene; father- and mother-in-law, Virgil and Norma Denlinger; brother, Randy Olsen; sister, Linda Decker; and brother-in-law, Thomas Denlinger.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Susan, include her husband James Denlinger; children, Jason (Berta) Denlinger and Julie (Shane) Bakey; grandchildren, Kael and Madelyn Bakey and Emmett Denlinger; Godson and nephew, Justin (Casey) Heim; siblings, Ronald (Shelby) Olsen, Jerry (Kathy) Olsen, Jean (Ronald) Heim, and Ann Olsen, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and extended family in Mozambique.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Susan may be given to Hospice of Dubuque, Alzheimer’s Association, or Bell Tower Theatre.

Harold J. Herrig

Harold J. “Bud” Herrig, 99 of Bellevue, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at his home surrounded by his family.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026, at St. Donatus Catholic Church in St. Donatus. Wake Service will be at 1:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 4:00 pm on Sunday, March 1, 2026 at Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue. Additional visitation will be 9:00 am – 10:00 am prior to Mass at the funeral home.  Burial will be in St. Donatus Catholic Cemetery in St. Donatus.

Harold was born February 3, 1927, the son of Anton and Regina (Huilman) Herrig.  He married Cleta Kueter on October 4, 1949 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue.  Harold enjoyed the simple things in life, such as his feed store visits and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandsons. He was a steward of the land and took great pride in preserving what God created.  He was one of the first in Jackson County to incorporate contour strip practices to conserve soil.  In 1986 he was awarded the Jackson County Conservation Award for his efforts.  He and Cleta received the Heritage Farm Award in 2008.  Harold and Cleta worked side by side on the farm while raising their family.  He was a man of great faith and believed God would provide for him.  He was a lifetime member of St. Donatus Catholic Church, active in Parish Council and Holy Name Society.  Harold also served as a Tete des Morts Township Trustee.

Survivors include his loving wife of 76 years, Cleta; children, Ruth (Steve) Seipp, Steve (Nan) Herrig, Jim Herrig, and Larry (Wendi) Herrig; grandchildren Jennifer Faley, Justin Herrig, Ryan (Stephanie) Herrig, Jacqueline (Jason) Evans, Scott (Nicole) Herrig, Katherine (Tom) Heiar, Caroline (Connor) Floyd and Jonathan Herrig; 11 great-grandsons Quinlan, Cormac, Elliot, Ray, Wesley, Alec, William, Simon, Oliver, Lane, and Levi; a sister Rita Herrig, a sister-in-law Armella Kueter; god daughter Rita Schmidt; close family friends Mary Upton and Cleta Deppe; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Herrig; a sister Thelma (Kenneth) Miller; sisters and brothers in-law, Milo (Mary) Kueter, Greg (Imelda) Kueter, Paul Kueter, Elaine (Quentin) Schumacher, Ceil (Lorin) Hager, Nestor Kueter, Ralph Kueter, and Bernice (Dick) Ehlers; and godson Mark Miller.

Bill Adams

Bill Adams, 39- forever, peacefully passed away on February 23, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was the youngest of four children born to Edmund and Madelin (kirtz) Adams in Meyer, IA, attending schools in both Meyer and Little Cedar. On September 30, 1967, Bill married JoAnn Urbain. They had four children and raised them in Farley. After JoAnn passed away in 1997, Bill married Karen Kennedy on April 17, 1998.

Bill had many jobs throughout his years, ending with 30 years spent with the Western Dubuque School District at Cascade High School. Bill and Karen enjoyed their retirement for 21 years, split between Dyersville and Mesa, AZ. Bill loved golfing (especially the Big Cup tournament), playing bingo, poker, cards, and organizing gatherings/happy hours to celebrate holidays or just the everyday fun of life. Everyone knew him as an avid Chicago Cubs fan, and he was lucky enough to attend a 2016 World Series game. With luck on his side, he enjoyed stopping at casinos, playing blackjack, and never missing a side bet. He especially enjoyed teaching his grandkids how to play the card game “31.” Bill devoted countless hours designing his train display with multiple tracks running through towns and mountains. It was always a hit with both adults and kids. Most importantly, Bill was a devoted husband, proud father/grandfather, beloved friend, and was welcoming to all.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Adams of Dyersville, his children Janette (Tom) Schroeder of Cedar Rapids IA, Alan (Kathy Barnes) of Liberty Township OH, Steve “Howie” (Adrianna Carey) of Chicago IL, and Amy (Chris) McCann of Golf IL and nine grandchildren – Dr. Ryan (Lacey) Schroeder, Tyler (Shannon) Schroeder, Lexie, Cole, and Torie Adams, Chandler Rose Adams, and Rory, Nora, and Lucy McCann and three great-grandchildren (Juniper, Sage, and Linden Schroeder). He is also survived by his sister, Mary Ellen Miller, and brother Bob (Jodie) Adams, sisters-in-law Barb Adams, Jane Sweeney, Ellen Lindauer, Bonnie (Willie) Kiernan, Jane (Jerry) Boge, and brothers-in-law Joe O’Brien, Bruce Cottrell, Bob Kennedy, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife JoAnn, brother Jerry Adams, in-laws Mary Kathryn (Dave) Lassance, Jerome (Ruth) Urbain, Donna (John) Flynn, Elaine (Bud) Decker, George Murphy, Monica O’Brien, Lloyd Sweeney, Don Lindauer, Nora Cottrell, Helen Kennedy, and Joe Kennedy.

Visitation for Bill will be held from 3 to 7 p.m., on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the Reiff Funeral Home at 490 Field of Dreams Way in Dyersville, Iowa, where a prayer service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held after 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the funeral home.

Services for Bill will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville, Iowa with Rev. M. Georges presiding.   Burial will be held at a later date in St. John’s Cemetery in Placid, (Epworth), Iowa.

Esther L. Werges

Esther Louise Werges, 90, of Monona, formerly of Garnavillo, Iowa passed away Monday, February 23, 2026, at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, surrounded by her loving family.

Esther was born on April 15, 1935, in Osterdock, Iowa, to Henry and Hilda (Borcherding) Brase. She had a loving childhood, growing up learning life skills and hard work. After graduating, she met the love of her life, Allen Werges, after he returned from the service. She married Allen Edward Werges on February 10, 1955.

Esther was a faithful child of God and a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. She attended the Messiah Lutheran Church in Panama City, Florida, and attended St. Paul’s and Faith Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa. She spent many years volunteering with her local churches. She taught Sunday School and assisted with the women’s church group. She worked for Avon and Farm Bureau.

Esther enjoyed her animals, lovely flowers, and traveling to Canada and around the United States. From 1988 to 2014, they would spend their winters in Florida. They left the family farm on May 15, 2014, and moved to Garden View Place. She would later live at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon.

Esther is survived by her two children: David Werges, and Pamela (Delvin Glover) Johanningmeier; son-in-law, Sheryl Zittergruen; grandchildren: Lesa (Jason) Reimer, Steven (Lisa) Zittergruen, Tessa (Steve) Shea, Kristopher (Becky) Werges, Kevin (Rachel) Werges, Marcus (Caterin) Werges, Matthew (Carrie) Johanningmeier, Nathan (Missy) Trappe, and Ashlee Johanningmeier; twenty beloved great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Allen in 2025, her parents, Henry and Hilda Brase; daughter, Mary Zittergruen; siblings: Harold Brase, Ruth Noack; in-laws: Raymond Werges Jr. Ila Eye; and a daughter-in-law, Elayne Werges.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be disbursed to various charities by the family.

Visitation will be held from 9 – 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Garnavillo Community Cemetery in Garnavillo. Rev. Tyler Hoey will officiate.

Jerome F. Koppen

Jerome Francis Koppen, of East Dubuque, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2026. Private burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, is entrusted with arrangements.

Jerome was born February 24, 1954, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Francis and Norma Jean (McNamer) Koppen. He attended the Omaha Art School, where he further developed the creativity that would remain a lifelong hallmark of his personality.

He was known for his creativity, positivity, and quiet determination, always pursuing the things that brought him joy. A longtime member of the International Frisbee Disc Association, Jerome was also a Master Gardener and an Ironman competitor. He worked in video production for more than 40 years and was a member of the Laborers’ International Union, Laborers’ Local #43. He spent many years working as a land surveyor and at the Packing Company, and proudly helped run the Dubuque Art & Craft Shows and Flea Market alongside his parents for over 60 years.

He is survived by his brother, Ronald; his niece, Paula Jean Hammel; his great-nephew, Derrick Janson; his great-niece, Brittany (Tony) Zammit and their children; and his step-son, Jayde.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Barbara Jean; and his brother, Steven.

The family extends a special thank you to the nurses, doctors, and staff at the University of Iowa and Hospice of Dubuque for their kindness and exceptional care.

Louise L. Strub

Louise Lorraine Strub, 86, of Dubuque, passed away February 21, 2026.

A celebration of Louise’s life is planned for spring.

Louise Fautsch was born on October 10, 1939, to Louis and Lorraine [Egelhof] Fautsch. She graduated from Academy of the Visitation, Dubuque and the University of Iowa.

She married Richard [Dick] Strub on October 3, 1964, celebrating 56 wonderful years together. Dick passed away February 4, 2021.

Professionally, Louise was a medical technologist at Mercy Hospital and later Dubuque Internal Medicine until retiring in 1991.

An incredibly active and social person all her life, Louise was involved in the following organizations. She was a member of AAUW, Mercy Hospital Service Club and Junior Board of the VNA. She served on the boards of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and the Dubuque Red Cross. She belonged to DSOL, PEO, Mosaics, Jazzercise Dubuque and was a Dubuque Golf and Country Club lifetime member. Her passions for hosting and gardening truly defined her as did her wit and style.

Louise is survived by her children, Lindsey Strub of Chicago and Rick Strub of Barranquilla, Colombia; brothers, Louis [Lou] and Joey Fautsch of Dubuque, Larry and Ann Fautsch of Dubuque and Lee David and Debbie Fautsch of Castle Rock, Colorado.

Louise’s family also extends our most sincere thanks and love to our chosen family, Zoe Casper, Pam and Burt Goffinet, Jim Haas and our indispensable friend and hero, Linda Sullivan.

We extend our deep gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate staff at Stonehill and Hospice of Dubuque.

Donald W. Howes

Donald William Howes, 69, of Dubuque, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, February 28, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2025 Jackson St., Dubuque. Rev. Jonathan Crawford will officiate. Interment will be private at Asbury Cemetery.

Donald was born June 21, 1956 in Dubuque, the son of Harold Otto Edward Howes and Gertrude Marie (Heuer) Howes. He married Lisa Herting in 2009.

He graduated with a BA in Business Administration, Finance, and Marketing from Clarke College in 1999, and also received a diploma in Robotics Technology from National Technical Schools in California. He retired in 2020 as Finance Director at SMG.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Financial Management Association,  International National Honor Society, Rotary International Harris Fellow, and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

Donald was an avid musician, and played drums in London Park, Snowblind, Nothing But Trouble, and Stranded. In his retirement, Donald enjoyed woodworking. He took great joy in his grandchildren.

Donald is survived by his wife, Lisa Howes, of Dubuque, his daughter, Jessica (Cory) Petitgout, of Candler, NC; his step-daughter, Ann (D.J.) Fultner, of Miles, IA; his step-son, Michael (Alissa Benson) Wernimont, of Sherrill, IA; his grandchildren, Rilyn, Odessa, Annaleigh, Larissa, Kendra, and Marcus; his twin brother, Ronald (Barbara) Howes, of Coventry, RI; his brother, Michael Howes, of Dubuque; and two sisters, Deborah (Ronald) Posey, of Hayes, VA, and Rebekah Clarke, of East Dubuque, IL;  his brother-in-law, Mike (Karen) Herting, of CA;  his sister-in-law, Mary (Guy Kennicker) Miller, of Key West, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Thadeas R. Howes; his niece, Katrina Howes; his nephew, William R. Howes; and his sister-in-law, Kelli Howes.
