Velda Schoenfeld

Velda Schoenfeld died Thursday, February 9, 2023, a week before her 95th birthday, at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Friends may call at the Furlong Funeral Chapel from 4 to 7 PM, Tuesday, February 14, 2023. The burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.

She was born in Pearl City, IL, the eldest of eight children of William and Olga (Koeller) Heid. After graduating from Stockton High School, she attended a special teacher training course and taught all 8 grades from 1946 to 48 in rural Hanover, Oak Ridge School, and then Gibbs School. She boarded with the Flynn family and met their handsome young cousin who had just returned from serving in the war. She and Ralph Schoenfeld were married on June 26, 1948, and moved to Galena, he preceded her in death on October 18, 1990. While Ralph worked in County Government positions (ultimately including County Clerk and Treasurer), Velda worked a variety of jobs in factories, cosmetic sales, and probably her favorite of which was serving as a docent tour guide at the Belvedere House, Galena. She and Ralph were very active in the VFW, St. Matthew Lutheran Church, and the Galena Golf Club. Her hobbies included quilting, sewing, gardening, and traveling.

Velda is survived by her daughters, Shari (Kent) Maxwell of Clearwater Beach, FL, and Joanne (Jim) Kouracos of Libertyville, IL; daughter-in-law, Joan Schoenfeld, of Galena; two sisters, Joyce Keenan, of Denver, CO, and Bonnie Anderson, of Warren, IL;  two nephews/foster sons, Rick, and Jeff (Jody) Heid and their son Daniel, all of Galena, four grandchildren, Alex (Caroline) Hansgen of Menomonee Falls, WI; Brittany Hansgen of Charlotte, NC; Ben Schoenfeld, of Galena and Nick Schoenfeld, of Scales Mound, IL; one great-grandson, Ben Schoenfeld of Elizabeth, IL; and her many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Randy in 2021, two brothers, Galen and Sheldon Heid: and three sisters, Linda Outzen, Maralee Thomas, and Doris Busch.

The family would like to thank Dr. Beth Gullone and all the wonderful staff at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. She could not have been in better hands these last three years.

Pamela M. Bennett

The family of Pamela M. Bennett of Dubuque, is saddened to announce her passing on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at the age of 63. There will be a celebration of Pam’s life for family and friends on Tuesday February 14th from 11-2 p.m. at the Dubuque Pizza Ranch.

Pam, daughter of Gene and Madonna (Steffen) Kopp, was born on May 9, 1959 in Dubuque, Iowa. After graduating from Hempstead High School, she moved out West and had a successful sales career. She returned to Dubuque in 1988 and met her partner in life Terry Healy. The two have been together ever since. Pam has two daughters, Shannon and Sherri, who were the light of her life.

Pam will be forever remembered for her contagious smile that could light up a room and her ability to make conversation with just about anyone. She was very creative and loved making jewelry, crafting and taking on DIY projects. Pam was also a fantastic cook, famous for her German potato salad, chicken pot pies and festive enchiladas and margaritas. She enjoyed going out to eat with family, spending time at Eagle Point Park and taking drives down by the river.

As a two time cancer survivor, Pam was a fighter who always faced her health challenges head on. We are truly heartbroken losing Pam, but have peace knowing that she is no longer suffering.

Shirley A. Babka

Shirley A. Babka, 88, was called home peacefully on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Bethany Home in Dubuque, Iowa.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 13, 2023, from 12:00-1:45p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2155 University Avenue, Dubuque. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Shirley was born on January 15, 1935, an only child, to Cecil “Bud” and Pearl Steach in Des Moines, Iowa. They moved to Dubuque when she was a child. She attended Dubuque Senior High School and married her high school sweetheart, James Miller on July 17, 1952, had three sons and lost Jim suddenly at age 23 in 1958. She met her second husband, David Stover as his blind date emergency substitute and they were married on October 15, 1960. David adopted her three sons and they together had three daughters. Shirley lost Dave in the Kansas City, Missouri Hyatt Regency Hotel Disaster in 1981. Finally, a mutual acquaintance brought Edward Babka into her life and they were married on April 30, 1983, becoming a stepmother to his two adult children. Ed passed away in 2016, living a long and full life.

Even though Shirley had more than her share of life challenges, her faith in God pulled her through each one with the grace of a true lady. She was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker and also enjoyed having small dinner parties with friends, playing bridge, Scrabble, baking, knitting and also wrote a book “Please Pass the Platitudes”.

She served as a volunteer and/or board member for many organizations including: Grandview United Methodist Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Chapter MP, P.E.O., Eastern Star, Finley Hospital Sunshine Circle, Mt. Pleasant Home, Linwood Cemetery and the Dubuque Symphony.

Shirley lived a private, yet adventurous life by camping around the United States and then traveling around the world. She joined Ed while attending performing arts together and also contributed to the Dubuque Community through philanthropic efforts.

She is survived by her sons: Douglas (Jean) Stover of Dubuque, IA , Gregory (Peggy) Stover of Marion, IA and Todd (fiancé Lori Blanchard) Stover of Canyon Lake, CA and her daughters: Kimberly (Rodney) Weires of Durango, IA, Kara (Sam) Stover Barreras of Arvada, CO and Kristin (Russ) Griffin of Dickeyville, WI; her stepdaughter Nancy (Carla) Babka of Beverly Hills, CA and her stepson Frank Babka of Minnetonka, MN. She is also survived by over 35 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil “Bud” and Pearl Steach, her husbands, James Miller, David Stover and Edward Babka. She was also preceded in death by her great-grandson, Aarav Frost.

Barbara Furlong

Barbara Furlong, 73, of Dubuque, passed away February 7, 2023.

In keeping with Barb’s wishes, a celebration of life will be held from 2:00-4:00p.m., on Sunday, March 26, 2023 at the Village Cooperative of Asbury Community Room, 5297 Grand Meadows Dr, Asbury, IA.

Barb was born on March 26, 1949 to Al and Madonna (Thola) Unsen.

Barb retired from Mercy Hospital.

Barb was an avid Dubuque Fighting Saints Hockey fan.

In her free time she enjoyed reading and visiting local parks.

Barb’s greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She loved attending all of their events, picking up the kids from school and taking them for a treat at A&W, and making frequent visits to the local library. She also treasured purchasing special Hallmark Christmas ornaments for each grandchild every year. Each ornament held a special meaning and Barb was sure to remember the reason behind each one.

Barb is survived by her children, Tim (Melissa) Furlong, Erin (Eric) Coates, and Shannon (Keefe) Gaherty all of Dubuque; grandchildren, Breyden (fiancé Ally Gibson) Coates, Keagen (partner Makenzi Tranel) Coates, Morgan Gaherty, and Katelyn Gaherty. She is also survived by siblings, John Unsen, Sue Unsen, Jan Williams, Rob Unsen, and Chuck Unsen.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Virtus Scott

Virtus Scott, 91, of Clinton, passed away February 9, 2023. Virtus was born June 12, 1931, the son of Nels and Elizabeth (Ehlers) Scott. He was born at home on a farm near Nashville, IA. Virtus lived at that residence until the age of 3 where he then moved to a farm Northwest of Delmar, known at the Koon place. He lived there until the age of 9, before moving to what would become the family farm Southwest of Delmar. He attended Delmar High School, graduating in 1948.

Virtus was an active member in the 4-H program in Clinton County for many years. He was elected a county officer and enjoyed showing steers at local shows and the International Show in Chicago, IL. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in February, 1953. Virtus completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and was sent to Fort Belvoir, VA for Combat Construction Foreman School. From here he was attached to the Air Force and stationed on the Island of Okinawa, Japan during the Korean Conflict. While in Korea, Virtus was assigned a truck to haul rock, building an air strip 200 ft wide and 9000 ft long. He also served as a Motor Pool Dispatcher. He boarded the boat for home on Christmas Day, 1954. He was honorably discharged in January 1955.

Virtus married his longtime sweetheart, Mary Jean Gerwulf, March 20^th, 1955 at the Lutheran Church in Lost Nation. The couple began farming the family farm that spring. Virtus and Mary Jean had three children, Karen Marie, Kevin Lee and Kathie Michele. Each affectionately known as Sis, Tigger and Sam respectively. Throughout his kids’ growing up years, Virtus was actively involved in their 4-H and FFA activities. He was a 4-H Leader for the Delmar Hot Shots and served on the County Youth Committee, County Extension Council(1 year as president) and a member of the Clinton County Fairboard for 18 years(serving 2 years as president). He was inducted into the Clinton County Fair Hall of Fame in 2002. Virtus also spent time as a member of the Clinton County Pork Producers and the Jackson & Clinton County 100 Bushel Corn Club. He was a dealer for both Funks G and Golden Harvest Seed Corn for 15 years.

Mr. Scott’s love was farming the family farm. However, he also spent time working part-time in the construction field for Crist Construction and Gravert Construction, both of Delmar.  He served 6 years as a substitute rural mail carrier in Delmar while also going to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture ASCS Office in DeWitt as a Field/Office Assistant before becoming a full-time mail carrier for 9 years. He retired in 1998. Several former residents on his route continue to voice to the family that he was the best mail carrier they have ever had. In his retirement, he enjoyed driving cars for Rotmann Motors and Burnett Thiel. He was a member of American Legion Post 75 and a life member of VFW post 3633, both in Maquoketa. He served as Commander for 2 years receiving the All State Commander Award. His favorite past time of all, was attending his grandchildren’s many school and sporting events. He was known to say, “Had I known having grandkids would be so fun, I’d have had them first”.

Virtus is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Jean of Clinton. Son, Kevin (Darcy) Scott of Clinton daughter, Kathie (Leon, Jr) Oberman of Elvira, and son-in-law Kent Brix of Grand Mound. Grandchildren Ryan (Kayla) Brix, Derek Brix, Ashley Brix, Lindsey (DeMarcus) Jackson, Kaitlyn (Scott) Steines, Zachary Scott, Gabbie Scott, Zoey Scott, Jarod Berggren, Kaia Berggren, Adelida Oberman, Allison Oberman, Ella Oberman, Elana Oberman. Great-grandchildren Emery and Jackson Steines, Izabella and Grace Lynn Brix and Kara Brix. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Brix, an infant brother and two sisters, Lola McClimon and Arlene Nolting.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:30 A.M., Monday, February 13, 2023 at Carson Celebration of Life in Maquoketa, Iowa.  Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 A.M. to 11:15 A.M at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa, with military honors.

Jacqueline R. Entringer

Jacqueline R. “Jackie” Entringer, age 85, of Dubuque, passed away at 5:00 a.m., on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at Stonehill Care Center surrounded by her loving family. To honor Jackie’s life, family and friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., on Friday, February 17, 2023, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Friday at Behr Funeral Home with Deacon John Stierman officiating. Following cremation burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Jackie was born on August 23, 1937, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Charles and Gladys (Sawvel) Menadue.

Jackie was a proud life long Dubuquer who attended Prescott and Jefferson schools. She was united in marriage to Donald Fath on October 15, 1954, in Dubuque. They later went their separate ways and she would marry Carl Entringer on August 12, 1976. Sadly Carl passed away on May 27, 2001. A few years later Jackie would find love again with Jack Freiburger, but he would pass away on September 21, 2007, before they had a chance to wed. Jackie was a hard worker. She bartended as several establishments in the tri-state area, and worked at several restaurants. Jackie also volunteered her time at the Dubuque Rescue Mission. She was always willing to help out wherever she could. When she had some free time on her hands Jackie liked to be outside fishing, gathering nuts and hunting for morels. She loved craft projects of any kind and has made several items for family and friends. She also enjoyed curling up with a good book, especially murder mysteries. Spending time with her family was what truly made Jackie the happiest. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.

Jessica K. Theisen

Jessica Kay Theisen, 44, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Bellevue, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.  Local arrangements entrusted with Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am, Saturday, February 18, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue.  Family will greet friends 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Friday, February 17, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue.  Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.

Jessica was born February 3, 1978, the daughter of Jerry and Karen (Junk) Theisen.  She graduated from Bellevue Public High School in 1996.  Jessica then graduated from Loras College with a degree in education.  She taught at St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School in East Dubuque, before moving to Arizona to continue her teaching career.  Jessica achieved her goal of always wanting to be a school teacher and always enjoyed being with her students.  She loved each and every one of her students.  She had a big heart, cherished her time with friends and family, loved taking pictures and scrapbooking.  She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her parents, Jerry and Karen Theisen; her brother, Tyler (Lisa) Theisen; paternal grandparents, Ray and Doris Theisen; maternal grandmother, Babe Junk; nieces and nephews, Livvy and Mya Theisen, Megan (Tyler) Kueter, Jaelyn (Tanner) Scheckel, Josie Theisen, Jenna Theisen, Reese Theisen, Ray Theisen III; a great-nephew, Julien Kueter; aunts and uncles, Jim (Pat) Theisen, Judy (Butch) Merritt, Jeff (Trudy) Theisen, Joe (Lisa) Theisen, Jay (Jenny) Theisen, Jon (Lisa) Theisen, Steve (Elaine) Junk, Tim Junk, Kay (Dave) Konrardy, and Kim (Thomas) Timp; and numerous extended relatives.

Jacqueline M. Steinke

Jacqueline M. “Jackie” (Herum) Steinke, 56, of Dubuque, Iowa was called to her home in Heaven by her Lord Jesus on February 5th, 2023.

Private family celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family.

Jackie was born on July 21, 1966 in Dubuque, Iowa the daughter of Gary and Barbara (Klein) Herum. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and attended NICC and Emmaus Bible School. She was formerly married to Kent Steinke.

She worked for Walmart as a cashier and also on the floor along with working at Goodwill and McDonalds. She was a member of Word of Life Church she was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan. She enjoyed doing cross-stitch, cats, listening to music, and giving gifts. She was a very loving daughter to her parents Gary and Barbara.

Jackie is survived by her parents; Gary and Barbara Herum; brothers Mike (Kim) Herum, of Helena, AL, Scott (Jandell) Herum of Mequon, WI and Terry (Tara) Herum, of Davenport, IA along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister Jodie Smoldt.

Memorials in Jackie’s name may be given to Samaritan’s Purse.

Christle E. Yates

Christle E. Yates, 55, of Clinton, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 A.M., Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10 A.M. at the church.  The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

Christle Elaine was born on June 3, 1967 in Fort Dodge, Iowa.  She was the daughter of D. Burton and Marta (Nicks) Romer.  She was a 1985 graduate of Andrew Community High School and then attended a community college in Rock Island, Illinois.

Christle was a homemaker and had lived in Clinton most of her adulthood.  For the past 22 years she had lived with her husband Paul Yates and their beloved cat Princess.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Paul Yates of Clinton, IA; parents, D. Burton and Marta Romer of Maquoketa, IA; children, Katie (Brett) Adams of Milltown, WI, Michael Felderman of Madison, WI, Eric Housley of Maquoketa, IA, and Brandon Yates of San Antonio, TX; siblings, Todd (Ranae) Romer of Britt, IA, Tim (Tammy) Browning of Spirit Lake, IA, and Janell (Brian) Hansen of Des Moines, IA; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her biological father Larry Welcher, brother Larry Joe Welcher and a sister Erica Welcher.

Richard A. Symonds

Richard “Dick” Arnold Symonds, 79, of Bellevue, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 11:30 am – 4:00 pm, Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Horizon Hall in Bellevue with Tributes and Sharing of Memories at 2:30 pm. Any and all are welcome to come.

Richard was born, January 20, 1944 and raised in Marengo, Illinois. He married Sharyn Lee Conard on June 8, 1963 in Genoa, Illinois, she passed on March 2, 2014. Richard worked in the Chicago area as a property Manager before moving to Bellevue in 2013. He was a member of Bellevue 1st Presbyterian Church, Bellevue Rotary, and a longtime board member of Hospice of Jackson County. Richard drove RTA in Bellevue for a time, enjoyed traveling with Sharyn, road trips, riding his bike and motorcycle, canoeing, and exploring. He was very handy and an avid woodworker and made many special gifts for his grandchildren during Christmas. Richard adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his children, Tracey (John) Rubel of Bellevue, Shireen Symonds of Platteville, Wisconsin, and Richard Luke (Shannon) Symonds of Rockford, Illinois; grandchildren, Paige (Mike) Timm, Carly (Dustin) Boge, Reilly (Alex) Herrera, Samantha Symonds, Alex (Taylor) Symonds-Ruiz, Mackenzie Symonds, and Luke Symonds; great-grandchildren, Levi, Vae’ah, Harper, and Maeve; siblings, Jerry (Colleen) Symonds and Jeff (Donna) Worf; a sister in-law, Lois Symonds; his special puppy, Tommy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sharyn; siblings, Tom and Warren Symonds.

Helen M. Schmitt

Helen M. Schmitt, age 83, of Balltown, passed away at 4:08 p.m., on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at Stonehill Care Center surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Helen’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2023, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 468 Balltown Road, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 2:30 p.m.  There will also be visitation on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at church.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at St. Francis of Assisi Church with Rev. Tyler C. Raymond officiating.  Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Helen was born on April 7, 1939, in Balltown, Iowa, daughter of Arnold M. and Lorene (Cummer) Gansemer.

Helen attended school in Balltown and went on to attend beauty school.  She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Ronald Schmitt, on October 10, 1959, at St. Francis of Assisi Church.  The couple have 4 wonderful children together and celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last year.  Helen was a faith filled woman who was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church.  She volunteered countless hours at the parish taking care of anything that needed to be done.  Helen had a strong work ethic, a trait she passed on to her children.  She helped out on the farm when she was young before going to work at Sorbo’s where she sewed baby clothes.  After finishing beauty school, she worked in the salon at Roshek’s before opening her own salon in Balltown.  She also drove school bus for the Western Dubuque School District for 24 years before officially retiring.  Her community was very important to Helen.  She helped out at Breitbach’s Country Dining wrapping silverware, answering the phones, and even made breakfast for all of the workers during the rebuilding process after the fires.  In her free time Helen put her seamstress skills to work.  Helen made clothes for all of the children and was a fantastic quilter who looked forward to spending time with her fellow “Sew Flakes”.  She was an outstanding wife, mom and grandma who was always present for the kids and grandkids events.  She was a wonderful woman who definitely made the world around her a better place.  We will miss her tremendously!

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Molly; 2 great-grandchildren, Keagan and Kendrick; a sister, Betty (Jim) Wilgenbusch; and a brother-in-law, Clete Schuster.

Helen’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice of Dubuque, especially Jessica and Amy D., Stonehill Care Center and UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital for all of the care they provided for Helen.  Also a heartfelt thanks to Mike and Cindy Breitbach for all of their friendship throughout the years.

Albert J. Roth

Albert J. Roth, 90, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at his home with his family by his side.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 12:00 pm (Noon) until 1:30 pm on Friday, February 17, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Crematory, Dubuque. The family invites you to show your team spirit by wearing Cubs or Hawkeye attire to his Celebration.

Al was born April 12, 1932, in Bellevue, Ohio, the son of Otto and Anna Roth. On June 24, 1961, he married the love of his life, Patricia Demkier at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Dubuque.

As a child he dreamed of seeing the Mississippi and his destiny was to live on its banks.

Al had a long career as an educator at Marshall Elementary School, teaching generations of families. He and Pat also owned Roth Ceramics, creating beautiful ceramics pieces sold  at many local locations. When they weren’t working they enjoyed their time together at the casinos and dog track.

Instead of fortune or fame, Al’s treasure was his family. He and Pat raised a family of five children with love and pride. Summers were spent camping at Lake Joy enjoying swimming, fishing and baking cherry pies and singing around the campfire. Al loved nature and the earth. He grew bountiful vegetable gardens and beautiful flowers, enjoyed caring for his lawns and loved making applesauce with his apples every fall. Al had a deck full of bird feeders and corn for the squirrels, loved bees and always looked for the first robin and fireflies of the season.

Jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and the daily Jumble kept him sharp and learning until his final days. Al was a die-hard Cubs fan and Hawkeye supporter, flying the “W” after each win, especially the World Series. He was a loving and fun grandfather and great grandfather; his grandchildren will cherish memories of being pushed on the swing, playing fungo, and annual popcorn and cheese trips. Al had a quick wit with an infectious smile and twinkle in his eye (especially for his wife Pat) and hated to waste time waiting at red lights and for appointments. Memories of this amazing man will be cherished by all who had the honor of knowing him and his spirit will live on as his legacy through his family. He had an old soul with the wonder and innocence of a young heart.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 62 years, Patricia Roth of Dubuque, three children, Linda See of Dubuque, Kevin (Jill) Roth of Coralville, and Brian (Paige) Roth of Iowa City and daughter-in-law, Bambi Roth of Dubuque; nine grandchildren, Damian (Ashely) See, Brandon See, Andrew Roth, Jami (Zak) Williams, Celeste (Brian) Frehner, Erica Roth, Corey Roth, Justin (Danielle) Roth, and Jayden Roth; and three great-grandchildren, Westin and Braxtin Williams and Felix Frehner. He was preceded in death by his parents; two children, David Roth and Karen (Mike) Johnson; and his twelve siblings.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Dennis A. Bennett

Dennis “Denny” A. Bennett, 80, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on February 7, 2023, at Stonehill Care Center surrounded by his family.

According to his wishes there will be no public services. A private burial service will take place at Dubuque Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

Denny was born on August 12, 1942, in Boone, Iowa, son of Arthur and Annabelle (Nelson) Bennett.

He was united in marriage to Nelda Neuhaus Doty on August 24, 1985, in Dubuque.

Denny is survived by his wife Nelda, children Randy (Candy) Bennett of Beresford, SD, Julie Tornberg of Beresford, SD, Bruce Bennett of Lex, SD, and Bruce (Christina) Bennett of Boone, IA, step-daughter Jennifer Lynn of Dubuque, IA, eleven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, brother Rex (Otto DeLeon) Bennett of Napa, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Michael Benne, and two step-sons James and Jeffery Doty.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Stonehill and Hospice of Dubuque especially Courtney and Nicole, for all the great care they gave to Denny.

Robert E. Smrcina

Robert E. “Bob” Smrcina, 87, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, February 7, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 11, 2023, at the Church of the Nativity, with Rev. Msgr. James Miller officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion, Post 6 of Dubuque immediately following. A visitation will be held from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the church. Burial will be at a later date at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Monona, Iowa.

Bob was born on July 27, 1935, in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, the son of George and Mary (Tesar) Smrcina. He spent much of his childhood with his many cousins getting into just the right amount of trouble. After graduation from Prairie du Chien High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force.  Bob served from 1954 – 1958 and was stationed in Chateauroux, France for two years. He was proud of his military service and was lucky enough to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

He married Roberta “Bobbi” Berns on April 25, 1964, at the Church of the Nativity. Bob was a true gentleman and with the love of his life, Bobbi, they spent 57 wonderful years together, enjoying travel to Hawaii, Alaska, and Ireland as well as bus trips to destinations across the US. Spending time with his children and grandchildren was his favorite way to spend the day.

Bob was a proud union man and retired from John Deere in 1992. He was a machinist and union steward, insisting Green was the only way to go. After retirement, Bob and his friends regularly met for breakfast to share stories and laughter.

Bob was an avid gardener who enjoyed sharing his produce with neighbors and friends. He loved being outside and could usually be found taking walks, maintaining his beautiful lawn, or tending his garden. You could also find Bob helping others. He quietly found those in need and managed to make their lives a little easier. He didn’t need recognition or thanks for his good deeds, just the satisfaction of knowing his good works were helpful.

He will forever remain in the hearts of his wife, Bobbi; children, Sue (Jack) Pisarek of Poulsbo, Washington, Sherri (Scott) Kerr of Monona, Iowa, and Steve (fiancée Deb Downs) Smrcina of Watertown, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Katie Pisarek, Kristina Kerr, and Kelli Kerr; brother-in-law, Norm Johnson; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Smrcina and Laurayne Duerkop; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim, John (Rosie), George (Norma), Francis “Bud” (Mary), Donald in infancy, and Daniel; and his sisters, Alice (Joe) McGrath, Marie Johnson, Ruth (Tom) McGrath and Shirley Meyer.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque or Camp Courageous.

Mateo F. Crisologo

Mateo F. Crisologo, 77, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on February 5, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

Friends and family may visit from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday February 11, 2023 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with Deacon David Roth officiating.

Mateo was born on September 23, 1945 in the Philippines, son of Raymondo and Teodora (Francisco) Crisologo. He married Erlinda R. Reyes on April 13, 1969, in the Phillipines. He worked for Medical Associates.

Mateo is survived by his wife Erlinda, daughters Roselyn Hanson and Rowena Ayson, son Christopher Crisologo, granddaughter Katelyn Hanson, grandson Spencer Hanson, and many cousins and nephews.
