Alan Wood

Alan Wood, 85, of Baldwin, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

Alan Lieneman Wood was born on December 26, 1939, to Lawrence and Gladys (Lieneman) Wood on the family farm near Nashville, Iowa. He attended Tozer Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1956. On May 4, 1963, he married Linda Marie Brady in Baldwin, Iowa.

Alan proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, receiving an honorable discharge in 1964.

He worked for Clinton Engines in Maquoketa for several years. He then farmed and operated Wood Oil Co., an Amoco Oil dealership in Baldwin, until his retirement in 2003.

Alan had been a member of the Baldwin American Legion Post #513. He enjoyed farm life (especially baling hay), square dancing, fishing with his grandchildren, and camping with family and friends.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Linda Wood of Baldwin; his children, Jennifer (Dean) Engel of Delmar, Joel (Melissa) Wood of Baldwin, and Jonathan (Jessica) Wood of Dubuque; six grandchildren, Megan, Beth, Maranda, Evie, Izzie, and Mayson; three great‑grandchildren, Olivia, Emma, and Gavin, and another on the way. He is also survived by his siblings, Dale Wood, Leon (Chris) Wood, Keith Wood, and Karen Spaete.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant son, Jason; and his siblings, Lois Fogarty and Roger Wood.

Alan will be laid to rest in a pine casket handcrafted with love by his sons.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Buckhorn Cemetery, rural Maquoketa.

Memorials may be made to Christ’s Community Church in Monmouth, Hospice of Jackson County, or a charity of your choice.

Richard W. Pfab

Richard W. Pfab, 88, of Bernard, IA, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Hawkeye Care Center in Dubuque, IA.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2025, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd with a wake service to be held at 2:45 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 .m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Garryowen with Fr. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors accorded by the Iowa Army National Guard.

Richard was born on March 3, 1937, in Bernard, Iowa, the son of John and Viola (Arensdorf) Pfab. He attended St. Patrick’s (North Garryowen) School and was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Church in Bernard. Richard was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, honoring his country with the same dedication and work ethic that shaped every chapter of his life.

On October 18, 1958, Richard married Sandy Maiden at St. Anthony’s Church in Dubuque, beginning a 67-year partnership marked by faith, and devotion to each other. They farmed side by side, raising dairy and beef cattle, hogs, chickens, and occasionally turkeys; and tended large gardens that Sandy and the children harvested and canned. Over the years, they expanded their farm with an additional 160 acres and acquired six rental properties in Dubuque and Asbury, which they continued to maintain. Sandy took charge of painting and interior upkeep, while Richard handled handyman work, lawn care, and snow removal.

Along with being a lifelong farmer who valued integrity, hard work, and service to his community. Richard enjoyed traveling with Sandy all over the world, especially their annual trips to Hawaii, and their many trips to Europe, Australia, and Arizona. They shared a love of dancing, volunteering, and spending time with their growing family. His quiet generosity, strong faith, and willingness to help anyone in need defined the way he lived.

Richard is survived by his wife Sandy; their children Debbie (Gaylon) Heinrich of Springville, IA, Terry (Sara) Pfab of Dubuque, IA, Sherry (Dale) Theisen of Bernard, IA, Kevin (Debra) Pfab of Bernard, IA, Randy (Jessica) Pfab of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Mark (Nancy) Pfab of Glendale, AZ and Traverse City, MI. Together, they formed a close-knit family that was always the center of Richard’s life.

He was especially proud of the generations that followed. His grandchildren—Conway Heinrich, Cassie Watkins, Jamie Heinrich, Ashley Heinrich, Chad Pfab, Mindy Brown, Rachel Fritz, Sebastian Fox, Isiah Pfab, Ryland Pfab, Kaitlyn Adams, Ella Adams, Zachary Adams, Logan Adams, Joshua Theisen, Michelle Menadue, Tony Theisen, Cody Theisen, Mathew Pfab, Elizabeth Turnis, Calvin Pfab, Isaac Pfab, Savannah Pfab, Samara O’Brien-Cirkl, Austin Blackman, and Sydney Blackman; along with his many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, brought him endless pride and joy.

Richard is survived by his siblings:

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law Harry and Velma Maiden; his brothers Raymond, Melvin, Baby Pfab, David, Gary, Leroy, and Clarence Pfab; sisters-in-law Karen Pfab, Pam Pfab, Leslie Pfab, Nancy Pfab, Darlene (Maiden) Plumley and Sharon (Maiden) McVay; brother-in-law Richard Maiden, Dave Conlan, Don Morken; and daughter-in-law Shelley Pfab (Fox).

William Steger

William “Bill” Steger, 90, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025, at home, after a 3-year battle with lymphoma.

Visitation will be from 1:00-4:00p.m., Sunday, December 14, 2025, at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, Dubuque. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30a.m., Monday, December 15, 2025, at Holy Spirit Parish-Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Rev. Jeff Frieden officiating. Private Family Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Bill was born on December 29, 1934 to Louis and Edwina (Klein) Steger in Balltown, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Donna (Petsche) Steger and the two shared nearly 70 years together.

Bill worked at the Dubuque Pack for 43 years.

He loved being on the river, snowmobiling, traveling, and spending time with his family.

In his free time, he enjoyed cheering on the Atlanta Braves and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Donna; children, Mark (Carol) Steger of Dubuque, Connie (Jeff) Burbach of Eagle River, WI, and Cheryl (Paul) Richman of Dubuque; grandchildren, Laura (Royce) Dague, Jason (Torie) Burbach, Amanda Burbach, Andy Burbach, Erica (Eero) Wasserman, Angela (Andy) Vasconcellos, and Krista (fiancé Sebastian) Richman; great-grandchildren, Emma, Will, Maggie, Lucy, Tristan, Dakota, Beau, Everly. Bill is also survived by his brother, Gerry (Connie) Steger; and brother-in-law, Allen Lex.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Arnold (Lillian) Steger, Cletus (Joanne) Steger, and Mary Ann Lex.

Ronald G. Dix

Ronald G. “Ron” Dix, 87, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2025 at Unity Point-Finley Hospital in Dubuque, IA.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025 at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, where the parish scripture service will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday. A visitation will be held on Saturday at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m., where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with Fr. Bosco Aruldoss officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque, IA., where military honors will be accorded by members of American Legion Post # 787 of East Dubuque.

Ron was born on September 20, 1938 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Leo M. and Dolores M. (Hefel) Dix. He graduated from Loras Academy in 1956. Ron served in the U.S. Air Force from January 15, 1957 to January 13, 1961.

He was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works retiring on April 30, 1995 after 31 years of service. Ron enjoyed gardening, fishing, meeting with his buddies at Burger King and hanging out at Slaats Auto Repair in East Dubuque. Ron was a huge Iowa Hawkeyes fan., and a former of UAW Local
# 94.

Surviving are his children, Michael Dix of Adel, IA, Michele Brigham of Madison, WI, Jeffery Dix and James (Christine) Dix both of Dubuque, IA; seven grandchildren, Kristi, Alex, Jenny, Jessicca, Cooper, Preston and Paxton; four great-grandchildren, Owen, Theo, Ethan and Andi; siblings, Jeanettte (Dean) Rampson of Dubuque, Bill (Patti) Dix of Dubuque, Linda (Dick) Firzlaff of Dubuque, Judy Dix of Dubuque, Marilyn Dix of Dubuque, Shirley Youngblut of Spirit Lake, IA, Alan (Sue) Dix of Dubuque, Carol (Joe) Powers of Dubuque, and Cheryl (Chuck) Noel of Asbury, IA, in-laws, Bob Hammel and Patricia Dix,  and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Ron in death were his parents, Leo and Dolores, siblings, Bob Dix, Patricia Freihoefer, Daryl Dix, Mary in infancy, Joyce Hammel, Barbara Cummer, Richard “Pup” Dix and Dorothy Koltes.

Ernest M. Gutierrez

Ernest M. Gutierrez, age 93, of Dubuque, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Bethany Home with family by his side.  To celebrate Ernest’s life, services will be held in the spring.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting Ernest’s family.

Ernest was born on March 2, 1932, in Nuevas Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of José Muñoz and Tomasa Gutierrez.

As a young man he came to the United States, working in the fields and as a bus boy.  While moving to different states he also worked on the railroad for many years.  In Minnesota he met Jane Sowell, they courted and then married on August 5, 1957, in Mason City, Iowa.  They were married for 66 ½ years and loved being together.  They complimented each other perfectly, and each had a special role in their lives together.  While living in Illinois he started working at John Deere and was transferred to Dubuque, Iowa in 1972.  He was a line worker and forklift operator, and during layoffs would volunteer for janitorial work.  Ernest was a hard worker and worked to support his family.  He retired after 30 years at John Deere.  Ernest was a member of UAW Local 94 for many years.  He loved to spend time walking by the Mississippi River, and looked forward to trips to Chicago to visit the museums and the shores of Lake Michigan.  He had a great love of nature and animals.  Ernest’s family meant the world to him and he will be greatly missed.

Dean Fenoglio

Dean Fenoglio, 70, of Maquoketa, Iowa, and formerly of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Monday morning, December 8, 2025, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa.

Ansel Dean Fenoglio was born on October 6, 1955, in Knoxville, Iowa, to Burt and Mildred (Hickman) Fenoglio.  He grew up in Knoxville and was a 1973 graduate of Knoxville, Iowa.

Dean’s life was marked by his enduring love for his family and his passion for making the world a better place. He was the most kind and caring man, always putting everyone else’s needs above his own.  On December 7, 1996, he married the love of his life, Julie Nelson, in Knoxville. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Dean’s legacy lives on through his devoted wife, Julie Fenoglio of Maquoketa, IA; his children, Justin (Jessica) Winter of Ottumwa, IA, Zach (fiancée Bailey) Winter of Knoxville, IA, and Kinsey (fiancé Nick) Fenoglio of Decatur, IL; his adored grandchildren, Jaxon, Charlotte, Brekyn, Emmylou Winter, and Charlotte Borgman; and his brother, Terry (Cindy) Fenoglio of Knoxville, IA. His parents and brothers, Bob and Charlie, preceded him in death.

Dean’s professional life was characterized by his dedication to serving others. He retired after 33 years as an Occupational Therapy Assistant for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Knoxville, where he made a significant impact on the lives of countless veterans. In retirement, he continued to work for five years at WALMART in Pella, Iowa, and 4 years at Staples in Marcus, Iowa, where he was known for his kindness, friendly demeanor and strong work ethic.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dean was an avid sprint car racing fan. His love for racing was more than a hobby; it was a passion that fueled his spirit. He relished the thrill of the race, the roar of the engines, and the camaraderie of fellow racing enthusiasts. Dean also enjoyed working on sprint cars in his youth and shared his knowledge with others.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating Dean’s life will be held from 12 to 2 P.M. with a time of sharing beginning at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, December 12, 2025, in “The Bistro” at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.

Carol J. Yeager

Carol J. Yeager, 82, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, December 8, 2025.

Carol Jean Clark was born on December 28, 1942, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Lloyd Howard and Bernice Glenn (Haylock) Clark.  She was a graduate of Maquoketa High School and then attended the University of Iowa for one year.  She married Merlyn James Yeager on April 8, 1962, at First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Carol had first worked at the local ASCS Office, and later for the Maquoketa Schools Lunch Program.  She most notably worked for over 30 years as a secretary for People’s Natural Gas in Maquoketa, and from 1960 to 1974, she also helped with the family business, Yeager’s TV and Appliance.

Carol was a member of First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, and the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority.  She enjoyed snow skiing, gardening, boating on the river, flying and traveling with Merlyn, and watching sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Merlyn Yeager of Maquoketa, IA; children, David Yeager of Maquoketa, IA, and Michael Yeager of Maquoketa, IA; 4 grandchildren, Tyler, Hannah, Jenna, and Caitlin; and 5 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her mother Bernice, her father Lloyd, stepmother Barbara, an infant daughter Susan, and her son James “Jay” Yeager.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 A.M., Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home.  Burial will be at the Buckhorn Cemetery, rural Maquoketa.

Lt. Col. Robert W. Burton

Lt. Col. Robert W. “Bob” Burton, a proud Vietnam Veteran, age 96, of Galena, IL, and Panama City Beach, FL, completed his earthly journey on December 2, 2025, at home while surrounded by his loving family.  To honor Bob’s life, a memorial service will be held at the Grace Episcopal Church in Galena at a later date.  Entombment will be in the church mausoleum.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Bob’s family.

Bob was born on June 15, 1929, in Flint, MI, a son to Frank and Shellie (Emerson) Burton.  He went on to honorably serve his country with the U.S. Army for 30 years as an anesthesiologist until his retirement.  Bob always enjoyed spending his summers in Galena and making his way to Florida in the winters.

Joseph D. Bergfeld

Joseph D. “Danny” Bergfeld, 81, of Bernard, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at 11:00 p.m. at his home with his wife and granddaughter, Brandie by his side.

Visitation for Danny will be held from 9 to noon on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Peosta, Iowa, where services will be held at noon with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating.  Burial will be held in Holy Family Cemetery in New Melleray-rural Peosta, Iowa.

Danny was born October 15, 1944, in Zwingle, Iowa, son of John and Veronica (Jaeger) Bergfeld.  He received his education in the rural Bernard area schools.

On March 20, 2001, he was united in marriage to Diane Kearney in Dubuque, Iowa.

He farmed all his life until his retirement six years ago.  He enjoyed helping his nephew, Don with construction for a couple of years, because he had never worked off the farm and wanted to experience working for someone else.  He enjoyed traveling, fishing, and hunting.  He enjoyed being around family, especially his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Bergfeld of Bernard; his children, Bob (Hannah) Bergfeld and Bev (Bartley) Welch both of Dubuque; Diane’s son, Chad (Carree) Kearney of Cascade; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and one great grandchild, due in march 2026; two siblings George (Joanne) Bergfeld of Peosta, Julianne Schumann of Dyersville; his sisters and brothers-in-laws, Shirley Bergfeld of Dubuque, Sharon Reittinger of North Carolina, Dave, Tom, and Don Kearney all of Zwingle and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother-in-law, Clarence and Catherine Kearney; a son-in-law, Steve Luster; his sisters, one in infancy, Gladys (Jack) Kress, Darlene (Joe) Dolanc, Theresa (Clem) Gansemer; three brothers, Leo Bergfeld, John Bergfeld and Ed (Juanita) Bergfeld; a brother-in-law, Elmer Schumann; nephews, Merlin Kress, Jim Schumann, and Steve Bergfeld; his nieces Donna Dolanc and Judy Brietspecker.

Darlene Pearson

Darlene (Gugisburg) Pearson, age 90, of Asbury, IA, and formerly of Renwick, IA, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Hawkeye Care Center in Asbury. A private family celebration of life will be held later as was Darlene’s wish. Her burial will be in the Vernon Township Cemetery in Renwick. Tri-State Cremation Center is assisting the family.

Creativity and education were central themes throughout Darlene’s life. Following graduation from Renwick high school, she married Marvin Pearson and embarked on a career teaching elementary school. She began teaching in Nebraska before returning to Renwick to teach third grade for most of her 30-plus year career.

Throughout her life, she particularly enjoyed the performing arts, both directly and indirectly. In high school she was an accomplished clarinetist and singer. She used her creative writing skills to compose plays at church, write skits for community social events, and help numerous students at Boone Valley High School develop compositions for speech contests. Darlene and Marv spent winters near Casa Grande, Arizona, forming treasured friendships. They were active in the retirement community band where Darlene sang, played piano, and wrote performance programs.

Darlene’s other interests and hobbies included collecting antique dishes and jewelry pieces as well as working on art projects in various media. She loved her family and was fortunate to celebrate 68 years of marriage with Marv before he passed earlier this year. She was a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Left to honor her memory are her son, Doug (Sue) Pearson, and their children, Molly (Brad) Acree, Nick and Sally; daughter, Lisa (Todd) Stevenson, and their children, Nate (Heidi), Nick (Rachel), Zach (Megan) and Jake; her great-grandchildren, Emma, Violette, Becker, Brooks, Bryant, and Nick; her sister-in-law, Melva Acker; her niece, Terri Schoonover; and her nephew, Jim (Mary) Green.

Jennifer A. Eddy

Jennifer (Jen) A. (Knockel) Eddy, 47, of West Des Moines, formerly of Bellevue, IA, passed away peacefully with her husband, Ryan Eddy, by her side on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Every Step Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

 A Celebration of Life gathering will be held 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, Friday, December 12, 2025 at Horizon Lanes in Bellevue, Iowa. Private family burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.

 Jen married Ryan Eddy on October 9, 2004.

Jen taught at Christ the King School and Waukee Community School District, both in the Des Moines area, for many years.

Her favorite hobby was watching her boys’ sports activities. Her and Ryan built a community of friendship and family with other parents cheering on their sons’ teams. Jen was also an avid Hawkeye fan.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ryan, of West Des Moines, and two sons, Nile and Ty, both in Des Moines, her parents, Mike and Jeanne Knockel of Bellevue, IA, a brother, Jason (Tina) Knockel, Dubuque, IA, her mother-in-law Janelle (Phil) Eddy, of Parkersburg, IA, sister-in-law, Amy Hosch of Des Moines, brother-in-law, Rusty (Julie) of Parkersburg, IA, and several nieces and nephews.

Jen is preceded in death by her grandparents Arnie and Mary Sturm and Herb and Evie Knockel.

The Eddy and Knockel families would like to thank Every Step Kavanaugh House in Des Moines for the excellent care they gave to Jen these last few weeks.

Linda J. Scott

Linda J. Scott, 83 years old, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, with her family by her side at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4 to 7 pm at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, IA, on Friday, March 6, 2026. A private burial service will occur at a later date in Kossuth Cemetery in Mediapolis, Iowa.

Linda was born on July 17, 1942, in Burlington, Iowa. She was the daughter of Robert F. and Jean Ruth (Breuer) Rule. She graduated from Burlington High School and went on to earn her nursing degree from Mercy School of Nursing. Linda worked at the Mount Pleasant Hospital where she was in charge of six wards for three years before moving to Iowa City, Iowa, to work in the Psychiatric Unit at the Veterans Administration Hospital.

In Iowa City, Linda met her future spouse, Dr. Edward H. Scott, who was completing his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Iowa. They were married on June 11, 1966. Following his residency, the couple moved to Dubuque and Edward began his long and successful career at Medical Associates. Together, they built a wonderful life – raising three children, traveling together on many memorable trips to five out of the seven continents, and developing long-standing friendships with others in their community. Edward preceded her in death on September 21, 2014.

Linda was dedicated to her community and gave generously of her time including serving on the boards of the Dubuque Visiting Nurse Association as well as the Mount Pleasant Home. She was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter GE and the Finley Service Club.

Linda was an avid reader. There weren’t many mysteries that she had not read and attempted to solve. Her love of books led her to volunteer weekly at the Carnegie Stout library with a group of friends, “The Tuesday Morning Ladies,” led by Mrs. Eileen Coursey. She enjoyed to play and to watch tennis. She also enjoyed watching Iowa men and women basketball games as well as Chicago Bull basketball games because she played six-on-six girls high school basketball in Burlington. She was an active grandmother to her grandchildren and, in her later years, took great joy in watching them prosper academically, athletically and artistically.

Besides her husband, Linda was preceded in death by her parents, by her son, Ian Scott, and by her half-sister, Robin Ginsberg.

Survivors include two sons: Michael (Nicola) Scott of La Crosse, WI, and Colin (Karen) Scott of Dubuque; one daughter-in-law, Melissa Scott of St. Louis Park, MN; and five grandchildren: Henry, Neve, Erin, Georgia, and Will.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff at Luther Manor, Dr. Andrea Ries, and the Mercy ICU staff and nurses for the excellent and compassionate care.

Instead of flowers, the family politely requests that memorial donations be made to either Iowa Nurses Association or MercyOne Dubuque Foundation.

Marilyn M. Bergfeld

Marilyn M. Bergfeld, 89, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Stonehill Communities, surrounded by her loving family.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12th, 2025, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with a rosary to be held at 2:45 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13th, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Key West with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Marilyn was born on March 2, 1936, the daughter of Carlyn and Marie (Gansen) Denlinger. She was the oldest of six children; she grew up on the family farm in rural Dubuque County.

She attended Elementary School in a one room schoolhouse and St. Joseph Key West and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy with the “Class of 1954”. On May 15, 1956, Marilyn married the love of her life, Ralph Bergfeld. Together they raised ten children and built a beautiful life rooted in faith, devotion, and joy; much of it was spent on their family farm where hard work and love were part of every day. Marilyn and Ralph shared 58 years of marriage until his passing in 2014.

For many years, Marilyn worked at Sunnycrest Manor, retiring in the late 1990s. However, her greatest calling—and her true life’s work-was being a mother and caregiver. Her heart was generous, her presence comforting, and her love extended far beyond her immediate family.
Marilyn’s Catholic faith was steadfast and central to her life. She was an active and lifelong member of St. Joseph Parish, Key West.

She will be fondly remembered for her famous homemade long johns, eagerly devoured on Saturday mornings and cherished as a symbol of her warmth and hospitality.

Known as “GiGi” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Marilyn embraced her role as matriarch with joy and enthusiasm. She treasured time spent camping, fishing, playing Skip-Bo, Dominoes, Bingo, and enjoying countless casinos and beach trips. Her legacy of Love spans ten children, twenty grandchildren, and twenty-eight great-grandchildren.

Marilyn will be dearly missed by her children: Thomas (Linda) Bergfeld, Zwingle, Iowa, Cathy (John Ward) Arensdorff, Dubuque, Iowa, Mary Ann (Robert) DeMeyer, Cassville, Wisconsin, David (Delphine) Bergfeld, Epworth, Iowa, Laurie (James) Decker, Bellevue, Iowa, Lisa Frederick, Dubuque, Iowa, Martin (Angie) Bergfeld, Bernard, Iowa, Joani (Bill Brus) Bergfeld, Cascade, Iowa, Ami (Nick) Koos, Monmouth, Iowa and Mike Wild, Dubuque, Iowa.

Marilyn is also survived by her sister, Luann Weber; her in-laws Gib Clemen and Margie Bergfeld; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ralph; her daughter, Sara; her parents, Carlyn and Marie Denlinger; her in-laws, Clem and Margaret Bergfeld; her siblings Carol Clemen, John Denlinger, Clair Denlinger, Gladys Wernimont, and godson Gerald Clemen; in-laws Ruth Denlinger, Charlie Wernimont, Milton Weber, Bernard Bergfeld, Mary and Jack Gerdeman, Diane Sieverding, Jim and Clara Bergfeld, Roger Bergfeld, and Joseph Bergfeld.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Eagle Pointe Place, Stonehill Communities and Hospice of Dubuque for the extraordinary care they provided in Marilyn’s final weeks, and to her dear friend, Tag A Long.

May she rest in God’s eternal peace, her gentle spirit forever watching over us.

Leonard H. Ricke

Leonard H. Ricke, 92, of Menominee, IL passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Stonehill Health Center in Dubuque, IA.

Family and friends may call from 9:30 – 11:15 a.m., on Friday, December 12, 2025, at Nativity BVM Catholic Church, in Menominee, IL where the Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:30 a.m. with Father Bosco Aruldoss officiating. Burial will follow in the Nativity BVM Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of American Legion Post #787.

Leonard was born February 8, 1933, to Victor and Mary (Kass) Ricke. He attended grade school at St. Patrick’s and high school at St. Columbkille’s, both in Dubuque, IA. He then transferred to East Dubuque High School where he loved playing sports; graduating in 1951.

Leonard was drafted to the US Army in early 1953 and served in Korea as a Clerk Typist. He was then promoted to Operations Sergeant with the Headquarters of the 7^th Infantry Division. After his honorable discharge, he became a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #787, East Dubuque, IL.

He married Shirley A. Wiederholt on September 25, 1956 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in rural Hazel Green, WI. Together they had 6 children and were blessed to celebrate 60 years of marriage in 2016. Leonard was a Self-Employed General Contractor that built many homes in the area and also remodeled several historic buildings in downtown Galena, IL.

He was a volunteer firefighter for the Menominee Dunleith Fire Department and later served as Trustee and President; retiring in 2015. He also served as Trustee for the Village of Menominee for many years; retiring in 2017. Leonard was a Director of Jo-Carroll Energy for 30 years serving as both Secretary and Vice Chairman. He was also a Director for Dairyland Power of LaCrosse, WI and later became a Member of the Illinois Statewide Cooperative in Springfield, IL.

One of Leonard’s favorite hobbies was growing vegetables and apples. You could find him weekly at the Farmer’s Market in Galena, IL. He also enjoyed hunting, ice fishing and spending time with family.

Surviving are his children, Dan (Laura) Ricke, Ron Ricke, Darryl (Janet) Ricke, all of Menominee, IL and Dennis (Roseanne) Ricke of Lisbon, IA; son-in-law Mark (Dawn) Fluhr of East Dubuque, IL; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, with one great-grandchild set to arrive any day now; his sister Eunice Burroughs and in-laws Ardelle “Toots” Leibold, Doris Wiederholt, Everett Runde and Judy (Carl) Timmerman.

He was proceeded in death by his parents Victor and Mary Ricke, wife Shirley, and daughters Linda Kern and Carol Fluhr; brother-in-law Karl Burroughs; in-laws Mike and Alice (Pluym) Wiederholt, Eileen “Beaner” Wiederholt, Donald (Anna Mae) Wiederholt, Kenneth Wiederholt, Phyllis Runde, Donna (Bob) Tippett and Pete Leibold.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Mercy, Hospice of Dubuque and Stonehill Health Center. In lieu of flowers, a Leonard H. Ricke Memorial Fund has been established.

As we say goodbye, we remember the words of Louis Armstrong, a song Leonard held close to his heart: ‘I think to myself… what a wonderful world.’ Our world was truly more wonderful having our Dad and Grandpa in it.

Jeffery J. Steffensmeier

Jeffery J. Steffensmeier, 58, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and formerly of Farley, Iowa passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa, from injuries sustained in a farm accident.

Friends and relatives of Jeff may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, December 12, 2025, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Farley, where a wake service will be held at 3:30 p.m.  Visitation will also be held after 9 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Services for Jeff will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 13, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Farley, Iowa, with Rev. Christopher Podhajsky presiding and Rev. Steven Garner con- celebrating.  Burial will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Farley, Iowa.

He was born December 5, 1967 in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Wilfred and Andrea (Ries) Steffensmeier.  He attended St. Joseph’s Elementary, was a graduate of Western Dubuque High School in Epworth, Iowa, and attended Iowa State University.  He was employed at Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank as the Vice President/Senior Business Banker.  He was proud of his banking career as a loan officer and manager.  He was a mentor for many individuals in farming and banking.

He was an avid fan of the Hawkeyes and Cyclones.  He loved to coach youth baseball and was a coach for the Anamosa High School football team.

Jeff was a very proud father who loved his family.   He enjoyed working on the farm, helping his father.  He was a faith-filled individual.  He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the Cedar Rapids Rotary Club.

He is survived by his children, Andrew Steffensmeier of Cedar Rapids (Kaitlyn Bastin), Adam (Kayla) Steffensmeier of Ames, IA and Allyson Steffensmeier of North Liberty, IA; his father, Wilfred Steffensmeier of Farley, IA; two brothers, Jason (Carmen) Steffensmeier of Farley, IA, and Joe (Janette) Steffensmeier of Coralville, IA; two nephews, Jared and Cody; a niece, Sienna; and aunts and uncles.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Andrea Steffensmeier on Apr. 9, 2023; one brother, Robert Steffensmeier in infancy; and many aunts and uncles.
