Randy J. Wieseler

Randy James Wieseler, 62 of Dubuque passed away Saturday, December 17, 2022. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at the Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A funeral service will begin at 6 p.m. with Pastor Carter Jorgensen officiating. Military Honors will follow the service by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. A celebration of life and burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Randy was born on December 22, 1959, in Dubuque, the son of Kenneth and Lorraine (Gottschalk) Wieseler. He grew up in the Sherrill and Dubuque area, and later went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps. After his service, he returned to Dubuque and married Kristi Oberfoell. Although they later separated, they did an exceptional job raising three children. He never remarried, but always had his lifelong friend, Angel Puccio, by his side. He worked for many years at Area Residential Care; a job he enjoyed so much he spoke about it for many years to come. He also worked at Metz Baking.

Randy had many passions in life. He could often be found at Next Phase singing karaoke, and would love to sing and play guitar for anyone who would listen. In fact, he got great enjoyment out of going to nursing homes to perform for the residents, and appreciated that they didn’t really care if he fumbled the words. He was also very passionate about the children he had later in life: his cats. We know that Peanut, Baby and Ozzy are very happy to have him home. He loved his camper and taking it down to Camp 17, even when it seemed like more trouble than it was worth. Lastly, and the thing that brought Randy the most joy, was being around his grandchildren. Hearing the things his grandchildren had to say made him laugh like nothing else did.

Randy lived his life in a way that was unapologetically his own, without fear of judgement. Because of this, he left a mark on all those he met. The catchphrases that he used on a daily basis are now a topic of remembrance amongst his family and friends. Being around him was a joy, and a constant reminder that you can’t take life too seriously. Although he was a jokester, he truly had a heart of gold. He never left a conversation without a “love you” and his famous last words, “have a good Sunday.” Randy was a beacon of light in the world, and he will be sorely, sorely missed.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his three children, Justin (Stacey) Wieseler, Sondra (Alex) Schumacher and Leah Wieseler all of Dubuque; his lifelong friend, Angela Puccio; his grandchildren, Taylor, Sean, Payton, Logan, Cole, Georgia, Kamiyah, Kamora, Kamryn, and Jr.; his step grandchildren, Jackson, Julien, Jameson, and Dontae; sisters, Diane (Mark) Meier and Deb Kirschbaum; brothers, Richard (Debbie) Wieseler and Tony (Lori) Wieseler; sister-in-law Kim Wieseler; and his uncle who was more like a father, Uncle Lester Motsch.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kenneth Wieseler, Jr.

A Randy J. Wieseler memorial fund has been established.

Richard C. Wolf

Richard C. “Chuck” Wolf, Jr., 84, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue, Iowa.

A gathering of friends celebrating Chuck’s life will be held from 4 to 6 P.M., Friday, December 30, 2022 in “The Bistro” at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.  A private burial will be held at East Side Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa.

Richard Charles Wolf Jr. was born on December 31, 1937 in Elkader, Iowa, to Richard Charles Sr. and Mary Virginia (Bridge) Wolf.  He was salutatorian of the Class of 1956 of Elkader High School.  He then furthered his education at the University of Iowa receiving a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and English.  Additionally, he received his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.  Following graduation, he worked as a librarian at the University of Wisconsin until his father’s death in 1972 when returned to Iowa to care for his mother.  Chuck taught English and Government at Maquoketa High School for 31 years, retiring in 2000.

Chuck was active in the Jackson County Democrats and had served on the Jackson County Compensation Board as well as the Maquoketa Education Fund board.

Chuck was a beloved educator, world traveler, a dedicated Democrat, and a well-respected expert in Depression Era art glass.  In retirement, Chuck judged antiques at several local county fairs, and set up his own antique road shows to appraise antiques.

He is survived by a brother, Mark (Sue) Wolf of Grass Valley, CA.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jo Ella McAllister

Jo Ella McAllister, 68, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on Monday December 19, 2022.

According to her wishes, no public services will be held. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

Jo Ella was born on September 12, 1954, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and June (Hopp) Miller. She graduated from Stephen Hempstead High School in 1972 and worked at Finley Hospital for 22 years.

Jo Ella is survived by her siblings Phillip Miller, Verne (Cathy) Miller, Dori Hook, Jenny Rouse, Sara Jurisic, Joseph (Lisa) Miller, Rich (Gina) Miller and Phillip Miller Jr., and two grandsons whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and a sister.

Shirley A. Scholtes

Shirley A. (Hingtgen) Scholtes, 86, of Bellevue, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2022. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am, Friday, December 30, 2022 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue. Visitation will be 9:30 am – 11:00 am, also Friday, December 30, 2022 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue prior to Mass.

Shirley was born July 5, 1936 in Bellevue, the daughter of Michael and Adeline (Deppe) Hingtgen.  She married Roger Scholtes on July 15, 1976.  Shirley was a science teacher and head volleyball coach at Bellevue Community School for over 25 years.  She was the President of the Jackson County Humane Society and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.  Shirley enjoyed many trips with Roger in their RV over the years, visiting family and friends.  She had a love for animals, playing sports, and cheering the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes.

Survivors include her husband, Roger; step-children, Kim (Scott) Sheldon, Kevin ( Kristie Culver) Scholtes, Rick Scholtes, and Mark (Shannon) Scholtes; sisters in-law, Betty Scholtes, LaVonne Kueter, and Louann Scheckel, and a brother in-law, Jerry Schroeder; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended relatives.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ethel (Howard) Breson; brothers and sisters in-law, Lorin Scholtes, Ronald Kueter, Donald Scheckel, Gene Scholtes, Janet Schroeder, and Leonard (Becky) Scholtes.

A memorial fund has been established in Shirley’s memory.

Eugene Kurt

Eugene Kurt, 84, of Bellevue, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2022. Eugene gracefully donated his body to the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics for science. Private family services and no public visitation will be conducted.

Eugene was born September 19, 1938, the son of Raymond and Edith (Dirksen) Kurt. He married Sharon Jess on April 8, 1961. After high school Eugene went off to serve in the US Marines and upon returning he started his life long love of farming. He also worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years retiring in 1994. Farming and working with cattle was truly what he called a hobby. In addition, he loved to put many miles on his Harley and spend time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; children, Kate (Michael) Elvin and Fred (Julie) Kurt; 4 grandchildren, Taylor (Eric Amerling) Elvin, Joseph Elvin, Mitchell (Yzabella Escobedo) Kurt, and Erin (Declan) Doyle; siblings, John Kurt, Lois Kramer, Ruth (Gerald) Byrne and Jim Kurt; sister-in-law, Diane Kurt; in-laws, Tom Jess and Marty (Joan) Jess; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randall “Duke” Kurt; siblings, Lorraine Kurt, Dorothy Scheckel and Richard Kurt.

Esther J. Thome

Esther J. Thome, 92, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on Monday December 19, 2022, at 9:40 a.m. at MercyOne Dubuque with her loving family by her side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday December 22, 2022, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church 2921 Central Avenue, with Father Steve Garner officiating. Friends and family may visit from 9:00a.m. until the start of Mass at the church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

Esther was born on October 25, 1930, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of William and Pearl (Dornes) Steger. In 1948 she graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque. She was united in marriage to David L. Thome on April 11, 1953, at St. Mary’s Church in Dubuque. She worked as a secretary for John Deere Dubuque Works up until her retirement in 1989. Esther was a member of Holy Ghost Church, Holy Spirit Parish in Dubuque for over 60 years. Her family and faith were the most important things to her.

Esther is survived by her daughters Julie Thome, Lori (Ron) Smith, and Jane (Bob) Walsh, son-in-law Gary (Becky) Valentine, grandchildren David (Samantha) Smith, Michael Smith, Megan (Miguel Gutierrez) Valentine, Matthew (Tatum Mays) Valentine, Samuel (Natasha Heeren) Valentine, and Emily McGrane, and great grandchildren Ryan, Elizabeth, Hunter and Henry Smith, and Liam Valentine.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughters Susan Thome and Mary Beth “Macy” Valentine, her parents, sisters Sister Karol Steger O.S.F., Grace, and Violet Steger.

Thank you to the incredible staff at MercyOne Dubuque for the care and compassion provided to Esther during her final days.

Bruce Ohnesorge

Bruce Ohnesorge, 77, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away Sunday, December 18th at ProMedica Skilled Nursing in Dubuque, Iowa.

Bruce was born on May 19, 1945, in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Robert and Marguerite Ohnesorge.

Bruce was a career soldier.  He traveled and lived in the US and abroad for the United States Army.  While in the Army he served two tours in Vietnam as a Special Ops/Special Forces Paratrooper/Linguist.  When Bruce retired from the Army after 33 years of service his rank was Chief Warrant Officer Five and he was last stationed at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.

While in the Army Bruce earned many decorations, medals, badges, citations, and campaign ribbons including Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and many more.

After Bruce retired from the Army, he worked at NICC as an Economic Development Program Manager.  Once her fully retired he loved watching westerns and spending a few “sheckles” at the casino.

Those left behind by Bruce include his children.  Nickie Ohnesorge, Kim (Kenny) Kruser, John (Terissa) Ohnesorge, Anna-Marie (Aric) Lowe and Nathan Wilson.

His siblings Shirley Williams, Roberta (Jerry) Valentine, Anita White, Rita (Jack) Noel and his sisters-in-law Suzie Ohnesorge and Karen Ohnesorge.

Along with grandchildren and extended family.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; six siblings: Richard Kirsch, Betty Furlong, Dennis Ohnesorge, Steve Ohnesorge, Roger Ohnesorge in childhood, Robert Jr in infancy and is brother-in-law Robert White.

Bruce’s son John would like to thank all the following for helping him take care of his dad in the last several years.  Dubuque Veterans Affairs Clinic, Stonehill Care Center, Christine and all the staff from 24 Hour Care, Ahva living of East Dubuque, the entire staff of ProMedica Skilled Nursing and Rehab and Hospice of Dubuque.

Per Bruce’s request there will be no services and he will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia with full military honors.  Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory , Dubuque, Iowa assisted the family.

Tom McCullough

Angels called upon Tom McCullough on Dec 17, 2022 to bring him to his heavenly home. He was 69 years old and had fought a long and courageous battle with Frontal Temporal Dementia. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held from 3 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd., where a wake service will be at 3:oo p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on December 28, 2022 at the Church of the Nativity. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard.

Tom (a.k.a., Uncle Tommy, Earl and Sgt. Mac) was born Dec 2, 1953 in Cherokee, Iowa to Jean and Thomas L. McCullough. He grew up in Sac City, Iowa and excelled in sports (football, track and basketball). He attended Loras College in Dubuque before graduating from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. He had 2 children, Shannon and Tom and met his future wife, Janet Clendenen, while living in Dubuque. They were united in marriage on Oct 13, 1990 while living in Omaha for 10 years before moving to Cedar Rapids. They built their dream home in Robins, Iowa where they cherished their new home and neighborhood friends and added their beloved golden retriever Maya (his “Buddy”) to their loving home. Tom proudly served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1984 to 1994. He was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War (1990-91) where he was stationed with the 530th MP unit out of Omaha, Nebraska.

Tom had several jobs throughout his life and believed happiness was not seeing how much money you can make, but rather enjoying what you do and making others happy. He did that wholeheartedly throughout his life and is one of the reasons why he was loved so dearly. He had a passion for gardening, which would explain why he loved his jobs at the flower shops and garden centers where he worked. His last place of employment was working at Cedar Memorial Flower Shop, which he truly loved, but was forced to retire due to his illness. His other favorite job was working at the Collins Aerospace Recreation Center where he loved chatting with members and helping out with exercise equipment when needed. Tom had an extended family with his “Hobbit” friends and shared so many fun and wonderful times with them, including road trips to Chicago Cubs games, Hawkeye Football games, annual New Year’s Eve parties in Cascade, canoe trips, Hobbitfest, Oktoberfest in La Crosse, pool parties and just hanging out at the local bars or a friend’s house.

He enjoyed the simple things in life; gardening, nature, birds, trees, taking walks in the park with Maya, the beauty of the mountains, and peaceful waves of the ocean. Anyone that knew him loved his ability to joke around and make you laugh. Tom was a great athlete, and after excelling in sports in school he participated in many sports throughout his life including basketball, softball, volleyball, biking, x-country and downhill skiing, kayaking, swimming and working out at the local gyms. Tom loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and spent countless hours roaming the campus in Iowa City. He was a people person who always took the time to listen and be a true friend. He loved music from a very early age where you could find him dancing on the kitchen table. He took every opportunity to hit the dance floor and sometimes would just dance all by himself. He loved to travel and explore small towns, parks, zoos, museums, bike trails and antique shops. In 2017 he was recognized for his military service in the Gulf War by taking an “Eastern Iowa Honors Flight” to Washington, D.C. with his daughter, Shannon. He was so proud to serve his country and was a true Patriot. Most of all, Tom loved being with family and friends and will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in those he touched and will be forever remembered in our hearts.

Those left to cherish his memories is his beloved wife and best friend of 39 years, Janet, daughter Shannon (Sean) Cowett of Cedar Rapids, son Tom (fiancée Jessica Lampe) McCullough of Ankeny.  He was a beloved brother to his twin sister, Molly (Sonny) Jorgensen of Storm Lake, Erin (Rich Eberle) McCullough of Lake View, Lisa (Andre) Toscano of Manhattan Beach, CA, and brother Peter McCullough of Jefferson. He also leaves behind his Uncle Peter Cosgrove of Cherokee, Iowa, several cousins and many very dear nieces and nephews; Patrick (Kristen), Cathlin, Megan, Erin and Anne McCullough, Burke Grantham (Mark Pattison), Kate (Dan) Conway, Jenny (Mark) Easler, Kirsten (Mike) Byrd, Margaret (Scott) Ekroth, John Roth, Casey Jorgensen, Dallas (Cameron) Sims, Mclaine (Sisomphone) Mahavong, Farrell Jorgensen, Joe, Cavan and Maureen Eberle, Julia, Connor and Andrew Toscano. Also, Becky (Robert) Meier, Jeremy (Shannon) Clendenen, Andrew (Melanie), Alex (Sydney) and Adam Clendenen, Courtney (Matt) Cooley, April Wand, Tim (Bri), Nick (Allison), Brittany, Kayla and Emily Suchanek, Luke and Allan Nauman, Will and Alaina North. He was a beloved brother-in-law to Bill (Sara) Clendenen, Linda (Bob) Brenner, Charlie Clendenen, Sandy (Rick) Brenner, Kevin (Janet) Clendenen, Mary Wand, Nancy (late Marc) Suchanek, Carla (Harlan) Nauman, Jerry and Steve Clendenen and Sharon (Bob) North.

He will be greeted by those who preceded him in death, his parents Jean and Thomas L. McCullough, mother and father-in-law Mary and Elmer Clendenen, brothers Colin, Brian and Tom, sisters Julia, Margaret and Mary. He will join his special friends Dan Hudek and Doug Hines along with his very special niece, Trisha Clendenen and recently departed brother-in-law Marc Suchanek.

Cheri L. Hakanson

Cheri L. Hakanson, age 63, of Dubuque, passed away at 4:24 p.m., on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital.  To honor Cheri’s life, private family services were held.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting the family.

Cheri was born on September 25, 1959, in Mason City, Iowa, daughter of Neil and Charlene (Jackson) Springer.

Cheri was raised in Mason City where she attended high school.  She was united in marriage to Paul R. Hakanson on July 20, 1990, in Canon City, Colorado.  She was a devoted wife, mom and homemaker.  In her free time she enjoyed reading, coloring books and watching TV.  She was a mom to all and loved helping children any chance she could, earning her the nickname “Mama Cheri”.  She was also very proud of her Cherokee Heritage and had a great love of wolves.  Cheri will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Marilyn E. Sendt

Marilyn E. (Blaser) Sendt, 91, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away at 9:50 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2022, at ProMedica Skilled Nursing in Dubuque, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque, with Fr. Dennis Vargas officiating.  Burial in the East Dubuque Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 9:00 – 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church.  The Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque, IL, is serving the family.

Marilyn was born on January 8, 1931, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Koenig) Blaser.  She was united in marriage to Darrell J. Sendt on September 29, 1956, at Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque.  He preceded her in death on March 10, 2002.

Marilyn was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in East Dubuque. She was formerly employed at Mount Carmel in Dubuque for approximately 20 years until her retirement. Marilyn loved watching old TV shows, baking and spending time with her great grand kids.

Surviving are five children, Karen (Dennis) Schmitt of Dubuque, Patty (Guy) DeVries and Laura (Tim) Majerus both of East Dubuque, Donny (Jill) Sendt of Dubuque and Dean Sendt of East Dubuque; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlene Sendt of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews; in-laws, Bob Heim and Ellen (Paul) Largent both of East Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Darrell, a son, Albert “Albie” Sendt, siblings, Vernon (Vera) Blaser, Elaine (Val) Schilling, and Joseph (Stella) Blaser; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Albert and Mary (Jackoniski) Sendt; in-laws, Delbert (Kay) Sendt, Mary M. Heim and Duane Sendt.

Albert J. Stuart

Albert James Stuart, 80 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on December 16th, 2022, at home following a lengthy illness.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at Lord of Life Church. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the church followed by military honors by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.  Interment will be determined at a later time for Orangeville, OH. Albert James Stuart was born June 24, 1942, in Sharon, PA the son of Albert and Mary Jane Stuart. He served in the United States Navy (most recently as a Master Chief) until his retirement in 2008. He married Sheila Kay Saari on October 24, 1962, in Waukegan, Illinois, she preceded him in death on January 4, 2013. He later married Sheila (Ansel) Sharkey on September 9, 2014, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, IA.

Al was an actively engaged member of the Veterans Freedom Center for many years, a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church, and the Tri-State Antique Classic Car Club. He loved volunteering his time, classic cars, listening to music and traveling. He also enjoyed watching the Jacksonville Jaguars football team.

He is survived by his wife Sheila Sharkey, of Dubuque IA; daughters: Tammy (Michael) Bahls, of Dubuque IA and Tina (Steve) Miller, of Mesa, Ariz. His sons: Albert James (Kathleen) Stuart Jr., of Dubuque, IA, Tom (Alessandra) Sharkey, of Dubuque, IA and Todd Sharkey, of Dubuque, IA. Grandchildren: Tiffany Ramos, Tara (Tyler) Kennedy, Anna (Zach) Barry, Christian Stuart, Danielle Sharkey, Jordan Sharkey, Josh Sharkey, Wyatt Sharkey and Lauralynn Scherr along with many nieces and nephews.

Al was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Mary Jane Stuart; his first wife Sheila Kay Stuart; a grandson Austin Koppes in 1995 as well as two sisters Jane and Lynn.

Larry J. Heiar

Larry Joseph Heiar, 71, of LaMotte, IA passed away unexpectedly at home on December 18th, 2022

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 27th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa with Fr. Austin Wilker officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 26th, 2022, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road.  Additional visitation will be after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at the church until time of mass. Burial will follow the mass at Holy Rosary Cemetery in LaMotte with military honors accorded by the Bellevue American Legion Post #273.

Larry was born on June 2, 1951, in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Raymond and Virginia (Meyer) Heiar. He was a graduate of Marquette High School in Bellevue, IA

He married Edna (Beringer) Heiar at Saint Martin’s Church in Cascade IA in 1973.

He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. His trustworthy demeanor earned him several non-standard roles on the battleship such as the community money manager and the chauffeur to important dignitaries during their visit aboard the ship

Larry was a very humble man with strong character and a work ethic second to none. Even in his later years it was tough to match his pace around the farm. He had an uncanny ability to take a rough piece of land and transform it into the crown jewel. He frequented the local sale barns to catch up with friends and to find overlooked deals, filling his yards with cattle. Larry was also very unselfish with his time, possessions, and talents.

He valued his family above all else. This was demonstrated in all the sacrifices that he made during his more difficult farming years during the 80s and more recently when taking time away from his farming schedule to spend it with his kids and the many grandchildren. When he wasn’t farming, he liked to attend kid’s concerts, sporting events and travel with his wife Edna and friends. He was a man of few words, so when he did have some insight to share or a joke to tell everyone was listening. We will miss his sage advice and steadfast love.

He is survived by his wife Edna; four children; Keith (Gretchen) Heiar of Dunlap, Il, Wes (Stacey) Heiar, of East Dubuque, Rhonda (Mike) Hutcheson of Margate, FL and Mike (Molly) Heiar of Dubuque. 15 grandchildren and his siblings: Bill (Jane) Heiar, of Peosta, Marv (Jeanne) Heiar, of St. Catherine’s, Jan (Roger) Averkamp, of Dubuque, Garry (Jeanne) Heiar, of Dubuque, Tom (Sandy) Heiar, of Beaver Dam, WI and Mary Jo Gothard of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Virginia and a brother-in-law Curt Gothard.

Thomas E. Hoelscher

Thomas Eugene (Tom) Hoelscher, 71, of Dubuque, IA died on December 17, 2022 of cancer. He endured cancer with grace, dignity, and a wry sense of humor.

Services will be held at Nativity Parish in Dubuque, IA. The visitation will be Wednesday, December 21, 2022 beginning with a prayer service at 3pm and concluding at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 10am with Father Jim Miller officiating. Behr Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Tom was born November 24,1951, in Washington, MO to Elsie (Lamke) and Herbert Hoelscher. He spent his boyhood in Union, MO where he attended Immaculate Conception School. Tom traveled to East Troy, WI to attend Divine Word Seminary High School, graduating in 1969. There he learned to ice skate, play tennis, and play soccer. Tom went on to attend Divine Word College in Epworth, IA, receiving his BA in Sociology in 1972. He was active in sports, dance, and musicals. He also taught himself to play the guitar, albeit poorly.

Tom married Mary Margaret Kresse, of Maxwell, IA, in 1974. They were blessed with five children. He taught all the children to play soccer, tennis, skate, ski, and appreciate the outdoors. He loved to dance with Mary – at weddings, at live music events, in the living room.

Tom spent his career helping people in the community. He worked for Hillcrest Family Services, first as an activities director, where he connected with young people by roller skating, camping, and rock rappelling alongside them. He then became a social worker for Hillcrest. In 1984 Tom joined Juvenile Court Services as a juvenile probation officer and he became Chief in 1994.

Throughout this time, Tom worked a second job as a soccer coach, first for the inaugural Clarke Men’s program, then for the first Senior High School Boys’ program, and finally for the Wahlert High School Boys’ program. After coaching, Tom was a soccer referee for 26 years at the high school and collegiate levels. He also played soccer for the Dubuque Steamers.

Upon retirement from work in 2014, Tom filled his time with house painting, golfing, ski instructing at Sundown, practicing yoga, and playing pickleball. He joined the ‘Not Dead Yet’ Men’s Softball team and played hockey with the Dubuque Senior Saints. Tom volunteered as the Treasurer for Friends of Dubuque County Conservation and was active in Nativity Parish as a lector and usher.

Tom enjoyed life very much. He had the best laugh. He was proud of his children and grandchildren. Tom was social and beloved by his relatives and friends. He enjoyed traveling to Colorado and Wyoming to visit family. He went to Ireland, Mexico, and Italy with his wife. Tom also loved being at home, fixing up the house or yard, and playing cards or board games. Tom would welcome every friend and relative to join, teach them to play, coach them to improve, and usually go on to win. Tom was the consummate fan for his children and grandchildren.

Tom is survived by his wife, Mary, of 48 years, his children and their spouses: Matt, (Mary Frances) Hoelscher of Jackson, WY; Ben, (Emily Duehr) of Dubuque; Drew, (partner, Danielle Rolfe) of Denver, CO; Elizabeth Cullen, (Tyler) of Mount Vernon, IA; and Thomas Jr., of Dubuque. Tom loved his grandchildren: Sam, Ava, Vivian, Charlie, August, Ruby, Keegan, Fletcher, Theo, Nora, Owen, and Michela. He is also survived by his brother, Herb Hoelscher (Brenda) of Union, MO, and sister, Lynn Bucher (Jim) of Hermann, MO. Tom also had ten brothers and sisters-in-law on his wife’s side: Sarah (Gene) Behrens, Marion (Jean) Kresse, Joe (Olga) Kresse, Charles (Donna) Kresse, Robert (Cyndi) Kresse, Marie (Dave) Elliott, Patricia (Cap) Casady, Theresa Kresse, Ben (Candace) Kresse, and Helen (Bill) Langebartles.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Herb and Elsie Hoelscher, and parents-in-law, Joe and Sally Kresse.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to Friends of Dubuque County Conservation or Divine Word College in Epworth, IA or Hospice of Dubuque.

The family would like to thank Tom’s oncologist, Dr. Engleman, the staff at Mercy One, Tom’s urologist, Dr. Horchak, and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Melissa and Nicole.

Gladys M. Schemmel

Gladys M. Schemmel, 90, of Monticello died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022, at Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation in Monticello.

Visitation will be held from 3 – 7 pm Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello where there will be a parish scripture service at 3 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello with burial in the church cemetery.  Rev. Paul Baldwin will officiate.

Gladys was born on Oct. 19, 1932, in Petersburg the daughter of Clem and Frances (Weber) Deppe.  She married Leo Schemmel on April 18, 1951, in Dyersville.  Together they farmed near Worthington and eventually bought a farm west of Monticello.  Leo preceded her in death on March 27, 1982.  She continued to farm with the help of her son, Ron for another ten years.

In addition to helping on the farm she kept active as a 4-H Leader, and a member of the Monticello Garden Club, Sacred Heart Study Club and the Idle-Not Club.

Survivors include her children: Ronald (Sue) Schemmel of Monticello, David (Barb) Schemmel of Cedar Rapids, Joseph (Kim) Schemmel of Cedar Rapids, Patty (Dave) Hammen of Harper and Joyce (Kurt) Hosch of Robins; 21 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Hilda (Melvin) Reittinger and Sr. Julitta Deppe, OSF of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and parents-in-law, Ben and Rose Schemmel, brothers, William (Rosie) Deppe and Lawrence (Helen and Norma) Deppe, 2 sisters, Ardella (Don) Helle and Bertha (George) Klas, and several in-laws: Pearl (Gerald) Recker, Jean (Walter) Mormann, Marion (Vernon) Gudenkauf, LeRoy and Bernard Schemmel.

Memorials are preferred to Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School.

Leona M. Hibben

Leona M. Hibben, 86, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2022, at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Pastor MargaretAnne Overstreet officiating. A visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family.

Leona was born on March 2, 1936, in rural Bremer County on her grandparent’s farmhouse, the daughter of George and Adelia (Simon) Medders. At the age of 15, she met Russell Hibben at the National Cattle Congress in Waterloo and the two fell in love on horseback. “I thought he was kind of cute” was Leona’s comment. The couple married on March 7, 1953. They resided in Waterloo for 35 years before moving to Dubuque in 1985. Leona was a homemaker who was active in the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as the Worthy Matron for several years. She was also involved with Boy Scouts and the parent teacher association and volunteered with the local election board.

Leona is survived by her husband of 69 years Russ of Dubuque; her children; Gary (Karen) Hibben of Waterloo, IA, Vicki (Don) Payne of Traer, IA, and Robert (Amy) Hibben of Asbury, IA; 12 grandchildren Jessica and Joshua Hibben, Jeremy Payne, Vanessa Johnson, Sara and Justin Pittman, Brooke Schrage, Nicole Ryden, Niki Basra, Billy Kafar, Alicia Hibben and Marie Davis; 32 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son Steven, great grandson Gabe and her sister Betty.
