Debra E. Motsch

Debra Elaine “Deb” Motsch, 63, of Dubuque, IA, lost her battle with Non-Smokers Lung Cancer on February 10, 2022, at home.

Family and friends may gather from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a service will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Randy & Dawn Rick officiating.  Burial will be at a later date in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Deb was born on March 12, 1958, to Eugene Arnold and Ruth (Deiters) Motsch. She graduated from Stephen Hempstead High School with honors, Class of 1976. She worked for WC Brown Publishing Company for 20 years as a Paging Specialist in the Graphic Arts Department.

Deb had a great sense of humor and personality. She loved working in the yard with flowers and feeding the birds and squirrels. She was a member of the Grace Chrisitan Church. She enjoyed going on shopping trips and researching family genealogy. She loved family get togethers.

Deb is survived by brothers Vern Motsch of Dubuque, and Dave Motsch of Sagle, Idaho; sister Virge (Mike) Engling of Dubuque; nieces Carissa (Nick) Biver of Dubuque, Sheila Harris of Dubuque, and Emily Grimes of Dubuque; nephew/Godson Andy Grimes of Dubuque, nephew Trevor (Liz) Engling of Gorham, Maine, and nephew Will (Scarlett Adams) Engling of Dubquue; great nieces and nephews Haley, Trystin, Taiya, Sophia, Rowan, Myla, Jett, and Luka; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and her beloved cat Trudee.

Deb was preceded in death by her grandparents, nephews Jason and Josh Motsch, and her Silver Persian cats Dusty and Claire.

In lieu of flowers, a Debra Motsch Memorial Fund will be established.

Jean M. Sheehan

Jean Marie Sheehan, 66, of California, formerly of rural Bellevue, passed away on January 24, 2022 at Sonora Hospital in California after a long battle with multiple Myeloma.

Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am, Saturday, February 26, 2022 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Otter Creek.  Family will greet friends beginning at 9:30 am until Mass Time also on, Saturday. February 26, 2022 at the church.  Burial will be in Church Cemetery.

Jean was born October 23, 1955 the daughter of Francis Elmer and May Patricia Sheehan.  She attended Richland #1 Country School grades 1-4, and then 6-12th grade at Bellevue Community Schools.  Jean attended Kirkwood Community College and graduated with a degree in Animal Husbandry.  This led to her career in training, showing, and giving riding lessons.  She was a member of The Shady Ladies, a search and rescue team that also traveled to different shows and parades, including multiple trips to the Rose Bowl.  Her career led her from Iowa to Missouri to California.  She also worked multiple other jobs, including janitor at Sonora High School, and most recently at Columbia Community College in California.

Jean is survived by her brothers, Larry, Mike, Tim (Sarah), and Roy (Jeannine) Sheehan; sisters, Mary (Lloyd) Koos, Nora Sheehan, and Irene (Paul) Samples; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; her dear and very best friends, Toby and Eddie; and of course her horses and her loving dogs.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Anne Sheehan.

April M. Way

April M. Way “Princess”, 38, of Potosi, WI, passed away Monday, February 14, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in Iowa City, IA, as a result of Covid-19 complications.

A memorial will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the Bread of Life Church, 745 Lutheran St., Platteville, WI with burial to occur at a later date in the Clayton Cemetery, rural Garnavillo, IA. The Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque is serving the family.

April was born on October 24, 1983 in Dubuque, IA, the beloved daughter of Clifford T. and Linda M. (Churchill) Bailey. She was a graduate of Potosi High School, class of 2002. On January 17, 2009 she was united in marriage to Porter W. Way at Lancaster, WI. April was the Chief Personnel Officer at Clopas, LLC, and the Lead Pastor at Bread of Life Church, both in Platteville. She was an avid animal lover and enjoyed singing Karaoke.

She is survived by her husband, Porter; her mother, Linda Bailey of Potosi; her siblings, Debbie McDermott, Steve Bailey, Fay Patton, and Hope McDermott; numerous nieces and nephews; and a great nephew. She was preceded in death by her father Clifford; and a brother, Robert “Bob” Bailey.

John J. Till, Jr.

John J. Till, Jr. 91, of La Motte, Iowa passed away on February 13, 2022 at home.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 18th, 2022 at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Tom McDermott officiating. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery in La Motte with military honors by the Bellevue American Legion Post #273 and the Iowa Army National Guard. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family. The family request all who attend wear a face covering.

John was born on April 4, 1930 in Bellevue, Iowa the son of John J. Till Sr. and Gertrude (Reddin) Till. He married Dellene Evers on April 26, 1969 at Assumption Church, Sylvia Switch in Zwingle.

John served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 31 years. He also owned and operated Till’s Tap in La Motte from 1958 to 1980. In John’s retirement he enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Dellene; Daughters Dianne (Rick) Heiar, Deb (Gary) Cook and Deanna (Scott) Sagers. Eight grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and loved by many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Gertrude Till; brothers Mark Till, Tony Till and a brother in infancy; and his grandson Zachary Sagers.

Jerry Hoerner

Jerry Hoerner, 61 of Key West, Iowa passed away at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on Sunday, February 13, 2022, following a sudden illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Saint Columbkille’s Catholic Church, with Fr. Tom McDermott officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation for Jerry will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 18, 2022, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory 2595 Rockdale Road where a family wake service will be held at 2:45p.m.

Jerry was born on October 25, 1960, in Dubuque the son of Bob and Millie (Frederick) Hoerner. He grew up in Key West and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1979. Jerry married Marianne Welsh on August 21, 1982, at Saint Columbkille Church.

Jerry was a drywall contractor by trade and an antique collector by passion. He owned and operated Hoerner Drywall and worked with many contractors and homeowners in the tri state area. He also was an avid collector of antiques or anything he thought he could make a dollar on. He loved to attend auctions and yard sales, always looking for a deal.

He was also a great outdoorsman and sportsman. He played baseball and softball his entire life, he also was an avid hunter and horseman and in his earlier days he participated in area rodeo’s. He was an avid Saint Louis Cardinal fan and especially proud of his uncle Joe who pitched for the Cardinal’s. He enjoyed playing cards and having a cold one at one of his favorite watering holes, with his many friends.

Jerry loved his family more than anything and could often be found helping out with his grandchildren, babysitting, getting them to school or attending one of their many ball games and dancing events. They were truly Grandpa’s pride and joy.

Jerry is survived by his wife Marianne; his three children Adam Hoerner, Callie (Bobby) Schauer, and Luke Hoerner; his grandchildren Dominic Hoerner, Faith Schauer, Brody Hoerner, Eddie Schauer, Isabelle Schauer, Paisley Hoerner, Ethan Hoerner, Wyatt Schauer and Blake Schauer. His siblings Julie (fiancé Leonel Vasquez) Hoerner-Lester, Ted (Stacy) Hoerner, Dan (Linda) Hoerner, Marianne Hoerner and Nancy (Al) Hoerner-Ronek; his aunts and uncles Ann (Bob) Lambe, Phyllis Hoerner, Sally Hoerner, Darlene (Donnie Schmitt) Hoerner, Jean Frederick, many nieces, nephews and wonderful cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bob and Millie and a brother Tommy, along with his favorite dog Trixie, the best bird dog ever.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Finley Hospital ER, especially his amazing nurse Jennifer.

Gloria J. Weydert

Gloria Jean Weydert, 74, of Dubuque, Iowa, went to be with the Lord on February 11th, 2022.

Family and friends may gather from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Word of Life Church where a service will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Loren Hirschy officiating. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family.

Gloria was born on February 3, 1948, in Dubuque to Joseph and Dorthy (Hagensten) Bradley. She attended Dubuque Senior High School, and was united in marriage to Paul Weydert on April 21, 1966, in Allegan, Michigan.

She ministered to many people about the Lord. She loved animals, but most importantly her dog. As an artist, she painted many murals and did woodworking making clocks.

She is survived by her husband Paul, sons David (Marie), Steven (Jumi), sisters Danna Lang and LaVane Thompson, and one brother Vance.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, and her in-laws Cletus and Mildred Weydert.

Donald D. Feltes

Donald D. Feltes, 91, of Dubuque, died Saturday, February 12, 2022, at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am – 11:00 am Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at St. Anthony Catholic Church. The family requests that all in attendance to please wear a mask.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Don will be 11:00 am Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Marine Corps League and the Iowa National Guard Honor Guard.

Don was born August 15, 1930, in Dubuque, the son of George M. and Rose C. (Michel) Feltes. On September 14, 1957, he married Mary M. Savary in St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Don graduated from Loras Academy in 1949.

He was a proud U.S. Marines Veteran, serving during the Korean War from January 30, 1952 until January 15, 1954.

He was a meat cutter at Thompson’s Meat Market, A&P and later worked at Barnstead Thermolyne.

Don was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.  He was a past member of the V.F.W., Marine Corps League, American Legion Post #6, Dubuque Eagles Club (Fraternal Order of Eagles), Local 704 Electrical Workers, Meat Cutters Union #431, St. Mary’s Parish and their Holy Name Society.

Don was an avid hunter, enjoyed bowling and fishing and loved his dog, Crickett. Don and Mary enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the United States and Canada.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary, of Dubuque; godchildren, Ruth Lang, Mark Feltes, and Patty Beyer and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ivan Feltes, Lester Feltes, and Eldred Feltes; three sisters, Velma Corbett, Ruth Hayes and Betty Savary; his father and mother-in-law, John H. and Loretta (Penning) Savary and his best pal, the Bassett Hound, Crickett.

Robert B. Dorsey

Robert B. “Bob” Dorsey, 93, of Mesa, Arizona, and formerly of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, January 29, 2022, in Mesa, Arizona.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 P.M., Thursday, February 24, 2022, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the funeral on Thursday from 1 P.M. to 2 P.M. at the funeral home.  Burial will be in the East Iron Hill Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.  Casketbearers will be his grandchildren, Scott Mize, Trina Thompson, Brian Thompson, Christy Kernen, Lauren Naeve, Lance Dorsey, Jennifer Swift, Skylar Dorsey and Robert Dorsey.

Robert Bruce Dorsey was born on December 22, 1928 in Canadian, Texas to Robert Benjamin and Clara Margaret (Thiesen) Dorsey.  He was a 1946 graduate of Maquoketa High School.  He married Marcella Morehead Dague on August 17, 2002 in Maquoketa, Iowa.  She preceded him in death on March 9, 2017.

“Bob” had worked for National Livestock Company from 1954 to 1968 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, then Hannibal Livestock Sales from 1968 to 1969 in Hannibal, Missouri, then Hayes Livestock Sales in Chillicothe, Missouri from 1969 to 1970, and lastly Dorsey Livestock Company in Maquoketa, Iowa, from 1970 to 1996.

“Bob” had been a member of the Oklahoma Livestock Association, Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association, and the East Iron Hill Community Church.  He enjoyed western horseback riding and calf roping, sports of all kinds, playing cards, board and table games, and recreational and shuffleboard competitions.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Karen (William) Mize of Apache Junction, AZ, Tom (Sue) Dorsey of Hannibal, MO, Pamela (Bill) Thompson of Casa Grande, AZ, and James (Denise) Dorsey of Kingsland, TX; 12 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marcella, sister Evelyn Hopkins, and a grandson Jeremiah Thompson.

James Bush

James Bush, 90, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on February 8, 2022 at home.

Family and friends may gather from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 14th, 2022 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a sharing time will be at 2:00 p.m. Military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens.

James was born on August 25, 1931, in Dubuque, son of Dallas and Isabell (Hahn)Bush. He attended elementary school in Dubuque, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Joan Allen. He married Sandra (Bainbridge) on July 7, 1992, Jim was a loving husband to Sandra.

After school, James worked for Coca Cola Co. and ITT Die Hard Manufacturing before going to John Deere.

He served in the Marines for four years, as well as the Air Force for four years. James was a Korean Conflict veteran.

He loved the Marines and was a member of the Marine Corps League. He was a Bugler for TAPS at funerals.

James is survived by his wife Sandra, daughter Kelly (Steve) Frye, grandchildren Jenny (Mike) Frye Armbruster and Josh (Natalie) Frye, and great grandchildren Jade, Jordan, Jace, Justice, and Carter.​

He was preceded in death by his first wife Joan, daughter Tammy Widmeier, parents Dallas and Isabell, and brothers Jack, Bob, and Bill.

Eugene J. Konrardy

Eugene James Konrardy, 82, of Dubuque, died Friday, February 11, 2022, at the UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 9:30 am – 10:30 am Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Holy Spirit Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Eugene will be 10:30 am Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at Holy Spirit Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Steven Garner as the Celebrant. Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Full military honors will be rendered by the Dubuque Marine Corps League and the Iowa Army National Guard Honor Guard. Eugene was born December 15, 1939, in Dubuque, the son of Raymond and Leona (McDermott) Konrardy. On July 6, 1963, he married Catherine “Cathy” Ann Schmitz in Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Tennyson, Wisconsin.

Eugene earned his GED while serving his nation in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. When he returned from the service he worked at Caradco and then was hired at John Deere, Dubuque and retired as a supervisor in 1992. After his retirement he began to buy, sell and refinish antiques. He loved restoring old furniture. He also spent a lot of time on the golf course at Birchwood.

He liked to travel and camp with his family, he traveled to Europe several times with his wife, Cathy. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He spent many hours in his shop with his scroll saw, making many beautiful pieces for family and friends. He was a member of the KC’s, The Moose and Dubuque Business Men’s Association.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine “Cathy” Ann Konrardy of Dubuque; daughter, Cynthia Ann (Douglas) Mellon of Dubuque; son, Eric Eugene (Tracy) Konrardy of Bernard; five grandchildren, Miranda Mellon, Dylan Mellon, Blake Konrardy, Alex Konrardy and Emma Konrardy; two great-grandchildren, Sophia Mellon and Hadlei Rannels; his siblings, Gerald (Betty) Konrardy, Marie Knape, Lloyd (LeeAnn) Konrardy, Norma Jean Schuster, Roger (Ruth) Konrardy and Phillip (Kay) Konrardy; sister-in-law, MaryLou Konrardy; brother-in-law Roger Manders and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Marvin (Elaine) Konrardy, Kenneth Konrardy, Richard Konrardy, Neil Konrardy, Linda Manders and Sheila Konrardy; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Knape and Merlin Schuster.

Marita E. Theisen

Marita E. Theisen, 86, of Dubuque, died Wednesday, February 9, 2022, from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm Friday, February 18, 2022, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Marita will be 10:30 am Saturday, February 19, 2022, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church with Father Paul Attah-Nsiah as the Celebrant. Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery Masouleum.

Marita was born on September 13, 1935, in Dubuque, daughter of George and Francis (Junk) Sear.  She graduated high school from Visitation Academy in 1953.  After graduating from high school, Marita worked as a legal secretary.  Marita met the love of her life in 1953, Leo A. “Jim” Theisen.  They were engaged before he enlisted in the Army.  While Jim was in France, Marita recorded a song of herself singing Unchained Melody, sent it to him in France, and it became their song for their entire married life.

They married on November 24, 1956, at Nativity Catholic Church in Dubuque.  After their first child, Marita chose to give up her career to become a dedicated wife and mother.

She cherished her role as a mother and grandmother.  Marita found joy in attending and cheering on all her six children at their events, as well as volunteering at their schools. Marita was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She had such a magical way to calm and soothe newborns and crying babies that she was affectionately known within the family as the baby whisperer.  Inspired by the love and care she provided, the Marita E. Theisen Childcare Center was established in Dubuque in her honor by her children.

She was an avid bowler, she enjoyed traveling, playing cards, games, singing, played the violin and piano.  Marita was also a devoted daughter, as she spent countless hours supporting her mother who also passed as a result of Alzheimers. She was a devout Catholic and long-time parishioner of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.  Marita was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family.  She left a beautiful legacy of faith and family.  Marita and Jim were both generous supporters and donors of numerous local charities and non-profit organizations, as well as national and international causes.

Surviving is her husband, Jim; two daughters, Jody (John) Randall of St. Charles, MO, and Sharon (Dale) Hagel of Medical Lake, WA; four sons, Chris (Pam) Theisen and Scott (Julia) Theisen, both of Dubuque, Tony (Sue) Theisen of Peosta, IA, and Jay (Julia) Theisen of Bloomington, MN; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Karen (Pat) Dillion of East Dubuque, IL, and Sandra (Jon) Billington of Dubuque; and a brother, George (Marny) Sear of Glen Ellyn, IL.

Marita was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Charlene McDermott and Nancy Sear who died in infancy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Hospice of Dubuque, Stonehill Caregivers Center, St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, and the Marita Theisen Childcare Center.

Stacy M. Schmitz

Stacy M. Schmitz passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospitals with her family at her side. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m., Monday, February 14, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home, 2659 JFK Rd., Dubuque. Private funeral services and burial at Resurrection Cemetery will be on Tuesday.

Stacy was born on February 18,1970 at Mercy Hospital, Dubuque, to Donna and Terry Beresford. She graduated from Wahlert High School in Dubuque, Iowa. Stacy married Luke Schmitz on June 9th, 1995 at the Basilica of St. Francis, Dyersville. Stacy worked at the East Dubuque Savings Bank until she started her in-home daycare.  She loved children and cared for so many through the years and loved them all like her own. Many of her daycare families became lifelong friends. Stacy was very devoted to her family, she was happiest when she was
with her husband and all of her kids were together. She was loved deeply by her grandchildren as Mimi and shared a special bond with each of them. She would light up when hearing they were coming over. Stacy’s family will remember how special she made every holiday and birthday for them.

Stacy is survived by her husband, Luke, of Dubuque, IA; six children, Katie (Jacob) Schoop, of Dubuque, IA, Lindsey (Michael) Kessler, of Chicago, IL, Sarah Schmitz (Joe Schueller), of Dubuque, IA,  Hannah Schmitz (Austin Kluck), of Dubuque, IA, Matthew Schmitz, of Dubuque, IA, and Grace Schmitz, of Dubuque, IA; seven grandchildren, Ava, Lyla, Jaxon, William, and Evelyn Scoop, and baby Charlie Kessler arriving soon; her parents, Donna and Terry Beresford, of Dubuque, IA; her father-in-law, Phil Schmitz, of Dyersville, IA; her brothers, Todd (Sherri) Beresford, of Chagrin Falls, OH; and Jamie Beresford (Tiffany Ramos), of Dubuque; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Mike (Mary) Schmitz, of Oak Hill, VA, Mary Carol (David) Morkel, of Independence, IA, Janet (Todd) Gansmer, of Eldridge, IA, Mark (Kristen) Schmitz, of Wisconsin Dells, WI, Elizabeth (Eugene) Pisacreta, of Greenwich, CT, Sarah (Kurt) Wedewer, of Dubuque, IA, Joseph (Michelle) Schmitz, of Wisconsin Dells, WI, Matthew Schmitz, of Dyersville, IA, John (Anne) Schmitz, of Wisconsin Dells, WI, James (Rasa) Schmitz, of Wisconsin Dells, WI, and Phillip (Julie) Schmitz, of Reedsburg, WI; and 39 nieces and nephews.

Stacy is preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Ann Schmitz; her precious baby Sophie; and her grandparents.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Stacy’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the support and love from family and friends during this difficult time.

Lonny A. Gilmore

Lonny A. Gilmore, 74, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, February 9, 2022, at Country Manor Memory Care Center in Davenport, Iowa.

A celebration of Lonny’s life will be held at 11 A.M., Thursday, February 17, 2022, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home.  Burial will be at the East Iron Hill Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.

Lonny Alan Gilmore was born on September 19, 1947 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Benjamin F. and Rosalie J. (Edwards) Gilmore.  He was a 1965 graduate of Maquoketa High School and served his country in the United States Army Reserves.  He married Nancy Jean Busch on February 9, 1969 in Maquoketa, Iowa.  Two children were born to this union, Jeff and Mike.

Lonny had first worked for Ruan Transportation for 11 years from 1970 to 1981.  He then owned and operated Gilmore Dry Cleaners in Maquoketa for over 30 years, retiring in 2013.

Lonny was a member of First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, and a former member of the Maquoketa Country Club.  He enjoyed golfing, computers, flying, drag racing and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Nancy Gilmore of Maquoketa, IA; sons, Jeff (Julie) Gilmore of Mount Pleasant, IA, and Mike (Kimm) Gilmore of West Liberty, IA; 4 grandchildren, Jenna, Josie, Kamryn and Melanie; and a brother, Charles (Phyllis) Gilmore of Maquoketa, IA.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Kimberly.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to any area Dementia association or hospice of the donor’s choice.

Edwin A. Schick

Edwin Adam Schick, 100, died on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at Luther Manor. Visitation will be at 10:30am with a memorial service following at 11:30am on Monday, February 21 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Dubuque, IA where Pastor Schick had worshipped for half a century. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Eureka, SD.

The son of John A. and Christina (Beck) Schick, Edwin was born on May 7, 1921, on the family farm in Campbell County, South Dakota. He attended a one-room rural school; then high school in Eureka, SD; Wartburg College, Waverly, IA; Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA; and finally, Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, NJ where he earned a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies.

Of German-Russian descent, Edwin Schick married Barbara Jane Anderson of Norwegian ancestry at State College, PA, July 30, 1948. Their three children are Linda S. (Dennis Thomann) Liedtke of Coralville, IA, John A. (Renee) Schick, of Dubuque and Robert Schick. There are no grandchildren.

Ordained as Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1946, Dr. Schick spent his professional life on the faculties of Wartburg College and Wartburg Theological Seminary. As professor at the Seminary, he was also Dean of the Faculty, Acting President briefly, and Director of the Denver House of Studies. Upon assignment from the national Church’s Board of Missions he completed a “Mid-East Research Project,” an outgrowth in part of the cross-cultural experience gained by a year’s study in Jerusalem, archaeological work for several seasons in Jordan, Syria, and Israel/Palestine, and an appointment as Annual Professor at the American Center of Oriental Research in Amman, Jordan.

Dr. Schick devoted considerable study to the book of Revelation. His commentary Revelation-The Last Book of the Bible was published by Fortress Press in 1977.

Retired in 1986 from Wartburg Seminary but not from teaching, Prof. Schick taught for three years in Nigeria and Ethiopia, part of the time under call of the Church’s Board of Missions. Locally, for more than twenty years, he met weekly with Lutheran Pastors in sermon-oriented Bible study. He served as assistant pastor for several years at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dubuque up to the age of 80.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; a brother, Ruben, in infancy; brothers, Otto and Milbert; and sisters, Alma Keszler, Martha Conlon, and Elsie Heilman.

Kenneth R. Snodgrass

Kenneth R. Snodgrass, King of the Water Fight, pun-master, prankster, actor and singer took his final curtain call on February 10, 2022.  A private service was held at Resurrection Church.

Ken was born on May 30, 1940, to Roland and Lula (O’Dell) Snodgrass and his older brothers, Dale and Clare.  He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1958 and truly enjoyed emceeing and catching up with classmates at reunions. Ken managed a great group at Crescent Electric for 44 years where he did everything “soon” and made many friendships.

He married his costar, Carole (Pins) on October 10, 1964.  Together they had two amazing, brilliant, kind-hearted daughters and two other ones. In order of appearance: Cheryl, Denise, Kathy, and Deanne.

Dad had a definite flair for entertaining.  We thought he was famous when he was as an extra in F.I.S.T.  Dad also performed in stage productions at Grand Opera House, Main Street Players, Bell Tower Theater, and murder mystery dinners. He was thrilled that he passed on that passion to his daughter, Cheryl, and granddaughter, Alyssa.  He made sure his daughters were proficient in the box step. He loved Resurrection Church and devoted his time lectoring and singing in the choir.

Ken was very community oriented. You might have met him through Rotary (Paul Harris Fellow), Toastmasters (President), Junior Achievement (Board member), Republican Central Committee (Chairman), the Hospice Foundation Board or his mentorship of entrepreneurs through S.C.O.R.E. He issued many grammar citations. So, we now can (not ‘may’) go out to eat (anywhere but Carole’s Kitchen!) and when asked, we did good (not ‘well’).

“Mr. Snodgrass” was the fun dad to all our friends.  He was easy to provoke with his temper that ran zero to 100 at the speed of a snowball hitting his station wagon.

April Fool’s Day will always be our holiday.  We will honor you with pranks that will simultaneously make you ashamed and proud of us.

Those of us left to remember your humorous sayings and warm heart: wife, Carole; daughter, Cheryl (and Mika) Snodgrass; daughter, Denise and Dan (Felly) Leibfried and their children Jake (Sydney Azim) Leibfried, Alyssa (Tanner) Norby, and Brody Leibfried; daughter, Kathy and Joe Bitter and their children Sophie and Daniel; daughter, Deanne and Eric Bowman and their children Sydney and Ryland. Ken’s brother Clare (Joan) Snodgrass; beloved widow of Dale, Mickie (Dan) Leibfried; Carole’s dear friend and sister-in-law, Jan Pins; and nieces and nephews.

As lonely as it makes us, as much as no holiday or get-together will ever be the same without you: Ma has some warm oatmeal cookies ready, Pop and Dale are waiting to hunt and fish, Art and Marge Pins have a Rusty Nail cocktail for you, and Tom Pins is holding your slot machine.

We know you are running around and playing kick-the-can on Alpine Street, dancing without your daughters making fun of you, and finding out what happened to Old Walt.  And Dad, would you strum your guitar and sing your girls to sleep once in a while? ♪ …”then sings my soul”…♫
