John L. Widel
John L. Widel, 66, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at his home after a valiant fight against cancer.
John was born June 24, 1959, in Maquoketa, to Lyle and Barbara (Zaruba) Widel. He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1977. John married LeAnn Rockwell on July 3, 1982.
John’s most recent employment was at Guardian Industries in Dewitt, Iowa, working as a crane operator. Retiring after 17 years in 2022 due to a surgery that put him in remission. John was an avid sports fan, proudly supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bears and Cubs. Probably his favorite hobby was trying his luck by picking up a couple of lottery tickets to scratch off every time he had the chance. He also enjoyed his daily walks in town along with sitting in his recliner with his granddogs watching a game show or the news.
John is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife LeAnn Widel of Maquoketa; daughters Abby Widel of Eldridge, Iowa, and Lexi (Ian) Ballantine of Davenport, Iowa; brother Dick (Beth) Widel of Maquoketa; sisters Judy Carr of Maquoketa, and Joyce (Rich) Majerus of Sycamore, Illinois; brothers–in–law Loren (Patty) Rockwell and Stacey (Darcie) Rockwell of Maquoketa; his step grandson Liam Ballantine; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Norman R. LeGrand
Norman “Norm” R. LeGrand, 89, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at Hawkeye Care Center in Dubuque with his loving family by his side.
Friends and family may visit from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the Church of the Nativity with Rev. Stephen Audu officiating. Military Honors will be accorded.
Norman was born on July 13, 1935, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Clarence LeGrand and Bertha Althaus Jones. Growing up, Norm was a member of Nativity Church where he served as an Altar boy from the age of 13. He later moved to California and eventually to Colorado where he graduated from Rocky Ford High School in 1953. He served in the US Army from 1956-1958 and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He started at John Deere Dubuque Works in 1959 and retired in 1986. He did several things after retirement – had a JT General Store route, did taxes for H&R Block and Honkamp Krueger – before he finally decided retirement was ok!
Norm loved to play cards! When he was young, he carried a deck of cards in his pocket, hoping his Grandma Althaus would play a game with him. He was a shark at Euchre, and you never had to ask him twice if he wanted to play a game or two! He taught his sons, grandchildren and even a few great grandchildren to play – usually making for some pretty rowdy holiday gatherings.
Norm was very active in sports. He loved to bowl – achieving a perfect game at the age of 23! After retirement, he bowled 3 days a week and was proud to bowl on teams with his sons. He was also an avid golfer who accumulated three “holes-in-one” during his life.
In his later years, he had enjoyed wood working – making many pieces of furniture and toys for his kids and grandkids. He loved teaching his great grandkids how to play chess and almost always let them win!
Norm was a man who had a strong faith in God and loved his family more than anything. Raising five boys wasn’t easy and probably produced more than a few gray hairs, but he was so proud of all of them. Later in his life, he met and married Susan Goodin and through that union, gained three daughters and another son. He loves to brag to anyone who will listen that he has 22 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren (plus one on the way)! He truly believed that family wasn’t the blood you shared with others, but the bond you share with the people you surround yourself with.
Norm is survived by his children – Dennis (Renee) LeGrand, Ken (Kathy) LeGrand, Steve (Cathy) LeGrand, Dan (Sherlita) LeGrand, Dave (Beth) LeGrand, Colleen (Ann) Ryan, Cynthia (Dave) Oberhoffer, Don (Susan) Goodin. As well as his grandchildren – Shaun, Alicia, Melissa, Mitchell, Jayme, Katie, Megan, Ashley, Alex, Anakin, Travis, Jessica, Stacey, Sydney, Spencer, Brandon, Cige, Jesi, Josh, Christopher, Emily, Skylar, and his great grandchildren – too many to list! He is also survived by his brothers and sisters – Ronald (Hope) LeGrand, Alvin (Connie) LeGrand, Clarence “Sonny” (Sharon) LeGrand, Tommy (Tina) LeGrand, Elaine (Kenny) Lindholm, Lois Paintin, Dale LeGrand, Rentz Jones, Jr, and Darrell Jones; and his god children, Kevin Althaus and Linda Wilming, whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Susan, and a daughter, Marleen.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Betsy and Jennifer, the nurses, and staff in the TCU wing at Hawkeye Care Center, and Dr Parker and the nurses at Mercy One Medical Center for their kindness and guidance. The family would also like to thank his physicians at Medical Associates – Dr. Ramabadran, Dr. Bland, Dr. Hughes, and Dr. Sullivan for the care they have provided to Norman for the past several years.
A birthday party had already been planned for Sunday, July 13th – it will now be a Celebration of Norman’s Life and the love we all had for him.

Joe W. Hudspeth
Joe W. Hudspeth (a.k.a. Joe Arkansas) of East Dubuque, IL, a true original and a man who lived life entirely on his own terms, passed away peacefully on July 8, at the age of 86. Born a soul tuned to nature and a heart full of music, he leaves behind a legacy of grit, laughter and love that won’t be forgotten. To honor Joe’s life, a private Celebration of Life service will be held. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery. The Tri State Cremation Center is humbly serving Joe’s family.
Joe was born on January 11, 1939, in Marianna, AR, a son to Bedford H. and Brooksey N. Hudspeth. While he enjoyed life in the south, as a gifted musician he eventually hit the road and toured throughout the mid-west with the Night Beats, a band full of fire and talent that brought people together through rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm. The stage was his second home and whether he was laying down a groove or backing up a friend, he played with heart and soul. The band made their way to the Dubuque area when love struck and Joe settled here where he then owned and was the heartbeat of the Townhouse nightclub in East Dubuque where countless stories were told, friendships formed, and songs played late into the night. Years later he gave up the nightclub business to faithfully provide for his family as the Street and Water Supervisor for the city of East Dubuque. His desire to grace the stage was always present playing often with the likes of Johnny Piper, Timmy Griffin, Ronnie McDonald and Artie Mentz, the areas finest. He finally finished his music career with the boys in Coaltrain, entertaining many throughout the Dubuque area, where nothing compared to being on stage playing the songs that so many enjoyed.
On May 31, 1997, Joe and Vicki Budde were married and with her two sons, embarked on a wonderful family journey together enjoying the simple things in life, spending all their time together. As grandchildren came into the picture, they lovingly accepted that role with patience, love and kindness.
Outdoors, he was a skilled bow hunter and fisherman, and his family enjoyed dining on all his kills and catches over the years. Joe’s passion for golf grew greatly over the last several years and nothing gave him greater joy than hitting the course with his family, making sure to give a lesson or two to the most deserving during each round. His hobbies didn’t end there, he had a great passion for perfecting anything he decided to try from woodworking projects to cooking new recipes and baking pies. Joe truly didn’t waste a day.
He didn’t care much for fancy things or big talk. As a dad he didn’t expect perfection – just effort, a good attitude and respect for others. If you worked hard, treated people right, and didn’t make excuses, you had his respect. He raised his kids to be strong and independent and if you were lucky enough to be loved by him, you knew it – maybe not in a lot of words, but in little ways that mattered.
He didn’t want a fuss, so we’ll honor him the way he would’ve wanted – with stories, laughter and maybe a little pickin’ and grinnin’ , In the end, he lived how he wanted, loved who he loved, and did it all with a quiet strength that spoke louder than words ever could.
We will miss Joe – out there in the woods, on the fairway, by the water and in every song that sounds like home.
Those left to cherish the memory of Joe include,
his loving wife of 28 years, Vicki Hudspeth, East Dubuque, IL; his children, Robin (Dreama Perry) Hudspeth, San Antonio, TX, Patti (Jeff) Walz, Peosta, IA, Brian (Bobbie Jo) Hudspeth, Potosi, WI, Justin (Melissa) Reynolds, East Dubuque, IL, and Jordan (Schavone) Reynolds, Dubuque, IA;
his adored grandchildren, Gus Burgmeier, Pete Burgmeier, Hanna (Nolan) Baumhover, Bo Burgmeier, Tanner (Isabelle Freese) Hudspeth, Brooksey (Nicholas) Kluesner, Jayden Reynolds, Liz Reynolds, Lexus Reynolds, Oliver Reynolds, and Ridley Reynolds;
his two great-grandchildren, Bo Baumhover and Vivian Baumhover;
his sister, Rena Sage, Bradenton, FL, his father-in-law, Dale Budde, Dubuque, IA; his sister-in-law, Virginia Hudspeth, Cabot, AR; along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

John Ray
John Ray, 92, of Galena, IL, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2025, at Midwest Senior Care Center, Galena. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Friends may call from 5 to 7 PM on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel. A Masonic service will be held at 7 PM on Friday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena, where military honors will be rendered graveside by VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193.
John Ray was born on November 1, 1932, to Thomas and Dee Ray in Lincolnville, OK. He grew up with 5 brothers and 2 sisters while his father worked for Eagle-Picher Mines. When John was a sophomore in high school, his family moved to Galena, IL, where his father worked at the Eagle-Picher mine in town. John grew to love it here and chose to never leave. John graduated from Galena High School in 1951, excelling at football and basketball. He then enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Korean War on the USS Helena (CA-75). After his 2-year enlistment, John was recommended for re-enlistment but came back to Galena, where he went to work in the mines and later on the Mississippi River Lock and Dam #11.
Following his father’s footsteps, John entered the Masonic lodge #273 in Galena. At the George Washington Birthday dance in 1954, John found his lifelong love in Nancy Einsweiler, who had a business degree and worked for V&E construction. John’s enjoyment of dancing and big band music showed as he danced that evening with Nancy. John and Nancy married on July 28, 1956, at the Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Galena. Nancy eventually became a teacher and reading specialist, while John fulfilled his bricklayer apprenticeship and became a mason working in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. John was proud of the brickwork he completed on numerous new construction and restoration projects to help keep Galena charming and welcoming for all visitors.
He was a 32nd degree freemason and was a member of the Galena lodge for 71 years, and enjoyed membership with the Odd Fellows lodge. For all their lives together, John and Nancy were proud and active members of Westminster United Presbyterian Church. John later became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Galena. In his twilight years, John lived a simple life in Galena: he loved to garden, go to church, watch the Cubs, and take drives around town to see the Galena he knew and loved to continue to thrive. He always loved to stop in and see his friends and neighbors and was always quick with a joke to crack a smile on the faces of those around him.
John is survived by his children Mark (Elaine) Ray of Chapel Hill NC and Janet Ray (Geoff Wells) of Manhattan Beach CA; 5 grandchildren Alex (Matt) Gray of Berkeley CA, Cora (Annalies) Simms of Rosendale NY, Samuel (Natasha) Ray of Galena IL, Morgan Wells (Angel Sanchez) of Lakewood CA, and Garrett (Samantha) Wells of Babylon NY; and his brother Vernon Ray of Sycamore IL.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy Ray, brothers Thomas Ray, Gerald Ray, William Ray, Charles Ray, sisters Faye Nelle Ray, and Dee Anna McCarthy.
From the children of John Ray: Our father taught us many things, but most importantly, he taught us about love and loyalty. Our mother’s later years were characterized by an extended fight with Alzheimer’s disease, and she had to be moved to a care facility in 2013. For seven years, Dad visited Mom every day and fed her meals at least once (and most often twice) a day. He never complained and always made sure our mom’s needs were put before his own. Our Mom passed away peacefully in 2020, 3 weeks into COVID-19 isolation, when Dad’s daily visits could not be made. With quiet, patient, and steadfast service to his family and his community, Dad set a high bar for us to follow and was a role model for us all.
Thank you to everyone who knew and loved John. His neighbors were better than any we’ve known. The Midwest Senior Care nursing team took great care of him at the end, especially Jessica of Hospice of Dubuque. To our family, friends, neighbors, work companions, lodge members, church members, and all the Galena community, thank you for the love and support you showed our dad.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, please consider donations to: Miners Lodge #273 or Oddfellows both located at 212 N Bench St, Galena, IL, 61036.

From 2005 until 2008, when he retired, he served as pastor at John Paul II Pastorate which includes both St. John the Evangelist Church, St. Patrick’s Church in Winthrop and also was in charge of St. Patrick’s in Oratory, Monti.
In all these assignments, he found time to hit some golf balls, play cards, go out to eat and to relax. If you look through the archives he ministered at hundreds of funerals, weddings and sacraments. He was able to make on trip to Rome.
Fr. Vorwald “retired” in July, 2008. He remained extremely busy filling in for area priests and accepting long term assignments for special circumstances until 2022. He also assisted in hearing confessions for area parishes, Catholic schools, and CEW weekends. He demonstrated special pastoral care for the aged by providing the Sacraments at Shady Rest in Cascade and MercyOne Senior Care in Dyersville, until March 2023.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus…1975-Chaplain Knights of Columbus Dyersville Council, 2008-2022-Chaplain Knights of Columbus for the Dyersville Council; Friar Chaplain for 4th Degree Council, 2019 he was State of Iowa Knights of Columbus Chaplain of the year.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Ethel Vorwald of Placid, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his mother; a sister, Rosemary Strang; two brothers, Wilfred Vorwald and Paul Vorwald; a sister-in-law, Darlene Vorwald; a brother-in-law, Tom Strang; and nephews, Stephen P. Vorwald and Michael F. Vorwald.
Thomas Edison school (K-3), was a quarter mile west of the Vorwald farm on the south side of old HWY 20 in rural Dubuque County.
While at the country school, Fr. Remembers that Alma Gerken was a teacher. She had an old car and during the winter she would need to go out and start it. At the end of the day it was not unusual for her to have the students push her out onto Old Hwy 20 where she would pop the clutch and it would start. Some of the older boys could be found stuffing snow into her tailpipe. One day students were throwing snowballs at cars on Hwy 20. One of the cars was the school superintendent…he turned around and came back to the school. That was the end of that fun!
In 2008, friends from Winthrop took Fr. On a trip to New York City. His hotel was on Long Island. He wanted to attend a Yankee’s game as it was the last year for Yankee Stadium. He was able to attend the Old Timers’ Game. He visited St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Statue of Liberty.
