Thomas D. Oberbroeckling

Mr. Thomas “Tom” Dale Oberbroeckling, age 83, of Dyersville, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on October 12, 2025, in Dyersville after a 9-1/2 year battle with bladder cancer. Born on September 5, 1942, in Greeley, Iowa to Gregor and Celia Oberbroeckling and married Joanne Brimeyer Hoeger on November 21, 1964, in St Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville. Tom lived a life defined by dedication to family, service to his country and community, and an unwavering work ethic.
Tom graduated from St. Boniface High School and proudly served in the United States Army and Army Reserves for eight years, achieving the rank of Sergeant. During his service, he performed with distinction as part of the Honor Guard at Fort Dix, New Jersey—a role that reflected both his discipline and deep respect for our country. He continued his unwavering commitment to helping others by serving his community on the Dyersville Fire Department and was very proud to be a member of Dyersville’s American Legion Post 137.
He went on to build a long and industrious career which included owning and operating the V&R Tap and Heartland Blacktop and was employed across several companies over the years including the Holy Cross Creamery, Jack Link Truck Line, Tri-State Paving, Jensen Transport, and River City Paving. Whether behind the wheel or on the job site, Tom was known for his tireless energy and commitment to getting the job done right. His motto — “Down the Road, Wide Open!” — was more than just a saying; it was how he approached every aspect of life.
Tom’s life was rich with personal joy as well. He found great happiness in reading and solving crossword puzzles, only cheating a little with the toughest clues. He always loved a good cookie and traveled many a mile for a dish of ice cream. He loved hunting and spending time in the timber—places where he felt most at peace. He enjoyed his days snowmobiling locally and on trips up North and out West and was an avid volunteer in the Dyersville Driftskippers Snowmobile Club. Tom and Joanne enjoyed many years hosting friends and family at their cabin on Lake Delhi next to his brother Bob’s cabin. Travel brought him new experiences and memories as he visited his boys during their careers in the Air Force among many other travels that he cherished deeply.
Above all else, Tom valued time spent with family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Joanne (he affectionately called Joey); sons: Pat (Angie) Oberbroeckling and Mike (Sandy) Oberbroeckling; son-in-law, Larry Soppe; grandchildren: Nick (Allison) Oberbroeckling, Bethany (Devin) Johnson, Sadie Oberbroeckling, Luke (fiancé Casey) Oberbroeckling, Jack (friend Addison) Oberbroeckling, Hunter Thomas (Margeaux) Oberbroeckling, Savanah Oberbroeckling, Samuel Oberbroeckling, and Maxwell Oberbroeckling; great grandchildren Rhett and Reis Oberbroeckling and Brooks and Mila Johnson, sister, Jan (Ron) Bockenstedt; and many cherished in-laws: Dianne Duwe, Mary Lou Meyer, Judy (Dick) Boeckenstedt, Kenny (Dottie) Brimeyer, Darlene (Larry) Boeckenstedt, Marlene Errthum, Steve (Bonnie) Brimeyer, and Karen Turner.
He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Sue Soppe; oldest grandson, Austin Oberbroeckling; parents, Greg and Ceil Oberbroeckling; siblings: Bob (Lois) Oberbroeckling, Phyllis (Jim) Kraus, Jim Oberbroeckling; parents-in-law, Ray and Alvina Brimeyer; and in-laws: Patsy (Clark) Lange, Roger Meyer, Jerome Errthum, Kathy Brimeyer, and Tom Turner.
Tom’s presence filled every room he entered—larger than life with a spirit that led people to laugh. Known for fun times as much as for hard work, he leaves behind a legacy of laughter shared around a table and stories told over coffee cups.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to live each day “Down the Road, Wide Open!” A Wake will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, from 03:00 PM to 07:00 PM and again 9:00 to 10:30 AM at Kramer Morris Funeral Home 750 12th Ave SW, Dyersville, Iowa. American Legion Post #137 will provide a service at 7:00 pm.

Donald D. Cox
Donald D. “Don” Cox, age 93, of Hazel Green, WI, completed his earthly journey on October 10, 2025, at home while surrounded by his loving family. Per Don’s request, no public services will be held. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Don’s family.
Don was born on July 31, 1932, in Galesburg, IL, a son to Fred (Lorena) Cox. He was truly blessed to life a full and abundant life, thankfully with some wonderful opportunities, and yet, coupled as life happens to do with some tragic moments as well. He honorably served his country with the U.S. Army before eventually returning to finish his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science at Wester Illinois University. He began his early working years as a high school coach in Park Forest, IL, an elementary principal in Gilson, IL, and finally as a high school principal in Abingdon, IL. He enjoyed working in education, but decided it was time for a new chapter and in May of 1964, he began his 35 years of service with State Farm Insurance. He faithfully put in the work and in time became an Agency Manager. Don welcomed retirement when it arrived and was forever grateful for all of the satisfaction he had received throughout his careers.
Don was fortunate enough to find love three times throughout his 93 years among us. First, with Mary Jo Lindahl, who blessed his life with three sons before she was sadly passed away ahead of him in 1962. He found his second love, Nancy Vogler in time and she also blessed Don with two more sons to love and adore. Sadly, once again, Nancy passed away much too early. Thankfully, Holly Piper walked into his life and this loving relationship would last until the end for Don. Don was a good man who loved his family dearly and even though the trials and tribulations were difficult to face and navigate, he was able to make it through each one and find a new peace with each new chapter he built. His legacy of love and devotion were always on display and Don clearly understood that the only parts of this life which we can honestly control are the points where we react to it as it is happening to us. As Don would say, “Keep getting up each day and keep on keepin’ on”.
Don also made it a point to enjoy the downtime in life as much as possible. He enjoyed the outdoors to a fault and spent countless hours perfecting his flyfishing skills, as well as always being prepared for when duck, pheasant and turkey seasons would be open and a few more hours could be spent in the outdoors. Don was also an avid golfer and the swings (and practice swings) he put in at Galena Golf Club were among his favorites over the years. Not to be outdone with outdoor activities, Don was also an accomplished Barbershop Quartet enthusiast. He sang with many groups over the years including The Nights at Camelot, Clipper Chorus, River Knights Quartet, and finally with the Dubuque Chorus as his final excursion into perfect melodies and harmonies with friends by his side. Don treasured each and every aspect of his life outside of work and home and always appreciated that his natural gifts often brought not only joy to himself, but quite often to others around him. Just an excellent way to live life when such blessings come our way.
Don will be dearly missed and forever loved by all who have had the pleasure to know him. His positive outlook and influence on the world around him was undeniable and for having such a man walk in our midst, we are forever grateful. Thank you, Don, for living life with your chin up, even in the moments when you would have been justifiably head-down, and for reinforcing to all those around you that we only get to walk through this world one time; it’s entirely up to us how the story goes and who we allow to help us write it along the way.

Sylvia A. Hitzler
Sylvia A. Hitzler, age 74, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on October 9, 2025, at home while surrounded by her loving family. To honor Sylvia’s life, a memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 2921 Central Avenue in Dubuque, with Rev. Jeff Frieden officiating. Family and friends are invited to join in fellowship for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Sylvia’s family.
Sylvia was born on August 1, 1951, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Leo and Leona (Waters) Birch. She was blessed with a sweet and gentle soul which she proudly carried throughout her entire life. Sylvia eventually found the love of her life, Tony Hitzler, and the couple was united in marriage in 1979. They faithfully began their life together and were inseparable from that point on. Sylvia not only shared her natural abilities to love and nurture at home, but also invested her working career as a rehab specialist with both Luther Manor and Heritage Manor. She found great satisfaction in helping others where they couldn’t help themselves and never regretting one day she spent caring for those around her.
Sylvia knew quite well how to enjoy life at home to its fullest also. Primarily with her dear family members right by her side whenever possible, you could easily find her tending to gardens, working on her next wonderful meal for all to enjoy, or even harvesting walnuts when the fall season had arrived. She never turned down the opportunity to tackle her latest puzzle when time allowed and if some time at the sewing machine could fit in her schedule, you could be sure Sylvia would take advantage of the chance to work a little magic and create a precious keepsake for those around her to enjoy for years to come. She was also beyond content to find a comfy chair and put her knitting needles to work when a request from a beloved family member made its way onto her list. The beautiful blankets and other keepsakes she has invested so many hours of love and devotion into still remain today to help comfort the broken hearts of those who possess them.
Sylvia’s heart was larger than life on so many levels and she always met everyone she met right where they were on life’s path. Her love and empathy were boundless indeed and to even think of a world without her strong, yet loving soul walking among us is absolutely heartbreaking. Thank you, Sylvia, for leading by example, for continually reminding us that you can never love too much, and for always living by the scripture do unto others as you’d have done unto you. May your legacy of love be so vivid in the hearts and minds of those left behind that others may never notice your absence. May the Lord bless and keep your beautiful soul safe in His loving arms until we all meet again.

A funeral service will be held at 1 PM, Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where friends may call after 11 AM until the time of the service. The burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.
He was born on May 21, 1938, in Chicago, IL, to Robert and Dorothy Henle. Chuck was raised in Chicago and later attended Hillsdale College in Michigan, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business. On December 27, 1959, he married the love of his life, Ann Turner, in Belvidere, IL.
Chuck began his career with United States Gypsum Company, where his hard work, leadership, and dedication led him to retire early as Director of Regional Sales. He and Ann made their home in Naperville, IL, where they lived for 25 years and raised their two daughters, Cathie Henle-Lewis and Carole Shutts. Following his early retirement, Chuck and Ann followed their entrepreneurial spirit and opened the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Galena. For 20 years, they poured their hearts into the business, creating long-lasting friendships and sweet memories with everyone who walked through their doors. In his later years, Chuck continued to share his energy, warmth, and humor by helping at Cathie and Dave’s store, Great American Popcorn Co., where he loved handing out samples and bantering with customers. He quickly became a local favorite — known to many as “Chocolate Charlie,” or the “popcorn sample man”. To his family, though, he was so much more: a loving father, proud grandpa, and adoring great grandpa. Chuck cherished time spent with family and friends, loved fishing, and was always ready with a warm smile and one of his famously terrible jokes.
He is survived by his two daughters, Cathie Henle-Lewis (David) and Carole Shutts, both of Galena; four grandchildren, CW2 Andrew Koenig of Rochelle, Victoria Manley (Jason) of Galena, Zachary Lewis of Galena, and 1LT Brett Shutts of Clarksville, TN; and seven great-grandchildren, Connor Lewis, Brantley Koenig, Madeline Koenig, Amelia Lewis, William Lewis, Charlotte Manley, and Noah Manley. He is also survived by his brother William “Bill” Henle (Lee-Ann) of Quartzsite, AZ.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Ann, brother-in-law Lt. Col. Ronald D. Turner, and sister-in-law Susan Turner.
Chuck leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless memories that will continue to warm the hearts of all who knew him. His family takes comfort in knowing he is now reunited with Ann, hand in hand once again. A heartfelt thank you to Ramona Carvajal for her many years of dedication and commitment to the care of Chuck.
A special thank you to the Galena Fire Department, Galena EMS, Galena Police Department, Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, East Dubuque Fire Department, and the staff at Midwest Medical Center for their kindness and care.

Chase L. Manemann

Chase Lucas Manemann, 25, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly at his home on October 7th, 2025, following some health issues. To celebrate Chase’s life family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 5:45 p.m., on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. There will be a service with sharing held at 6:00 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
Born at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque on August 31, 2000, to parents Dale and Ginny Manemann, Chase was raised and grew to adulthood in a large and loving family. As a child, his greatest joys included spending time with his cousins, exploring the field and forest at the Pape-Bahl family cottage, racing through the water and adventure parks on the annual trip to the Wisconsin Dells, and skateboarding along the Chole Creek Trail. Chase possessed a keen but restless intelligence, he was fascinated by the world around him. He loved pulling appliances apart to figure out what made them tick, and his lifelong interests in welding and electricity grew out of this active mind that was always searching to learn the hows and the whys of the world. As a young adult, he graduated from the Alternative Learning Center and Hempstead Senior High School in 2019, where he participated in the Soccer, Football, and Wrestling teams. During this time he worked at Sunnycrest Manor, where he made lifelong friendships with the residents he supported and who, he took pains to visit even years after he left. In 2023, he earned his Associate’s degree in Industrial Maintenance from Northeast Iowa Community College, a feat for which he was immensely proud. He loved music and attending live concerts, playing video games and lifting weights with his friends. Chase was unapologetically himself: a young man with a fierce sense of social justice, who felt deeply for friends and strangers alike. His ability to pull out a profound phrase at the right moment underscored a deep empathy and a genuine heart.
Chase struggled with his health and his most profound battle was with schizophrenia. He was very open about this diagnosis and the barriers and stigma it produced. But he fought, every day, to overcome both physical and mental ailments and he spent the last several years of his life a victor. His mind was fully his and his old loves resurfaced. The curious, witty boy became a great man of unparalleled kindness. His experiences with both mental and physical diseases did not make him kind- it was his natural inclination towards good that allowed him to bear those trials with a strength of will that few possess. It was also this that sparked his interest in the human mind, and, like the appliances of his childhood, Chase devoted his time to learning everything there was to know about the human mind: how did it all work? Why did his mind work the way that it did?
He loved all animals, especially his dogs, Posey, Daisy, Amira and Gaia and his cats, Squeaky “Toni” and Cleo aka “the devil cat”.
Chase is survived by his devoted parents, Dale and Ginny, of Dubuque, his sister Michelle, maternal grandmother Mary Kay Bahl of Asbury, and paternal grandfather Jim Manemann of Dubuque. He was dearly loved by his extended family, paternal uncles Michael (Juanita) Manemann, Mark (Vicky) Manemann, Danny Manemann, Dean (Diane) Manemann all of Dubuque, and maternal uncles Roger (Jennifer) Bahl, Jamie (Theresa Valentine) Bahl, of Dubuque, and maternal aunts Sandra Bahl of Dubuque and Jody (Jeff) Unsen of Marion, IA. His network stretched far and wide, with his 17 first cousins and their spouses and children, great-aunts and great-uncles, and dear friends, including Dylan and Nic. Special cousins include Joseph Bahl, Matthew Bahl, Lucas Unsen, and Alex Manemann.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Debra Manemann, maternal grandfather, Roger W. Bahl, and two brothers: Shane Roger Manemann and Seth Axl Manemann.
May you remember Chase for his clever sense of humor, his Wikipedia-sized knowledge of the neurotransmitters, his kindness, and his abiding love for those he knew and those he was never able to meet.
Special thanks to the extensive village that supported Chase: foremost, the ACT team at Hillcrest, including Jessica Dunne, and his peer support network. He often expressed his gratitude towards his former child psychologist, Dr. Kuperman at the University of Iowa Hospital. Thank you to his friends, old and new, who cared and loved him.
A Chase Manemann Memorial Fund has been established to assist with Chase’s funeral services and support his favorite charities. https://giveahand.com/fundraiser/chase-manemann-unexpected-passing-no-life-insurance
