David J. Elgin

David J. Elgin, 91, of Dubuque passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at Mercy Hospital.  Visitation will be from 2 to 6 pm Sunday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road where there will be a parish wake service at 5:30 pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am Monday at Holy Ghost Church with Rev. Jim Miller officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Dave was born August 18, 1930 in Dubuque, son of Aloysius Elgin and Marie (Hayes) Elgin.  As a teen, Dave began driving cab in Dubuque which launched him toward his lifelong passion and profession of truck-driving.  He drove truck for various companies in Dubuque (B&G, Briggs, CCX, Conway, and American) for over fifty years.  Dave prided himself on being a member of the Million Mile Club, having no accidents while driving for more than a million miles.   Safety in driving was a priority for him which he passed on to his family.

On November 17, 1947 he married Jeanette Nelson at St. Raphael Cathedral.  She preceded him in death on November 14, 2017, just three days shy of their 70th wedding anniversary.  Dave and Jeanette lived on Broadway Street in Dubuque for most of their married life.

Dave was first and foremost a family man.  He was loyal and dedicated to his wife, Jeanette, and their nine children and many grandchildren.  Throughout his life he was a hard worker who served his family, sacrificing to give his children a better life.  While not highly educated, he was a wise man, teaching his family the value of a dollar while putting his kids through college.  He always enjoyed going through ads, clipping coupons, and finding a good deal.  Dave Elgin wrote the book on common sense.

In his younger years, he was an accomplished fast pitch softball player, and was recently nominated to the Dubuque Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame.  He was a dedicated Catholic, a lifelong member of Holy Ghost, and was a past president of the Wahlert Booster Club.

In their early years, Dave and Jeanette enjoyed swing dancing at the Melody Mill and The Circle; and in their later years, they took up ballroom dancing.  Dave and Jeanette also enjoyed playing Euchre with family and friends.
Dave loved animals.  He enjoyed walking with his dog while visiting the neighborhood squirrels, chipmunks and birds.  He loved giving treats to his grand pets.

Dave is survived by eight children:  David (Mary) Elgin of Cedar Rapids, IA; Dennis (Roma) Elgin of Seal Beach, CA; Dr. Drew (Tina) Elgin of Frisco, CO; Denice (Kevin) Rhomberg of Mentor, OH; Doreen (Jeff) Barta of Cedar Rapids, IA; Denette Kellogg of Dubuque; Darla (Gregory Maisel) Elgin of Woodbury, MN; and Darcy (Randy) Jones of Woodbury, MN; and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by a sister, Nancy Schueller, and a brother, John Elgin, both of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette; daughter, Diane DeMaio; parents, Aloysius and Marie Elgin; stepmother, Louise Elgin; three brothers, Larry, Gary, and Norman Elgin; and his beloved dog Brutus.

Nancy K. Meisenburg

Nancy K. (Richmon) Meisenburg, age 54, of Dubuque, passed away as the result of a car accident at 2:29 p.m., on Sunday, December 5, 2021, at MercyOne Dubuque.  To celebrate Nancy’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at Behr Funeral Home, with Pastor Lynn Spicer officiating.

Nancy was born on June 27, 1967, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Simon and Clara (Fast) Richmon.

Nancy attended school in Dubuque before starting her family.  She had 4 wonderful daughters, who meant the world to her.  When the girls starting having their own babies Nancy was overjoyed to become a doting grandma.  She had special nicknames for all of them and called them her “kissy-face” grandchildren.  Her family was truly her whole world.  She loved spending time with everyone and traveling, especially to visit her sister, Tammy, in Indiana.  She was a kindhearted woman who always put the needs of others before her own.  She had a goofy personality which made her the life of the party and always kept everyone laughing.  Nancy took meticulous care of her own home and devoted her working career to housekeeping.  When she found some time for herself, Nancy enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors and loved to go walking.  We are heartbroken at losing our wonderful mom, grandma and sister at the young age of 54.  The world was definitely a better place because Nancy was here, and she will be missed more than words can say.

Phoebe C. Shepherd

Phoebe C. (Casey) Shepherd, age 86, of Olin, Iowa, passed away at 10:48 p.m., on Friday, December 3, 2021, at UnityPoint Health St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.  To celebrate Phoebe’s life, family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, with Deacon John Stierman officiating.  Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, on Thursday, at Behr Funeral Home.

Phoebe was born on April 30, 1935, in Dubuque, daughter of John Harold and Viola (Harris) Casey.

Phoebe was raised in Dubuque where she graduated from Dubuque Senior High School.  She married John William Eimer, and they had 5 children together in the first 3 years, which in those days was quite a challenge, and later added 3 more children to the family.  They later divorced and she remarried Jim Lippstock in 1970, then Fred Livens in 1977.  She lastly married Bill Shepherd in 1993, and they were together for 24 years, before he sadly passed away in 2017.  Luckily, all of her children would reconnect in 1987, allowing Phoebe to reconnect with them.  She started working as a candy striper at Mercy Hospital, becoming an LPN and going on to do in home care for the elderly.  Phoebe’s faith was important to her and she enjoyed attending church and singing in the choir.  She also liked Coca Cola, chocolate and anything that was the color red.  We are saddened at losing Phoebe, but know that she is now resting peacefully, free of all of the health challenges she has faced these past years.

Donald M. Furuseth

Donald Maxwell Furuseth, 90, of Bernard, Iowa, passed away on Monday, December 6, 2021 at River Bend Retirement Community in Cascade.

A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 13, 2021, with a visitation from 9-11 a.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, Iowa. Burial will follow at the Dubuque Memorial Gardens with military honors by Dubuque Marine Corps League, and Epworth’s American Legion John White Post 650. The family encourages mask wearing when attending.

Donald was born on March 15, 1931 in Nashua, Iowa to Oscar and Neva (Coburn) Furuseth. He graduated from high school in Willow Springs, Missouri. He then went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps from 1951-1954 in Korea. On January 17, 1959, Donald married Nancy Harberg at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.  He was employed as a long-distance semi-driver, and was a member of Teamster when he drove for Ruan Transportation Management Systems. He was also a member of the American Legion John White Post 650.

After his family, his next love was the open road. He enjoyed good times with friends and family, and was always there to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

He is survived by his four daughters Susie (Don) Naderman of LaMotte, IA, Julie (Brian) Goetzinger of Maquoketa, IA, Wendy (Randy) Bergfeld of Cascade, IA, and Cindy (John) Peacock of Dubuque; 12 grandchildren Becky (Paul) Nowachek, Rachel and Amanda Naderman, Bridget (Michael Nims), Brittany, Brielle, Brianna Goetzinger, Heather (Justin) Goedken, Hunter (Rachel Pasker) Bergfeld, Ashley McAvan, Cody (Katlyn) Peacock, Abby (Chad) Dye; 12 great-grandchildren Emmett and Sam Nowachek, Bennett Goetzinger, Emma and Coy Goedken, Jazlynn and Jace Peacock, Calvin and Max McAvan, Madalynn Parker, Greenlee Peacock, and Wyatt Dye; and two sisters-in-law Pat and Margaret Furuseth.

He is preceded in death by his wife Nancy; his parents; mother and father-in-law; brothers Owen, Dean, and Leslie Furuseth; brother-in-law Art Harberg; sisters-in-law Lorrain Furuseth, and Jean Harberg; and grandsons Travis Bergfeld, and John Peacock III.

Janaan P. Eudaley

Janaan Patricia (Apel) Eudaley, age 94 passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 7 at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, IA.  A private family service will be held at a later date. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.

Jan was born on June 24, 1927, in Dubuque daughter of Francis and Angeline (Herkes) Apel. She would later marry John C. Eudaley, the love of her life for 73 years. Jan and John moved to Dyersville in 1966 and would eventually retire to their dream home in Guttenberg, IA overlooking the Mississippi River. Jan worked at the Dubuque Packing Co. for 30 years and would later work at Front Street Limited in Guttenberg. Jan loved spending time with family and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and an avid cook.

Surviving is her son, Rick Eudaley (Deb Osterhaus), Miromar Lakes, FL, two granddaughters, Jodi (Doug) Klostermann, Dyersville, IA; and Wendy (Brent) Wright, Miromar Lakes, FL. Her great-grandchildren Cole Klostermann, Conner Klostermann (Lauren Faust), Brittni Wright, and Madison Wright. A sister Diane Post, of Hastings, Minn., a sister in-law Norma Apel, of Dubuque, many nieces and nephews and her special friend, Bill Frederick of Dubuque.

She is preceded in death by her husband John; parents Francis and Angeline (Herkes) Apel, brother Francis Apel, sister Norma Beam, brothers-in-law William Beam, and Robert Post.

Chester Nainys

Chester “Chet” Nainys, 82, of Galena, IL, passed away on December 6, 2021. A private family ceremony will be held at a later date. Cremation rites will be accorded. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family.

Chet always had a joke for anyone who would listen and was passionate about all sports, especially the Chicago Bears, Cubs, and Blackhawks.

He is survived by his wife Joyce of Galena; his daughter, Michelle (Scott) Bunyer of Pewaukee, WI; and his grandchildren, Allison and Joshua.

He was preceded in death by his son Mike Nainys and his parents Bruno and Elena Nainys.

Danielle M. McGurn

Danielle Marie (Hefel) McGurn, 42, of East Dubuque, IL unexpectedly gained her “Red Bird Wings” after a brief illness on December 3rd, 2021.

Danielle was born on July 16th, 1979 in Dubuque, IA to Dan and Kathy Hefel. She graduated from East Dubuque High School in 1998. Danielle went on to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where she earned a degree in Communications and Photography in 2003.

Danielle married Michael McGurn on June 29th, 2013 in Dubuque and she was then blessed with Peityn Lorraine McGurn in October 2015. Peityn instantly became the center of Danielle’s world, they were inseparable. They most enjoyed going to see family and friends in addition to shopping trips together (especially to the “Blue Store”). Danielle had a passion for taking photos (always sure to take plenty) and loved rooting on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Danielle will always be remembered for her quick wit but will be forever known for her enormous heart of gold. She was always there, willing to help anyone in whatever way that she possibly could, and she was the best listener someone could ever have. She was truly an amazing mother, sister, daughter, and friend.

Those left to honor Danielle’s memory include her daughter Peityn Lorraine McGurn and husband Mike. Her siblings Jolene (Jason) Timmerman, Nicole Hefel, and Brian Hefel all of East Dubuque. Her nieces, nephews, and great-nieces all of which she treated as her own. Her Godmother, Delaine Gartner, as well as her many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Danielle was preceded in death by her parents Daniel and Kathleen (Maus) Hefel, her grandparents, and her Godfather, Gerald “Jerry” Rapp.

The family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support, it is much appreciated and navigating these difficult times wouldn’t be possible without it. Also, a special thanks to the Menominee-Dunleith Fire Department, volunteers, and first responders.

June E. Wilson

June Elizabeth Wilson, 80, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on June 13, 1941, in rural Garber, the daughter of Eugene and Beulah (Funk) Palmer. June attended school in Dundee and then Manchester High School.

On May 31, 1958, June was united in marriage to Blaine L. Wilson in Manchester. Five children were born to this union. For many years June worked as a waitress. She retired due to health reasons.

June loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She enjoyed sewing and playing bingo. June liked cheering for the Green Bay Packers. She loved her pet dogs.

Survivors include her three children, Bill (Theresa) Wilson of Manchester, Dixie (Irvin) McDowell of Masonville, and Debbie (Tom) McDowell of Oneida; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a special niece, Cathy Cook of Manchester; one sister, Betty (Francis) Smith; two daughters-in-law, Kim Wilson and Cindy Wilson; and several nieces and nephews.

June was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Blaine L. Wilson in 1998; two sons, Dennis Wilson and Donnie Wilson; and one brother, Paul Funk.

Joan M. Baxter-Rooney

Joan M. Baxter-Rooney, age 81, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at her home.  To celebrate Joan’s life, family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., on Friday, December 10, 2021, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m., on Friday at Behr Funeral Home, with Rev. Steven M. Garner officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Joan was born on August 21, 1940, in Madison, Wisconsin, daughter of Austin and Margaret (Hess) Baxter.

Joan graduated from high school and went on to Madison Business School.  She was united in marriage to Charles Rooney, and they were blessed with 3 sons together before going their separate ways.  She was a hard worker and was lastly employed with the Dubuque John Deere Works doing clean up in the foundry until her well earned retirement.  She was a member of Sacred Heart Sacrament Church in Bethany, Missouri, before moving to Dubuque where she joined Sacred Heart Church.  In her free time, Joan loved to travel and spend time with her family.  Joan enjoyed watching classic movies on TCM, as well as Perry Mason and Matlock.  She also loved playing cards, talking on the phone with her sister Judy and enjoying an ice cold beverage on occasion.  Joan was a sweet woman who loved life and was always quick to share a laugh with family and friends.  We are heartbroken at losing our wonderful mom, grandma, great-grandma and sister, but know that she is now resting peacefully and happily reunited with all of her loved ones in Heaven.

Judy S. Manning

Judy Sue Manning, 51, of Lost Nation, Iowa, and formerly of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Saturday morning, November 27, 2021, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating her life will be held from 3 to 6 P.M., Monday, December 13, 2021, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Cremation has taken place and burial will be at a later date.

Judy Sue Wagner was born on June 10, 1970 in Iowa to Gene and Loretta (Snyder) Wagner.  She was a 1989 graduate of Maquoketa Community High School.  She married Robert A. Manning on March 19, 1994 in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Judy first worked for several years at Maquoketa State Bank in the housekeeping department.  For over 20 years she has worked at WALMART in Maquoketa in several different capacities.  She enjoyed shopping at Goodwill and especially going 4-wheeling.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Robert A. “Bob” Manning of Lost Nation, IA; her father, Gene Wagner; siblings, Tracy, Emily and Nancy; and a nephew, Phillip.  She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents, and her mother Loretta.

Dyan M. Burke

Dyan M. Burke, age 70, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on Dec. 4, 2021, at the home of her sister, surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Dyan’s life, her Celebration of Life will be held from 12:00 until 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021, at Steeple Square, 101 E. 15^th Street in Dubuque.  Dyan’s memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dianne Grace officiating.  A private family burial will be held at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Dyan’s family.

Dyan was born on July 8, 1951, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Clarence M. and Mary C. (Noesges) Hirsch.  Dyan was a graduate of Wahlert High School class of 1969, then attended and graduated from Capri Cosmetology College.  She worked for 18 years in different salons in Dubuque, lastly at Style Masters until 1988. Eventually she found her way into her new circle of friends at Thermolyne (Thermo-Fisher).  Dyan worked there for 23 years until they closed, and was then employed at Anderson Window and Door.  She also worked part-time at Econofoods, and most recently had invested over 7 years in the wine and spirits department at Hy-Vee in Asbury, until her recent cancer diagnosis became an unfortunate reality.   She always had a determined spirit, and her home life was no different than her work life, always giving 100%.  Dyan has served as treasurer of her condo association for over 17 years.  In her free-time, she enjoyed both reading and music.  Fiction novels were among her favorites, and some classic rock would always provide a relaxing mood in her heart and soul.  She was also one of the original members of the 1969 Lunch Club, and Thermo-Fisher retirement lunch group.   It’s difficult to imagine a world without Dyan’s bright and loving spirit by our side and we pray that the beautiful memories which she leaves behind will help to heal the broken hearts we possess today.  Thank you, Dyan, for continually being a positive influence in the world around you and may the Lord hold you safely in His loving hands until we meet again.

Donald J. Augustin, 86 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021, of congestive heart failure at Unity Point Medical Center.

Dorothy M. Augustin, 86 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away Sunday, December 5, 2021, of natural causes at home, surrounded by her children.

A “Casual” visitation will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, no formal visitation line will be held, the family encourages all to mingle. An informal service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Following the service, a celebration of life will be held at Randy (Buck) Simon’s shop – Midwest Diesel Tuning and Dyno, 10601 Woodgate Drive, Dubuque, Iowa 52003. Everyone is welcome to join the family.

Don was born on March 29, 1935, son of Frank and Frances (Felder) Augustin.  Dorothy was born on June 9, 1935, daughter of John and Mayme (Markus) Weimerskirch.  Don and Dorothy were married on April 19, 1955, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church.  They shared 66+ years of marriage.

Don started his heavy equipment operator career with Clemens & Smith Construction, which later became FN Smith Construction and then went on to work for Tschiggfrie Excavating in Dubuque, IA.  Don also worked for IEI Barge Service in East Dubuque, IL, where he retired in 1997.

When retirement was not enough for Don, he went to work at the Dubuque Airport as a Security Agent and then on to work at Walmart as a Greeter, so he could see all of his friends and family.  He enjoyed greeting everyone that walked in the door and loved to give hugs.  He reluctantly retired again in 2019, due to health issues.

Dorothy worked many jobs throughout her life, starting at Crystal Lake Cave as a tour guide, at the Dubuque Packing Company, in the Ham Boning Department, Lombardi’s Ballroom, Mercy Hospital and her entire life raising eight children and their families.

Don and Dorothy were co-owners of Lombardi’s Ballroom.

They enjoyed spending time at the Key West Sportsmen’s Club.  They also looked forward to family breakfast every Sunday morning, followed by cards with family and friends; they also enjoyed coffee time with their friends at Hardee’s.  They thoroughly enjoyed life.

They are survived by their children Rick (Jenny Robb) Mesa, AZ, Jean, Ron (Lisa) Hulbert, Oklahoma, Connie Simon (Jay Williams), Jim (Donna), Mary (Jim) Gansen, Zwingle, IA, Ann Sippel (Rick Tittle, Jr), 25 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, with 3 more on the way.  Don’s sister Sandra Mueller; Dorothy’s siblings Marion Clemens, John Weimerskirch and Sue Kemp; along many nieces and nephews.

They were preceded in death by their parents, a son, Tom, grandchildren, Jeana Simon and Carter Simon, Don’s brother Frank, Jr., Dorothy’s brother Gerald Weimerskirch and sister Evelyn Knockel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dubuque in lieu of flowers.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Unity Point Medical Center doctors and nurses and all the staff for making Don’s final days peaceful and to all the staff of Hospice of Dubuque for making Dorothy’s final days comfortable.

Clay E. DeMoss

Clay E. DeMoss, 66, of Eldora, Iowa, and formerly of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Saturday morning, November 4, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

At Peace Cremation Services have been provided by Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  No public services are planned at this time.

Clay Everett DeMoss was born on October 17, 1955 in Monticello, Iowa, to Everett Keith and Veleta Marion (Howell) DeMoss.  He grew up in the Monmouth area.  He married Julie Schau on October 25, 1980 in Canton, Iowa.  Three children were born to this union, Megan, Keith and Derek.

Clay had worked at hog confinements for several years and for the past twenty years had been a cattle farmer with cattle in both the Eldora area and the Canton area.  He loved raising cattle and his pride and joy was his farm near Canton.

Clay is survived by his children, Megan (Daniel) Will of Calamus, IA, Keith DeMoss of Andrew, IA, and Derek (Erin) DeMoss of Dixon, IA; a brother, Rick (Karen) DeMoss of Maquoketa, IA; a sister, Sharon (Mike) Moore of Maquoketa, IA; and 9 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sibling, and a sister Karla.

Lorraine Regan

Lorraine “Lorri” Regan, 64, of Dubuque, died Sunday, December 5, 2021, at her home.

Visitation for Lorri will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will be at Mount Calvary at a later date.

Lorraine was born October 27, 1957, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Frank and Naomi Kelley Regan.

She was a 1976 graduate of Hempstead High School. She graduated from Clark University in 1980 and received her Master’s Degree from Iowa State University in 1982.

Lorraine was a social worker.

She enjoyed reading, was an animal lover, and cherished time with her family.

Survivors include her mother, Naomi Regan of Dubuque; one brother, Daniel (Carol) Regan of Peosta, IA; one sister, Kelli (Lonie) Brown of Dubuque; one nephew, Kevin (Abigail) Regan; and three nieces, Codi (Mike) Jasper, and Kristan and Hannah Brown.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Steven L. Weiland

Steven Lloyd Weiland, 61, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on December 4, 2021.

Per Steve’s wishes, no visitation or service will be held. Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. is assisting the family.

Steve was born on January 28, 1960, in Dubuque, Iowa to Lloyd Lee and Mary Kay (Whitfield) Weiland. He attended Resurrection, graduated from Stephen Hempstead High School in 1978, and then studied at a trade school for automotive repair. On June 17, 2000, he married Debra Lynn Hittenmiller. Steve was the owner and operator of Cedar Cross Svc Inc of Dubuque, Iowa for over 30 years.

Steve was an outdoor enthusiast who was passionate about hunting, fishing, camping, and boating. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, and spending time at “the lake” in Lake of the Ozark, Missouri.

He is survived by his wife Debra L. Weiland; son Jesse L. Weiland; daughter April M. Weiland; step-sons Jason R. (Amy) Humke, and Jeremy M. Humke; mother Mary K. Weiland; sisters Angella (Harry) Anen, Cindy (Ron) Frommelt, Tammy (Rod) Link, and Melanie (Ken) Offerman; brother Sam (Jessie) Weiland; granddaughters Ava Lee, and Emily Humke; grandsons Karsen Eimer, Brody Trowbridge, and Robbie Humke; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Steve is preceded in death by his father, Lloyd L. Weiland, and brother, Mike Weiland.
