The Funeral Service for Irene will be 11:00 am Monday, December 27, 2021, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory. Private burial will be in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.
Irene, the youngest and last surviving child of John J & Elizabeth Fischer Lachman, was born December 10, 1932, in Dubuque.
She was a 1950 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School.
She married Charles A. Selensky, March 2, 1957. As a super mom to three kids, she was PTA president, Scout leader, Girl Scout Cookie chair and number one room mother. She was always first to volunteer to make wonderful treats for fundraising bake sales. Irene and her family enjoyed summer weekends on Mississippi sandbars on their houseboat. In retirement, she and Chuck spent time together camping in their RV. One of our favorite mom memories is summer days fishing at the Dubuque Marina and being coached when we got a bite, “don’t horse it in” by her and her sister Grace. We will miss her wicked sense of humor and smile. She’s left us knowing we were well-loved.
Irene is survived by her husband, daughter Cindy (Doug) Selensky Foster of Fuquay-Varina, NC and son Brian (Rhonda) of Peosta. She is also survived by grandchildren Erin (Kevin) Jordan of Fuquay-Varina; Amber (Jeremy) Smith of Holly Springs, NC; Zachary & Samantha Selensky of Peosta; great grandchildren Jake & Emma Grace Smith and Kyson & Jayden Jordan.

On October 19, 1991, he married Susan “Sue” Curler at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. The two enjoyed their many trips together to Mexico, especially Cancun and Puerto Aventuras. Jauquetta L. Schmiedeskamp
Jauquetta L. “Jack” Schmiedeskamp, age 71, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of California, completed her earthly journey on December 19, 2021, at home, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Jack’s life, a private family service is being held. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Jauquetta’s family.
Jack was born on October 5, 1950, in Tyler, TX, a daughter to Chester and Harline (Rooks) Holloway, Jr. She was a very gifted and talented artist from an early age and would discover countless ways to share her gifts with the world throughout her entire life. Jack was a committed teacher who always appreciated the opportunity to help others develop their skills as well. She enjoyed everything from porcelain art to drawing to cake decoration and sugar art. Jack absolutely excelled in every medium she ventured into to and her love for the craft never faded. She had her very own art corner at the Santa Clara County Fair each year and enjoyed showing the intrigued onlooker’s how many of the finished products they were looking at had actually come to life. Jack had a natural ability to visualize the finished pieces in her mind’s eye and thoroughly enjoyed moving step by step through the process until others could eventually see what she had seen from the beginning. She was a proud member of the Santa Clara Valley Porcelain Artists, the International Porcelain Art Teachers, the California Association of Artists, along with the Isaac Walton League of Dubuque, and the NRA-Dubuque Chapter. But, creating magical works of art that others could enjoy for years, or making a cake that looked just like an authentic cowboy hat just sitting on the table was not enough for Jack. She also enjoyed reading extensively and putting together 5-star meals for everyone to enjoy at the dining room table. Jack’s talents in the kitchen were second to none. She had honed her skills watching Julia Child during the original black and white days and could recreate almost any meal she came across. Jack was an inspired spirit who embraced life on so many levels that it was actually difficult to keep up with her forward momentum at times. She savored the good things in life and didn’t allow the trivial things to impact her world when they tried. Jack will be forever loved and adored by all who knew her and the beautiful memories which she leaves behind will help to ease the pain as we begin to move into this new reality without Jack’s light helping to brighten our way as well. Thank you, Jack, for teaching us to see beyond the surface and to always be sure to look a little deeper to potentially discover the real moments at hand. May God bless you and keep you safe in His loving arms until we all meet again.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Jack include,
her loving husband,
James “Jim” Tonjum, Dubuque, IA;
her children,

her grandchildren,
Olivia Gleason, Cheyenne Tonjum, Hayden Reagan, Elizabeth Reagan, and Ivan Reagan;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

After graduating from High School, Vernon entered the service and was stationed at The Great Lakes Naval base in Chicago where they sent him for training as a communication specialist at Texas A&M University. The title he earned at Texas A&M was that of a Morse Code translator. He served his country from 1944 to 1946 aboard the naval vessel the “Neshoba,” a transport ship for troops and prisoners. His title as a Morse Code translator was put to use daily. After discharge from the service in 1946, he returned to Scales Mound where Vernon started farming on shares with his dad at the “Jesus Saves Rock” farm.
In 1951 he bought farmland in the east Galena Township where he and Ruth lived and raised their family. Many long days were spent putting crops in, tending to his milk cows, raising pigs, and caring for the land. In his spare time he drove a school bus for the Scales Mound school district. Vernon decided to retire from farming in 1964 and went to work at the John Deere plant in Dubuque, Iowa.
In 1984 after 20 years of working at John Deere it was time to retire and enjoy life. In retirement, Vernon ran a lawn care business where he mowed up to 40 yards at the Apple Canyon Lake. For fun he joined a men’s “horse shoe” pitching group where he threw many “ringers” and was a hard man to beat. He was a very active member of the Scales Mound Lions club, always ready to volunteer his time to support the cause. Winters were spent in Florida swinging the golf clubs, having a cold beer with friends, and enjoying a meal of chicken wings. When the grandchildren started school sports, Vernon would not miss a game, always sitting on the top row cheering them on.
Polka dancing was at the top of Vernon and Ruth’s list of things to do. Camping, fishing, boating, and sleepovers with the grandkids was an endless adventure and so many precious memories will be cherished forever. He always enjoyed a home-cooked meal with family and talked a lot about his younger years. He was proud to be a World War II veteran and enjoyed his trip to Washington DC on the Honor Flight to see the many memorials in their honor.
You knew it was summer when you saw Vernon on his front porch with his hand in the air waving to all passing motorist (even if he didn’t know them.) He will be greatly missed by all, but we know that Vernon and Ruth will be together again with their hands in the air, waving to all of us from above.

Dale Weiland
Dale Weiland passed away December 11, 2021 at Mercy Medical Center with his family at his side.
He was born November 12, 1948 to Charles and Florence (Herbst) Weiland. He had one brother, David. Dale lost his father in April 1975. He had a special bond with his father and missed him every day of his life.
His celebration of life will be Sunday, January 9, 2022 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home. Full military honors will be rendered at 3:00 pm by the Iowa Army National Guard Honor Guard, Dubuque Marine Corps League, and the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Association.
He was a 1967 graduate of Wahlert High School. In 1968, he was drafted and sent to Vietnam. Loyalty and fidelity were important to Dale. Dale was a loyal friend and had friendships that were 50 years old. Two of these friends were Pat Ferris of Appleton, WI and the late Fred Timmerman of Dubuque. He was married to Marcia for over 49 years.
He was a proud Vietnam veteran and loved the time he spent at the Veterans Freedom Center. Dale had great respect for Jim Wagner. Two special veteran friends were Jack Sawvel, who drove Dale to his appointments in Iowa City and Dan Weig. Dale loved his family, country, and of course his truck. He loved animals, especially dogs and they loved him back. After he retired, he volunteered at the Dubuque Humane Society.
His pride and joy were his two sons, Greg and Aaron. They grew to be men who are hardworking, honest, and fun to be around. He loved the fact that they always stood on their own two feet. He also loved to hear about the antics of his four grandchildren, Taylor, Tristan, Trey, and Maddie. He was proud of who they were becoming in their lives.
Dale is survived by his wife, Marcia; sons, Greg (Jessica) and Aaron (Jessica); his four grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary Beth Weiland of Dubuque, Lisa (Jeff) Klima, David (Jan) and Jeff (Sue) Neuville, all off Green Bay, WI; special cousins, Louise (Donny) Stoffel of Rickardsville, IA, Jane Schwartz and Linda Knockel of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David; father and mother-in-law, Bernard and Pearl Neuville; as well as his dear “adopted” mother, Moya Breitbach.
The family requests no flowers, in lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Veterans Freedom Center or the Dubuque Humane Society.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the nurses at Mercy’s ICU who all have angel wings and to the kind and compassionate Dr. Zhengjin Cao.
