Robert L. Smart

Robert “Bob” Lee Smart, 85, of Dubuque, died Friday, June 11, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 11:15 am Tuesday June 15, 2021 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

The Funeral Service for Bob will be 11:30 am Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Derek Rosenstiel officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque. The service will be live streamed on Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home’s Facebook page and will also be available to view later at www.hskfhcares.com.

Robert was born May 31, 1936, in Scales Mound, IL, the son of William E. and Leona E. Wasmund Smart. On April 28, 1956, he married Carol Ann Peebles at Zion Lutheran Church in Schapville, IL.

He graduated from Scales Mound High School in 1954.

He worked as a Service Manager for Lime Rock Springs Co.

He was a member of  Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.  He enjoyed working on cars, fixing everything and was a fan of AM radio.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; one daughter, Stacey S. Tittle of Dubuque; two sons, Steven L. Smart of Thailand, and Michael D. (Timothea) Smart of Helena, MT; and several special friends including, Bob, Kelly, Allison, and Adam Curtis and Cindy Henkel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother-in-law, Wayne (Eileen) Peebles.

A special thank you to the OR and ICU staff and Doctors at MercyOne for their care of Bob and Hospice of Dubuque.

Janet Dwane

Janet Dwane, 78, of Dubuque passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, June 9, 2021 with family by her side. Visitation will be held at St, Anthony Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 from 09:00-10:30, immediately followed by the service at 10:30. Janet was born September 29th, 1942 in Dubuque, Iowa daughter of Edward and Ermelinda (Schlickman) Travis, where she lived almost all of her life, living a few years in “the basement” in Hazel Green, Wisconsin after marriage to John Dwane, until moving back to Dubuque with John and their, then, three young children. She graduated from Dubuque Wahlert High School and worked 34 years at Finley Hospital, retiring as a Patient Care Tech in 2009.

She enjoyed cheering on the Chicago Cubs, as well as listening to the song “Go Cubs Go”. Kenny Rogers, The Carpenters, Abba, and the Mama Mia soundtrack rounded out the pleasurable listening experience. Not to mention Christmas music knew no season.

Other interests she shared with family and friends included card games, especially Euchre and King’s Corner, as well as games of Yahtzee, crafting of macramé, cross stitch, attending craft shows, watching Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, playing miniature golf, and eating pretzel bites at the mall. In fact, she enjoyed food so much, after eating lunch she might ask “What are we doing for supper?”

She also took pleasure in taking walks with others in around her neighborhood, as well as the occasional hike at E.B. Lyons and Swiss Valley, the Port of Dubuque, and the arboretum. She collected many things dolphin and Pepsi-themed.  Among her adventures in travel, accompanied by like-individuals,  were Japan, Ireland, Virginia, Kansas, Omaha, New Mexico, Disney World and Washington D.C., She also took great pleasure in the company of her grandkids.

One of her favorite sayings when one entered a room was “Pull up a chair and sit on the floor”.  For the past decades her unique humor extended to entertaining/annoying people with her turkey call and barking sound effects.  Kids and adults alike would laugh, while others gave her the side eye. She found delight in both reactions.

Janet is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, John, five children; Phillip (Angela) Dwane, Manassas, Virginia, Christopher Dwane, Dubuque, Iowa, Colleen Dwane, Dubuque, Iowa, Kerri Dwane, Glendale, Arizona, and Andra (Dwane) Getty, Olathe, Kansas. Seven grandchildren; Theresa, Elizabeth, Joseph, Gabriel, Katharine, Marissa, and Cameron. Two sisters; Joyce Gansen, Dubuque, IA, Jane Swift, Bondurant, IA.  Sister-in-law, Marcella (Engling) Travis. Plus many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Gerald Travis, Jackson “Jack” Travis, James “Jim” Travis, Clyde Travis, sister Jenny Mae (Travis) Engling.

A special thanks from our family to the dedicated nurses of Hospice of Dubuque for the wonderful and personal care taken with our loved one and keeping her comfortable during her final days, especially Alysa. Kevin M. Vondra

Kevin M. Vondra, 61, of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, died Thursday, June 10, 2021, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wisconsin. A Celebration of Life will be held 4-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at Sunset Lanes and Hall, Dickeyville, Wisconsin. Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is assisting the family.

Kevin was born on September 7, 1959, in Iowa, the son of Kenneth and Marcine (Smith) Vondra. He was employed at Prairie Farms for over 30 years, retiring in 2019.

Kevin enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing poker, baking, and picking both berries and walnuts. He attended auctions and flea markets, collecting a variety of items, including mementos of local dairy businesses. Kevin loved his family and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He enjoyed spending time with friends and lending a helping hand.

Survivors include his daughter, Katie Vondra, Dubuque, IA; two sons, Brad Vondra, East Dubuque, IL, and Mike (Nikki) Vondra, Dyersville, IA; three sisters, Kristine (Greg) Fry, Fennimore, WI, Mary Hultman, Baraboo, WI, and Laura (Arty) Moyer, Galena, IL; two brothers, Brian (Carolyn) Vondra, Spring Hills, KS, and Jim (Holly) Vondra, Mineral Point, WI; a brother-in-law, Rich Hardyman, Belleville, WI; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and Marcine Vondra; and a sister, Janet Hardyman.

Frederick T. Taft Jr.

Frederick T. “Buck” Taft, Jr., 85 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on June 10th, 2021, at Stonehill Care Center with family by his side.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 15th, 2021, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a memorial service with sharing time will be at 4:00 p.m. Entombment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Fred was born on November 11, 1935, in Dubuque, Iowa; the son of Frederick and LaVetta (Walsh) Taft Sr. He served in the US Naval Reserve and was an Army Parachutist.

On August 16, 1957, he married the love of his life Donna Mae Hielscher in Libertyville, IL. He and Donna owned and operated Village Bar Supper Club in Kieler, WI for 7 years. Fred also worked and retired from the Dubuque Packing Company after 42 years.

Buck was an avid Chicago Bear and Cubs fan; he enjoyed golfing, listening to music, John Wayne movies, playing the lottery and having a cold Miller High Life. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Donna; six children DeAnn Taft, of Green Bay, WI, Debra (Joseph) Fromment, of Dubuque, IA, Dean Taft, of Dubuque, IA, Denise (Paul) Bertsch, of Dubuque, Dori (Michael) Taft, of Whitewright, TX, and Danny (Scheryl) Taft, of Potosi, WI. Fifteen grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Michael A. Bennett, his sister Patricia Busch and a brother James Taft.

Donald J. Gronemus

Donald J. Gronemus, 67, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at University of Iowa Hospital following complications from heart surgery. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Cuba City. Following the service, burial will be at St. Rose Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be held Wednesday at the church from 9-11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is serving the family.

Don was born on April 2, 1954, in Vernon County, Wisconsin, to LeRoy and Mary (Flock) Gronemus. Don graduated from Cashton High School in 1972. Diploma in hand, Don and his twin brother, Dave,  joined the Navy. Upon returning to land, Don attended Western Wisconsin Technical Institute, where he earned his Associate of Applied Science in Farmstead Mechanization in 1978, specializing in stainless steel welding. His trade brought him to Cuba City, when he began working for Gile Surge. Don was then hired by Southwest Health Center, where he enjoyed a 30+ year career in maintenance, retiring in January, 2020.

Don is survived by his wife, Connie; his daughter, Manda (Travis) Then and grandson Colton of Cascade, Iowa; stepchildren Brittney Setzer and grandson Chance of Spokane, Wash., Dainon (Michelle) Setzer and grandson Lincoln of Spokane, Wash., Erin (Jay) Digman of Cuba City, and Beau (Candace) Droessler of Platteville; his three brothers, Dan (Catherine) Gronemus of Madison, Dave (Robin) Gronemus of Chesapeake, Va., Tom (Lindy) Gronemus of Viroqua; his two sisters, Jean (Tom) Myhre of La Crosse, and Sue (Scott) Schmitz of Cashton; brothers-in-law and sisters in-law; nieces and nephews; other relatives; and coworkers from Southwest Health Center, whom he thought of as a second family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepson Louie Droessler of Prairie du Chien.

Mary Ryan

Mary (Gail) Ryan, 78, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away peacefully at Mercy Medical Center Wednesday, June 9, 2021.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, where the parish scripture service will be at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 16th, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, East Dubuque, with Fr. Peter Snieg officiating.  Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery. The funeral mass will be live-streamed on The Miller Funeral Home Group Facebook Page.

Gail was born February 25, 1943 to Matt and Mary Margaret (Peg) Theisen in Dubuque and graduated from Wahlert High School in 1961.

On November 24, 1962 she married Ray Ryan, and had three children.  Renee (Rick) Golinvaux of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Joe Ryan (Beth Mohr) of East Dubuque, and Ron (Lisa) Ryan also of East Dubuque.  She was also blessed with two granddaughters, Kaylee Ryan of Denver, Colorado and Lindsey Ryan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Ray passed away on February 12, 2017.

Gail was a wonderful, loving Mother, Grandmother and friend.  She was a devout Catholic who enjoyed daily mass, even watching on her iPad when she could no longer attend in person.  She treasured her many, many hours in St. Mary’s Adoration Chapel and cherished her Mother’s Prayer group and Bible studies.

In her younger years, she was an accomplished and passionate bowler. That passion led to years of volunteer service in the Dubuqueland Women’s Bowling Association, culminating in her enshrinement into the DWBA Hall of Fame in 1999.

She enjoyed large family holidays, playing euchre or cribbage with friends and spending time with her family, grand dogs and grand cats.

Gail dedicated her entire life to the Publishing Industry. Beginning at William C. Brown and continuing with Shepherd Inc. and Carlisle Communications, creating many long lasting friendships along the way.  She enjoyed freelance editing right up to her last days.

She is also survived by two sisters, Karen Michels and Deb Theisen and two brothers, Wayne (Geri) Theisen and Mike (Donna) Theisen and sisters-in-law, Kay Steuck and Andy Ryan.  She is also survived by many loving Nieces and Nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Matt and Mary Margaret (Peg) Theisen, parents-in-law, Joseph and Alice Ryan, in-laws, Elmer Michels, Ted and Eileen Beaves, Paul and Geri Ryan, Bill Ryan, Bob Steuck and niece Margaret Michels.

James P. Cody

James Philip Cody, 72, of Godfrey, IL, died Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at OSF Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton, IL.

The Mass of Christian Burial for James will be 11:00 AM Friday, June 18, 2021, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church with Father Tom McDermott as the Celebrant. Visitation will be held one hour before the mass from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West. James was born May 4, 1949, in Dubuque, the son of Thomas James and Ann Murphy Cody.

James lived and worked at Beverly Farm in Godfrey, IL.

Survivors include one Aunt, Ellen Murphy Flood of Corpus Christi, TX; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Cody and Ann Murphy Cody Ginder and his step-father, John Ginder, and his sister, Jane Cody.

Memorials have been established for Albrecht Acres and Beverly Farm Foundation.

John W. Morehead

John W. Morehead, 52 of Galena, IL passed away unexpectedly Monday, June 7, 2021, at Meriter Hospital, Madison, WI. Graveside services will be 10:30 AM on June 19, 2021, at the Old Log Church Cemetery, located on Irwin Road 5 miles South of Hanover off of Blackjack Road all are welcome to attend. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family.

He was born March 17, 1969, in Rockford, IL. Later in life earned his GED and was very proud of this accomplishment. John enjoyed food prep and was a marvelous chef. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and was an avid Chicago BEARS fan. He was affiliated with Lord of Love Lutheran Church in Galena.

John is survived by his father, Steven Morehead and his stepfather, Leonard North, both of Galena, two sisters: Patricia (Terry) Best of Clinton, IA, and Theresa (Tommy) Hardison of Camanche, IA, his aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins by the dozens, and his very dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Jewell Morehead, maternal grandparents, Sidney and Edna White and his paternal grandparents, Stacey and Doris Morehead.

Michelle M. Allen

Michelle M. Allen, 59, of Galena, IL passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. The funeral service will be 11 AM, Monday, June 14, 2021, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Friends may call from 2 to 4 PM, Sunday, June 13, 2021, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel.  The burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.

She was born January 25, 1962, in Sterling, IL the daughter of Robert and Lois (Vlad) Brotheridge. Michelle graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1980. She was united in marriage to Steve Allen on July 16, 1983, at the United Methodist Church, Galena. Michelle began working as a news clerk at the Telegraph Herald in February of 2007 until November 2020. She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids, reconstructing her fairy garden, watching Forrest Gump, finding new arts and craft projects, and spending time on the pontoon. The “river is my happy place” was her favorite thing to say!  Michelle was a beautiful soul and the light in many lives. She was always one to brighten the room and get a laugh from anyone, even on their worst days. Her positivity towards others was something to admire. She will be missed by many, especially those that she held closest, who will continue to hold her close in their hearts.

Michelle is survived by, her husband, Steve of Galena, two sons, Matt (Ashley) of Galena, Doug (Jamie Hibberd Otis) of Oregon City, OR, three grandchildren, Payton, Wyatt, and Kinsley Allen, two brothers, Jon Brotheridge of Dubuque, IA, and Mark (Tammy) Brotheridge of Ft. Atkinson, WI, and her many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her father and mother-in-law, Robert (Mary) Allen, and her special friend, Rose Hess.

Sandra J. Johll

Sandra J. “Bouchie” Johll, age 76, of Dubuque, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, with her family by her side.  To celebrate Sandy’s life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  To honor Sandy’s life, funeral services will be held immediately following visitation at 4:00 p.m., on Sunday at Behr Funeral Home, with Deacon Jim Luksetich officiating.

Sandy was born on November 28, 1944, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Dorothy E. Johll.

Sandy graduated from Cuba City High School and went to work for Flexsteel Industries, before returning to school to become a surgery technician.  Unable to find work locally in her chosen trade, she returned to Flexsteel where she would work from 1969 until 2009, until her well earned retirement.  Sandy was very involved with the Steel Worker’s Union serving as Vice-president and eventually as President.  She was inducted into the Labor Hall of Fame for her many years of service to the Union.  Sandy was shy and reserved and enjoyed the simple things in life.  She was a friend to any animal she came across, and she knew all of the neighborhood pets by name.  Sandy liked watching true crime shows on TV, as well as classic shows from her childhood.  She also looked forward to going out to dinner once a month with her friends.  Sandy enjoyed traveling with her family to any location Stacey had planned.  She loved to just get in her car and see where their adventure would take them, no map required.  Their travels often led them back to their favorite destination, Lake Havasu City, Arizona.  Her family was no doubt the one aspect of her life that brought her the greatest joy.  Sandy especially looked forward to spending time with the grandchildren who affectionately nicknamed her “Bouchie”.  She loved attending their events and just being together in general.  Sandy was a wonderful, kind hearted mom, grandma, sister and friend to all.  She will be greatly missed by everyone whose life she touched throughout the years.

Sandy’s family would like to thank everyone who has helped us these past months including the Principal and staff at Table Mound School and all of our friends and family who have sent their thoughts, prayers and support.  Also a special thank you to Claudia, the Chaplain at Finley Hospital, for her comforting presence when we needed it most.  And last, but certainly not least, Sandy’s best friend, Sharon Frommelt, for all of her kindness and wonderful visits.

Amber L. Cavanaugh

Amber Lynn Cavanaugh, 37 of Dubuque, IA passed suddenly on June 4, 2021.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 14th, 2021, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Entombment will be at a later date in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

She was born October 16, 1983, in Dubuque, Iowa Daughter of Diane Cavanaugh and Frank C. Parsons III.

Amber enjoyed working with the public. She always had a friendly smiling face and got along with those she came in contact with. She accumulated many long-lasting friendships and great customers in the service industry over the years. Her most recent employment being at Ihop and Mason Dixon.

Amber had a deep love of animals, especially dogs. Her hobbies included drawing, listening to music, journaling, makeup, and sewing.

Amber faced many struggles throughout her short life but loving and caring for her children and family were not one of them. When she loved, she loved with everything she had. She enjoyed spending time with all her family and always had to be the life of the party. She will be loved and missed dearly by so many.

Amber is the mother of 4 biological children as well as Bryon Manning who she considered her son. She reserved a special place in her heart for Tom Ruden who she looked to as her dad.

Amber is survived by her four children: Gage Cavanaugh of Mason City, IA, Cearden, Cadence and Jensen Cavanaugh; one granddaughter Isabelle, and another grandchild expected in 2021.  Her mother Diane Cavanaugh, Dubuque, IA; her father Frank C. Parsons, Fort Myers, FL; four sibling’s: Travis Cavanaugh, Morgan Ruden, and Haley Cavanaugh all of Dubuque and step sister, Brittany Parsons of Fort Myers FL. her estranged husband Jeremy Gmur-Cavanaugh; a niece Aiyonna Wilson, 3 nephews, Gunner and Brantley Finzel, and Kashden Carroll-Cavanaugh; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins

Amber is preceded in death by her Maternal grandparents John “Peach” and Rita (Splinter) Cavanaugh; her aunt Julie Unsen, and two uncles Dale Cavanaugh and Ronnie Hess.

Tristan C. G. Dawson

Tristan C. G. Dawson, age 24, of Dubuque, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 4, 2021.  To celebrate Tristan’s life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Burial will be at a later date following cremation in Linwood Cemetery.

Tristan was born on August 22, 1996, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Rebecca Dawson and Raven Hohmann.

Tristan was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, Class of 2014.  He was employed with Panera Bread from 2017-2020, and was excited to be starting a new job with Best Buy.  In his free time Tristan was a hard core gamer.  His friends meant the world to him and whenever they got together there was usually some gaming involved.  Tristan enjoyed watching Anime and LARPing (Live Action Roll Play).  He also liked spending time at home with his beloved dog, Josie, and cat, Kira, relaxing and watching YouTube.  Tristan also liked spending time outside enjoying the beauty of nature and having bonfires with family and friends.  We are truly heartbroken at losing Tristan, and he will be missed more than words can express.

Grace A. Wehrspann

Grace Annette Wehrspann, 85, of Sherrill, died Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at her home. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Friday, June 11, 2021, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road. The Funeral Service for Grace will be 10:30 am Saturday, June 12, 2021, at Sherrill United Church of Christ with Rev. Emily Blue officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque. The service will be live streamed on Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home’s Facebook page and will also be available to view later at www.hskfhcares.com.

Grace was born December 4, 1935, in Dubuque, the daughter of Robert Arthur and Anita Lily Avery Buol. On October 1, 1960, she married Allen “Shorty” Sidney Wehrspann in Westminster Presbyterian Church. He died April 4, 2005.
  
She was a 1953 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School.

Grace worked for Home Instead. Before marrying Allen, she worked at A.Y. McDonald Supply Company and Dubuque Supply Company.

She was a member of Sherrill United Church of Christ, where she played in the bell choir and taught Sunday school. She also taught at the Pioneer Club. She enjoyed scrapbooking, reading, music, NASCAR, and working jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include one son, Terry (Laurie) Wehrspann of Sherrill; two grandsons, Dominick Wehrspann, and Jacob Wehrspann; one brother, Casper John “C.J.” (Leslie) Buol of Oklahoma; and one sister, Judy (Bob) Curler of Asbury and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Mark.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Jeremiah and a special thank you to Lydia Wehrspann for all of your love and care.

Robert L. Mueller

Robert (Bob) L. Mueller, 64, of Dubuque died peacefully at home on Monday, June 7, 2021.  Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m.  The service will be livestreamed on the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Facebook page.  Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Robert was born April 5, 1957 in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Albert and Marjorie (Ege) Mueller.

He will be remembered as a kind, caring, and hardworking man.  As a kid, Bob enjoyed hunting. He would also fall asleep riding on the back of the tractor.  In the summer, he would also go barefoot all day and be able to walk on rocks and cornstalks with no problem.  He was an International tractor fan and was in competition with his brother Rick who was a John Deere fan.

He worked as a farmer, and later as a construction worker.

Robert is survived by three siblings, Milo Mueller of Dubuque, Rick (Marilyn) Mueller of Asbury, and Sharon (Bob) Vance of Clive, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Lisa (Tom) Rubbo, Steven (Courtney) Mueller, Kari (fiancé Alex Cook) Mueller, Nick Vance of London, Jacob (Haley) Vance of West Des Moines, and Stephanie Vance of Waukee.  He is also survived by several great nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Sharon Mueller, Niece and Nephews Katrina, Jason and James Mueller.
