Norma M. Denlinger

Norma M. Denlinger, a long-time Dubuque civic leader, whose no-nonsense manner surrounded a tender heart, died December 19, 2019 with her loving family by her side. She was 91 years old.

Funeral services will be held on January 3, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church with a visitation from 9:00-9:45 a.m. A celebration of Norma’s life will be held on January 4, 2020 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at the Grand River Center River Room, where the family will welcome visitors.

Norma was born in St. Louis, MO on April 19,1928, the only child of Edward J. and Hilda F. (Scheyer) Mulligan. Although Norma was an only child, she had 9 first cousins, on her maternal side, who were like siblings to her. When Norma was two, the family moved to Dubuque, where she attended St. Columbkille’s School from Kindergarten through 12thgrade. She excelled at many things from academics to basketball. She received a scholarship from Clarke University and attended one year. She left university to marry her sweet-heart and best friend, Virgil J. Denlinger. Norma married Virgil on Oct. 15,1949 at Nativity Church in Dubuque. They were married for 54 years until Virgil passed away in 2003.

Her first full-time job was as an assistant to the personnel director at Dubuque Packing Co. Later, Norma and Virgil established Denlinger Insurance Agency and ran it for more than 50 years. The office was inside their home on Clarke Drive for most of those years, where they also built an upstairs apartment for Norma’s parents.

Norma was known as “Mully” to her school chums, most of whom she kept throughout life. She was blessed with a keen intellect, which she willingly shared with family, friends, and the community. She was also born with an unselfish spirit and a desire to help those in need. Those who knew her say she exemplified the finer things of the human spirit — equality, compassion, honesty, and fairness. Norma was a great listener and many sought her wisdom. Her wry sense of humor and playfulness often made folks chuckle and lightened many hearts throughout her life.

Countless organizations and individuals in Dubuque received Norma’s time, talent, insight, and resources. Her assistance ranged from quiet, behind-the-scenes endeavors to leadership of some of the community’s most prominent organizations, including the United Way, Dubuque Racing Association, Boy’s and Girl’s Club, Bridges out of Poverty, Community Foundation, Arboretum, Two by Two, Bell Tower Theater, NICC, NISOM, and many others. Norma was also very generous with her financial resources and many more non-profits and individuals received financial help from her. Preserving the environment and and protecting it for future generations were also very dear to her heart.

Her civic roles never precluded Norma from devoting time to her family, friends, and neighbors. When her children’s Cub Scout dens and Girl Scout troops needed a leader, she volunteered. When neighborhood kids suffered scrapes and more serious injuries, their parents often sought out “Dr. Denlinger”, as she was affectionately known in the neighborhood. When her children’s school, St. Patrick’s, started a baseball team, Norma sewed the uniforms, and kept score. She found time to attend many of her children’s and grandchildren’s athletic games and extracurricular activities, help with homework, and take her grandkids on educational “field trips”. There was also always room at her kitchen table and in her yard for kids needing a place to feel at home. People often asked her how she found time to do so much, her response was simple, “I don’t have any more hours in the day than anyone else, it is simply a matter of how you establish your priorities”.

She also had many interests and talents. Norma was an avid reader, a good musician, playing the piano and violin, dancing, sewing, knitting, and basket weaving. She also loved swimming (especially in the Mississippi),crosswords, traveling, and meeting folks from all backgrounds. She saw many countries throughout her life.

Norma’s motto was: to give is to receive. Her family feels so blessed to have had her in their lives and to have shared her with so many others.

Norma is survived by her four children: James E. (Susan) Denlinger of Dubuque; Lynn M. Denlinger of Anchorage, AK; Thomas A. (Tina) Denlinger of Cuba City, WI.; and William J. (Carol) Denlinger of Coral Springs, FL.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jason (Berta) Denlinger, Julie (Shane) Bakey, Trent and Theo Denlinger, Ava and Aiden Denlinger, Adam Henderson; and three great grandchildren, Kael and Madelyn Bakey, and Emmett Ribeiro Denlinger.

The family would like to thank the daily caregivers that loved and cared for Norma and Hospice of Dubuque.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Virgil J. and Norma M. Denlinger Family Foundation at the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque (CFGD), 700 Locust St., Suite 195, Dubuque, IA, 52001. Norma created the fund as a way to contribute perpetually to the pressing causes in the Dubuque Community.

From 1950 to 1954 John attended Loras Academy in Dubuque, an all-boys military academy.  He played football, basketball and golf and was an honor student in spite of working as a newspaper boy and part-time helper at a downtown office supply store.  He then attended Loras College and played basketball and golf.  The golf team won the State College Championship over 31 other colleges and universities in 1957.  John later received a Master’s Degree from the State College of Iowa, now the University of Northern Iowa.  Birkett graduated from Loras in 1958 and was hired at Don Bosco High School near Waterloo, Iowa as head basketball and baseball coach, as well as athletic director.  Birkett’s basketball teams won 101 and lost 35 games over a seven year tenure, which included four conference championships.  In 1965 he was hired as head basketball coach at Lincoln High School in Stockton, California, where he coached until 1971 with a record of 101 wins and 36 losses, winning three conference championships  and two second-place finishes in six years.  Birkett was named San Joaquin County “Coach of the Year” four times.

Birkett was then hired as freshman coach at the University of the Pacific for the 1971-72 season, attaining a 21-5 record. He was then hired as varsity assistant basketball coach at University of California Santa Barbara from 1972 to 1974.  In 1974 he was named Head Basketball Coach at Northern Arizona University.  Birkett coached the Lumberjacks for four years and was the head of Intramurals and Recreation for most of a fifth year.

John coached 486 total games, winning 70% of them for a 340-146 life-time record.

Birkett left NAU in late 1979 to start his own real estate appraisal company in Flagstaff.   During this time he was active in the Kiwanis Club, serving as President in 1979-1980.  The Kiwanis Club distributed extensive monies to Flagstaff charities and youth groups.

John then relocated to Stockton, California to work for the nation’s fifth largest builder, returning to Flagstaff in 1993 to resume his appraisal business.  The business was successful for the next 25 years, thanks to the people of Flagstaff and Northern Arizona.

John was involved in many charitable and civic organizations.  He ran for County Supervisor in 1996, losing by 78 votes.  He was appointed to the Forest Highlands Foundation Board of Directors and served for approximately four years.  During that time the Foundation contributed over $2,000,000 to Flagstaff and Northern Arizona.  He also served on the Flagstaff Parks and Recreation Commission for 7 years, during which time an $11,000,000 bond issue was approved for restoration and apparatus equipment, benefitting several local parks.

In 2007 Dave Brown and John Birkett established the Flagstaff Sports Foundation to help needy young athletes participate in and enjoy sports activities.  The Foundation has helped over 300 young athletes over the years.  Working with young people has always been an important part of John’s life.

John had a passion for golf, playing many courses in the United States, Mexico and the British Isles.  A fierce competitor, he enjoyed organizing and participating in many golf tournaments with his friends

John and his wife, Jan, celebrated their 40th anniversary this year.  Together they have six children:  Pam Birkett Tschantre (Kevin) of Stanwood, WA, Barbara Birkett Vaughn (Jason) of Kansas City, MO, Janet Birkett Kurth (Jeff) of Ackley, IA, John David Birkett of Lodi, CA, Suzy Tuttle Kartchner (Zane) of Tucson, AZ, and Marc Tuttle (Charlotte) of Stockton, CA.  They also have numerous grandchildren and a respectable and ever-increasing number of great-grandchildren.  John was “Grandpa Buzzard” to his grandchildren, introducing them to the adventures of “secret plans” and was looking forward to doing the same with the next generation.  His children love him for his strength, guidance, great sense of fun and unconditional love.

Dawn was born in Aukland, New Zealand on October 24, 1944. She came to the United States with her mother as a girl and spent her childhood in the Dubuque, IA area.

In 1963, she met and married Robert L. Woodhouse of Epworth, IA. Together, they raised three children: Alicia, Brad, and Rachel. The couple enjoyed golf, travel, bowling, and card club with friends. In her semi-retirement, Dawn became an avid quilter and prioritized mentoring students at Prescott Elementary each year as a way of honoring her grandchildren.

From the age of 17 Dawn worked in publishing and always took great pride in her work and career. More recently she worked in human resources and truly enjoyed making new relationships as well as passing on a lifetime of professional experiences to her younger coworkers. Though she had been semi-retired for many years, working remained central to her until the end.

Traveling to see her four grandchildren remained her top priority. These visits were a source of great strength and reward during her 15 month fight against cancer. Mom fought tenaciously against the disease that took her life and refused to give up until she herself was ready. She never once lost her unique sense of humor.

Mom collected unique rocks wherever she went, bringing them home as memories of her travels. She often held one in her hand during treatment. We invite visitors to bring a rock from their homes with them to share with the family and continue her tradition.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dawn’s name to the Foundation for Dubuque Public Schools to be used for Prescott’s Mentoring Program.

Online condolences may be shared with Dawn’s family at www.tristatecremationcenter.com
