Ruth Ann Durey

We celebrate the life of Ruth Ann Durey. Ruth passed away on November 24, 2020, at the age of 79, at her home wrapped in the love of family, after having suffered a massive stroke on November 13. Ruth is now reunited with her husband, Donald (Sonny) Durey who passed away in 2017, son, Edward Durey, who passed away in 2018, parents, Edward and Pearl Gerstkamp, son-in-law George Frommelt and so many other dear family members.

She is survived by her daughters, Chris McCarron, Cathy Ruden and Candy Frommelt. Ruth had many roles throughout her life, but none brought her greater pleasure than being called grandma and great grandma. Ruth had nine grandchildren, Jessica DuBord, Amber Blum, Corey Ruden, Tyler Ruden, Adam McCarron, Brittany Weber, Ashley Durey, Logan Frommelt, Tyler Frommelt and sixteen great grandchildren.

Although Ruth had only four children of her own, she became “mom” to so many more, including her granddaughter, Brittany, and many foster children who came into Ruth and Sonny’s home. Some stayed the night, some for a short time and some for years. She provided safety, security, compassion and love to all who passed through her home. Ruth taught her children that there is always enough love to share with others.

Ruth was a child advocate. As a parent of a child with disabilities, she was constantly advocating not only for her own son, Ed, but for all individuals with disabilities. She believed that every child with a disability has the right to access and be included in all activities and opportunities, just as a child without disabilities. Her advocacy led her to her work as a paraprofessional with Dubuque Community Schools. She worked with students with disabilities at Franklin, Helen Keller and Eisenhower Schools.

Another “mom” role for Ruth was her involvement within the community. She served on many PTA boards, volunteered for a variety of community events, and served as a Girl Scout leader and a Sunday school teacher. She loved to drop off batches of spinach dip to her special friends at Ed’s apartment.

One of her greatest roles was “dog mom.” Through the years, many dogs were loved and pampered by Ruth. Her present two dogs, Mindy and Huck, were her pride and joy. They will miss their snuggle buddy. Mindy, Huck and her grandpuppies, Ruby and Ellie, were by her side in her final moments, and we are sure that she will be watching over them.

Due to the pandemic, a private family service and burial was held on November 27, 2020 at Dubuque Memorial Gardens Cemetery. According to Ruth’s wishes, the family suggests memorials be given to ARC, Goodwill or Cozy Corner. You may view the service on Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory’s Facebook page.

Vera was born on December 23, 1931, in New Vienna, IA, the daughter of Bernard and Theresa (Wiskus) Neuhaus. She married William H. Mormann on April 25, 1954, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna. Together, they had eleven children: Alan (Pam) of Petersburg, IA, Terry (JoAnn) of Independence, IA, Randy (Carmen) of Petersburg, IA, Robert (Kim) of Omaha, NE, Deb (Garry) Anstoetter of Epworth, IA, William III (Mary) of Farley, IA, Bev (John) Nelson of Navarre, FL, Mary (Gerry) Schlegel of Fort Worth, TX, James (Melinda) of Morton, IL, Carl (Lisa) of Dyersville, IA and Lynn (Kevin) Franzluebbers of Omaha, NE.

She was the proud grandmother of 22 grandchildren and the beaming great grandmother of 26 great-grandchildren.

Vera leaves behind one sister, Germaine (Neuhaus) Foxen and Cousin Mary Lou Schmit; along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband William H. Mormann, her son Alan Mormann, her grandson Patrick Mormann, brothers Alvin (Clara Ann) Neuhaus, Bernard (Delores) Neuhaus and in-laws Richard “Dick” and Mary Arens, Harlan and Julitta Friedman and William Schmitt.

Vera had a quick wit and contagious smile with hugs that engulfed you in her love. She made everyone feel like a friend and was thought of by many as a second mom or special grandma. She was genuine and always made time to chat and share a smile – there was never a story that wasn’t too good to be told again and again. She had a way of opening her home to others, even if it was unexpected, one was always welcomed.

You would know that Vera had a green thumb as her beautiful flowers and plants were showcased inside and out. Throughout her years, Vera donated her blooms to the area greenhouse for homecoming corsages and to the St. Peter & Paul church to adorn the altar of her faith. Keeping to her nature, you’d see her riding her Dixon mower through town to make sure her lawns were manicured to their finest.

Her second home was on the baseball field, supporting her husband as team manager and her boys as they took the field for the Petersburg Baseball team. Vera ran the concessions making roasters of turkey and Maid Rite sandwiches and making sure no one ever left hungry.

Vera had a strong faith and prayed the rosary every day; she always gave great advice that usually ended with the comment to “Pray about it and look for guidance from upstairs and I’ll pray an extra rosary for you”. Vera cherished her family, and they were truly her greatest treasure. Her advice was endless and valued.

Over the years, Vera participated in church groups, prayer groups, school activities and bowling leagues. The continued support of her family was seen by her presence at their events whenever she could. She volunteered to the community lending a helping hand to anyone in need.

Vera will be missed by many; her family has lost a treasure – their rock and matriarch. Her kind, gentle spirit will be a light that continues to shine through her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family extends sincere gratitude to the care and compassion of those that brought a loving touch to their mother; the Stonehill Care facility nurses, care and liturgical staff, and administrator Peggy Stockel. Hospice of Dubuque, Dr. Mark Herman, Dr. Tony Heiar, Dr. Garrett Ridgley, Dr Amy Even and Dr. Tauseef Khan.
