Steven J. Krogmeier

Steven Joseph Krogmeier, 63, passed away peacefully at his home in The Villages Florida, surrounded by family, due to complications from ALS on Thursday, December 12, 2019.

Let me tell you about Steve. He was many things to many people: husband, father, brother, banker, farmer, mentor, teacher, student, joker, business partner, and friend. He lived the American Dream of being his own boss by starting three business and retiring from his full-time position at Dubuque Bank and Trust after his last venture, Valley Pork, LLC, became successful. He never shied away from hard work, knowing that it built character and did all he could to instill that virtue in the people around him. He was one of the founding members of the Dubuque Soccer Alliance, acting as Treasurer for more than 20 years, and could be regularly seen mowing fields at the Dubuque Soccer Complex.

He enjoyed meeting people and hearing their stories. He was infamous for striking up conversation with strangers to figure out what brought them to that spot, on that day, so he could have the pleasure to talk with them.

“What are you reading now?” was a question that could get you into a 20-minute discussion on World War II, baseball pitchers, cars, pigs, Alice Cooper, or any other random assortment of things you had no idea that you wanted to know.

Above all, Steve was joy. He made the best out of any situation and never let the little things bring him down. Our annual family vacations were often filled with go-carts, banter and baseball games. On one particular trip to St. Louis, he begrudgingly sold his Cards/Cubs tickets -when his family was too hot and exhausted from the day to sit through an entire nine-inning game. He watched the game in the hotel room, eating pizza, watching his children play in the pool, with no complaints and a smile on his face.

He was a role model, believed in playing the hand you were dealt and enjoying the game regardless of the outcome. Through his battle with ALS, he kept his sense of humor. Always quick to make a joke and crack a smile. His laughter was contagious, sometimes not getting to the punchline before he, and everyone in the room, were laughing with him.

He took on ALS with a sense of curiosity and turned it into a learning experience. He enjoyed discussing what he was discovering about the disease and the science behind it. He was one of the few people that would describe leg braces as “neat” due to the engineering and understanding of human physiology that went into them. In order to prevent others from suffering from ALS, Steve donated his body to the Mayo Clinic ALS Research of Jacksonville, Florida as follow-up to his participation in multiple stem cell research studies.

Steve, son of Francis “Charlie” and Mary Krogmeier, was born on October 24, 1956 in Fort Madison, Iowa. Steve is survived by his wife, Jane; three children: Michelle of Brooklyn, New York; Bob (Erin Fitzgerald) of West Branch, Iowa; and Curtis of Swisher, Iowa; two brothers: David (Denise) Krogmeier of Fort Madison, Iowa; Ralph (Collen) Krogmeier of Donnellson, Iowa; and five sisters: Linda (Steve) Bantz of Columbia, Missouri; Irene (Gene) Lucas of Bettendorf, Iowa; Phyllis (Kent) Seymour of Liberty, Illinois; Joan (Roger) Moeller of West Point, Iowa; and Julie (John Head) Davis of Frisco, Texas. There is also a plethora of loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Francis and Mary Krogmeier.

The visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 19th at Hoffman Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002.

He will be laid to rest in Fort Madison, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ALS Association of Florida, ALS Association of Iowa, or YMCA / YWCA of Dubuque, Iowa. The family would like to thank the staff at Mayo Clinic for all their work with Steve. Special thanks to Dr. Staff, Karla, Michelle, and our home health aide Mari. We are eternally grateful for the care you have given.

Virginia L. Potts

Virginia L. Potts, 82, of Dubuque died Thursday, December 12, 2019.  Visitation will be from 3 to 7 pm Monday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road where there will be a parish wake service at 7 pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Resurrection.   Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Virginia was born May 24, 1937 in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Cletus and Ruth (Heaton) Grue.  She graduated from the Visitation Academy.

On June 15, 1957 she married Cyril Cy” Potts at St. Raphael Cathedral.  Virginia called Cy the love of her life, and was deeply saddened when he preceded her in death in 2012.  From that union came a family that became the most important role for Virginia—that of mother and grandmother.

Virginias greatest passions in life were her children and grandchildren.  She loved spending time with them, hearing of their adventures, watching their sporting events, doling out advice, and simply adoring them.  She made a tremendous impact on them all and considered those roles her greatest accomplishments.

Virginia was a huge sports fan, most times proving more knowledgeable of the games than most.  She loved to debate anything sports and typically had a good ribbing going via text with her grandchildren about some game or team.   Oftentimes she could be found watching golf, tennis, football, basketball and baseball on TV.

Virginia also loved going out to eat with family and friends, the morning crossword with coffee, ipad slots, winning at Euchre, and spending time with her wonderful neighbors who were more like family to her. She had an incredible sense of humor and an infectious smile that will be missed dearly.

Virginia had a deep faith that guided her through life and strengthened as she grew older.  It is this faith that allowed her to look forward to the day she went home and was reunited with Cy, also realizing those left behind would grieve her absence.  Her wish would be that we celebrate her life and derive comfort from the many sweet memories we have with her.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Cy and Virginia’s close family friend Ron Kelley, who continued his friendship and support after Cys passing, to Kay Potts, Virginia’s cohort in lunch outings and bible studies, and to the Gabriel Drive families who held a special place in her heart.  All proved to be of invaluable comfort and joy to Virginia.

Steven Smelcer

Steven “Steve” Smelcer passed away at Mercy Hospital on December 11, 2019, surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born on February 19, 1961, in La Grange, IL, to Jane & Glen Smelcer. He was an older brother to Michele and Suzanne. His family moved from Illinois to Dubuque, IA in the early 1970s. He most recently resided with his mom Jane and stepfather Jon McPhail. Nancy was the love of his life and best friend for many years.

Steve was a gentle soul with a kind heart. He was a caring and loving son, brother and friend who we made many happy memories with. He always watched out for us. His faith was very meaningful to him.

Steve was a talented artist who could draw anything. He enjoyed creating art in all mediums. In his younger years, he took pride in crafting elaborate card houses and radiant suncatchers that wow’d everyone. The artistic use of light and bold color fascinated him and informed his own projects.

Growing up, he was always a good sport with his younger sisters and their friends. He made magical childhood experiences for them often using just his imagination and creativity.

He loved waterfalls and finding beauty in nature. Parks across the country and the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens were his happy places.

One of many cherished memories happened during a family vacation to Yosemite National Park. He and sister Suz rode together on a jet ski all around the most breathtaking pine-lined lake, laughing, reveling in adventure and soaking up the majesty of their surroundings.

Steve will be deeply missed and never forgotten. He is now our guardian angel and lives on in our hearts.

We find comfort that his mind will finally be at peace.

Through organ donation, Steve will be saving several lives in the Tri-State area.

A private service was held for family. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Mercy Hospital and the Iowa Donor Network for their exceptional care. Thank you to Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home for thoughtfully handling cremation services.
A memorial has been established in Steven’s names, please send memorials to the family directly.

Hebrews 13:5: For God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.”
