Hugh G. Bowman

Hugh G. Bowman, 89, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died on November 14, 2020 at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa. Cause of death was COVID-19 Pneumonia. A private funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. The service will be streamed on the First Lutheran Church Facebook page. Future Plans to celebrate his life will take place after Covid-19 subsides.

Hugh was born on April 14, 1931 in Maquoketa, Iowa, the son of Francis and Florence (Goetz) Bowman. Hugh graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952-1954.

Hugh married Mary Lee Whitmore on May 4, 1952. Mary died of cancer on March 22, 2003, after 50 years of marriage.

Hugh’s business career started in 1959 when Dale Koon offered him a partnership in what became Koon & Bowman Standard and Robo-Wash. The station partnership continued until 1989 when Dale retired and sold his share to Hugh’s son, Bill. Hugh continued to work full-time at Bowman Oil Co. until his retirement at the age of 80, always fearing that once a man retires, his “body just starts falling apart and you die.”

After the loss of Mary, Hugh lived independently until the fall of 2019, when he moved to the Clover Ridge Care Center. He was fortunate to have several loving friends and companions in his retirement.

Hugh was a 70-year member of First Lutheran Church.

Hugh is survived by five sons and daughters-in- law: Michael and Deborah; Robert and Joanie; William and Barbara; Tod and Renee; and Kevin and Mary. His surviving grandchildren are Rebecca(Ondrej) Stonawski; Elizabeth(Cameron) Feist; Amanda(Simon) Porter; Kate (Michael) Meinecke, Jacob Bowman; Ara J. (Kristin) Bowman; Adam (Kristin) Bowman, Beau Bowman, Levi Bowman, Adeline Bowman, Lucas Bowman and Jack Bowman. He is survived by 14 great grandchildren, with one on deck and likely many more down the road. Hugh is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law Lois and Max Widner, and their family; Mary’s sisters, Erma “Corky”Bruhn, Betty Roster, Karen Opala, Rena (Archie) McGee and Denyce (Steve) Weimers; Mary’s brothers Richard (Sherrill) Whitmore and Steve Whitmore; and Mary’s brothers-in-law Bill McDonald, and Lyle Adrian.

Hugh was predeceased by his parents, his brother Don Bowman, sisters-in-law Kathy Adrian, Judy Cox, Joan McDonald, Donna Whitmore and Betty Whitmore and brothers-in-law Dwain “Curley” Bruhn, Jack Roster, Dennis Cox, Edward Whitmore, Gary Whitmore, and William Whitmore.

Although work always came first for Hugh, he learned to enjoy family sporting events, euchre games, the Cubs and touring with his 1951 Chevy.

In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund in the name of Hugh and Mary Bowman will be established.

Charles J. Lee

Charles John “Chuck” Lee, 80, of Dubuque, passed away Friday, November 13, 2020, at Prairie Ridge of Galena.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, and will be announced. Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd. is entrusted with arrangements.

Charles was born April 26, 1940 in Iowa City, IA, the son of Charles Henry and Genevieve (Ney) Lee. He married Virginia Burns on September 22, 1962 at 1st Presbyterian Church in Dubuque. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2000. Later in life, he married Jill Shanahan, and she preceded him in death on October 12, 2019.
He served his country with the U.S. Army. Chuck was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works for many years.

He was a man of deep faith, and he served as a deacon and elder on church session at 1st Presbyterian for many years. Chuck had a friendly personality, and was known to make friends wherever he went. He was an avid fan of the Cubs and the Bears, and loved John Wayne and Abbot & Costello. His sweet tooth was legendary, and he had a nickname for everyone. Chuck was a loving father who was always there for his kids, and enjoyed spoiling them. He was a bus driver for East Dubuque, which his kids thought was pretty great!

Later, he enjoyed being a grandpa, and had a special love for babies. He loved music and he would sing old songs and have a dance to go along with it. It always made people smile and laugh, especially his grandkids

Chuck is survived by five daughters, Lori (Steve) Burnes of Dubuque, Lisa (Jeff) Fuehrer of WI, Lynn (Mike) Sutter of Dubuque, Amy Lee of TN, and Amber (Ellis) Scruggs of TN; his grandchildren, Amanda (Adam) Hefel, Erik, Kaitlyn, and Alexander Burnes, Grace and Grant Fuehrer, Caden and Max Sutter, Meghan (fiance Eric) and Jordan Timmerman, Nick, Ashleigh, Zach, and Keeghan Bergman, Isaiah, Bailey, and Kaden Fensterman, and Elijah and Tyler Scruggs; his great-grandchildren, Colin and Clayton Hefel, Karleigh, A.J., and Jack Burnes, and Elias and Matthew Huegerich; and Jill’s children, Chris (Tanya) Shanahan and Nick (Andrea) Shanahan and their daughter Norah, all of Cedar Rapids.

In addition to his first and second wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Lois Bergman; his grandson Jaden Scruggs, and his siblings, Anita, Roberta, Bobby, and Randy.

Sister Lucilla Oberbroeckling

Sister Lucilla Oberbroeckling, OSF, Clare House, Dubuque, Iowa passed away at 9:45 p.m., Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Clare House. A private Celebration of Life and Rite of Final Commendation will be held at Clare House Chapel, Mount St. Francis Center at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Sister Lucilla was born January 20, 1925 in Epworth, IA, daughter of William and Catherine (Pottebaum) Oberbroeckling.

Entered the Sisters of St. Francis August 25, 1943 and made final profession of vows August 12, 1951.  Sister attended Epworth Public School for both her elementary and high school education. Sister Lucilla’s ministry took her to Immaculate Conception Academy, Dubuque; St. Joseph’s in Rickardsville, IA; Xavier Hospital, Dubuque, IA; Holy Family Hall and Mount St. Francis, Dubuque, IA; and Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, IA.  In 1990 Lucilla moved to Mount St. Francis and in 2010 retired to Holy Family Hall and to Clare House in 2011.

Sister is survived by her sisters, Rosemary Noonan and Virginia Pfab; her sister-in-laws Carol Oberbroeckling and Janet Oberbroeckling; her nieces, nephews, and her Franciscan sisters.

Sister was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Marcella and Verna Oberbroeckling; her brothers, William Jr. Oberbroeckling and Edward Oberbroeckling; and in laws, Harlan Noonan, Rita Oberbroeckling, and Leo Pfab.

Memorials may be given to the Sisters of St. Francis, Dubuque, IA.

Judith Perrone

Judith “Judee” Perrone, 73, of Asbury, Iowa, died Monday, Nov. 16, surrounded by those she loved most following a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Judee was born on February 19, 1947 in Chicago, Ill., to Edward and Rebecca Mielas. She attended Kelvyn Park High School in Chicago and married her high school sweetheart, Bernie Perrone, on April 8, 1967.

Professionally, Judee began working as a legal secretary immediately following high school and her career took her to a position as legal secretary for Crate & Barrel Corporation.

She loved home decorating, and was always known to have a catalog-worthy design sense and the perfect kitchen tool for any situation.

Judee believed that when plates were full, hearts were overflowing. Her signature dishes were always made with love and sought-after for family gatherings. She was the ultimate party planner.

After moving to Asbury, Iowa, seven years ago, Judee got a part-time job at PierOne – and then came home with many decor items purchased with her employee discount!

Judee adored her family, especially her grandchildren who always knew that “what happens at Nanna’s house stays at Nanna’s house.”

Left to honor her memory are her husband Bernie; son Jeff (Michelle) Perrone, of Crystal Lake, Ill.; daughter, Amanda (Michael) Cyze of Peosta, Iowa; grandchildren Delaney, Dylann, Zach and Teagan Perrone, and Lauren, Caitlyn and Benjamin Cyze.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter Ryan Grace Perrone.

Terry W. Fangman

Terry William Fangman, 61, of Dubuque passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at Crestridge Care Center in Maquoketa, IA. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 20, 2020 at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. Dubuque. A Catholic funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Father Steve Garner officiating. Burial will follow in Dubuque Memorial Gardens.

Terry was born on July 16, 1959 in Dubuque, the son of Roger and Mary (Duehr) Fangman. He was a member of Holy Ghost Parish. Terry enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and Nascar. He always treasured his time spent with family.

Terry is survived by his mother, Mary Fangman, his sister, Debbie (Terry) Tomkins; niece, Nicole (Joe) Konrardy, nephew, Nate (Hailey Runde) Tomkins, a great niece, Scarlett Tomkins and cannot forget his dog Buddy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roger Fangman and a brother Robert “Bob” Fangman.

Gerald A. Miller

Gerald A. “Jerry” Miller, 71, of Dubuque, formally of Dyersville, IA passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Dubuque Specialty Care due to a battle with cancer and Covid-19. A Catholic funeral service with Deacon John Stierman officiating will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery with entombment to follow. A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on a later date. The Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. Dubuque is assisting the family.

Jerry was born on June 12, 1949 in Dyersville, IA the son of John and Henrietta “Kay” (Barker) Miller. He graduated from Western Dubuque High School, Class of 1968.

Jerry worked various jobs before his retirement. He enjoyed bingo, putting puzzles together, listening to country music and doing word seek and Sudoku puzzles.

He is survived by his sister, Anna Mae Elliott, of Dubuque; brothers, Charles (Deb) Miller, of Osceola, IA and Ralph Miller, of Cedar Rapids, IA along with many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bernard and John in infancy; sister, Elizabeth “Betsy” Miller and a brother-in-law, Lyle Elliott, Sr.

Glenda F. Schroder

Glenda F. Schroder, 79, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, November 14, 2020, at her home surrounded by her family.

A public visitation will be held from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. on Thursday, November 19, 2020, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. A private funeral will be held and will be streamed at https://www.facebook.com/CarsonAndSon/live/. Burial will be at Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.
Masks and social distancing will be required due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Glenda Faye Duncan was born on February 26, 1941 in Springfield, Tennessee to Ira Franklin and Hallie Mae (Wilburn) Duncan. She was a 1959 graduate of Roll High School in Roll, Indiana. She married Ivan Clarence Schroder on October 16, 1960 in Hartford City, Indiana. Five children were born to this union, Lisa, Mark, Sonya, Dan and James.

Glenda had first worked for 3M and Blackford County Hospital while living in Hartford City, Indiana until 1960. She then worked at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton, Iowa, and lastly she and her husband had owned and operated IGS Office Supply in Maquoketa until 2011.

Glenda was a member of the Apostolic Gospel Tabernacle Church in Maquoketa where she served as church secretary until 2015. For 28 years she worked alongside her husband who was the Pastor until 2011. She also was involved with Sunday School Camps for many years with United Pentecostal International.

Glenda enjoyed spending time with family, gardening and flowers, birdwatching, and being actively involved with her church.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Rev. Ivan Schroder of Maquoketa, IA; children, Lisa (Kevin) Lex of Hartford City, IN, Mark (Janice) Schroder of Galloway, OH, Sonya (Jim) Jones of Maquoketa, IA, Dan (Jennifer) Schroder of Huntington, IN, and James (Annie) Schroder of Tipton, IA; 17 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Phyllis (Alvin) Maxwell of Cadiz, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers George and Ronald Duncan, sister Brenda Mitchell, and a grandson Lucas Schroder.

Sister Betty Bowen, BVM, (Florence Therese)

Sister Betty Bowen, BVM, (Florence Therese), 80, of 1130 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, at Caritas Center.

Sharing of Memories via Zoom will be from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020. A virtual visitation will be held from 10:30 – 10:45 a.m., followed immediately by the funeral service. Burial is in the Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Sister Betty ministered as a nurse at Mercy Medical Center and at the Marian Hall Infirmary in Dubuque, Iowa. She served as a nurse in Chicago; Skokie, Ill.; and Evanston, Ill., where she also worked as a parish ministerial staff member.

She was born on July 31, 1940, in Fort Collins, Colo., to Ralph and Florence (Pfeifer) Bowen. She entered the BVM congregation on Aug, 2, 1958, from St. Joseph Parish, Fort Collins, Colo. She professed first vows on Feb. 2, 1961, and final vows on July 16, 1966.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by a brother Jim (Lucille) Bowen, Fort Collins, Colo.; a sister Terri (Joe) Simpson, Little York, Ill.; a niece; nephews; and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 62 years

David R. Phillips

David R. “Red” Phillips, 72, of Zwingle, Iowa, passed away on Thursday afternoon, November 12, 2020, MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa, from complications of CoVid 19 Pneumonia.

Plans to celebrate his life will take place after CoVid 19 subsides. Cremation rites have been accorded and burial will be at a later date at St. Lawrence Cemetery, Otter Creek, Iowa. The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

David Robert Phillips was born on August 24, 1948 in Dubuque, Iowa to David Anthony and Genevieve Loretta (Kennedy) Phillips. He was a 1966 graduate of Maquoketa High School and had served his country in the Army National Guard. He married Karen Sue Richmann on September 18, 1976 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Otter Creek, Iowa. Two daughters were born from this union, Jennifer and Rachel.

“Red” was a lifelong self-employed farmer who was born and raised and lived on the family farm in Otter Creek.

He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Otter Creek, LaMotte Knights of Columbus, Cascade American Legion Post #239, and had served as an Otter Creek Township Trustee for many years.

“Red” enjoyed league bowling, cutting & splitting wood, fishing, and hunting. He will regret missing deer and coyote hunting this season. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved a social gathering and “never met a stranger”.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Karen Sue Phillips of Zwingle, IA; daughters, Jennifer (Mike) Jones of Maquoketa, IA, and Rachel (Matt) Kingree of Brentwood, TN; 3 grandchildren, Gabriella, Grace, and Isabella; a sister, Mary (Seiji) Yoshioka of Ventura, CA; a brother, John (Karen Ann) Phillips of Rock Island, IL; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Jane (Sam) Schepers of Otter Creek, IA, Kay Myatt of Lost Nation, IA, and Allen (Pam) Richmann of Lost Nation, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Robert “Bob” Phillips.

Lorraine E. Tegeler

Lorraine E. Tegeler, 94, of Dubuque, died Saturday, November 14, at Luther Manor, of COVID-19.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 19, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2025 Jackson St., with Reverend Jonathan Crawford officiating. Services will be live-streamed on the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home Facebook page. Masks and social distancing are required. Lorraine was born April 25, 1926 in Dubuque, the daughter of William and Christina (Knockel) Papenthien. She married Leo Tegeler on May 27, 1950 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Dubuque. He preceded her in death on January 31, 2013.

Lorraine was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church since 1926, and she had a very strong faith in God. Over the years, she was employed at Farley & Loetscher, A.Y. McDonald, and Auto Parts Supply.

Lorraine was devoted to her family, and was an excellent homemaker who loved to cook and can. Lorraine loved to go to the casino anytime she had a chance.  If she was having a winning streak it was not uncommon to hear the words “hot dog” come barreling out of her mouth. She was always there to effortlessly make everyone laugh with her hilarious one-liners.

Lorraine is survived by her children, James Tegeler, Jill (fiancé Terry Ruff) Fondell, and Jodi (Tommy McDermott) Lukens, all of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Nichole (Fondell) (Jeremy) Hall, Zach (Meghan) Lukens, Ally Lukens, and Brady Tegeler; two great grandsons, Carter and Leo Hall; and a sister in law, Ethel McCready.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Ed and Bob Papenthien; two sisters, Arlita Redmond and Ruth Papenthien; and her in-laws, Mildred Conzett, Joe Tegeler, Clara Wall, Catherine Tegeler, and Ralph Tegeler.

Shirley A. Hosch

Shirley Ann Hosch, 84, of Cascade, Iowa passed away Friday, November 13, 2020 at MercyOne Dubuque. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Garryowen. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the church with Rev. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. Dubuque is assisting the family.

Shirley was born and raised with her brother William “Billy” Walsh in Waukon, Iowa. She moved to Dubuque, IA with her lifelong friend, Anita Welch, shortly after graduating from St. Patrick’s High School in 1955. They lived at Mary of the Angels, went to dances and stayed until closing time so they would have a ride home from the bartender. She worked as a secretary for Black Hawk and the Gas Company while she lived the single life with her friends.

She met Wilfried “Willie” Hosch through friends and their first date was at a dance in Dubuque. Dances, picnics, friends and laughs led to a marriage that lasted 53 years before Willie’s passing in 2015. They moved from Dubuque to the McCarthy Family Farm West of Garryowen, Iowa in 1965. In 1970 they moved North of Bernard and settled in for the next 45 years.

Friends, family, bowling, Bernard Picnics, Fireman’s Picnics and the Garryowen Rosary Society filled mom’s time and days while raising Roger and Kellie. She was a caregiver to her family, elderly friends and children in the Bernard area through the years. She then spent 20 years as church secretary before her retirement in 2009. The most important roll mom played was making her homemade bread and strawberry jam for every family gathering.

Shirley greeted everyone with a smile and could talk your ear off for hours. There is an empty space in her children’s hearts, yet happiness knowing she has “Gone Home” to be with our dad.

She was a member of the Bernard Commercial Club, Garryowen Rosary Society and several bowling leagues through the years.

Shirley is survived by her children, Roger (Cheryl) Hosch and Kellie Hosch; grandchildren, Amanda (Alex) Nicholsen and Tyler and Jacob Hosch; grandpups, Champ, Wyatt and Edina Monsoon “Eddie”; siblings, William “Bill” and Doris Walsh; in-laws, Vonda Hosch and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Willie; in-laws, Loras (Vig) Hosch, Donald (Rozella) Hosch, and Mary (Dick) Prior.

Charles N. Nehl

On Thursday, November 12, 2020, Charles “Charlie” Nicholas Nehl, husband, father, son, brother and uncle died in Cedar Rapids, IA, suddenly from COVID-19 at the age of 38.

Charlie was born on August 9, 1982, sharing a birthday with his mother. He graduated from Monticello High School in 2000 and Kirkwood Community College receiving a degree in Computer Programming. He worked in several settings as a computer programmer but most recently worked for LimoLink in Cedar Rapids.

In 2015, Charlie met Rhiannon Oakes, they became fast friends, and quickly fell in love. They were married on November 12, 2016. They shared a love for music, spending time with their children, attending Devon Townsend Project shows, and being able to just sit comfortably at home, enjoying each other’s company. Their family was their world.

Charlie loved computers from an early age tying up modems overnight in the days of dial-up. This brought him to a group of lifelong friends who spent hours together at LAN parties in his parents’ basement – commandeering a pool table to set up their computers. Charlie also loved video, board and card games — even achieving the esteemed title of State Champion for Magic: the Gathering. But not all of Charlie’s hobbies were in front of a computer. He was born a Cubs’ fan, never missing a game and was able to rattle off every baseball statistic you could hope to know off the top of his head. He loved playing sand volleyball and had been a part of a league at Volley’s for years. He even painted murals on some of their buildings. You may have seen him at the Cedar Rapids Farmer’s Market at his booth, “Beyond Sprays,” engaging in a joy he found later in life, spray painting everything from galaxies to forests. He was never far away from a Diet Dew, his headphones blasting “everything from metal to musicals,” and was definitely, always seen in a shirt without sleeves.

While Charlie was a man of few words, all who knew him knew that he was a man with a huge heart and a love for folks from all walks of life. He gave the best hugs. Those that knew him were richly blessed, and he will be profoundly missed.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Michele Nehl, aunts, Mary Rose Timmerman & Marsha Schroeder, grandparents, Wallace and Rose Nehl and Henry and Margaret Timmerman. Charlie is survived by his wife, best friend, and partner, Rhiannon Nehl; deeply beloved children, Kaden Nehl from his first marriage to Brandi Hoff, and Emma Mochal and Myles Nehl from his marriage to Rhiannon and their pack of four-legged critters; father Thomas Nehl and his wife Stacy; overbearing (but loved) sisters, Carissa (Brian) Gehl and Rachel Nehl; his stepsisters, Khloe and Kait; his in-laws, Delancey and Lori Hahn, and T.J. and Connie Oakes, his sister-in-laws Renae (Gary) Janecek and Genevieve Oakes, brother-in-law, Henry Hahn, nephews, Owen and Oliver Gehl, Kenny & Sammy Marley, and Elijah Janecek; godparents, Joyce Kramer and Joseph Schroeder; a very large, rather rambunctious extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins; and friends too numerous to count.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a private viewing will be held at Kramer Funeral home on November 27 by invitation. A private service for immediate family will be held on November 28 and officiated by Fr. Paul Baldwin.  Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Those attending the viewing or internment must practice social distancing and wear a mask. Please do not attend if you are feeling ill in any manner. We plan to hold a large celebration of Charlie’s life when it is safe to gather again in large groups.

John R. Kass Jr.

John R. “Rick” Kass Jr., 72, of Dubuque, died Saturday, November 14, 2020, at Luther Manor in Dubuque.

John was born June 29, 1948, in Dubuque, the son of John H. and Phyllis Ryan Kass. He attended and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1968.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from January 28, 1969 until September 1, 1970.  On May 26, 1973, he married Pamela R. Kohnen at Summit Congregational Church in Dubuque.

He was employed at Barnstead Thermolyhne in the shipping department for 37 years.

He was a member of Summit Congregation Church and a booster member for the Dubuque Boy’s Club.   He also attended Cozy Corner. John enjoyed doing work for others, fishing, hunting, playing Euchre and Cribbage, taking casino trips with his friends and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Pam of Dubuque; daughter, Karen (Mike Smith) Kass of Dubuque; son, Jeffrey (Jenny) Kass of Altoona; daughter, Julie (Josh Orr) Kass of Dubuque; grandchildren, Nathan and Shelby Selken, Morgan Kass, Laney and Riley Kass, Hudson and Sierrah Orr; two great-granddaughters, Zariah and Zalaya Selken; step-mother, Kay Kass of Dubuque; two brothers, Joseph and Robert Kass of Texas; eight sisters, Linda Koch of Dubuque, Jane (Jim) Weber of Farley, Mary Kass of Dubuque, Carol (Bob) Yeske of LaCrosse, WI, Sarah Kay of Texas, Sheri Jo (Bill) Vondran of Dubuque, Kelean (Aaron) Williams of East Dubuque, IL, Angela Duehr of Dubuque and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Averey Selken; a brother-in-law, Mike Koch; sister and brother-in-law, Sue (Lyle) Upmann; sister-in-law, Patricia Chaloupka; sister-in-law, Nancy Sanders; grandparents-in-law, Carl (Mildred) Licht and grand puppy, Jasmine.

Gary R. Bakey

Gary R. Bakey, 73, of Bellevue, passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.  A memorial visitation will be 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Friday, November 20, 2020 at Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue.  Family Graveside Services will be Saturday, November 21, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Bellevue.

Gary was born November 7, 1947 in Dubuque, the son of Robert and Agnes (Theisen) Bakey.  He graduated from Carpentersville High School in 1967.  Gary served as a Police Officer for 22 years in Carpentersville, he then helped farm the last 18 years west of Bellevue.  He married Debra Lindabauer on September 7, 1996 in Dundee, IL.  Gary loved farming, animals, gardening, and fishing with his family.  He took the most joy in being with his family and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him

Survivors include his wife, Debra; children, Eric, Steven (Holly), Jacob, Danny, and Deanna Bakey; grandchildren, Andrew, Ashley, Jack, and Olivia.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Kathy  Rodriquez.

Dr. Frederick G. Asmussen

Dr. Frederick G. (“Doc”) Asmussen, M.D., 80, of Dubuque, died November 12, 2020, of an autoimmune disease. He died at home, surrounded by his family.

Doc was born on June 25, 1940, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Frederick C. and Karolina (Gerhardt) Asmussen. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1961 and earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1964.

Doc served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1968, where he was the Director of Aerospace Medicine and a flight surgeon. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Iowa City where he finished his residency in 1971. He made Dubuque his home when he started working as an OB/GYN at Medical Associates, practicing alongside Dr. Clark Stevens. After 31 years of practice, he retired in 2002.

Doc was a member of the Iowa Medical Society, Dubuque County Medical Society, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, the Izaak Walton League, and the Dubuque Shooting Society’s 660 Club. He was also a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge #125.

Doc had many life-long friends. He was a favorite among his patients and nurses, always remembering to thank them at the end of the day. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, snowmobiling, a good party, and a strong Manhattan. This list could go on, but strict instructions were given not to “fluff if up.” However, in the last years of his life, his most favorite and proudest role was Papa.

Doc is survived by his wife of 31 years, Ellen, and four daughters, Alana Asmussen of San Diego, California; Kara Asmussen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Jenny (Nick) Weiss of Dubuque, Iowa; and Katie Harris of Dubuque, Iowa; and his grandchildren, Harrison and Harper. He is also survived by a nephew Gary Allen (Karen) Eggert and two nieces, Caroline Eggert and Diane (Bill) Falshaw.

He was preceded in death by a baby daughter at birth, his parents, and his sister Carol-Mae Eggert.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Dubuque Mercy Health Foundation Endowment Fund or the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.
