Joanne G. Mauer

Joanne G. Mauer, age 84, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on December 13, 2024, at Dubuque Specialty Care.  To honor Joanne’s life, a memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at the Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Chapel, 2736 Windsor Avenue in Dubuque, with the Very Rev. Dennis J. Quint officiating.  Burial will be in the Linwood Cemetery.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Joanne’s family.

Joanne was born on December 4, 1940, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Arty and Mary (Riley) Mootz.  She was undeniably the matriarch of Camp Mauer where her and her husband, Tim, graciously opened the doors of their home to countless young men and women over the years who simply needed a loving home and stable parental figures in their lives.  Her love and devotion for others was continually on display and ultimately played a significant role in so many kids coming of age.  Her skills in the kitchen were second to none and no doubt there are many folks out there who today can still conjure in their minds the aroma of her warm lasagna coming out of the oven, her dumplings rising to perfection, and her panzerotti’s making their way to the plates only waiting to be served.

Joanne was also one of the first Hockey Mom’s for the Dubuque Fighting Saints.  Many young players had a comfortable home to live, eat and sleep in when Joanne was at the helm.  When Joanne wasn’t rescuing the kiddos in the community around her, you could usually find her assisting Jim Wand with his hypnotist empire.  She was the magic behind the curtain for many years and always enjoyed all of the fun and excitement that came along with her career there.  Joanne lived a full life indeed and did her best to make the world around her a better place wherever she could.  We will miss her generous heart and can thankfully find peace that she and Tim are now reunited for eternity after only a few months apart.  Thank you, Joanne for all of the love and kindness you shared throughout your 84 years among us and may the Lord grant you peace within His loving and grace-filled arms until we all meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Joanne include,

her children,

(Hesseling) Meisenburg.  She was gifted with a kind and outgoing spirit which she faithfully shared with all those around her throughout her life.  Linda never passed up an opportunity to sit around the euchre table and show off her skills and talent to anyone willing to take up the challenge.  She savored the competition and was always grateful when a few hands made their way into her day.  Linda was a social butterfly through and through and not a day went by when she wasn’t looking for a way to spread her wings a bit if possible.  A good conversation, a little give and take, or maybe just catching up on the events of the day in someone’s life was always time well spent in Linda’s heart and mind.  But, for those who knew her best it was undeniable that spending time with the grandkids was where her greatest joy could be found.  Linda loved them with all of her being and treasured every hour she could with them by her side.  It’s difficult to imagine life moving forward without Linda’s love and light shining among us, but we know that her health battles over these last 4 years were simply not going to relent even as she battled courageously till the very end.  Thank you, Linda, for keeping your eye on the prize and never giving up despite the challenges which came your way.  May we all carry the best parts of your legacy on in our own lives as a testimony to your strength and may the Lord grant you peace now as we all wait patiently for our eternal reunion to arrive in time.

Thomas G. Hitzler

Thomas G. “Tom” Hitzler, age 73, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey suddenly on Monday, December 9, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City while surrounded by his loving family.  To honor Tom’s life, a memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 2921 Central Avenue in Dubuque, with Rev. Steve Garner officiating.  Family and friends are invited to join in fellowship for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Tom’s family.

Tom was born on April 25, 1951, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Anthony J. “Tony” and Esther (Peters) Hitzler.  Sadly, his mother, Esther, was called home much too early when the kids were young and Tony was blessed to find love again with Barbara Wasser, who loved and nurtured the children just as her own.   Tom always loved the color green and getting to spend over 30 years at John Deere investing his time and talents was a perfect fit.  He took great pride in his work and enjoyed the last 20 years of his retirement where he treasured the fruits of his labors.

Tom was a quiet and reserved man at his core, but to his larger-than-life heart was continually on display.  His love for his fellow man and animals ran deep and you would never find a gentler soul than Tom.  He was also an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and Indianapolis Colts; rarely missing a game when his teams took the field.  We are going to miss Tom’s bright light walking among us moving forward, but do pray that he is now free from his earthly health battles and residing in eternal perfection.  Thank you, Tom, for always being true to yourself and those around you and may the love and peace of the Lord keep you safe in His loving arms until we all meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Tom include,

his siblings,
Anthony M. “Tony” (Sylvia) Hitzler, Dubuque, IA,

In lieu of flowers, a Thomas G. Hitzler memorial fund has been established.
