Wallace A. Pensel
Wallace Adam “Wally” Pensel, 83, of East Dubuque, Illinois, danced his way to heaven on Tuesday, July 16, 2019. Wally was born March 26, 1936, he was the oldest of three children to Edgar and Marie (Handke) Pensel. After graduating from Colesburg High School in 1953, he served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956 and was stationed in Germany.
On June 20,1959 he married Janet Angell. She preceded him in death in 1982. Later in life, he met Faye Warne. They married and started a new venture on February 14, 2008.
Wally worked at John Deere Dubuque Works, first on the line, then as an inspector, retiring in 1988. After retirement, he helped his nephew work on the farm.
He was an avid classic car collector and enthusiast, belonging to the Cedar Rapids Car Club for 20 years and Gary’s Graffitti Cruisers for 30 years, participating in hundreds of shows and cruises. He enjoyed going dancing and kicking up his heels, as well as taking in the sites while travelling.
He and Faye also loved tending to their beautiful farmette in Livingston, WI where they could sit and look at the stars while overlooking the lake from the light house, or be found puttering around on his tractors or 4-wheeler.
Family was important to Wally, he loved visiting with all of his nieces, nephews, children, step-children, and he loved his grandchildren greatly. Whenever they would give him a hug, he’d ask them to “give me a big squeeze”. Then add, “make it a little tighter”.
Faith was also important to Wally, and he was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he spent many years as a trustee.
Wally was even a movie star! He was an extra in the filming of the movie “Field of Dreams”.
A common theme when Wally’s name is brought up, is hearing about his kind, giving, and patient demeanor along with being the first to crack a joke and enjoy a good laugh. Everyone that knew him truly was blessed for having him in their life.
Wally is survived by his wife, Faye (Warne) Pensel of East Dubuque; two sons, Kenneth W. Pensel of Columbus Junction and Gary L. (Rita) Pensel of Dubuque; three stepsons, Eldon L. He was an avid golfer, playing his last round at 88 years of age. He was a brilliant gardener and took great pride in his flowerbeds and yard. He loved flowers and was at one time a Midwestern tester for Jackson Perkins roses. He was also an avid water skier, taking his last run at 80 years old. He spent countless hours on the Mississippi teaching his children, and hundreds of others who wanted to learn, how to water ski behind his yellow boat. He enjoyed watching Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes games with Dolores. He had a love of people and was friendly to everyone he met, including strangers. He loved to talk and listen which made him a great friend, brother and father figure to all he encountered. His gentle spirit, laugh and smile were infectious.
Above all, Paul loved his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Dolores; two sons, Mark (Kathy) Schiffman, of Carmel, IN and Dr. Eric (Karen Kloser) Schiffman, of St. Paul, MN; one daughter, Ann (Jim) Ruble, of Casper, WY; six grandchildren, Elise (Zach Shacter) Schiffman, Julia Schiffman, Adam Schiffman, Paul Schiffman, Jimmy Ruble, and Jacob Ruble; one brother, Harold (Teresa) Schiffman, of Tennyson, WI; two sisters, Vera (Gerry) Kruser, of Kieler, WI, and Sharon (Jack) Pitzen, of Dickeyville, WI; one brother-in-law, Terry Bode, of Kieler, WI; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Chapman, of East Dubuque, IL, and Rosemary (Fred) Wendl of Silvis, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Bert, and four sisters, Mary Lou (Al) Feltes, Jane (Terry) Bode, Joyce (David) Pearce, and Adele (Dick) Helbing.

Beverly A. Bartels Treneman
Beverly Ann Bartels Treneman, formerly of Dubuque, died July 11, 2019.
Beverly Ann Bartels Treneman was born on Feb. 18, 1931, to Mildred and Carl Bartels in Dubuque, Iowa, the eldest of four sisters. She loved music and played the piano, bass fiddle and bagpipes. After graduating from Dubuque Senior High School, she attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a degree in occupational therapy.
As a member of the university’s Highlanders, the only all-woman Scottish bagpipe marching band in the world, Beverly toured Scotland, England, and France in 1952. At university, she met her husband, Dr. James D. Treneman. They married in 1954 and settled in McMinnville in 1959 after brief stints in Fresno, California, and Harlingen, Texas. She and Jim had four daughters. He died in 1977, after 23 years of marriage.
Beverly was a master quilter and accomplished seamstress, keen gardener, cook, businesswoman, and bridge player. In partnership with four other women, she ran The Bookshop in downtown McMinnville for 20 years. She contributed countless hours to the First Presbyterian Church, Juliette House, Daughters of the American Revolution, PEO and other charities throughout her life.
She was a woman of many interests, travelling widely, as far afield as Turkey, Tahiti, and the Galapagos Islands. She and her companion of many years, Jim Wixson, visited Europe and travelled throughout the US in their Model A Ford. She visited almost every National Park, reading extensively on the history and culture of the places she visited. Beverly explored new activities throughout her life: canoeing, rafting, skiing, and snorkeling. She loved to collect and was always ready to go ‘antiquing’. Her home was full of the fragrance of flowers and the aroma of cooking, art and music.
Beverly’s strength of character, love of family, sense of humor, interest in learning and compassionate nature will be remembered by all who knew her.
Beverly is survived by her four daughters, Ann Treneman Berkoff, Nancy Treneman, Joan Horton, and Mary Maeve Holden, grandchildren Gillan Allan, Vanessa Charman, James Treneman, Lyle Horton, Elaine Grimps, and Max Holden, two great-grandchildren, and her two sisters, Nancy Wendt of Klamath Falls, Oregon and Carole Loetscher of Dubuque, Iowa.
All are welcome to attend her funeral at 11am on Saturday, 20 July, at the First Presbyterian Church, 390 NE 2nd Street, McMinnville, with refreshments afterwards. There will be a graveside ceremony at 3pm at Smith Cemetery, 2 miles south of Monmouth on Helmick Road. Farnstrom Mortuary of Independence is handling the arrangements. Contributions in her memory can be made to the James D. Treneman Family Practice Fund at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon.
