Steven M. Rohner

Steven M. Rohner, age 59, of California, formerly of Dubuque, was called home suddenly on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital, Santa Clara, California. To honor Steve’s life, funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, with Deacon Jim Luksetich officiating, followed by full military honors being accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. To celebrate Steve’s life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Steve was born on June 11, 1958, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Matt and Mary Eileen (Conlon) Rohner. Steve spent the majority of his earthly journey right here in Dubuque and was always proud to have been surrounded by family and friends on a daily basis, but to also have been in the 1976 graduating class of Hempstead High School. Steve would eventually go on to honorably serve his country, for 4 years, with the U.S. Marine Corps where he put his natural abilities to use even further while making many new lifelong friends along the way. Steve spent many years in the construction trades, but the primary days of his working career were invested within the many years he spent operating heavy equipment with the Iowa DOT. After moving to California though, Steve decided to devote the last 8 years of his earning potential with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in San Francisco. In his free time, Steve enjoyed staying fit and continually faced the battle of aging head on by incorporating a little weight lifting into his day, hitting the trail for either a nice jog or a relaxing bike ride, or even jumping into the refreshing pool to get a few laps in if time permitted. But, what Steven really enjoyed, if truth be told, was any opportunity to jump on his Harley Davidson FatBoy and simply hit the open road. The freedom of two wheels beneath him, and the open air surrounding him at the end of the day, are where Steve truly found peace and serenity. Steve was also a very kind and generous man throughout his entire life and his most recent trip to Puerto Rico to help the rebuilding process is clearly evidence of a humble and caring man whose heart was always in the right place when it came to his fellow man. Steve’s great sense of humor, his loving personality and his positive influence on the world around him will be missed by all who knew and loved him. We were absolutely not prepared to have to say “farewell for now” to Steve, but we trust that his soul rests safely in the arms of his Gracious Lord and Savior now, that he is beginning to play cards with his new inner group, and that thankfully we will all get to hear his hearty laugh once again when we also join him to begin our eternal walk with Jesus. God bless you Steve and thank you for all of the wonderful memories you leave behind for us to treasure! Those left to cherish Steve’s memory include his daughter, Emily Voshell, Dubuque, IA; his grandchildren, Myah, Ayla and Elijah Voshell; his siblings, Dianna (Al) Bahl, Mary Kay (Bill Moreland) Glaze, Judy (Tom Lewis) Latham, Jim (Mary) Rohner, Dick (Joyce) Rohner and Mike (Karen VanOstrander) Rohner; many nieces and nephews; along with his “California work family” and numerous friends in Dubuque. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 sisters, Suzie Rohner and Debbie Rohner. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.behrfuneralhome.com

Laura Rosalia Carrier Sodawasser Heying

Laura Rosalia Carrier Sodawasser Heying, 96, passed to the Lord and angels from Hawkeye Nursing Facility on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. God watch over her and keep her in his love.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Friday June 8 at Holy Spirit Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m., Thursday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd.

Laura was born on December 12, 1921 the oldest child of Lewis and Hilda (Felder) Carrier of Guttenberg, Iowa.
She was a hard-working wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She lived during the Great Depression doing with little to get by. While a young girl living in Guttenberg she graduated from St. Mary’s grade school and high school. She sang in the school choir and worked at the button factory, punching buttons from river shells, along with helping her family of three sisters and two brothers with many chores. During these years she met Russell Sodawasser, her high school sweetheart, living also in Guttenberg.

She married Russell while in the army in July 1943 and lived in Guttenberg. Upon his return from service in WWII they lived in Dubuque, Waterloo and then returned to Dubuque. Born to this marriage were two daughters, Laura Lee and Jean Marie.

She worked at The Dubuque Stamp and then The Dubuque Pack for 29 years until the Pack closed its doors. While working at the Dubuque Pack she met many friends, which she stayed in touch with throughout the years. One of her favorite trips was to Hawaii with her lady friend, Mary Danzer.

Russell preceded her in death in May 1979. Laura and her daughters enjoyed shopping and going out to eat. Spending time with mom created lots of precious memories.
A few years after Russell’s death Laura married Louis Heying. They traveled and enjoyed life together. He preceded her in death a few years after marriage.

We truly love our mom. We were like The Three Musketeers! We tried to do things as threesomes. Mom really enjoyed gambling and to this she had her name on a few tri-state billboards and also won a Cadillac at the Diamond Jo. In later years the Diamond Jo was known as her “fun” place.

She was known for her famous rhubarb pie and many delicious cakes and meals from scratch. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker!

Even in all years, mom enjoyed dancing and always had “heels” ready for a fun night out. She was a “classy” lady. To this we add “Hard working hands are now at rest”! Mom, we miss you terribly.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters, Laura Lee (Melvin Randy) Degenhardt and Jean McGeough; grandsons, Clayton (Tanya) Degenhardt, Eric (Abbey) Degenhardt, and Kyle McGeough; great- grandchildren, Gunnar and Chiara Degenhardt and Rosalyn and Gilbert Degenhardt; brother, Daniel (Rita) Carrier; brothers-in-law, Ray (Ruth) Kleinow, Wayne (Sandy) Sodawasser; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Carrier and Georgia Sodawasser; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Patricia Kleinow, Sr. Mary Ann Carrier, Winifred “Winnie” Fassbinder; and her brother, Jerome (Bud) Carrier; son-in-law, Gary McGeough; brother-in-law, Henry Fassbinder Jr.; a niece, Julie Fassbinder Sodawasser Zittergreen; many aunts and uncles; and in-laws, Albert (Florence) Sodawasser; Father Ardell Sodawasser, Della Rose Banwarth, Al and his son, Richard Sodawasser and Bob (Rita) Sodawasser.

A Laura Heying Memorial Fund has been established.

Our thanks to EMT’s, Finley Hospital, and Mercy Hospital, Dr. Kris Nelson and Joan from Grand River Medical, Jill and the staff at Hawkeye Nursing Facility and h#mce_temp_url# for your kindness and care given towards mom and us during this difficult time

Throughout his life, Gene was able to build a great marriage, raise four kids that adore him, run a successful company, teach his grandkids to love anything with wheels, surround himself with friends, and show the world you really can be happy every day.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Paula; his favorite daughters, Jennifer (T.J.) Bryant, Kim (Wayne) McDermott, Angie (Brett) Crosby; his favorite son, Jonathan (Jill) Paisley; and 9 grandchildren, Paisley, Katrina, Lexi, Alisha, Cole, Wyatt, Gavin, Owen, Theo.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Judy; and his mother and father in-law, Jeanne and Jim O’Rourke.

A special thank you to all the staff at the U of I Hospital and Clinics Burn Unit and the Sherrill Fire Department during this time.
