Lucille M. Sirk

Lucille Madorin Sirk, age 94 years, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away Saturday, May 26 at Stonehill Care Center.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 31 at 11 AM at Temple Beth El, 475 W. Locust, Dubuque, IA conducted by Rabbi Jim Sagarin. A luncheon will follow. She will be buried at a later date next to her husband in San Diego, California. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road is in charge of the arrangements.

Lucee was born June 18, 1923 in Tefft, Indiana She grew up in Chicago and went to Hirsch High School. She then spent one semester at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and then transferred to the University of Illinois in Champaign, where she was introduced to Arnie Sirk. He was the love of her life. They married in December, 1943 and spent 61 1/2 very happy years together until he passed away in June, 2005.

From the time she got married, she committed herself to her husband and family. Arnie and Lucee had two children, Randy and Cindy (Pearce). After Arnie got out of the Air Force at the end of WWII, they moved to Chicago and raised their children there. In addition to being a stay-at-home mom, Lucee became an amazing volunteer and philanthropist. She was a shining example of someone who cared about the underdog. She was constantly busy with family, extracurricular activities, and not-for-profit involvement.

She became very active in the National Council of Jewish Women and became president of the Chicago Chapter. Having not finished college, she decided in her 40’s to go back to school and Lucee received her Bachelors degree at age 50.

In 1978, Arnie decided to move his business to Dubuque and so they moved to Galena and built a house on Pilot Knob. They really embraced living in the country, growing an extensive garden and canning their produce. Lucee continued her charitable efforts and was instrumental in the creation of the Family Center, a place for mothers and children to gather and learn in Galena.

When Arnie retired at 68 years old, they moved to San Diego, California. Oh what a wonderful life they had there. They made many new friends, got involved in the temple there, and loved that chapter of their lives.

At age seventy-five, she decided she wanted her nickname to be Lucee, not Lucy, and not Lucille! She was so vibrant, always thinking!

In addition to her involvement in volunteer causes, Lucee enjoyed participation in many activities over the years. She spent many years playing tennis and golf at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club and other places in Chicago and San Diego, and she loved to play bridge, especially duplicate. She and Arnie enjoyed traveling and went to many places around the world, including Africa, Korea, Thailand, Russia, and Australia.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Randy (Teresa) Sirk and Cindy (Brett) Pearce; and her grandchildren, Denise Mann, Brad Sirk, Erik Sirk and her step-grandson, Jim Mikel, Jr.; and her two great granddaughters, Taylor and Alexa Mann.

She was predeceased by her husband Arnie and by her step-granddaughter, Deborah Mikel Wood, in 2010.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Temple Beth El, P. O. Box 185, Dubuque, IA 52004-0185.

The family wants to express a special thank you to the staff at Stonehill who took such good care of Lucee for more than 3 years. And also a special thanks to the staff at Oak Park Place who were so kind to her for three years prior.

Her smile and loving personality will be deeply missed. We will cherish the memories of her.

Vince was born on June 27, 1930, in Balltown, Iowa, son of Alphonse and Eleanor (Hansen) Brimeyer.

Vince grew up, surrounded by family and friends, in beautiful northern Dubuque County. He honorably served his country with the U.S. Army for over 2 years with the 389th Construction Engineer Battalion in Dubuque, and served another 2 years active duty as a Motor Sergeant, from January 1953 to December of 1954, with the 5th Infantry Division, 11th Infantry Regiment, in Augsburg, Germany. He was raised with the values of honesty and diligence, alongside a strong work ethic, and put those character traits to use as a child on local farms during the summer, and working side by side with his dad in the shop in Balltown. He then spent 3 years at the Avalon Garage before finally starting at Clemen’s Motors, as a repair technician, working his way up to the position of service manager before he had invested over 23 years of his working career with them. Vince wasn’t all work though, providing for those he loved in his personal life was the reason for the work. He was united in marriage to his soul-mate, Alice Klein, on September 25, 1951, at St. Joseph Church in Rickardsville. They were blessed with 59 wonderful years together, and 3 children, before Alice was sadly called home ahead of him on August 29, 2011. He and Alice lived a rich and abundantly full life and were proud to have accomplished visiting all 50 states with family and friends throughout the years. In his free time, Vince enjoyed sitting down to watch his Cubs take the field, or the sights and sounds of a NASCAR race on a sunny day, and was even fortunate enough to have attended the Indy 500 3 times, as well as the Brickyard 400, to watch his favorite drivers, A.J. Foyt and Jeff Gordon, in person. He and Alice also spent as much time as they could in the great outdoors, fishing poles proudly in hand; a love which they’ve continued to pass down to their children and grandchildren today. More than anything though, Vince was a family man through and through. In his later years, Vince always looked forward to any opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; listening intently to all of their stories of daily life all while joyfully watching them attain what he knew to be the magnificent milestones of growing up. He was also very active with several groups around town, including the American Legion Dubuque Post #6, the John Deere Retirees Association, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Vince’s faith was also a very important aspect of Vince’s life, and he not only tried to live the Christian life by example, but was also a long-time and faithful member of the Church of the Nativity. We are deeply saddened today at the loss of such a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, and positive role model to all who knew him. But, we do find peace in knowing that in time the pain will begin to heal, and thankfully we find comfort in trusting that not only will we all be reunited again one day, but that Vince and Alice are finally doing a little catching up as their eternal union begins.

Grace M. Kagel

Grace M. Kagel, age 89 years, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 10:25 a.m., on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center Dubuque, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Grace’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road, with Rev. Richard Ament officiating. To celebrate Grace’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m., until the time of services at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at the Church of the Resurrection. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Worthington, Iowa. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is in charge of arrangements.

Grace was born on May 23, 1929, in Hopkinton, Iowa, daughter of Leo and Mary (Grace) Ament.

Grace grew up in the Worthington area, with her 4 brothers and dear sister, where she would eventually graduate from St. Paul High School before beginning to work on her Bachelor’s Degree at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, and then finally achieving her Master’s Degree in Education from Western University in Macomb, Illinois. She would go on to invest over 51 years of her time and talents as a special education music teacher in Dubuque, Waterloo and Remsen, Iowa, and Peoria, Illinois. Her love for music and working with some of the Lord’s most precious children brought her true satisfaction and contentment throughout the entire journey. Grace was devoted to her faith life from a very early age and was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis in Dubuque for over 20 years. In time, Grace would also find love in her personal life at home and was united in marriage to John “Jack” Kagel on May 19, 1973, at Sacred Heart Church in Peoria. The couple was blessed with 36 wonderful years together, before Jack was sadly called home ahead of Grace on February 1, 2010. When Grace wasn’t at work, she could regularly be discovered at home with either a crochet needle, or a good book in hand. Grace was definitely a people person and any opportunity to make the world a little better place was never lost on her. Her genuine personality, and love for her fellow man, were continually on display and easily leave behind a legacy which all who knew and loved her can retain through these difficult days ahead. The Lord was generous in giving Grace 89 years, plus 1 day, here on earth and we are forever grateful for her vibrant and gracious presence during that time. We will miss Grace more than she could possibly know, but we are joyful that she is now, once again, reunited with her loving family who’ve been called home ahead of her.

Those left to cherish Grace’s memory include

her brother,
Wilfred (Mary) Ament, Decorah, IA;

her sisters-in-law,
Nina Ament, IL
and Irene Ament, NV;

and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John “Jack” Kagel; and her siblings, Leo (Joan) Ament, Donald (Beth) Ament, Leonard (Ophelia) Ament and Pauline (Richard) Guise.

Grace’s family and friends would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Mercy Hospital, and Luther Manor, for all of their wonderful care, concern and support of Grace. And a very special thank you to her Dubuque Angels; Rachel, Bev, Mike and Mary Pat, Bill and Sue, and Karlyn for all of their loving care, time and devotion to Grace.
