Harold E. Langkamp

Harold E. Langkamp, age 89, of Dubuque, IA, was called home peacefully at 9:05 p.m., on Sunday, December 2, 2018, at ManorCare Health Services, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Harold’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at St. Patrick’s Church, 1425 Iowa Street, with Msgr. Thomas E. Toale officiating. To celebrate Harold’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Harold was born on May 13, 1929, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Clarence and Emma (Launspach) Langkamp.

Harold honorably served his country with the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1954 in Germany, where he would meet the love of his life, Maria Gaa. The young couple would be united in marriage on January 16, 1951, in Germany, and the two were blessed with 65 wonderful years together, and 5 children, before Maria was called home ahead of him on August 8, 2016.

Harold was raised with a strong work ethic, and devoted his time and talents to Morrison Brothers for 40+ years, until his well earned retirement. He was also quite handy with a tool belt, and enjoyed tinkering and working on projects around the house. In his younger days, Harold enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors hunting and fishing, and in later years went out walking as often as he could. Harold was quite a card shark, a skill he looked forward to teaching all of the children and grandchildren, and was well known for starting them out at a very young age. He was always up for a spirited game of Euchre or Poker with the family, and would occasionally test his skills and luck at the Casino. Harold’s sense of humor was legendary, he had a playful, joking personality, as well as a sweet way of flirting with the ladies, making sure they all felt beautiful and special. Family, beyond a doubt, brought the greatest joy into Harold’s days, he especially loved any chance that came his way to play with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We are deeply saddened at the loss of such a wonderful, devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, but take comfort in knowing that he and his beloved wife, Maria, are now once again reunited in their Heavenly home.

Those left to cherish Harold’s memory include

his children,
Harold Langkamp Jr.,
Giselle Langkamp,
Willy Langkamp,
Lana Sheldon
and Sandy Parker, all of Dubuque, IA;

his grandchildren,
Amanda (Brian) Wlochal, Brett Langkamp, Jennifer (Bill Hattula) Sheldon and Matthew Parker;

his great-grandchildren,

his siblings,
Arnold “Bub” Langkamp

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Maria Langkamp; and his siblings, Leonard (Delores) Langkamp, Merlin “Mac” (Darlene) Langkamp and Beverly Piehl; and a brother-in-law, James “Jim” Chapman.

Robert J. Bahl

Robert J. Bahl, Jr. age 64, passed away peacefully on Nov 28th at Unitypoint/Finley Hospital. He was born on October 6, 1954 in Dubuque IA., son of Robert J. Bahl Sr. and Wilma L. (Konzen) Bahl. He served his country in the United States Air Force and earned his Bachelor of Science Nursing degree in San Antonio, Texas. He was a dedicated ICU nurse for over 25 years.

Robert was no stranger to pain…his own pain, and that of other’s. He witnessed it all. In the toughest of situations, he was there to help. He used his medical knowledge and bedside-bravery to be caring and honest. Being honest was how he was raised, how he grew up, and how he lived his life. No question, his honesty may have caused others some discomfort at times. But that didn’t change who he was nor the lifestyle he lived.

He shared his life with his closest of friends and family. Robert was generous. He enjoyed travelling, great food, and fine wine – and he loved to share all of that with others. At an early age his ears taught his fingers how to master the piano. He liked musicals and theater, appreciating each note, applauding each act. From dinner parties to birthday celebrations, he was the Master of Detail. Had his health not failed so rapidly he would have choreographed the weather for his own funeral.

Robert’s independent vision of life may have broadened the vision of others. An interesting dichotomy of sorts – but interesting, he was. A good son, a good brother, a good uncle, a good friend.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Wilma.

He is survived by his siblings Janice (Dave) Wagner, Barb (John) Liphardt, Diane (Tom) Thompson, Alan (Nancy) Bahl, Joyce (Dane) Jackson, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his very special friend Ann Butterfield of Santee, CA. Ann, you made him whole.

We would like to thank the 5th floor nursing staff at Finley especially Travis, Ellie, Debbie, and Chrissy for their wonderful care.

For what is man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught. To say the things he truly feels. And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows
He took the blows
And did it his way
