Michael J. Covington

Michael J. Covington, 59, of Monticello died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Visitation will be held from 2 – 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018 at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello where a Celebration of Life will follow.

Mike was born September 22, 1959, in Boise, ID the son of James and Saundra (Schulte) Covington. He graduated from high school from Rapid City Central High School in Rapid City, SD. He started college in Birmingham, Alabama and later earned his bachelor’s degree in Vermillion, SD. He enjoyed being a salesperson for the Ford Motor Company. Mike married Kristine Ann Butterfield in 1991. Together they made their home in several places around the Midwest as Mike earned promotions within the Ford Company. They moved to Monticello in 1998, to care for elderly parents. Mike had various jobs in the area until his health began to decline. He loved to go bowling, play chess with friends and family, and watch the Broncos whenever they played. Mike also loved being a grandpa. He tried to be as active in his grandchildren’s lives as his health would allow and they held a very special place in his heart.

Surviving are his mother, Saundra Covington, a brother, Preston Covington, both of Monticello, a son, Anthony (Ashley) Weir of Cedar Rapids, 2 daughters: Shayla and Kassandra (Chance Dempsey) Butterfield, of Monticello, 7 grandchildren: Alyssa and Michelle, Soren, Isabella, Anthony Jr., Mikaila and Declan; 2 brothers-in-law: Scott Butterfield of Monticello and Roelf Maritz of Weatherford, TX, 1 sister-in-law: Amber (Robert) Garza of Holopaw, FL.

He is preceded in death by his father, his wife, and a sister, Debra Nefler.

Dorothy M. Beetem

Dorothy M. Beetem, 90, of St. Mary’s Apartments passed away on Monday, November 5, 2018 at Unity Point Health- Finley Hospital.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, November 7 at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road, with Deacon John Stierman officiating. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Dorothy was born on May 21, 1928 in Guttenberg, Iowa the daughter of Matthew and Margaret Duehr. She married LeRoy Beetem on December 31, 1946.

Dorothy enjoyed puzzles, going to farmer’s market and a good glass of wine. She was fond of cardinals or “the red” birds and made sure her bird feeder was always full. She was a wonderful homemaker and loved being with her family.

Surviving are her children, Jim (Karen) Beetem and Sue McGinnis; 6 grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son-in-law, Larry McGinnis; and her siblings.

A Dorothy Beetem Memorial Fund has been established.

David William Miller

David William Miller, 87, of Dubuque, Iowa, and formerly of Maquoketa, passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at ManorCare in Dubuque, Iowa.

Graveside military rites and burial will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, November 17, 2018, at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Delmar, Iowa. There is no public visitation. Cremation rites have been accorded. The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

David William Miller was born on September 10, 1931 in Spragueville, Iowa, to Russel Wilbur and Winnifred Lauretta (Gannon) Miller. He attended school in Preston and later received his Associates Degree while living in Washington D.C. following a 13-year military career, earning a Bronze Star. He had served in both the Marine Corps and the Army.

Upon receiving an honorable discharge, David retired from the Federal Government in Washington D.C., and then worked as maintenance man at several apartment buildings in D.C.

David was a member of the Elmer H. Brown Spragueville American Legion Post #590 and the Andrew AMVETS Post #62. He enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting and his beloved dog Leah. He was especially proud of being a veteran and his military service, becoming a Quilt of Valor recipient on November 6, 2016.

He is survived by sisters-in-law, Corrine Miller of Delmar, IA, and Margaret Mary “Peg” Miller Maquoketa, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Leona (Leo) Jessen, Mildred Miller, Marcella (A.D.) Rohse, Russell Miller, John L. Miller, James D. Miller and Paul D. (Patricia) Miller.

Jeffrey E. Adams

Jeffrey E. Adams, 60, of Monticello and formerly of Iowa City died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018 in Monticello after a long illness.

Jeff was born October 24, 1958, in Iowa City the son of Robert and Shirley (Moore Wiggs) Adams. He graduated from Iowa City City High with the class of 1975 and served as a cook in the Navy. He attended Longview Community College in Kansas City, MO in the culinary school and worked as a chef in the Kansas City area for a number of years. He returned to Iowa and lived life on his own terms, taking on odd jobs as the need arose.

Jeff loved his Harley Davidsons, NASCAR Racing, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jeff is survived by a daughter, Brandi Li (Kenny) Carmer of Denver, CO, 3 grandchildren; Sean, Johnny and Nick, siblings: Mike Adams of Solon, IA, Dan (Diana) Hall of Muscatine, IA, Kevin (Cary)Hall of Rio, IL, Tim Adams of Texas, Ruth (Charles) Alewine of Elgin, TX, Angi (Steve Kick) Wiggs of Tiffin, IA and Kim (James) Bartels of North Liberty, IA; numerous nieces and nephews, and 1 uncle, Roy (Sharon) Adams of Iowa City, IA.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Odilo H. Steines

Odilo H. Steines, 95, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, died Saturday, November 3, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cuba City with Rev. David Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Tuesday at Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cuba City where the parish wake service will be at 1:45 p.m. Friends may also call from 9:00-9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church before the service.

Odilo was born on October 2, 1923, in Preston, Iowa, the son of John and Mary (Ziement) Steines. He married Ardis Budde on September 19, 1949. She preceded him in death on May 29, 2009. Odilo was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army from 1943 to 1945. He was an honorary member of American Legion Post 273 of Bellevue, Iowa, and an honorary member of the Bellevue Council 1354 Knights of Columbus. Odilo participated in one of the first Honor Flights to Washington, D.C.

Odilo was a hardworking man, farming and working 25 years at Clinton Engines in Maquoketa, Iowa. Even in his “retirement” years he was always there to help his family. After Ardis, the love of his life for 59 years, passed away in 2009 he really enjoyed playing cribbage for a couple of hours every day with his daughter, Lois. He loved family “get-to-gethers” and being able to spend time with them. Playing cards, bingo, the domino game “Mexican Train” and “playing the slots” were other past times he enjoyed.

Odilo is survived by their six children, Lois (Merrell) Casper, of Cuba City, WI, Don (Cathy), of Menominee, IL; Doris, of San Antonio, TX, Jane (James) Munson, of Dickeyville, WI, James (Sharon), of Platteville, WI, and Dee (Steve) Kalmes, of Springville, IA; fifteen grandchildren; one step-grandson; 33 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Dori Johnson, of San Antonio, TX.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Vincent (Clara), Attlas (Algean) and Johnny (Velma), and three sisters, Lydia (Tony), Helma (Bill) and Helen (Marvin).

Michael C. DeMaio

Michael C. DeMaio, age 69, of Dubuque, was called home unexpectedly on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at his home. To honor Mike’s life, funeral services will be held at 5:30 p.m., on Thursday, November 8, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, with Deacon John Stierman officiating. To celebrate Mike’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:30 p.m., until the time of services at 5:30 p.m., on Thursday, November 8, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Mike was born on July 29, 1949, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Charles F. and Erma Mae (Bender) DeMaio.

Mike was a proud graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, Class of 1967. After graduation, Mike joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he honorably served his country in Okinawa for a year. After returning home from the service, Mike went to work at A.Y. McDonald’s, before eventually moving on to become a heavy equipment operator for Peavey Grain, which would become Con-Agra, for several years, until his retirement in 2015. In his free time, Mike loved spending time in the great outdoors, whether it be trying his luck at his favorite fishing hole, or sitting quietly in the woods, with his trusty rifle by his side, waiting for the perfect shot to present itself. We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of our son, brother and uncle, and will miss him more than words can express, but know that he is now resting in peace with his mom and brother, for all Eternity.

James J. Weber

James J. “Jim” Weber, 73, of Peosta, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 2, 2018, with his daughter by his side.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at the Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where a memorial service will be at 6:00 p.m.

Jim was born on October 1, 1945 in Dubuque, one of four children of Burdette “Jack” and Darlene (Noggle) Weber. On July 12, 1996, he married Karen Sheppard, the love of his life.

He held various jobs in his younger years and often said he should write about a book about some of his experiences. He worked 30 years at John Deere and retired as an Inspector in the Engine Division in 2002. He told many fond stories about working there and it was where he met some of his closest friends including Doug Oberfoell. Doug remains his best friend to this day and there wasn’t a thing he wouldn’t do for Jim. He was a member of the UAW Local 94 from his first day and strongly believed in his union.

Jim was a passionate hunter and fisherman and spent a lot of his life doing both. He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for over 20 years and never missed a banquet. He belonged to the National Rifle Association for over 30 years and had a collection he was proud of. In the Rendezvous circuit, he was known as “Mountain Man” and loved buck skinning and black powder reloading. To his daughter he was “Papa Bear” and was very protective of his “cub”.

He was a man of many stories and many phrases as he loved to make his friends and family laugh. No matter what he was eating, he would say “it tastes like chicken”. His smile and warm personality will be missed by many and in his final days, he was deeply touched by all the people that came to visit him.

He is survived by his daughter Tina; his brother Kevin (Kathy) Weber; nephews Gabe & Kristopher Weber; niece Kara Weber, all of Dubuque, grandson Logan Weber and two of the greatest aunts anyone could have, Dolores Stillmunkes and Rainee Shaffer.
He was preceded in death by his wife Karen, his daughter Fawn, his parents Jack & Darlene, his brothers Jerry and Joseph and his beloved uncle Butch Noggle.

A special thank you to Hospice of Dubuque, especially his nurse Edna, Dr Cao, Dr Hermann and the staff of Hawkeye Care Center including Larry, Cris and Courtnie.

Sister Muriel McCarthy, BVM

Sister Muriel McCarthy, BVM (Baptist), 97, of 1050 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at Marian Hall.

Visitation will be from 9-10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, in the Marian Hall Chapel. Sharing of Memories will be at 10:15 a.m., followed immediately by the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial is in the Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Sister Muriel was an elementary teacher in Chicago; Kansas City, Mo.; Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tujunga, and Santa Anna, Calif.; and a secondary teacher in Petaluma, Calif. She served as principal in Los Angeles and Tujunga, Calif. She was a parish minister, office assistant and teacher aide in San Francisco and an office assistant in Santa Rosa, Calif.

She was born on Jan. 5, 1921, in San Francisco, to Michael Joseph and Mary Dolores Campbell McCarthy. She entered the BVM congregation on Sept. 8, 1939, from St. Anne Parish, San Francisco. She professed first vows on March 19, 1942, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1947.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Dolores Kelly; and a brother Francis.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 79 years.

Betty J. Taylor

Betty J. Taylor, 87, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday morning, October 31, 2018, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 11 A.M., Saturday, November 3, 2018, at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:30 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Betty Jean Wilson was born on May 18, 1931 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Victor A. and Helen I. (Brady) Wilson. She was a 1948 graduate of Maquoketa High School and married Lee E. Taylor Jr. on June 12, 1949 in Maquoketa, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Vickie, Ronald, Cathy and Dennis.

Betty was a homemaker who in her younger years had worked as an aide at the Jackson County Public Hospital, and also for National Tea Grocery Store, both in Maquoketa.

Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, working on puzzles, socializing at her favorite hangout place “McDonald’s”, playing cards and going to garage sales.

Those left to honor Betty’s memory include her children, Vickie (Steve) Earles of Maquoketa, IA, Ronnie (Connie) Taylor of Maquoketa, IA, Cathy Blackburn of Maquoketa, IA, and Dennis (Lesa) Taylor of Prior Lake, MN; a brother Lonny Wilson of Bettendorf, IA; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lee on August 3, 2001, and three grandchildren Lara Taylor, Billy Blackburn, Zander Blackburn.

Gene L. Duwe

Gene L. Duwe, 87, formerly of 1070 Roosevelt Street, Dubuque passed away peacefully, Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Stonehill Care Center, surrounded by his family.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2018 at St. John’s Episcopal Church. where friends may call from 9:00 to 11:15 a.m. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery with military honors. Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family.

Gene was born February 5, 1931 in Guttenberg, IA. son of Lloyd and Ruby (Portwein) Duwe.

He married Nancy Strong, April 19, 1952 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dubuque.

He attended school in Guttenberg.

Gene retired from John Deere in 1987.

Nancy was the love of his life and he enjoyed traveling with her to many places in the United States. He also enjoyed woodworking, hunting and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren in his later years. He rarely missed any of the families sporting events. Gene was a devoted and loving family man. His sweet smile and infectious laugh will be greatly missed.

Gene was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and served on their vestry. He was also a long time member of the Moose Lodge and the Leaky Lodge and a proud member of the Local UAW # 94. He served several years in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Surviving are his wife Nancy Duwe; children, JoAnn (Jeff) Chance, of Port Orchard, WA, Dennis (Janelle) Duwe, of Dubuque, Linda (Andy) Willging, of Sherrill, David (Kim) Duwe, of Dubuque, and Kathy (Ahmad) El-Ali, of Grand Rapids, MI; grandchildren, Jodi, Jason, Jeff, Ashley, Justin, Zachary, Brian, Brad, and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Vince, Gabe, Alex, Samantha, Tim, Naomi, Abigail, Macey, Sofia; special life-long friend, Bob Wolf, special brother-in-law Wayne Wilming, and family friend Rick Heinz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Timothy and a granddaughter, Jill.

Richard C. Potter

Richard C. Potter, 91, of Dyersville passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at Luther Manor in Dubuque.

Visitation will be held from 2-8 pm Monday, November 5, 2018, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville where American Legion Post 137 will hold a service at 7 pm. Visitation will continue Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the United Methodist Church in Epworth from 9:30 – 10:15 prior to funeral services.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at the United Methodist Church in Epworth, with burial in Memorial Garden Cemetery in Dubuque. Pastor Stephanie Schlimm will officiate. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 137.

Richard was born May 28, 1927, in Volga, Iowa, the son of Charles Zenda and Grace (Lowe) Potter. He served in the United States Army from 1950-1952, in the European Theatre. Richard married Joyce Bergmann on January 14, 1961, in Indianola, Iowa. Together they enjoyed traveling with their family, especially to places he could not visit while trucking. When traveling to Monterey Bay to visit family, Dick’s first priority was to sail on rough seas before any other sightseeing. Later in life he enjoyed making replica models of horse-drawn carriages and his family home farm, and collecting vintage tools.

Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce; four children: David (Diana) Potter of Monterey, CA., Scott (Jennifer )Potter of New Haven, MO, Laurie (Matt) Urban of Dubuque, IA, and Randy (Anne) Potter of Dyersville, IA; grandchildren: Chelsea (Bill) Jakob, Justin (Lindsey) Potter, Jessica (Josh) Rankin, Elizabeth (fiancé Dustin Boyette) Urban, Samuel (Kenzie) Urban, Sarah O’Dell, Amanda (Justin) Adams and Timothy Potter; great grandchildren: Bill Jr. (Emily) and Johnathon Jakob, Bethany, Michael, Daniel and Hannah Rankin; a sister, Norma Vondra of Easley, SC; sisters-in-law, Lucille (Ed) Hiller of Indianola, IA and Maxine (Jim) Bots of Marthasville, MO.

Marlene K. Schrobilgen

Marlene K. Schrobilgen, 87, of Asbury, passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at home, surrounded by family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 3, at Church of the Resurrection. Rev. Phil Gibbs will officiate. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 2, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque, where there will be a prayer service at 2:30 p.m., and a selection of songs by The Lads at 6:45 p.m.

Marlene was born March 13, 1931 in Dubuque, the daughter of Alfred and Helen (Kelly) Dietz. She married William Schrobilgen on September 16, 1950 at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Asbury. Marlene was a longtime member of Resurrection Parish, where she was involved in the Mother’s Club and served as a Eucharistic Minister.

Marlene cooked for many years at The Coach House and Sweeney’s Supper Club. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, and bike riding. Marlene loved hummingbirds and collecting angel figurines. She was devoted to her family, and she loved spending time with her grandkids.

Marlene is survived by her husband, William; their children, Cynthia Thommen of Dubuque, Cathe Haigh of North Buena Vista, Terry (Barbara) Schrobilgen of Cassville, WI, Thomas Schrobilgen of Dubuque, Susan (Robert) Humke of LaMotte, Timothy (Rose) Schrobilgen of Hawaii, Amy (Tim) Bemis of Dubuque, and Jodi Schrobilgen of Dubuque; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; her sisters, Janann “Nan” (Charles) Higgins of Florida, and Karen (Donald) Schaufler of New York; and her in-laws, Bob Massey, Ann Hall, Kay Ackerman, Marlene Luchsinger, Don Schrobilgen, and Jeanette Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Adrienne (Harold Klein and Tom Taggart) Klein Taggart, Shirley Massey, Moya (John) Breitbach, and Helen (Cletus) Gorsche; her parents in law, John and Clara Schrobilgen; her brother in law, John Schrobilgen Jr.

Christopher D. Chapman

Christopher D. Chapman, 19, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2018.

Funeral services will be 5:30 p.m., Friday, November 2 at the Church of the Nativity with Rev. Msgr. James Miller officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., Friday at the church. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road is assisting the family.

Chris was born on September 15, 1999 in Dubuque, the beloved son of Ann (Sawvel) Butzier and Daniel Chapman.

Chris was a loving son, tightly-bonded brother, and incredible friend with a tremendous heart. He was deeply loyal and highly protective of his family and friends. Chris could be described as incredibly handsome, strong, quiet, funny, insightful, fun-loving and mischievous. He was deeply admired and loved by all who had the joy of knowing him.

Chris’ personality and smile attracted many during his life. He shared an undeniable bond with his sister and brother, who enjoyed precious time together, countless memories, and many laughs. He also has a tremendously close and loyal core group of lifelong buddies. Chris was so fortunate to be surrounded by the very best of friends, sharing the same values as Chris and so many wonderful experiences over his lifetime. Chris’s family feels so overwhelmingly blessed to have these friends and their families in their lives. They will all forever treasure his memory. Most called him Chris, but others knew him as CChap, Jet Ski, Chrissy, and Babar.

Chris attended Kennedy Elementary School, Washington Middle School and graduated with high honors from Dubuque Senior High School. Following graduation, Chris continued his education at Drake University, majoring in Accounting and Business. He was extremely studious, always devoting the time needed to succeed. Chris was a member of the National Honor Society and an Academic Excellence award winner. He was also a Silver Chord recipient in recognition of his commitment to volunteerism and community service. Chris was clearly capable of accomplishing tremendous things with his brilliant mind and drive to succeed.

Chris lived an active vibrant life, filled with many activities and passions. Whether academics or sports, Chris was driven to be the best, and his accomplishments were many. From Chris’ early years, sports were always at the forefront. He participated in youth football, soccer, baseball, basketball, wrestling, swimming, hockey and track. Chris remained active in soccer, wrestling, football and track into his high school years. Soccer was a lifelong passion for Chris, playing for teams in Dubuque AYSO, Dubuque Soccer Club, FC United and Dubuque Senior High School. Chris also participated in football and wrestling for the Rams but his true passion at the high school level was track, and his accomplishments were numerous. As a senior, Chris was a meet record holder, 2nd team all MVC conference athlete, a relay record holder, a multi-medal winner at A.D. Dickinson Relays, Drake Relays and State Track, a Telegraph Herald Athlete of the Week and finished his track career with the 3rd highest single season point total in school history.

Chris had numerous interests outside of organized athletics. His passions were endless. He enjoyed music, fishing, kayaking, snowboarding and running around in his Jeep with its top down. A day didn’t go by without catching him doing some dance moves. Chris adored his beloved dogs Beau and Roxie.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Ann Butzier (friend Jeff), of Dubuque; father, Daniel (Dawn) Chapman, of Lone Tree, Colorado; sister, Sarah Chapman and twin brother, Ben Chapman, both of Dubuque; and other siblings including Taylor and Mitch Chapman and Alex and Nic Butzier; grandparents, Peg (Don) Thiltgen, of DeWitt, Iowa; great-grandmother, Katie Sawvel of Dubuque; Stevie Lambe who always has a special place in his heart and many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

He was preceded in death by his step-father, Dr. Doug Butzier; grandparents, James Sawvel and Milt (Corrine) Chapman; uncle, Mike Chapman; and aunt, Deb Dodds.

In lieu of flowers a Christopher Chapman Memorial Fund has been established.

Keith M. Spielmann

Keith M. Spielmann, 41, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Dyersville passed away Monday, October 29, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Visitation will be held 2-8 p.m. Sunday, November 4, 2018, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville where a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm. Visitation will continue Monday from 9 – 10 am at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2018, St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, Iowa with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Ralph Davis will officiate.

Keith was born Nov. 13, 1976, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Michael and Mary (Wolfe) Spielmann. He graduated from Western Dubuque High School with the Class of 1995, and went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in graphic art at the Colorado Institute of Art in 1999. He was employed with Bimm Ridder Sports Wear in Cedar Rapids as a Graphic Design Artist.

Keith was a very sweet, generous and loving son, brother and uncle who loved to spend time outdoors fishing, always looking forward to the annual Wisconsin Fishing Trip with his brother, Kevin. He also enjoyed hiking with his family and all of the dogs, movies and listening to music. He was a member of the Dyersville Court of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Keith is survived by his mother, Mary Spielmann of Dyersville, siblings: Pati Spielmann of Charlotte, NC, Pam (Rob) Knoot of Cedar Rapids and Kevin Spielmann of Prairieburg; 2 nieces, Sabrina and Savannah Dyer, a nephew, Jonas Knoot, his Boxer, Cleo, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Michael, in 1997, his grandparents, Rachel and Eugene Wolfe and Aloysius and Margaret Spielmann.

Memorials are preferred to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation or the St. Francis Xavier Basilica Organ Restoration Fund.

Walter J. Schlichtmann

Walter J. Schlichtmann, 86, of Dubuque died Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Dubuque Specialty Care.

There will be no public visitation. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Walter was born September 4, 1932 in Dubuque, son of Claus and Adele Schlichtmann. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was deployed to South Korea for 18 months.

He married Eleanor Reisen on August 15, 1953.

He worked at John Deere for 30 years.

He was a mechanical genius and was able to build his own home. He loved using his mechanical expertise on cars and motorcycles. He was a member of the Hawkeye Motorcycle Club and enjoyed doing the sound and time trials at the Dickeyville Hillclimb. He also had a passion for tube radios and their repair and restoration. It is said that some men are Jacks of all trades and master of none, but Walter was master of all.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Schlichtmann of Dubuque; three children, Gary (Bridget) Schlictmann of Dubuque; Dr. James (Elaine) Schlichtmann of Iowa City and JoAnn Vize of Dubuque; nine grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary (Lindsey) and Abraham Schlichtmann; Anna and Grace Schlichtmann; Colin, Ryan, Desiree Hannig; and Calvin Vize; three great grandchildren, Ethan, Aylana Schlichtmann and Violet Hannig; a sister, Marita Hermann; brother in law, Milton (Judy) Reisen; a sister in law, Karen Schlichtmann and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother and sister in law Clarence and Ellen Schlichtmann; sister, Marie Schlichtmann; brother in law, Milton Hermann, and two nephews, Jon Schlictmann and Jake Jones.
