Linda J. Markee

Linda J. (Hartshorn) Markee, age 73, of East Dubuque, IL, completed her earthly journey suddenly on November 3, 2024, at MercyOne in Dubuque.  To honor Linda’s life, a private family Celebration of Life is being held.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Linda’s family.

Linda was born on June 28, 1951, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Wardie and Jane (Francois) Hartshorn.  She was gifted with a kind and loving soul which she carried faithfully throughout her entire life.  Linda eventually met the love of her life, Ron Markee, and the two were blessed with many wonderful years together and a family of their own to love and nurture along the way.  Linda spent her working hours outside of the home as a waitress on the Diamond Jo Casino.  She made countless friends and always enjoyed visiting and helping everyone to have fun while they were in her care.  But, for those who knew and loved Linda most, it was no secret that her heart was most content and satisfied at home surrounded by her family.  Creating a loving and comfortable environment was a priority in her home and when the holidays were in season, you could be sure that her home was going to be decorated to the nines.  Linda treasured each day, and when family and friends were nearby, nothing could be greater in her heart and mind.  It’s with heavy sadness and heartache that we must face the days ahead without Linda’s light and love around us.  Thanksgiving and Christmas will undeniably be quite a bit dimmer this year and we can only pray that her spirit living on within our lives will help to lift the darkness we feel.  Thank you, Linda, for keeping life simple and teaching us all that the most important things in life could never be purchased in a store, but rather are the moments we have to gather with those we love.  May the Lord bless and keep you securely in His grace-filled arms until we all get to see your beautiful smile once again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Linda include,

her loving husband of 58 years,
Ronald “Ron” Markee, East Dubuque, IL;

her five children,
Gary (Michelle) Markee, Dallas, TX,
Valerie Markee, Waterloo, IA,
Pamela “Pam” (Steve) Schueller, Hazel Green, WI,
Kevin (Rachel) Markee, Elroy, IL,
and Jeff Markee, Lena, IL;

her twenty adored grandchildren,

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents.

She attended Leo High School and married her “forever dance partner”, Jim Schmitt, on October 29, 1977, in Rickardsville, Iowa. Amy worked for 45 years at Mercy as a physical therapy aide and home care clerk, a career she cherished for the many dear friendships it afforded her. She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church, and volunteered her time at Mary’s Inn maternity home, a role that would bring a “bonus” granddaughter, Natalie, into her life.

Amy possessed the rare combination of warmth and kindness capable of buoying the spirits of those in her presence. Her bedrock in life was her faith, and the significance of her passing on All Saints’ Day was noted by those closest to her, many of whom regarded her as a saint in their hearts. She was an active country western dancer and could be found most Wednesdays at the fairgrounds, her natural beauty and zeal for life on full display.  More than anything she enjoyed bringing her family together for weekend brunches and holiday gatherings, many of which included activities of her own invention which brought so much joy and laughter to all in attendance.

Those left to carry on Amy’s legacy include her husband of 47 years, Jim Schmitt, her devoted sons Jesse (Michelle) Schmitt, of Dubuque, and Brian Schmitt of Chicago, Illinois, and her “perfect” grandsons Colton and Nathan Schmitt. She is also survived by her siblings Laurie (Rick) Juran, Penny Murphy, Peter (Carmen) Klein, Julie Donovan, Tony Klein, Todd (Heidi) Klein, David (Amanda) Klein, Kenneth “Chip” (Elsa) Klein, mother-in-law Lucy Schmitt, in-laws Lynne (Mark) Wolf, Sharon (Tom) Wolf, Lee (Carrie Merrick) Schmitt, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She is reunited with her parents Kenneth and Sally, sibling Paul Klein, father-in-law Richard Schmitt, and in-laws Dennis Donovan, Dan Murphy and Wayne Schmitt.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque for providing comfort to Amy in her final days and her friends and family for their endless support and prayers.

Phyllis A. Berns

Phyllis Ann (Junk) Berns, 94, longtime resident of Garnavillo, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 4 – 7 pm on Friday, November 8, 2024, at Morris Funeral Home in Garnavillo. Visitation will continue from 9 – 10 am on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, with burial in the church cemetery.

Born on February 16, 1930, to Gregor and Marie (Fassbinder) Junk in Guttenberg, Iowa, Phyllis was the 4th of 6 children.

After graduating from St. Mary’s High School, Guttenberg, Phyllis went to work as a stenographer at a Guttenberg farm implement company, where she met her sweetheart, Leon Berns. They married September 15, 1949, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg.

Phyllis was the mother of nine children, a role she cherished above all else.  She found fulfillment in the quiet, everyday tasks of life, whether it was stitching a quilt, preserving food from her garden, or sharing her talent for music through her clear, soprano voice. Phyllis was a wonderful seamstress, quilter and homemaker who took joy in caring for her family and welcoming others into her home.

Phyllis lived a life grounded in faith, family and simple joys. Her home was always open to family and friends, offering warmth and kindness to all who entered. Her deep faith was central to her life. She was a CCD teacher, served as Rosary Society president, and was a faithful Eucharistic minister and choir member at St. Joseph’s Parish, all for many years.

In her latter years, Phyllis found joy in traveling with her husband, Leon, often reminiscing about the many places they visited. She took pleasure in restoring furniture, working patiently to bring new life to each piece. She loved good music, especially classical pieces. She enjoyed watching old movies and musicals and her great sense of humor was evident in her love of comedy shows. Phyllis also loved to dance, and she and Leon were members of a square dance group. She was known for her talent as a cake decorator. Phyllis had a special connection with nature, particularly with hummingbirds, which seemed to be drawn to her presence.

Phyllis is survived by seven of her children: Julie (Jon) Jordahl, Beth (Stephen) Young, Charles (Heidi) Berns, Barbara (Joe Leone) Berns, Rita (Chet) Koth, Tom (June) Berns and Nancy (Scott) Neely; as well as son-in-law, Michael Thornton; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren plus one on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon, in 2021; two of her children: DeAnne Thornton in 2021 and John Berns in 2024.

Though Phyllis lived a modest life, she touched many with her gentle spirit, her faith and her willingness to lend a hand. Her family will always remember the love she gave, and the many simple beautiful moments shared with her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Croix Hospice or St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Morris Funeral Home in Garnavillo is assisting the family and information is available at www.morrisfuneralhomes.com. Memorials may be sent to Morris Funeral Home (in care of the deceased) 207 South 1st St, Guttenberg, IA 52052.
