Gregory L. Schmitz

Gregory LaVern Schmitz, 66, of Baldwin, Iowa, passed away at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota on May 25, 2025.

Greg was born on November 16, 1958, in Lancaster, Wisconsin, to LaVern and Lillian (Sudmeier) Schmitz. He received his early education at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Maquoketa, Iowa.

On March 24, 1979, Greg married Roxanne Williamson at the Catholic Church in Lost Nation. Together they raised three children: Marsha, Mitch, and Kristin.

Greg’s strong work ethic was evident from a young age. He began working for Sacred Heart Catholic Church, mowing the cemetery grounds, and also working at the Derby. Over the years, he took on many roles, most notably his 20-year tenure as Ron Yeager’s trusted farmhand, driving semi for Farmer’s Supply Center in Delmar, and later, owning and operating Schmitz Trucking. Greg was a true jack-of-all-trades—there wasn’t much he couldn’t fix. Those who knew him will remember his unwavering work ethic, his quick wit, and his knack for pulling off a good prank. He was, in the best way, “always full of it!”

Greg is survived by his girlfriend, Rae Simonin of Baldwin; his children: Stacey (Jacob) Reuter of Maquoketa, Marsha (Cory) Simonson of Maquoketa, Mitch (Anna) Schmitz of Lost Nation, and Kristin (Ara) Bowman of Maquoketa; and his grandchildren: Breanna, Braden, Lexy, Jace, Allie, Dalton, Charli, and Hugh. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the many healthcare professionals who cared for Greg over the years, especially Dr. John Whalen and his dedicated team at Tri-State Dialysis in Dubuque, Iowa.

A special thank you goes to Greg’s kidney donor, Scott Perkins. Scott’s extraordinary gift gave Greg an additional 11 years—a gift of time that allowed him to create countless more memories with loved ones and welcome a few more grandchildren into the world.

In his final act of generosity, Greg gave the gift of life through organ donation. His selfless decision continues to make a profound impact on the lives of others, a legacy that reflects the giving spirit he carried throughout his life.

A celebration of his life will be held at 12 P.M., Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 10 A.M. until service time.  Cremation will follow the services.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Gregory L. “Greg” Schmitz memorial fund has been established.

Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Jim’s family.

Jim was born on January 31, 1967, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Gerald and Joanne (Rossman) Hayes.  He enjoyed each day he was given and made the most out of the life he had.  Jim was a proud graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and eventually found his way into the carpentry trade.  He invested the majority of his career with Callahan Construction, but also worked at Wickes Lumber Company and Anderson Window and Door for a time.  Jim made many friends over the years and always found time to relax when the workday was done.

Jim was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and never missed a game if it was possible.  He also spent countless hours working on his baseball cap collection over the years and found great joy when his newest acquisition made it into the rotation.  He possessed an outgoing spirit and combined with his friends disposition; it was difficult not to be friends with Jim.  Sadly, he has been called home much too soon for those who knew and loved him to contend with.  His legacy of loving life and embracing the day will surely live on in the memories of his family and friends.  Thank you, Jim, for never attempting to be someone other than yourself and may you find peace from your earthly battles today as we wait patiently to see your smiling face once again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Jim include,

Mary E. Konrardy

Mary E. Konrardy, 78, of Dubuque, Iowa peacefully passed away on May 20th, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics with loved ones. Mary was a devoted Catholic, cherished teacher, and loving mother and grandmother. Her strong faith, kind spirit, and dedicated commitment to her community left a memorable mark on all who knew her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 29th, 2025, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Dubuque, Iowa with Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Mary was born on April 22, 1947, in Dubuque, the daughter of Orville and Lucille (Kress) Conlan. She graduated high school from Visitation Academy in 1965. Mary then continued her education at Clarke College majoring in English and Spanish. During her graduate studies, Mary spent a semester in Mexico.

Mary began her teaching career at Davenport West and later moved to Dubuque where she taught at Washington Middle School and Dubuque Senior High School. After teaching for 33 years, Mary retired; however, she continued to substitute teach for a few years following her retirement. As a dedicated teacher, Mary inspired generations of students not only with her knowledge, but with her quiet strength and genuine care for others.

She married Roger Konrardy at St. Patrick’s Garryowen on July 20, 1973, and they were happily married for 45 years. Together in life as they are now in rest, Mary and Roger shared a deep and enduring love, built on laughter, spirited debates, and countless miles of road trips in their cherished restored cars. Whether cruising scenic countryside or enjoying a favorite diner, their adventures were always side by side. Passionate about politics, they could often be found in thoughtful conversation, exchanging ideas with warmth and wit. Holidays at their home were filled with joy, good food, and open arms, where family and friends gathered year after year. They found joy in the company of their children and grandchildren, with whom they shared stories, wisdom, and unconditional love. Their legacy of love, curiosity, and togetherness lives on in the hearts of all who knew them. Roger preceded her in death on February 20th, 2019.

Mary’s life was deeply centered around her Catholic faith. A daily communicant, she faithfully attended Mass and served as a Eucharistic Minister, finding joy and purpose in sharing the Body of Christ with others. She found solace and strength in the power of prayer, often spending time in Eucharistic Adoration and praying the rosary, both alone and in community. Her passion for life extended beyond the classroom and the church. Mary was an active member of Dubuque County Right to Life, where she championed the dignity of all human life with conviction and grace

Mary found joy and peace in the simple beauty of nature, especially in her beloved garden, where she spent countless hours tending to flowers that bloomed under her loving care. Her garden was not only a reflection of her creativity and patience, but also a place of solace and inspiration for all who walked by the house. Whether planting spring tulips or nurturing tomatoes and peppers, she brought beauty into the world one blossom at a time. Her love for gardening mirrored the way she lived—quietly, lovingly, and always making things a little brighter.

Mary was also extremely proud of her Irish heritage. Deeply connected to her roots, she found great joy in Irish traditions—the music that stirred her soul, the stories passed down through generations, and the comforting flavors of home-cooked meals that reminded her of family and history. Her home often echoed with the sounds of traditional Irish melodies, and she delighted in celebrating holidays with spirited cheer, hearty laughter, and the kind of hospitality that made everyone feel like family. Mary embraced her Irish identity not just in celebration, but in the way she lived—with resilience, generosity, and a fierce love for those close to her. Richard Hoerner

Richard Hoerner, born November 4, 1961, passed away at home on May 21, 2025. No public services will be held for Rick. In his memory, please live with kindness, take time to ask about others, and place the needs of family and friends above your own. This will carry on his legacy.

On April 14, 2024, age 63, Rick experienced his first symptom and was soon diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a fast-growing, incurable and cancerous brain tumor.  During his illness, his challenges were primarily in his speech and visual perception.  Despite being told multiple times that he only had a few months to live, he continued to embrace each day by traveling and staying active. His unlimited planks became his staple daily activity.  Rick spoke of how living with this disease showed him to live life without getting too hung up on little things. Through this illness, Rick finally was able to be more open about his feelings and emotions. This was a side of Rick we rarely saw.

Rick’s authentic self was pure, kind, and graced with love that illuminated anyone who came into contact with him.  The longer you were around Rick, the clearer you would grow to understand he was truly genuine. Through his million dollar smile and taking a moment to ask about your life, you knew you mattered to Rick.  Regardless if you were a customer, a friend he hadn’t seen in years, or the mailman, he had a way to make you feel like you were the center of the universe.

Rick was athletic his whole life. Being a Hoerner, he grew-up around a baseball field, and this helped develop his love for the game.  Later, as a young adult, he traded  baseball for fast-pitch softball and volleyball.

His love for an active lifestyle stayed with him his whole life and he passed this fondness and appreciation of the outdoors and adventure onto his children. Whether it was bike riding, hiking, traveling, or being on the river, his family always accompanied him.

Rick was creative.  He had a talent to visualize how something should look then he would create it.  He drew his complete house remodel on a restaurant napkin! He crafted, carved, painted and built many things including a complete home and houseboat remodel.  He took great pride in meticulous work, always paying attention to fine details–especially when it came to school projects for his kids.

Rick’s personality was natural for sales.  He was incredibly successful whether he was selling pizza or steel due to two important things: hard freaking work & being personable. Even during stressful workdays, he somehow always managed to put his family first, sometimes driving across an entire county to attend a family obligation.

Rick lived his life conservatively. He was not afraid to share his opinions about politics, social issues, & parenthood.  However, his willingness to create open dialogue with anyone (even the opposing side) always allowed him to expand his knowledge, constantly living his life as a learner.

Rick was not a risk-taker–although some would say marrying Sandy was a risk! In truth, the two balanced each other nicely during their 33 years of marriage. Rick was patient, especially with Sandy. They married in 1993, and despite a 9-year age difference between the two, they worked through any difficulties. He was conservative; she wanted change. He flew by the seat of his pants; she was detail-oriented. He was calm; she was passionate. He was a pleaser; she would say what was on her mind.  He was cautious; she was a rule breaker. He was financially savvy; she was not-so-frugal about a budget.  Although opposite in so many ways, they blended the differences to form similar beliefs and values–attributes they so beautifully bestowed upon their three children.

Rick is survived by his wife Sandy (McGrath) Hoerner, their children, Streat Hoerner, Samantha (Ben Muhlstein) Hoerner, and Hannah (Max) Unmacht, as well as Rick’s mother, Sally Hoerner.  He is preceded in death by his father, Jim Hoerner.

Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family. To leave online condolences for Rick’s family please visit www.leonardfuneralhome.com/obituary/Richard-Hoerner

Donald A. Weiler

Donald A.” Butch” Weiler, age 61, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey suddenly on May 20, 2025, at home after a 9-month courageous battle with cancer.  To honor Butch’s life, a private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Butch’s family.

Butch was born on September 25, 1963, in Dubuque, IA, son to Robert A. and Margaret M. (Schneider) Weiler.  Butch could fondly recall many adventures of his childhood with his seven siblings while growing up in St. Catherine. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1983. After graduation he joined Job Corp in Denison, IA. Butch had a great work ethic, he held two jobs for almost 40 years, one in the maintenance department at ARC and the other at Service Master. Butch was a proud member of the teamsters’ union.

Butch was an avid sports fan. You could find him any day sitting on his front porch with the antenna positioned just right catching a game of any sort, but he loved to watch football, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes! He was a creature of habit especially since his “early retirement”, never missing an episode of his favorite show, The Big Bang Theory, or his Nightly News with David Muir. Butch also loved to tune in and ride along with the storm chasers. Although we needed to remind him that if the show ever got to close to Dubuque he better get to the basement.  He was a self-proclaimed grill master and loved to find new recipes on-line to try out. Butch had quit the sweet tooth and always had a “treat corner” fully stocked with his favorites which included anything chocolate, brownies and cupcakes.

He was a quiet, calm, simple and kind man who was always willing to help when he could, never complaining. Butch had an easy going, laid back personality that allowed him not to sweat the small stuff, even when the small stuff was big stuff.  He took pride in all of his accomplishments.  His personality was a gift to all of us and a reminder to be present in the moment and enjoy the loved ones around us.  He also showed courage in the way he fought for his life, never giving up and always saw the positive things in everything and everyone.  Butch will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

Those left to cherish the memory of Butch include,

his siblings,
Mary Weiler, Dubuque, IA,

and Susan (Timothy) Gantz, Wisconsin Dells, WI;
