Anna Mae Flammang

Anna Mae Flammang, age 93, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2024, while in hospice care at Friendship Manor in Shakopee MN.   Surrounded by family and escorted by angels, Anna Mae will be reunited with her husband and other family members while leaving behind many cherished memories.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2024, at St. Joseph Church Key West. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Martin Obeng officiating.  Burial will follow at Holy Rosary Cemetery in La Motte, Iowa. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.

Anna Mae was born and raised in La Motte IA and was a blessing to her parents, Peter M. and Anna [Manders] Koos.  She graduated from La Motte Holy Rosary High School in May 1949.  As Maid of Honor for her first cousin, Anna Mae first met Paul Flammang, her future husband, who was the Best Man. Anna Mae and Paul were married in August 1951.  During their 53-year marriage they welcomed and raised three daughters.

Anna Mae had a strong work ethic and worked many years as a farmwife both in the house and the fields on the La Motte homestead. Her favorite cow was Daisy who was the milk cow for many, many years.  She always enjoyed her cats and had names for them all.  She raised baby chickens annually and always had an ample supply of fresh eggs for baking – so chickens were also a favorite on the farm.

During the winter months when farmwork was less demanding, Anna Mae enjoyed working on crafts, completing jigsaw puzzles and baking.  She baked many delicious desserts and always had special requests from family.  Her desserts, including angel food cake and warm chocolate chip cookies, brought joy to countless gatherings – especially the Christmas season.

In the early years, gardening provided wholesome, fresh vegetables for her family.  After retirement, however, Anna Mae’s garden became more of a collection to a vibrant assortment of flowers and gourds and she found unique ways to display them in her yard; every year she looked forward to receiving the seed catalogs and made her selections.

Anna Mae meticulously preserved cherished memories through colorful pages filled with family photographs [not all were preapproved by the kids], newspaper clippings and handwritten notes capturing milestones, holidays, garden flowers and favorite pets.

In her 70’s, Anna Mae was finally able to travel and took a few family trips to the West which she really enjoyed including a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, a drive up and down Pike’s Peak and the beautiful views at Bryce Canyon National Park.

Forever loved by her children, Mary Kay Krogman, Lou Ann [Steve] Winchell, and Paula Flammang; grandchildren, Joe [Lisa] Krogman, Dawn [Jamie] Suchomel, Nicole [Sean] Winchell-Colby, Rosa [Josh] Hainstock, Anna Mae Papadopoulos, Paul Gatzios and Dimitri Gatzios; nine great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Her heart, her voice, her presence, and her light will be deeply missed.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sons-in-law Nicholas Papadopoulos, Athanasios Gatzios, and Joseph Krogman.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the family.

The family wishes to thank Friendship Manor and Allina Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.

Millard R. Engelkins

Millard R. “Jesse” Engelkins, age 71, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on April 10, 2024, at Stonehill Care Center with his loving family by his side.  To honor Jesse’s life, a memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at St. Joseph the Worker Church, 2001 St. Joseph Street, with Very Rev. Daniel Dellaert officiating.  Family and friends are invited to join in fellowship for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Dubuque, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Jesse’s family.

Jesse was born on February 24, 1953, in Clinton, IA, a son to Arthur and Alice (Sikema) Engelkins.  He spent some time in an orphanage in his youth and learned that life is not always what we want it to be, but rather how we react to what it is.  Jesse gained some farming skills while there and developed a love for animals and the outdoors which he carried throughout his life.  He went on to honorable serve his country for four years with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany primarily before returning home to begin his working career and start a family of his own.  He was a longtime member of the American Legion Dubuque Post #6 and worked with the Army Corps of Engineers at Lock and Dam 11 for over 37 years before retiring from there.  Jesse was proud of his time with the Lock and Dam and always maintaining his membership with the Narfe Federal Employees.  He always wanted to run his own business and thankfully was blessed to own and operate Jesse’s Lawn Mowing Service for another 26 years and even spent another year as a courier with Medical Associates before health issues arose and ended his working years abruptly.  Jesse was a self-determined man with a strong work ethic that never wavered.  The example he had set was as solid as his motivation for always giving his best.

Jesse was united to the love of his life, Shirley Klein, on April 23, 1983, at St. Joseph the Worker Church and the couple enjoyed many wonderful years together and had two children of their own to love and adore.  In his free-time you could generally find Jesse out for a ride on his Harley, testing the tune-up on his sports car, or testing his skills at the Blackjack table.  But, everyone who knew and loved Jesse always understood that his greatest joy in this life was his family.  Whether going out to dinner and a movie, squeezing a little traveling into his busy schedule, or even just playing with the grandkids whenever possible, in Jesse’s mind nothing was more valuable or important than the hours in which his family was right by his side.  It’s difficult to imagine moving forward without Jesse and the world we live in will never be the same.  The tears, heartache and brokenness we bear today can only serve as a heavy reminder of the love we were blessed to experience.  We pray that the Lord will help to comfort our spirit as He holds Jesse securely in His loving arms and only pray for peace throughout our remaining days until we can meet Jesse again in eternal perfection.  God bless you Jesse and thank you for bringing such love and light into so many lives along your journey among us.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Jesse include,

his beautiful bride of 41 years,
Shirley Engelkins, Dubuque, IA;

his two children,
Jesse (Amy) Engelkins, Madison, WI,
and Jenna Engelkins, Dubuque, IA;

his two adored grandchildren,
Evelyn “Evie” Engelkins and Elizabeth “Izzy” Engelkins;

his brother,
Earl (Betty) Engelkins, Fulton, IL;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Nancy (Ron) Clark, Ardith Kohl, and Dale Engelkins.

God has you in His arms, and we have you in our hearts.  Love, your family.

Pastor Sue Ann Cubbage

Pastor Sue Ann Cubbage, age 77, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on April 9, 2024, at home while surrounded by her loving friends.  To honor Sue’s life, a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the Center Grove Methodist Church, 3140 Brunskill Road in Dubuque, with Pastor Nancy Sutherland officiating.  Family and friends are invited to join in fellowship from 12:30–1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church and at the reception in the church basement following her burial in the Center Grove Methodist Church Cemetery.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Sue’s family.

Sue was born on April 25, 1946, in Louisville, KY, a daughter to Robert and Lucille (Parsons) Cubbage, Sr.  She was one of God’s unique creations where He surely broke the mold when He was done.  Sue’s love for her Creator, country and community were continually on display throughout her 77 years walking among us.  She honorably served her country with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and upon returning home began her journey into the Methodist Ministry and earned her Theology Degree.  She was a faithful pastor at congregations in Hayti, MO, Mt. Union, IA, and lastly with the Center Grove United Methodist Church in Dubuque.  While she was serving in Mt. Union, she also took the time to serve on the City Council to help make a difference on another level in the lives of those around her.  She was also a member of the Southeast Iowa Interagency Drug Task Force for some time and always found a way to be a positive force in every community where the Lord placed her.  Sue never backed down from an idea or challenge and when the opportunity to initiate and organize the first potato drop at Nativity Church came to mind, she was sure to run the project to its fruition.  Again, putting others needs before her own was an unwavering drive in Sue’s daily life and so many were touched by her determination who may have never even had the chance to meet her firsthand.

Sue knew how to enjoy the quiet moments in life as well.  Her affinity for European and French cuisine were never quenched and when time allowed, Sue could easily be found in the kitchen working on her next delicious presentation.  She also enjoyed playing the violin when the moment struck and her talents were undeniably enjoyed by many fortunate enough to be in the vicinity.  Sue was also a cat lover at heart and her favorite feline companions, Oscar and Allie, were truly two of the most spoiled and pampered pets on the planet; she was “Mama Sue”.  She was intentional about being the love and light in each day and discovered real satisfaction in knowing that other lives were blessed in the process as she simply faced each day being herself.  It’s difficult to imagine a world moving forward without Sue’s beautiful spirit leading the way.  We will miss her dearly, but find peace in knowing that she is now free from her earthly battles and rest in eternal perfection with her Lord and Savior.  Thank you, Sue, for never looking back and always looking forward to something better and may we all find inspiration in our own lives as we seek peace in the legacy you leave behind today.  May the Lord bless you and keep you safe in His loving arms until we all meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Sue include her dear friends,

Carol Westhoff, Dubuque, IA,
Ron (Patti) Westhoff, Dubuque, IA,
Jim (Nancy) Westhoff, Dubuque, IA,
Tom (Tammy) Westhoff, Delhi, IA,
Kathy (Jerry) Fennel, Dubuque, IA,
and Judy Diefenthaler, Madison, WI;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; and friends, Linda Schaetzle and Dave Diefenthaler.

Sue’s family would like to thank Dr. Jill Powers, along with the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque for all of their professional and compassionate care.

Benjamin M. Duggan

Benjamin M. “Ben” Duggan, age 24, of Maquoketa, IA, formerly of Dubuque, completed his earthly journey suddenly on March 31, 2024, at home.

To honor Ben’s life, a Remembrance Gathering for family and friends will be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m., on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the American Legion Hall, 1306 Delhi Street in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Ben’s family.

Ben was born on June 5, 1999, in Omaha, NE, a son to Jay P. and Sunny J. (Rose) Duggan.  The family eventually made their way home to the Dubuque area where Ben was able to enjoy some of his favorite outdoor activities.  Anything outdoors, and especially an afternoon on the river, whether with a fishing pole in hand, or a jet ski full of fuel, Ben was sure to enjoy every minute of the afternoon under the sun.  He was a people person at heart and an evening of bowling with friends, or a little time in the kitchen preparing a delicious meal for those around him were also welcome ways to spend his time.  Ben always enjoyed a little music playing in the background, but his greatest joy was surely the time he spent painting with his Dad.

He was recently working at Plastics Unlimited in Preston and enjoyed the friendships he had been developing during his time there.  Ben faced each new day, and the challenges which came along with them, with a kind heart and an infectious sense of humor.  It’s truly impossible to imagine a world moving forward without our dear Ben walking beside us and we can only hope that in time some semblance of peace and healing will be found, but for now, we’ll simply battle each minute and the heartache each one carries until we can discover those moments.  Thank you, Ben, for leaving behind some good memories for us to treasure in the short amount of time the Lord was gracious enough to share you with us and may you now find peace from your earthly battles as we wait patiently to see your sweet smile once again, only this time while residing in eternal perfection.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Ben include: his loving parents, Jay (Sunny) Duggan, Maquoketa, IA; his grandparents, Ken (Sara) Duggan, East Dubuque, IL; his siblings, Jessica (Eric Bratland) Moore, Omaha, NE, and Jake (Tammy Hargrove) Moore, Pacific Junction, IA; his nephew, Anthony Moore, Omaha, NE; his aunts and uncles, Jodi (Joel) Oss, Venice, FL, Cheryl (Dave) Jansen, East Dubuque, IL, Christy (Scot Freiburger) Benton, Dubuque, IA, Curtis (Jeanette Taylor) Herbst, East Dubuque, IL, Robert (Kelly) Rose, Omaha, NE, and Joseph Rose, Omaha, NE; along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Ben was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Beverly Duggan and Jean Rose.

Ben’s family would like to extend a heartfelt and sincere thank you to all of Benjamin’s friends for their kind words and prayers.  We would especially like to thank Cory (Cassie Nelson) Lambert for their strength and shoulders to lean on during this difficult time.  The love and support we have received has truly brought some moments of peace into these days where it seems like none could ever be possible and we are forever grateful for each and every one of you who has extended your love, support and compassion.
