Olivet Cemetery at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Jean’s family.

Jean was born on May 23, 1931, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to John C. and Calista (Murphy) Bakey.  She attended St. Joe’s Academy and eventually met the love of her life, Daniel B. Jean was a hostess at Yen Ching for over 20 years and enjoyed meeting and making many friends along the way.  She eventually retired in 1973 which left her with a little more free-time to spend doing what she loved most, baking in the kitchen.  Jean was well-known for her zucchini bread, divinity and Christmas cookies, but everything she creating in the kitchen was truly an experience to remember.  Jean also enjoyed the challenge of working on puzzles whenever possible and thankfully rarely met one she couldn’t beat in the end.  Jean was a force for good in the world around her and her absence will surely be felt by all who knew and loved her.  Thank you, Jean, for sharing your love and light with the world around you continually and may the Lord now keep you and bless you in His loving arms until we all meet again.

Dick grew up in a close-knit family and attended MFL High School, where he graduated in 1962. He went on to Upper Iowa University, where he showcased his athletic talents by playing baseball and basketball. In 1965, his prowess on the baseball field caught the attention of the Minnesota Twins, and he played minor league baseball for two seasons. Despite his promising athletic career, Dick was committed to education and graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education, with a minor in Sociology.

Dick’s professional journey as an educator began at Elkhorn-Kimballton School, where he taught Physical Education. In 1969, he moved to Maquoketa and continued to inspire young minds at Maquoketa Junior High School. His passion for sports and education led him to serve as the Head Baseball Coach, Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, and eventually Principal at Maquoketa Community High School, a role he held for 13 years. After a fulfilling 24-year career, Dick retired in 1999, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and dedication.

His contributions to athletics were recognized when he was named Administrator of the Year by the Iowa High School Athletic Association in 1998 and when he was inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame for baseball in 2005.

Dick married the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann “Beth” Mehlhorn, in Shawano, Wisconsin on June 9, 2001. Their union was a testament to love and partnership, and together they built a life filled with joy and laughter.

Dick’s love for sports was a cornerstone of his life. He was a talented semi-pro ballplayer, known locally for playing with the Maquoketa Indians. A lifelong fan of the Milwaukee Brewers, the Green Bay Packers, and the Iowa Hawkeyes, Dick’s enthusiasm for sports was infectious. His interests extended beyond the field, as he enjoyed hunting, fishing, old country music, and playing cards. In his later years, he enjoyed watching his grandkids play ball.

Linda D. Davis

Linda D. Davis, age 72, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on October 26, 2024, at home, while surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Linda’s life, a private family service is being held.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Linda’s family.

Linda was born on December 11, 1951, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Carl L. and Charlene A. (Dunkley) Davis.  She was gifted with a spirit of courage and found great joy in always being a little ahead of the curve in many areas in her life.  Linda spent the first 15 years of her working years with the Dubuque Packing Co., but eventually began working as an interior/exterior painter for a few years while perfecting her wallpapering talents too.  In time she decided to stretch her entrepreneurial wings and opened her first business, the Crescent Moon Coffee Shop.  She thoroughly enjoyed visiting with the regulars there and in time opened her second business, Storefront Flea Market where she was able to combine her work ethic with her passions.  Linda retired in 2019, but always looked back on all of her accomplishments with fondness as she laid the groundwork for so many women to follow in the generations to follow.

Linda also embraced life to the fullest whenever possible and surely understood that all work and no play can be a deafening approach to real joy in this life.  You could easily find her cruising down the road on her motorcycle on a nice day, but just as easily taking her chances at the poker table to see who truly possessed the skills to win that game.  She had an affinity for antiques as well and never passed up on a unique treasure when it came across her path.  But, for those who knew and loved Linda best, her greatest joy was in the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren.  Linda was a devoted mother and grandmother till the very end and the memories she leaves behind now will only help to heal the pain of her loss for those around her.  Thank you, Linda, for leading with boldness and bravery each step of the way and may we strive to carry on your legacy in our lives as well.  We will love you and miss you until the end of our days and may the Lord keep you secure in His loving arms until we all meet again.

Those left to cherish the memory of Linda include,

her three children,
Kelly Simon Hoffmann, Dubuque, IA,
Brooke (Luke) Tigges, East Dubuque, IL,
and Chad (Amanda) Simon, Wisconsin Rapids, WI;

her adored grandchildren,
Andrew (Nicole) McDonald, Danielle Hoffmann, Lucas (Morgan) Hoffmann, Derik Tigges, Emma Tigges, Lilyan Tigges, Eva Tigges, Bailey Simon, and Logan Simon;

her siblings,
Pam Davis, Dubuque, IA,
Jeff (Lori) Davis, Dubuque, IA,
and David (Gae) Davis, Brainerd, MN;

her sister-in-law,
Cathy Davis, Cedar Falls, IA;

Linda Lou Schnoor was born on January 11, 1951 in Jackson County, Iowa, to Allen and Edna (Heeren) Schnoor.  She grew up in Maquoketa and proudly graduated from Maquoketa High School. Her early years were filled with the love and guidance of her parents. On July 1, 1989, she married the love of her life, Harold G.A. “Grubby” Grobstick, in Bettendorf, Iowa, and together they built a life full of laughter, love, and cherished memories until his passing on September 10, 2012.

Linda began her career at the Rockdale Quarry in Maquoketa, working alongside her father. When the quarry was sold to Century Concrete, Linda continued to apply her skills and dedication with the new owners. Later, she brought her warmth and kindness to Maquoketa High School, where she served as a lunchroom server until her well-deserved retirement.

Linda’s zest for life was evident in her many interests. She was a social butterfly who loved cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Her passion for cars was unmistakable, especially when she was behind the wheel of her Mustang convertible, cruising to car shows or simply enjoying the open road. Above all, Linda’s greatest joy was her family. She was the heart of family gatherings, always ensuring that everyone felt loved and connected.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Debra (Delbert) Shaw of Eldrige, IA, Melanie (Roger) Thiering of Davenport, IA, and James (Terry) Grobstick of Davenport, IA; brothers, Rodger (Pat) Schnoor of Monmouth, IA, and Lynn Schnoor of Maquoketa, IA; 6 grandchildren, Beth (Dan) Ruffner, John (Mallory) Shaw, Joe (Nicki) Thiering, McKenzie Lillyblade, Brett (Ashlee) Thiering, and Erin (Kyle) Allender; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild with one on the way; sister-in-law, Helen Schnoor of Maquoketa, IA; aunt Fern Schoenthaler of Maquoketa, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold, and a brother Allen Schnoor.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, October 28, 2024, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11:00 A.M. to 12:45 P.M. at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.  The family requests you dress casually and wear your favorite Iowa Hawkeyes or Dallas Cowboys attire.
