Theresa Darmofal Townsend
It is with both joy and sadness that we announce the passing of Theresa “Terry” Darmofal Townsend, 93, of Galena, IL, who went peacefully to be with her Lord on April 1, 2024. A visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena, on Monday, April 15, 2024, from 10 AM to Noon, with mass beginning at Noon. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family. On April 16, 2024, a visitation will be held at the Kerr-Paryzgnot Funeral Home, 540 Dixie Highway, Chicago Heights, IL 60411, from 11 AM to 1 PM with a funeral service to follow at their chapel. The burial will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Steger, IL.
Her husband of 63 years, George Cameron Townsend, preceded her in death.
Born in Toledo, OH to Vincent and Nellie (Kupiec) Darmofal, she and George made a home in Park Forest, IL for 58 years, where she was active in politics, St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, and community service. Even into their late eighties she and George delivered food weekly through the Meals on Wheels program. Because of their dedication to the community, she and George were recognized by the Village of Park Forest through a Proclamation of Gratitude and induction into the Village Hall of Fame.
After raising her children, she served in the Rich Township Assessor office, Rich Township Republicans, and held many offices and roles with Kiwanis, including Lt Governor. She had more energy than many of her friends and family who were far younger. It was truly said that she never knew a stranger. Genuinely optimistic and welcoming, she moved through this world with cheerfulness, joy, and goodness. Her faith in Jesus Christ was extremely apparent through her deep love of people and her ability to find a common ground of peace. A child of “the depression” who persevered through many hardships, including the loss of her first grandchild, Jared Townsend, she never let bitterness get so much as a toehold in her life. Her love extended to her many pets, both dogs and cats, who all adored her with an uncanny devotion. Those who knew her would agree that she was a woman of many, many words, but all loving, encouraging, amusing, or affirming. In her presence, you felt welcomed and loved.
Moving to Galena in 2018, she easily opened her heart to the wonderful community at Prairie Ridge. Even after losing her husband, she remained genuinely sunny and fully engaged for the rest of her life, making many deep and abiding friendships in the Prairie Ridge community.
She leaves behind her children; Kathleen Townsend, Pamela (Dan) Tindell, Steven (Karen) Townsend, and Jeffrey (Natalie) Townsend, her grandchildren; Kaila (Joey) Long, Emily Mock, Benjamin (Carlie) Townsend, Jacob (Chithra)Townsend, Grace Tindell, Imree Townsend, Judah Townsend, Annalise Townsend, Norah Townsend, and Jubilee Townsend, and great-grandchildren; Elliot, Alice, and Maya Mock, Olivia, Owen, and Oliver Townsend, Clementine Long, Junia and Asha Townsend, her brothers and sister; Stella Gerl, Edward (Rosalie) Darmofal, Robert (Sue) Darmofal, Joseph (Fran) Darmofal, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Ray, Eleanore, and Leo.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Kiwanis Foundation of Galena or St Marys Catholic Church.

As her children were nearing and entering college, she moved back to San Francisco, where she found comfort in volunteering with Meals on Wheels and the University of San Francisco Medical Center Outreach Programs. She eventually settled in Scottsdale, AZ, to spend time with her son, Jeff, and daughter, Laura, and their families. She enjoyed watching her five grandchildren grow into amazing young adults.
Julia highly valued education and provided generously to many individuals to help them pursue their dreams. She also supported education-related organizations that were important to her. For this, we are all very grateful.

Alvy E. Kennedy, Jr
Alvy Ernest Kennedy Jr., 69, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully in Dubuque, Iowa, surrounded by his family. Alvy’s battle with cancer was a testament to his strength and courage throughout his life. He was stubborn as hell and fought as hard as he could until the end.
Alvy was born on July 1, 1954, in Dubuque, Iowa, to his parents Alvy Sr. and Myrtle (Siegert) Kennedy. From an early age, Alvy’s vibrant spirit and warm heart shone brightly, making a lasting impact on all who knew him. He found joy in even the simplest moments and was always there to lend a helping hand and offer support to those in need. He was always the one to call when you needed to borrow a tool, needed a ride, or needed input on anything car related.
Alvy’s devotion to his family was unwavering. On April 22, 1995, he married the love of his life, Denise Herrig. Their union was a celebration of a lifelong friendship that grew into a deep and enduring love. They shared little nicknames like “Pepsi” and “Toyota”. Together, they blended into a beautiful family, filled mostly with love, laughter, and cherished memories. They had more than their fair share of trying times, but always powered through. One of their best family memories was a family vacation to Sandusky Ohio, where he sported short shorts, tube socks, and chocolatey brown hair. (Brown hair, can you even imagine!?)
Alvy leaves behind his wife, Denise, children, Stephanie (Garren Cook) Tuegel, Adam “AJ” Kennedy, Keith (Laci) Kennedy, Melissa (Willie) Harris, Jennifer (Anthony Besch) Kennedy, and former son-in-law, Travis Tuegel. His grandchildren: Bianca, Carter, and Piper Tuegel; Jayden and Dylan Cook; Brody and Lorelai Kennedy; Jayce, Jayden, Jayna, and Jayme Kennedy; and Micah Kennedy. He cherished every moment spent with them. He enjoyed attending their sporting events and he especially loved spending his days with Brody & Lorelai. Their love, care, comfort, quick-witted sass, and joy brought him immense happiness and “kept him young”. The bond they shared was truly irreplaceable. Alvy would agree that being a grandpa was one of the greatest joys of his life.
Alvy is also survived by his sister Gloria Pline, siblings in law: Dawn Rannals, Debbie, Steve, Jon, Dean, Doreen, and Amanda Herrig, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Alvy was preceded in death by his parents, parents in law; Arnie & Thelma Herrig, brother, Richard “Skip” Kennedy, his brothers-in-law, Jude and Dan Herrig, Ronald Pline, nephews, Billy & Jim Pline and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Alvy dedicated many years of service to the City of Dubuque. When he wasn’t working you could find him tinkering in the garage, playing darts with the guys, sitting on the swing in the front yard and chatting with anyone who happened to walk by. He was a social butterfly of sorts!
Alvy had a passion for motorcycles and fast cars. He was so proud of his adventures on the Platteville hill climb and took much pride in his motorcycles. Alvy was a stock car driver for years. He always had a passion for speed, which was evident by the number of tickets on his driving record. He even held a record at the Dubuque Speedway for breaking the wall in turn #1. Most recently, he was a member of the Heartland Novas and looked forward to the Nova Nationals, each year. He loved every opportunity he had to show off his car and get out and cause shenanigans with his friends. He had such tremendous pride in his 65 Chevy II which he passed on to his boys.
Alvy’s infectious laughter and warm smile touched the lives of countless individuals. He had the remarkable ability to bring joy to others, especially during the holiday season. His portrayal of Santa Claus brought happiness to children and adults of all ages and created lasting memories for families throughout the Dubuque community and the City of Donahue, including a write up in the TH calling him the “Santa Recycling Man”.
In the face of adversity, Alvy remained resilient. His determination and perseverance inspired all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unmatched devotion to his family and friends. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. To know him was to love him.
To honor Alvy’s wishes, there will not be a traditional service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and friends to visit and share memories. In lieu of flowers, an Alvy Kennedy Memorial Fund has been established.
Alvy’s family would like to send a special thank you to some very special friends & family by choice: Ronda Davis, Brenda & Richard Elsamiller, Cindy & Roger Hook, Ilene & Dave Loutsch, Randy & Rose Ludowitz, Jim & Marilyn Ploessl, and Bob & Deb Richardson. Your friendship and support throughout the years (especially the past year) has never gone unnoticed. You always brought brightness to Alvy’s days. We love you and will never forget your generosity and care. We would also like to send a thank you to Drs. Whalen, Keppler, and Engleman, Dr. Runde’s nurse Julie, and the Hospice of Dubuque.
We couldn’t have hand picked a better man to be our Dad and Grandpa. Brad Paisley said it best, “Looking back, all I can say about all the things he did for me is, I hope I’m at least half the dad that he didn’t have to be.”
Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.

Mark was born March 23, 1957, to Charles and Anna Mae Edmonds. He grew up south of Galena on Rocky Hill Rd. with his 9 siblings. You could catch him circling live music listings in the paper each week while always having his harmonicas in his truck just in case.

Aside from music, he was an enthusiastic gardener and could be known to leave vegetables or canned goods at your place once he left. Gerald A. Riniker
Gerald A. “Jerry” Riniker, age 83, of Durango, IA, completed his earthly journey on March 31, 2024, at home while surrounded by his loving family. Per Jerry’s wish, there will be no public service. However, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Jerry’s family.
Jerry was born on November 23, 1940, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Mathew V. and Marie R. Riniker. He was truly blessed to spend his entire 83 years of this life on the family farm which he considered to be home on every level. Jerry was a proud graduate of the Loras Academy where he completed his ROTC training and went on to honorably serve his country with the U.S. Navy. He met the love of his life, Judith A. Walsh at the Melody Mill and they were united in marriage on August 25, 1962. They were blessed with three children of their own raising the next generation on the family farm. There were countless wonderful memories that we have from dad as he worked so hard instilling in all of us an incredible work ethic always reminding us, “an idle mind is a devil’s workshop”. Even spending winters in Aho, AZ, for over twenty years in retirement; Jerry’s heart never left the farm as he spent over a decade working for Flynn Ready Mix and the Dubuque Community School District as a bus driver.
Jerry always had a smile on his face and made countless friends throughout his life. A little socializing with family and friends with a cold cocktail in hand were always a welcome addition to any day. Throw a little Willie Nelson in the background and Jerry would say life was good and how could it possibly get any better. He was naturally gifted; Jack of all trades you might say, he believed we should do it ourselves as “home is where we hang our hats.” Never backing down from a good challenge and a chance to show off his skills including a little woodworking, crafting bird houses, nativity scenes, and cabinets.
It is a lesser world today without Jerry’s physical presence. Thankfully, the love and lessons he leaves behind, along with his spirit of excellence will be clearly visible in the lives of all who knew and loved him. Thank you, Jerry, for living a complete and honorable life as a true reminder to all who found their way into your world that life does not intrinsically require complications, but rather only a simple acknowledgment of the things which truly matter. We will miss you more than words could ever depict and now wait patiently to be reunited with your joyful spirit once again.
Surviving family members: his loving wife of 61 years, Judith A. Riniker, Durango, Iowa; his three children, Tammy (Keith) Kloser, Durango, Iowa, Geraldine “Geri” (Michael Johnson) Schilling- Johnson, Dubuque, Iowa, and Patrick “Pat” (Sarah) Riniker, Napa, Idaho; his fifteen grandchildren, Amanda (Matt) Kloser, Audrey (Josh) Rawson, Adam (Hannah) Kloser, Sydnie (special friend Seth) Schilling, Spencer Schilling, Kenny (fiancé Brittany) Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Addison Johnson, Samantha (Eugene) Butler, Chris (Kabrina) Riniker, Jack (Heather) Riniker, Matt Riniker, Hannah (Jacob) Kosmann, Isaac Riniker, and Evie Riniker; his nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Rose Marie (Mervin) Theill, Dubuque, IA; along with numerous extended families, friends, and neighbors.

Bruce was born on May 23, 1953, a son to Robert and Ann (Bernhard) Howes. He was a good and decent man who spent his years among us in unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and faith life. Bruce was united in marriage to his soul-mate, Laura M. Schadle, in 1995, and the couple was blessed with many wonderful years together and blessed with an abundance of memories which will thankfully last until we meet him again. He spent his working years providing for his family with Arby’s and finally retired from his position of General Manager in 2012. He always took great pride in his work as well as the friends he made along the way.
Bruce was a faithful servant to the Lord in his free-time. He spent countless hours serving and assisting in many different capacities at Cathedral as well as with the ministry at St. Vincent de Paul. He was also blessed to make two separate mission trips to El Salvador where he was able to bring his love and devotion directly into the lives of those less fortunate. Bruce made a conscious effort to make the world a better place wherever the opportunities arose. His commitment to his fellow man was continually on display and anyone who made their way into Bruce’s inner circle knew without a doubt the upright condition of his heart and mind on any given day. We are going to miss Bruce and his unended devotion to others moving forward, but we are also grateful for the ability to retain the excellent example and legacy he leaves behind for us to follow. Ronald K. Blackburn
Ronald K. “Ron” Blackburn, age 64, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on April 2, 2024, at home while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Ron’s life, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Ron’s family.
Ron was born on August 27, 1959, in Rockford, IL, one of nine children to Raymond H. and Marilyn A. (Turner) Blackburn. He was raised to possess a strong work ethic, but also understood the value of free-time and the proper use of it in order to have a fulfilling and successful life. Ron was a union carpenter by trade and spent countless hours on many projects in the area. He always took great pride in his achievements and found true joy every time he ventured around town and reflected on the tangible display of his time and talents that so many others were able to use and enjoy.
Ron also knew quite well that when the workday was done, life still had time remaining to be savored. He was an outdoorsman at heart and any opportunity to get a fishing pole in his hands, or even to simply relax while cooking out, or sit around the campfire with family and friends while watching and listening to the birds surrounding him was always considered time well spent. He also never missed the chance to join in his favorite pool and bowling leagues when invited. His skills were undeniable, but many would say it was ultimately the socializing which Ron truly cherished. He was also no stranger to a friendly game of cards on the table, and if the company was so inclined, a few hours challenging anyone willing to test his abilities on the board game of choice was always an option. All in all, Ron was up for anything where he could fellowship with those he loved and cared for. Ron was an intrinsically strong-willed character who never surrendered and always gave his best in any and all situations, and his last battle with cancer till the very end was no exception. We are going to miss his larger-than-life personality, his drive and determination, and will never forget all of the lessons he leaves behind now. Thank you, Ron, for continually leading by example, always being true to yourself, and for never leaving anyone in doubt of where you stood. May the Lord grant you peace this day and may our heart find comfort in time as we wait patiently to see you again.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Ron’s include: his three children, Danny (Patricia) Blackburn, La Moille, IL, Tony Grotti, IL, and Carissa (C.J. Miller) Blackburn, Dubuque, IA; his seven grandchildren, Seth, Lillian, Leland, Bri, Andrew, Matteo, and Adelynn; his great-grandson, Conrad; his siblings; along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents.
Ron’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque for all of their professional and compassionate care of Ron and his family.
