Delores I. Merritt

A cherished presence in our lives, Delores departed peacefully on December 23, 2023. Born on September 10, 1936, to David and Myrtle (Scholz) Pierce, she touched the hearts of those around her with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love.

She was united in marriage with Thomas David Merritt on January 28, 1956, in Dubuque, IA. Thomas passed away on July 1, 2001, leaving behind a legacy of love.

A beacon of strength, Delores faced life’s challenges with grace and resilience. Her nurturing spirit created a haven for family and friends, where love and laughter flourished. Whether in moments of joy or times of need, Delores’s steadfast support was a source of comfort for all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Delores embraced life with a passion, finding joy in the simple pleasures and creating lasting memories with her loved ones. Known for her competitive spirit, she brought lively energy to every aspect of her life.

She was a dedicated teacher, devoting 33 years to educating young minds in the Dubuque Community School District at Eisenhower Elementary.

Delores is survived by her sons, Jeff of Spring Lake Park, MN; Dan (Wendy) of Dubuque, IA; Mark (currently companioned by Valeria Rad, and ex-wife, Zoe) of Meridian, ID; Greg’s significant other, Shirline Granzow, and Greg’s ex-wife, Becky. She is also survived by her sister, Susan Herron of Dubuque, IA.

Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren: Joe (Kayleigh Tuckner), Kiley (TJ) Lentsch, Morgan, Brandon (Victoria), Brock, Troy (Courtney), Ben (Nikki), Tim (Alyssa); and great-grandchildren: Brady, Mya, Leo, Layla, Malaya, Ainsley, Scout, Dodge, Hudson, Tinley, and Maddie Jo.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents, her son Greg, brother-in-law Jim Herron, and daughter-in-law Sherry Merritt.

Delores’s cherished fur baby (dog), Maggie, a loyal and loving companion, brought joy and comfort to her life, adding warmth and laughter to her days through their special bond.

Visitation will be held on December 29th from 11 am until 1 pm, followed by a service at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory located at 2659 John F. Kennedy Road, Dubuque, IA 52002.

In gratitude, the family acknowledges the “special angels” at Eagle Point Place and Hospice of Dubuque. A Delores I. Merritt Memorial Fund has been established to honor her memory.

May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may the memories of her enduring love bring solace to those who mourn her passing.
