Donald D. Slattery Sr.

Donald D. Slattery Sr. 78, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on April 11, 2026.

A joint visitation for Don and his wife Linda Slattery who passed away April 4, 2025, will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. followed by Military Honors accorded by the American Legion Post #6. Burial will take place in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, Iowa at a later date.

Don was born on August 11, 1947, in Zwingle, Iowa, the son of Wilson and Doris (Sweeney) Slattery. His family moved to Dubuque when he was a young boy, where he would go on to spend the rest of his life. Don was a proud veteran, he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a member of the 1st Cavalry Division. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and dedicated 35 years of hard work to John Deere before his retirement.

He was an active member of the disabled veteran community; Don was deeply committed to his fellow service members. He spent much of his free time volunteering at The Veterans Freedom Center, where he found great purpose and camaraderie.

Don was a man of many passions. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved skiing, hunting, and fishing. Whether he was at the billiards table, watching the local dirt track races, or spending time with his family, Don lived with a steadfast determination and a quiet strength that guided him through every season of his life.

He is survived by his children: Laura (Steven Caisse) Payne, Donald (Gerlie) Slattery Jr, Andrew (Consolata) Slattery, Daniel (Julie) Slattery, and daughter-in-law Michelle Deutmeyer; nine beloved grandchildren: Dylan, Kayla, Rhea, Alyssa, Travis, Cole, Cade, Samantha and Ellen; and three great-grandchildren, Evelynn, Eleanor and Rory; siblings: Frank (Jane), Dorene and Dee.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Slattery; two sons, Scott and Timothy; his parents, Wilson and Doris; siblings and siblings-in-law, Richard (Nancy), Diane, and Vincent; along with his grandson, Kevin.
