Douglas M. Oberfoell

Douglas Martin Oberfoell, 73, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at home on October 26th.

Doug did not want funeral services. Instead, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Doug was born on September 24, 1951 in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Albert M. “Pinky” and Irene (Callahan) Oberfoell. He grew up in Epworth, IA where he graduated class of 1969 from Western Dubuque High School. He retired from John Deere in 2002 after 30 years of service as a welder. Doug was an avid outdoorsmen who enjoyed hunting, fishing and morel picking. He enjoyed watching football and old westerns because they reminded him of his youth and simpler times. He loved the outdoors and spent countless summers creating memories with family and friends in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. He was known for inviting everyone to enjoy some of his famous deep fried turkey. Doug would also volunteer to babysit any family member’s dogs, eagerly waiting to tell you about their adventures together. He had many close friends, enjoyed going out to restaurants, classic cars and playing euchre.

Doug was always eager to share his experiences from his favorite restaurants with anyone willing to listen. He never met a stranger and was quick to bring laughter while telling funny stories. He also enjoyed growing and sharing tomatoes from his garden, often showing up with a bag of sweet cherry tomatoes. He always knew what everyone liked and would make sure to pick up a little extra honey, cinnamon rolls, or Tom and Jerry mix to share with you. He made you feel seen and heard, and paid attention to the little things. He was always lending a hand to those in need and was closely involved in all his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He was an amazing father, friend, and husband.

Doug has joined his parents, Albert M. “Pinky” and Irene Oberfoell, sister Pamela, brother Jeff, grandson Mason, and friends in heaven. Doug is survived by his wife of 47 years Diann Oberfoell; his son Adam Oberfoell (Bridget Travnick Oberfoell) and his granddaughter Aspen “Mars” Oberfoell of Madison, WI. His daughter Brandy Oberfoell of Dubuque, IA. His son Bobby Oberfoell (Alicia Oberfoell), and grandsons: Aiden, Trenton and Ryan Oberfoell of Dubuque, IA. He is also survived by sisters: Rhonda (Jim) Wernimont of Dubuque, IA, Lorna (Frank) Domitrovich of Epworth, IA, and Shelley Oberfoell of Atlanta, GA, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends as well.

Doug’s legacy will live on in those who loved him. Doug lived larger than life and created a lifetime of memories and feelings for us to carry on. He will always be close by anytime his family or friends visit the woods or cast a line. We hope you enjoy fishing and hunting in the heavenly woods, Papa. See you on the lake someday. We love you always.
