On December 21, 1951, she married the love of her life James “Donald” Mays. They shared more than 72 years of love and adventure until his passing nine months ago. Together they built a life full of cherished memories.
After marrying and moving to Dubuque, Phyllis was employed by Mercy Hospital and worked for the Dubuque Community School District. Later in life Phyllis and her husband owned and operated the Mays Grill Shop from the early 1980’s until they closed up shop in early 2000’s. Not quite ready to retire they both took a job at the Dubuque Greyhound Park where they thoroughly enjoyed working and met so many wonderful friends.
Phyllis was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who took immense pride in bringing her family together. She loved hosting gatherings, preparing favorite dishes, and creating traditions that will be cherished for generations. She loved flowers and had many beautiful displays throughout her yard. Phyllis also had a deep bond with animals, especially her beloved dogs who were always a constant source of companionship and joy.
Phyllis was a proud 50 year member of the Dubuque Moose Lodge 355, where she found fulfillment in helping organize fundraisers to benefit children in need. Her dedication to service and her generous spirit have a lasting impact on those around her.
