Richard A. “Dick” Helmer, 89, of Dubuque, died Friday, August 14, 2026, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until 10:15 am on Monday, October 12, 2026 at Church of the Resurrection.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Dick will be at 10:30 am on Monday, October 12, 2026, at Church of the Resurrection. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.

Richard was born July 13, 1937, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Hillis “Doc” and Florence (Schueller) Helmer. On May 28, 1960, he married Rosemary M. Stuempel at First Presbyterian Church in Davenport, IA. She preceded him in death on October 3, 2008. He later married Pamela Siegworth on August 10, 2013.

Dick graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1955 and from St. Ambrose College, Davenport, IA, in 1963.

He worked for the US government as an accountability officer.

Dick enjoyed a life filled with adventure, music, and time spent doing the things he loved. He enjoyed fishing and traveling, especially taking cruises that allowed him to see more of the world. His work took him to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Dick loved listening to music, he enjoyed his biweekly poker game with his friends at the Moose Lodge and cherished time spent with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Helmer of Dubuque; one daughter, Lori (Ron) Johnson of Olathe, KS; four grandchildren, Zach, Alex, Lauren, and Jake; one great-grandchild, Cayden; three nephews, Ted (Debi) Muntz, Tim (Cindy) Muntz, and Tom (Sarah) Muntz; two nieces Chris (Dave) O’Brien and Cherie (Bob) Laufenberg; several great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Rosemary Helmer; son, Jeffrey Allen Helmer; sister, Joan Helmer; and step-brother, Harold (Delores) Muntz, and niece, Michelle Tedrow.

Memorials may be given in Dick’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
